I would love to help. I'll post some of the dumps soon
Cool deal. Ill be really jumping into all of this tomorrow. I'm on winter break for 3 weeks so I got some time to kill. My first prioriaty is dumping everything, then I can dive into getting clockwork built, odin working, overclock/underclock kernels with ext2, lagfix, and some decent rom ports over here. (AOSP, Sense) Maybe even seeing about getting a team together for cyanogenmod on here.

Unfortunately I've already removed much of my bloatware but if I see anything on the interwebs in the way of dumps, I'll post it here.

MediaFire: Continuum System Dump
Note! This is from my Continuum which is rooted and modified. I undid all the changes I made(yay for keeping everything backed up!) so this should be bone stock. Let me know how else I can help.
Was going to send my phone to koush for clockwork today.

That's awesome ThePravus! Thanks! I'll be so much more comfortable modding things on my phone after he works his magic.
OMG this is absolutely amazing! I hope that you can get the dev community started. Anything else you need help with? I might consider being a tester if you do start. We should have a recovery soon, but that's no good if we don't have any ROMS.

Help
I am willing to help in any way, esp as a tester. I have modded mine extensively so a dump is out for me. I got OCLF to work early on in my efforts, but can't get it to work recently. It doesn't give me the option. Let me know how I can help.
Once we get Clockwork going, I'll be happy to test any ROMs. Between this and Gingerbread going to AOSP, this could get exciting quick....

Don't count your chickens before they hatch. I'm just hoping we get a stable recovery, but I'm not too worried. As soon as that happens... This phone is going to be even more EPIC, or vibrant, or fascinate me, or... OK I'll stop the corny jokes lol
I'm just afraid that getting ports from the Fascinate, that we won't get any new Ticker features and tweaks... That's the biggest thing we need right now...

Oooooo, I didn't think of that. That could be a problem. We're gonna need Samsung to release the API for that from what I remember.

I think we already are living without a fully functioning Ticker.... I would like to see a ROM that improves upon it....
1. third-party SMS and e-mail (Handcent/Gmail) support
2. ability to set refresh intervals
3. ability to drop a 4x1 widget into the Ticker (Tweetdeck or Pandora for example)
these are just a few things that I think would improve the Ticker... I'm sure there is a LOT more that can be done with this thing.
Also, our capacitive buttons (menu, home, back, search) are part of the screen, this is unlike other phones.... These will need to be added into any ROMs as well....
Not trying to be negative or pushy... Just want the devs to know what they're getting into...
How we doing on the stock system dump?

It's nice to have you aboard. I am loving the tablet base Roms, they are truly awesome. The only thing that sucks is the battery life.
If I helped you out in any way please thank me. Thanks.
Nice to see ya here in E4GT land... I thought when I ditched my Moment your name would be a distant memory.

Never thought you'd leave old Epic.
I'm on cm10.1 and it seems to always freeze and slow down which takes me more time to make calls or get to texts and send them. Get a lot of wait/close notifications and I want to know if there is just a simple epic 4g rom that will respond quickly and not freeze on me when I'm trying to get a girls number for example!
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app
Never got such things in CM10.1 for all 3 devices I installed it on, but if your goal is that simple, reverting to CM7 (highly recommended, speediest of all ROMs I've experienced, because it's GINGERBREAD) or even stock FC09/FC19 is a good idea.

Lazy ass
Why do people always ask these questions? Try roms out on your device and find the answers yourself! Each device responds differently.
If I were a moderator, I'd delete these threads every time they popped up, lol.

Nooo people always ask "what is the best rom" I'm not a noob ok I'm asking if anyone uses a rom that doesn't freeze or lag with everything like cm10 does. Your not a moderator and if you can't help then be silent.
Why would a try 10 roms just to see which one simply freezes the least when I could just ask?

Because every phone reacts different to every ROM. My epic hated cm7, but everybody here loved it. You have to try several different ones out for yourself and see which one you and your phone like best.

You may not be a new XDA user or new to flashing, but you have two replies here saying why answering this question is moot.
Either follow Andy's suggestion, or follow mine and frost's and flash roms until you find what works best for you & your device. Plain and simple, lol.
It probably looks like I'm being an asshole here, but we've had this asked so many times over the nearly 4 years this phone has been in production. It got old years ago, and the answer never changed.
Peace out guys, not everyone's a flashaholic I know, but yeah I had been one for about a year and tried so many ROMs so that's why I have a suggestion. If @dertdezzy just lacks time like I do now, then forgive him and let him fetch my answer and enjoy GB, but meanwhile @nikon120 's got a point in there, if there's time you should really use your brain and hand to sort these subjective things out.
Maybe it's time to shut this thread?

Come on, an epic 4g is an epic 4g they are not built differently one at a time..if the same rom works different for some people then its because they are doing something different..I'm sure there's a few roms that people in general agree on as one of the most stable, or the most lag free for example..just in general of course..its not that serious to where I have time to flash a new rom everyday, restore all my settings and set ups just to find the "perfect" rom for me

Actually no. There are differences based on tolerances on how the die is cut for the processors. Some could handle overclocking to 1.5Ghz and others could go no higher than 1.2Ghz. I have 2 no longer in service and at one time running identical software my computer would only recognize one...reinstalled drivers on computer and both were recognized again, Agreed that in most cases it is something different in software and matching up phone for phone in a purely clean flash should yield same results. Now throw in 3rd party apps and themeing and game over.
Yup you right u right, nuff said! But would cm7 and older roms tend to be more what I'm looking for with speed, less lagging and freezing?

They're pretty much stable and good to go. You will have more space for apps on a Gingerbread rom than a ICS/JellyBean rom. Also you should have less RAM used on Gingerbread than the other types as well.
Really you just have to decide either TouchWiz or CM based. If CM, then which OS type. After that point, it's pretty easy reduce the rom list.
On cm7 for past week or so...PERFECT!! EXACTLY what I needed, thanks to the good response I got

Ok, about a year ago i decided i wanted to try out building from source for my phone. Well that was all fine and dandy, but i didnt know how or where to start. I eventually learned and it turned out to be simpler than i thought! Although rather daunting at first i began to grasp the concept after awhile. So then i figured, "there ought' to be an easier way to do this". And here i am, putting all the things i learned over the year together, to create a guide to encourage everyone to give it a shot!
If you have any questions, or would like to contribute. Please post in the thread for everyone else to see. Thanks Also, i will eventually include text based guides as well.
Can you build?
To start building, your computer has to meet certain specifications or it may not work out. If possible try to meet the minimum requirements listed below. I will list my specs as well for those who may be curious
Minimum- May take hours to build (2-3)
Processor: dual-core 2Ghz
RAM: 4gb
HDD: 100gb free space
My specs- Takes at most 1hour and 15mins
Processor: AMD Phenom X6 1090T 3.5Ghz (6core)
RAM: 8gb DDR3
HDD: 1TB
Step 1- Select your distro
Alright, there are HUNDREDS of distros to choose from. For ease of following this guide i recommend staying with a debian based distro. Since commands tend to vary between Redhat, Gentoo, RPM, etc...
Some distros i recommend:
Ubuntu 12.04+ <--- my favorite
Elementary OS (latest)
Linux Mint 14+
Crunchbang Linux
Now after you have selected the distro you would like to use, install it! It's fairly straight forward, just follow the install wizard and you should be ok. (i can help you if you need me to)
Step 2- Setup your computer
So you've installed your OS of choice? GREAT! Now its time to configure everything to run the way its supposed to. Sound hard? Well trust me, its a piece of cake
Start with adding this line to the bottom of your ~/.bashrc with the commands below and then watch the video following that.
Code:
cd
Code:
sudo gedit ~/.bashrc
now add this to the bottom
Code:
export PATH=~/bin:$PATH
Step 3- Gathering the Source
Your done setting up your computer? Wasnt as bad as you thought was it? Well since your done with that we may as well grab some source while were at it.
.
mine!
back off! this is mine too
i know, i know... but just incase ANOTHER! :3

Only for the brave flashaholic!
Hey guys, I ported cyanogenmod 11 from d2att earlier, but I left my phone at my dads house so I am unable to test it myself.
What should work:
Data
Wifi (I believed I fixed)
Everything else.
What does not work:
I need you to tell me. (I NEED TESTERS!), until tomorrow morning when I can pick up my phone.
Legal stuff.
If you flash this, you are volunteering to be my ROM lab rat. To avoid any potential issues, I advise you all to back up your current ROM.
