Rumour: Android 4.2 coming November with LG Optimus G Nexus
4th Oct 2012 | 07:38
Rumours abound of a new Nexus smartie from LG, plus updated Jelly Bean
Google will announce Android 4.2 next month at an event with LG, where the latter will unveil the LG Optimus G Nexus, according to rumours.
It'll also mark a change in how the Nexus brand is positioned. At the moment it's for Google's flagship devices, like the Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus. But - if the rumour is correct -Google will let any manufacturer release devices as part of the Nexus program. All they'll have to do is stick to strict standards laid down by Google.
We have to stress these are all just rumours at the moment, but they make interesting reading.
The tip came from "a regular source who has provided accurate information in the past" but wishes to remain anonymous, according to Android and Me.
In order to qualify as part of the Nexus family, companies will have to make devices that use stock Android and 64MB of secure memory for faster media streaming. Though they can add custom UI skins as part of a new "customisation centre" Google will introduce.
Then there are more hardware requirements to make sure devices support Android 5.0, which is due next autumn.
The LG Optimus G Nexus
LG has been rumoured to be working on a Nexus smartphone for a while now. The name is said to be LG Optimus G Nexus, which seems a bit of a mouthful.
It could follow up the quad-core LG Optimus G,which was announced last month.
Earlier this week,we heard about a potential new flagship device coming from Google this month. Though as this story supports, it's likely to be running Android 4.2 (a new version of Jelly Bean) rather than Android Key Lime Pie.

Seriously if LG is going to make the next nexus phone for Google... not sure if it will be a good or bad thing. Irregardless of whether update and patches is going to improve because of google, I might not even want to risk... Might just go to Samsung or HTC if google is having lg make their next nexus phone.
LG does make good hardware, as long as they don't pair with Nvidia for tegra (actually, maybe, cause the nexus 7 has tegra 3)
It's LG and its software that is screwed up, but if they make the nexus phone, google would make the software perfect. Fastest updates cause it's a nexus.
rumors also suggest that there will be multiple nexus devices AND that the nexus program itself will be revised to a "meet the requirements and join the nexus" sort of thing. This rings quite a few alarms in my head, since it apparently still gives manufacturers some room in terms of OS skinning. I hope Google stays faithful to the nexus devices in terms of upgrades, otherwise this will be just another slew of devices where you have to wait an eternity to get updates.

Hardware has never been LG's weakness and anyone who has used the 4X HD knows not only does it have excellent build quality, but LG's UI has come such a long way to the point that in many ways feels like stock ICS give or take a few tweaks. LG is also already using the Nvidia Tehran 3 chip (quad core) in the same 4X HD. Its a beast. I can only imagine what the G or Nexus would be like if they made it .I'd be all in.
The androidandme article on this is saying that there will be a customization centre and in short they can skin android as they please but the user can switch back to vanilla if they want. Sounds all well and good but with the option of skinning I worry they still have to make the skins work even if you opt out of using it.
Will wait and see in the change in nexus programme though, under the current one the lg nexus would be a force to be reckoned with but it looks like the updating that makes the nexus series what it is might be handed back to manufacturers.

Dont know man. Maybe its too early to say, but if the skinning thing required lg's action, then I am out... no way, bye bye... but if lg just need to to provide the hardware and the updates and patches will depend solely on google, then like what you guys say, lg make fantastic hardware, might not be a bad thing...
It should be, one nexus phone for LG, samsung, htc motorolla. SO we can choose screen size, design etc. Optimus G looks good. But not with LG logo.

If the moderator feels I was wrong to create this thread, then feel free to delete it but I just felt it is somehow related because having all the ****ty experience we had with this ****ty 2x phone, if lg was granted permission to create a nexus phone, it will be a real hard decision to make...
But if like what some guys here mentioned, 1 samsung nexus, 1 lg nexus and 1 htc nexus or etc... it will be real interesting... it might become like a battle to see which brand is more popular...

if that was to happen i think lg would win out in that regards since they will be all level in software but hardware/ design is where lg usually shines in
Nexus smartphones this year and the manufacturers working on next Nexus smartphones are HTC, Sony, LG and Samsung, reported Digitimes citing industry sources.
Digitimes might not be the most trusted source around, but tech blog Android and Me too had recently posted a similar report corroborating the launch of multiple Nexus phones.
According to Android and Me, Google is changing the way Nexus partners are chosen, and from now on any Android manufacturer will be able to partner Google for making Nexus smartphones, given it adheres to certain conditions.
These conditions include the obvious "use of stock Android", 64MB of secure memory for media streaming, and future-proof hardware to support next Android version, claims the blog.
There is also a surprise in the form of customisation center, which will allow manufacturers to include to their own software customisations in Nexus devices, which was not possible until now. However users will have no obligation to use them.
Google reportedly will allow branded vendors to set hardware specifications as well as looks of the forthcoming Nexus smartphones as long as the models are based on its latest native Android system, claimed Digitimes.
Next Nexus makers A previous report from WSJ and now Digitimes, both hint that HTC, LG, Sony and Samsung are working on the next crop of Nexus devices. We have however only heard about LG and HTC devices in the leaks till now. Samsung and Sony's alleged Nexus smartphones are more or less absent from the rumours and leaks till now.
Android and Me, which has got the information from credible sources, states that LG's Optimus G Nexus is going to be one of the next Nexus smartphones and it will come with 1,5GHz quad-core processor, 8MP camera, and will look different than the current LG Optimus G.
On the other hand, HTC's rumoured Nexus 5 packs a 1080p 5-inch display, 1.5GHz quad-core processor 64GB internal storage and 2GB of RAM.
When The latest rumours suggest the new Nexus smartphones are going to be launched sometime in early November, however we will see the next Android version 4.2 at AllThingsD's Dive into Mobile conference in October-end, where Android boss Andy Rubin is scheduled to speak.
@galaxyfitankit there was some leaks for the Samsung but it was less impressive. There was some photos online that were tagged as coming from a phone with a model number that is sequentially one up from the current nexus. There was also a spec sheet, I can't remember the exact details but if I rember rightly it was more like a galaxy nexus+ with a slight boost in specs but still dual core 1gb of ram ect

ya, i remember too that rumors says samsung nexus is just a minor improvement over the current nexus... so ya, looking at the rumors, htc and lg nexus sounds impressive.

There certainly seems to be a lot of evidence pointing towards them 2 being the big nexus devices and maybe Samsung trying to hit the mid range market with theirs. The HTC and lg do sound very impressive

Finally, a Nexus phone that's up-to-par with current devices! Every other Nexus after the Nexus One was just like any other Android device available at the time. I just hope that all carriers get to see this Nexus.
Hi there
I have this options
400 eur - Optimus G ( E975 )
450 eur - SGS3 LTE
550 eur - SGS4
I have now SGS i9000 and am very tempted by Optimus G, even though it has non-removable battery and no sd card slot.
Can i be optimistic that in future l'll be able to install roms with good support and stability like now for i9000, because for sure the S3 and S4 will and have massive comunity support. I know that CM is already nightly :good:
The good sign is that hardware wise its similar to Nexus 4, very similar :good:
Some people also have problems with battery life and drain with Optimus.
Please, can someone shine some light.
If money is not an issue,i would go for the s4,which is superior.but the s4 is from a different league and you can't compare it with g and s3.between s3 lte and g,g all the way.
Your choice.
Optimus g has about same support as the i9305.compare the threads and see for yourself.
Anyway, the decission is yours,we csn't make choose something with your money.
My personal top:
1.s4
2.g
3.s3 lte

I think, It's very good choice. In June I am also buting this phone. S4 is nice, but I don't like Samsung's products and the cheap plastic feeling. Also OG has IPS screen which is IMO better than Amoled. And It doesn't have FullHD resolution so it's more battery friendly. LG looks beautiful and has awesome community. :victory:

I advice you to wait till June-July. About that time E985 will come to Deutchland and Poland I assume. It's Optimus G Pro discussed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2273275 It got waaaay better shiny IPS than OG E975, Audience earSmart eS325, all the 13th year bells and wistles, android 4.2, E975 is outdated compared to E985
well, you forget one tiiiiiiny litle thing,,,,the 5.5" display?that's phablet class.besides, the g pro will not receive 4.2 untill july. it will be launched with 4.1.2.I tested a 4.2 version and my sources told me it's only testing phase.not to mention tomorrow we'll have 4.3.x launched. you do realise it's more likely to pass 4.2 and jump straight to 4.3.

Yeah, I know. I know, that theoretically Pro is better choice, but I love the look of OG. Also, I don't need FHD display, and HD with Snapdragon S4 Pro is satysfying combination. Pro is way too big for me, If I want phablet I would choose Note 2, or SGS4. OG seems like a perfect phone for me, I don't need many ****ty extras, I just want fast and nice looking phone. If only there was MicroSD slot...that's one point for OG Pro.
I suppose, that OG will be updated in the same time that Pro, If not earlier, because it's similiar to Nexus 4 so development should be faster for it.
BTW. Anyone tested if USB OTG works on OG? It's very important for me. Thanks.

LG Optimus G Pro E985 has 5.5 inch diagonal, that's to big for the phone, when is this screen size race gonna stop
btw: Using OG E975 for one day now and I love it , the only thing that still confuzes me is that the back and menu button are reversed compared to my old samy i9000, but ill get used to that soon , other than that its #1 :good:

I think in this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwXtly6ZMYs#t=695s this they say something like "in yuli" probably that means in July but you better ask some German-speaking comrade to translate. Its the only info I've found by now
Which do you think is better for performance, gaming, general usage/smoothness?
Also, quick other question, the Lg Optimus G, which version of android is the latest official update? 4.1? 4.2? 4.3?
I can get either one, both for the same price (16 gb moto g vs e975 optimus g)
Moto g got weaker gpu. Will always be on newer android officially. Screen better on Optimus G, moto G screen got slight bad viewing angles
Sent from my LG-E975 using Tapatalk
LG OptimusG: slightly better camera, 2gb Ram, good build-quality, LTE. Lots of more or less usefull software addtions but uggly and based off android 4.1. E975 has never gotten an android update and most probably never will although it has a similar hardware to nexus 4. 32gb of storage.
Moto G: Android 4.3 and the guaranty to get 4.4 early next year. SoC is very battery efficient, camera is worse than on e975. gaming will be in most cases similar to optimus g but if you want to multitask 2gb of rams would have been better.
i'd prefer optimus g if you don't mind that lg gives a **** on software support. otherwise i'd choose the moto g, it's a good phone too, but lacks of storage and ram.
You mention lack of android updates from LG on the optimus G, I was just reading about that updated officially to 4.1 only, but custom roms seem to get 4.3 and I think even 4.4, that true? Thanks for the responses.
Upgrading from my galaxy nexus, so either will be an upgrade really

e975 was released with android 4.1 in europe, so it technically never got an update.
i came from galaxy nexus to optimus g too, and it was a huge upgrade. especially the screen and the 2gigs of RAM where really great. yes there are even 4.4 rom's and they are pretty good. our devs do a really good job but don't expect a rom-selection as big as on galaxy nexus.
The xda community is great for support. I do not pretend to expect a rom community as big as the galaxy nexus, I thought I was going to change roms and test alot out on my galaxy nexus, ended up sticking to paranoid android, cyanogenmod, and such. So long as there is a stable (daily driver capable) version of android 4.3 or 4.4 for this phone, I would be happy.
Can't compare moto G with OG. MG has other market target. It's aiming at chinese phones..in the 200-300 price range. it will never compete with high end android devices.i wouldn't buy a chinese quad core from a no name chinese brand if i'd had to choose between moto g and one of those. but between og and mg...og all the way.
BTW...this is my last post here as a LG OPTIMUS G OWNER...i just sold mine for 320 euros..tomorrow i'll get a S4 for about 3 weeks, then i'll buy the G2. It was a great time spent here. Enjoy your phones guys. i'll enter from time to time,to see what happens here and to bash those who deserve it

@kimitza, good luck with your new toy (just in time for Christmas, I guess )! Thank you very much for all the support you've been providing to OG community! For me, as a recent new OG user, your posts were the first source of some valuable info. Your help is most greatly appreciated! :good:
thanks,but i won't be gone for good...i'll still help if i can.
I have both phones, and have to say I'm very impressed with the Moto G, mainly in terms of battery power and vibrant screen. Colours pop a little better than the optimus G which is a bit dull in comparison. Gaming performance is similar, but the optimus G is slightly faster. Obviously Moto G is easier to handle in one hand, and sound is more rounded on the Moto G (Optimus has more treble). Optimus G is still my main phone, however Moto G is an outstanding backup phone and recommended IMO.
Motorola G is the best phone on price/quality. It costs half price than optimus g, in my country, and it offers the same on hardware, with some differences.
I'm a Galaxy user considering the G3. How good is LG at supporting their phones with firmware and upgrades?
Thanks

I got 4.4.2 on my G2 before my wife got it on her HTC One M7.
Not good at all. Updates ones a year maybe
Better than they once were, but carriers like Verizon often slow it down anyways. Updates honestly aren't that big of a deal now though - not like in the beginning when a lot of apps weren't separated from the OS. I can't say the Kitkat update on my Note 2 really was a gotta have thing - the most noticeable difference is that I can no longer hide apps which imo is a bad thing.
You get fast update if you buy Korean version of G3.(F400S/K/L)
This is true experience from me.
I'd say LG and Sony are behind the rest in terms of updates.

Just got my T-Mobile LG G3 D-850. I havent been lately active in Any forum since early 2k15. Because when i sold out my Razr M, and got LG Optimus G i was not much intrested in modding it because of its nature, then got Samsung Galaxy S4, same story i wasnt much interested in that kinda stuff just rooted that thing! now got Tmobile G3 and I am eagerly waiting for Marshmallow to Roll out!
what would you say my purchase of LG G3 is correct decision or it was better if i would have got HTC M8 or Galaxy S5?
Welcome. Its a matter of opinion in a way, but the G3 has its perks over both phones. If you want marshmallow now, you can try out Fulmics. I run CM13 at the moment, but I wouldn't recommend it ATM if you really are for stability.

just to clarify it's the d851. Ive had my G3 since it's release. I have a hard time letting go of this phone. You can do so much with it and customization on this phone is endless. Look into G3 tweaksbox ??the only thing that sucks is the battery life. I have the LG charging cradle and extra battery so for me this phone is perfect.

In 18 days of use i rooted the device and recently manually updating to Marshmallow i have only 2 major complaints, the biggest complaint is battery life, it sucks really really sucks, just have to charge twice atleast if you are constantly on 3G/4G, and second complaint is overheating, this also specially on 3G/4G. Otherwise asfar i know this is one of the best devices i have ever had!
