Hey i was just wondering if the new 4.2.2 touchwiz will be ported to the s3 from the s4? Because i know im not the only one hoping for the new touchwiz to come to the s3.
I would think it's the same as porting the s3 international firmware to the us variant. Different hardware, different set up. It'll probably brick your phone.

Oh wow really? So its not the same as like Sense on the HTCs when they were really only htcs getting newer sense roms?
Its not just the launcher its boot loaders, framework, kernels, and its all built for an 8 core exynos processer and we have a dual core Qualcomm

It'll never happen unless Samsung releases Touchwiz source code to work with. If they would to release it I would be very possible for that to happen, even have TW on non Samsung devices..
HTC Sense is just a skin to be honest (with the exception of the new Blink feed on HTC ONE) with a couple of fancy widgets that rely on that skin.
Sense was partially ported to a couple devices back in the day due to the fact that it is almost just a skin. (Any one can feel free to correct me on this one )
Galaxy S4's Touchwiz, not only is it a skin but the gestures and fancy thing the S4 has rely heavily on TW framework.
With out that TW source to be released we're out of luck

I sure hope att/sammy didn't build all that for the exynos octa. Would brick there qualcom quad cpu phones.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
Only a small portion of the S4s are gonna be running the exynos processor. Many will have the next iteration of Qualcomm's snapdragon. It will still be nearly if not entirely impossible to get the S4's firmware running on the S3. We already have 4.2.2 on the S3 though. Just gotta get on a custom ROM.

He asked if it will be ported... so it would not brick your phone if you tried, it just simply wouldnt work. Unless you try to flash unmodified s4 software on your s3

Custom TW Rom are built using the original TW firmware, with features added to them.
IF we had TW source code, we'd have the features and apps like TW camera on AOSP based roms....

I'd guess that any pure AOSP based ROM would need to somehow support the Samsung S-pen capabilities and be made to co-exist with the Samsung system S-pen capabilities software "blob", or do away with the S-pen capabilities altogether?
AOSP is open source ... enhancements to it may or may not be. If it helps Samsung in their patent fight with Apple to prove how they've added their own differentiated technology to smart phones, should they make it open source and let Apple have it as well?

There are loads of ROMs to choose from Taylorcox75.
Samsung Galaxy Note 2 ROMs.
(They all lead back to here at XDA and you will need to read the forum threads carefully. Hopefully the thread screenshots might give you an idea of what you're looking for.)
Should I come back and find this post still in the dev section tomorrow, this space will be filled with Russian Nyan Cat.
You have been warned.
I have the S3, and S4's 441 ppi Screen is tempting me, but won't our GS3, have those features through a ROM? So should I upgrade or not?
Probably not. Unless you want Touchwiz running on the latest and greatest android build the GS4 is probably not the best way to go if you already have a GS3. Not to mention all those new features will be gone the minute you flash an aosp ROM. So YES if you want Toichwiz on the latest android version (4.2.2) but NO if you're an aosp guy or if you can handle waiting for the new features to be released on the GS3.

hmm feel like not worth to upgrade it
too few improvement
S4 is too much like the note 2.
Only plus for me is the quad core.
Transmitted from my SGH-T999.
I'll be upgrading to an S4, without replacing my existing S3 phone.
Outside the 1080P display, the TV remote and some biometric sensors, I'll have the same phone!
Samsung has already been quoted as releasing the software apps that do not require specific S4 hardware for the S3 and Note II. Look for it later this year.
Well if you're getting it for development don't count on many also Roms as cm team have already mentioned that they are not supporting the gs4. :/

Hey everyone. I am just getting into development and am looking for some experience in the field. I know it is not easy, but, if someone is not already working on this, would anyone like to join me in an attempt to port a touchwiz android 4.2.1 ROM from the international GS3 to all carrier variant GS3s? If so, respond here, or PM me. I am really interested in getting the ball rolling on this as the new touchwiz features intrigue me, but as a high school student I have no money for a galaxy s4.
Thanks for your interest.

I don't even think its possible to port from international..
I mean in general is it, but its completely rewriting everything from scratch since US and International is completely different hardware... That's why no one has done it.
Anyone feel free to correct me but OP, if you want to really accomplish this, you have a LONG way to work. Its easier to cook your own TW ROM

I was just wondering, because it has all of the new touchwiz functionality from the galaxy s4 (minus some of the hardware dependent stuff) so it just seemed like a cool idea. Maybe I can just get the cam, gallery, and some other stuff to work with our current touchwiz/android version.

That's if they even release TW source code... Which they probably wont since its closed sourse... The only hope is waiting for the US variant, but even with the US variant, its still closed. This is something extreme lol most elite devs won't even mess with TW since no code makes it extremely difficult... But we'll have to wait and see.

Yeah, It is rather annoying. But is TW being closed source a new thing? Because if I remember correctly, some, if not all, of the Galaxy S3 TW versions were available open source.

The only source Samsung releases consist of kernel source code and various stock stuff. None of the stuff they release is for TW...
Touchwiz is and always has been closed source. If code was released for TW those featured would of already been implemented to AOSP based roms.

Does anybody think we will ever see a Galaxy S 4 ROM port? Based off the T-Mobile Galaxy S 4? Just wondering.

I seriously doubt it, so far the devs could not even port a S3 i9300 rom for our phones.
But I am sure the devs are working real hard on porting all the S4's new apps which
are missing from the S3 as well as the S4 camera.
There already are a few apps which came from the S4 which seem to work fine in our S3.
I would really like to see the S4 ported, but I would only use it if it had Wifi Calling.
The main reason why I am not using any ported roms is due to the lack of wifi calling plus all the other bugs ported roms seem to have.
I think there will be s4 ports for the S3, will they be perfect? Maybe in time.
I might try it out for a little while, but most likely stick with aospa. I couldn't stand not having PA hybrid settings as well as theme chooser.

I just hope that the Lime Pie 5.0 is nothing like the current lmt pie.
The current pie should have come in two flavors, one for the DEVS and the other for average users. LOL
Here's the thing... The international S3 had completely different hardware. Qualcomm has been historically easier to port over because they use common code.
So I fully believe that in the next month or two, we will see S4 ports. On the other side though, quad core versus dual core. You're not going to have an S4

I doubt it will be any time soon. Multiwindow hasn't even been added besides the Synergy Rom.
And now that the S4 is out the devs will be focusing more on that because from what I've seen most devs from here got a S4.

And two other roms and there's almost a flashable zip ready. It's all possible, it's possible to have sense working on our phone too, but a lot work. It depends on how many awesome devs stick around, and if they're willing to take the time.
I'm not sure what's the big deal though. Most of the same gimmicky type features from the s3 are available in the from the play store, I'm guessing some from s4 will be too.
T-Mobile SGS III
I think that it is likely we will eventually get some ports of features from the Galaxy S4. Samsung also said that they would be bringing the new features of the S4 to the S3 and other "flagship" devices in the future, so it will just be a matter of time.
But personally, I do not care because I do not care for TouchWiz. CyanogenMod trumps anything Samsung could have made.

well S6 or s6 edge is using 64 bit chip + their CPU was made by the Samsung, and there is very limited resource. I remember there is a guy attempt to make a CM room but he stop.
I did not know. Figure it wouldn't be any different since they are all just built off of the actual android releases by Google

It has a lot to do with the chipset in the device. Most Qualcomm devices get AOSP roms pretty quick because Qualcomm releases their source codes, but this is an Exynos device, and Samsung is bad at releasing source codes unfortunately. I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.
Glad my other Exynos device has no issue. I'd die if that beautiful work of art had to stick to TW
