How to enable them, anyone know?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2 Beta-5
I have been trying to do this as well. I have tried to follow several guides but it always errors when trying to recompile framework-res.apk
this is one of the guides I have tried
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1364757
the phone I am trying to use has a broken connection inside for the capacitive buttons and its not yet available to replace, so ics soft keys are my only hope
Ah man that sucks sir. Yeah the compiling part is what is stopping me. Its not as easy as it sounds.

Yes, that is exactly why. I just don't understand where it's going wrong...all the guides make it look so easy. Even when I make no changes, I cant decompile and recompile without errors. Not sure want the problem is since this is really the first time I have tried such a thing.

Maybe you could ask a dev to make a flash zip
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
U could try the softkey app from the play store. It would take less space. It works on rooted devices only. I've tried it GB and it works fine. Don't know about ics but it's worth a shot.

Any way to completely disable them? Running AOKP and would like a Nexus-like experience. I know we can disable the lights, I don't want them to work at all.
Get a button remaper app and remap it to focus for all 4 keys.

Get a root explorer. and either mod/delete System > Usr > Keylayout > melfas_touchkey.kl
I would delete it. Then they shouldnt work at all.
EDIT: you are going to have to delete more than just that one. I believe you are going to have to edit Generic.kl and possibly qwerty.kl as well. Let me extract them and look at them side by side in notepad++
Okay here flash this attached file and you should be golden. ive edited all appropriate files.
Thanks for the zip, it works perfectly.

Nope the zip just disables the ability to press them. Lights and everything else controlling them will well should still work. The zip just says to android that search menu back and home buttons aren't available. Just the same as a galaxy nexus or tablet would.

Even though there is a tutorial that has been posted on this before, it is somewhat old and buried.
THIS DOES WORK ON ALL BUILDS OF TW BASED JELLYBEAN
You will need to do a few things before we start.
1. Go HERE and download the latest version of LMT Launcher. It would do you justice to also read that thread to understand the installation and setup process for the Pie Controls. Do all of that and then move on to step 2.
2. Grab this file and place it on either your external or internal SD card.
3. On your device, use any root filemanager of your choice (i.e. ES File Explorer, Root File Explorer, etc.) Find the Generic.kl file I included and copy it. Navigate to system/usr/keylayout and change the file called "Generic.kl" to "Generic.kl.bak" (DO NOT DELETE IT) then paste the Generic.kl file that you copied.
4. Go back to home and then go to Settings/Display/Touch Key Light Duration and select Always off.
5.Reboot your device and enjoy.
Credits go to DEF3NDER: If you want navbar softkeys instead of pie.

Awesome DEF3NDER. Just got a PM from Mattix724 this morning with this as well. I'll give it a go and let you know how it works out.
Edit-works great. And I took a screenshot with the power and vol down button as well. Question. When I'm on xda app, a menu button appears. Is there anyway to have that on all the time? Basically a virtual set of the cap keys, up, all the time? Thanks for this, very cool and SO easy.
Edit(again). Holy freaking crap Batman. Nevermind. I just noticed, that on every page, app, I pull up, except for the home page, the menu for that app is already in the top right corner. Actually, no. It doesn't locate itself, so I'm not able to use camera as is. Downloaded after market camera to use in the mean time, but really like the camera that came with jv. Lowering the dpi sounds like a viable option. I'll look into it this evening. Thanks for the idea DEF3NDER.

Thanks so much for this! I'm going to give this a shot. Not sure if it's really that useful/suits me, but it's always nice to have options.
I have been having some fun with this. Enabled the software keys, disabled the hardware keys, disable the back and menu button lights. Now it just looks like I have a sweet notification light area because you cant see those two buttons when they aren't lit up. I adjusted the pixel density all around to make is so I don't lose any app screen space.
The only issues I have are the icons on the launcher getting cut off on the bottom rows and the camera button is a little messed up, still usable, but there is a dedicated hardware button, so it doesn't really matter.
Now I just need to change the multitask button to a menu button and it will be pretty sweet!
there has to be an app that does this as well.

Why try to figure it out? As an app thats like 80kb and does a better job dude clearly that rom dev didnt want it to be best quality. You could have already taken a thousand of screenshots in perfect quality if you had just downloaded an app.

The reason why I want the built in is because the apps either put an icon on the screen or u have to use a shake movement for it which makes it bad since I'm always moving and the damn phone start taking screenshots if I find one that I could just merge it into the power menu or the screenshot combination buttons then yes it works For me

See thats easy to fix. Dude in most apps give you the option to turn it off any other ways to do it. And when I try to take a screenshot with power menu it would hit pause on games and bring me to a menu. Unlike using an app where it doesnt have that issue.

an app will not embed it to the power menu thats done within the ROM itself ask the Rom Dev to bake it in.
But an app like screenshot by Kastor Soft with the nexus icon for the app is really good.
