Hello, I was wondering if it's possible to flash to a different carrier such as virgin mobile, straight talk, boost mobile, cricket, etc. Prepaid, something cheaper than $80-90 a month for unlimited everything. Also, will they blacklist or give my phone a bad ESN if I don't pay my bill? I just started my contract. Thank you.

If they did not get their end of the bargain, you won't get yours too, so pay your bills or just pay the ETF and sell off your phone.
You can flash it to other CDMA carriers, search for it around here.
So they WILL blacklist/bad ESN?

Blacklist only works per carrier. Verizon blocks Verizon, sprint blocks sprint etc. Cricket wont block a Verizon phone.

For the time being, this is half true. Nationally, a carrier independent database is currently in works. Per CTIA's last report to the FCC on the subject, the GSM database was complete Oct 2012 and the LTE database will be up and running this November. Additionally, both VZW and Sprint are currently participating in multi-carrier databases that are a bit more limited than the one that will roll out later this year. Coupled with this, the FCC is championing legislation that will criminalize modifying a device's IMEI to circumvent blacklisting.
So, my bill is due today. I want to flash it to cricket and Really want to keep my number. Will it work?

More than likely Verizon wont release your number if you owe money. Cricket will gladly give you a new number if your old one cant be ported.

No. They will not release a number when you still owe them a considerable amount of money. Furthermore, this isn't something that will just go away. You will get hounded for the money you owe. First by Verizon, and then by a third party debt collector. It will negatively affect your credit and there exists a possibility that a court judgment could be sought against you. On the off chance it comes to that, you'd be looking at owing more than the past due amount and ETF.
Have you tried calling Verizon and working with them to adjust your level of service to something you can afford at this time? Another option would be to sell the phone on Craigslist and use that to pay down the ETF. You could then get a prepaid phone which will assist in keeping your usage manageable until you're in a better situation financially.
Just a small example of how and why our economy is so f'd up.
good day.
Unless you don't care for the carrier, call them and see if you can work something out, like splitting your bill over two months and changing the plan.

I'm pretty sure that when I was in the military, I learned how to manage my damn finances.

I think there are 2 points here:
1. Berating strangers on the internet is just as unwise and unjust as doing so in person. We can't judge someone else's hardships and we have no right to try. Savings and planning can only go so far in the face of emergencies.
2. Solving financial problems by planning to violate your phone contract is also unwise and unjust. Contracts are binding (and if one person breaks them the cost gets passed on to everyone else), and emergencies are what savings and planning are for.
I, personally at least, think this thread is best resolved by saying: OP, I'm glad you worked it out with your provider without breaking your contract. Congratulations on your baby. Without knowing what emergency you are facing, I hope your next few months go better for you. Thank you for your service.

Hi.
I bought this phone 3 days ago. It's all stock. Untouched!
I am having reception issues at my house.
I have spent hours with t-mobile reps.
Finally they admitted that my house location is "borrowing signal" from other carriers, as they have no tower here. So i am borrowing from AT&T and (could it be - verizon?? that's what the rep told me in any case).
In any case, is this a legitimate way of leaving the contract i signed? Obviously I can't keep using T-Mobile.
Also, if it is a legitimate cancellation reason, what is going to be done with my phone itself? Do I need to ship it back? Do I get to keep it?
Thank U all !!!
Unless u paid retail for the phone, im sure it still belongs to the carrier? I do believe its a legit reason for tmobile to cancel the contract tho.

No. To be honest, it's partly a matter of principle - u buy a phone, U want it to work. but that's not the only thing. I work from home. I do a lot of talking, and I go outside, walk around with the dog. Blah blah... i need a phone that has signal!
The reason I am asking here, is that you guys are impartial. I know I can just call T-Mobile, but they might sell me something or not share the entire info. I am mainly interested in what is going to happen with the phone itself. I love the phone. I would even unlock it and move to ATT (and yes, limit myself to 2G - that's fine), but are they going to let me keep the phone?

Negative. Unless you paid full price for the phone, it still belongs to T-Mobile. However, if you cancel, and then head over to ATT, they'll have some nice phones as well, including the Skyrocket (our sister phone), AND the international SII.

Your best best is to check with T-Mobile and see if they will allow someone to take over your contract and if so start looking for someone to do so. 5 weeks goes beyond any return period I have heard and they will most likely they would say it isn't their fault you moved to an area where they don't have great reception.
Isn't the etf $200? If so you can pay that. Sell the phone on Craigslist, easily and buy another on Craigslist for similar price. Better yet get the note for att.

$200 is the carrier subsidized amount you pay. Sprint pays $300 for the phone upfront and make it back from you via you PAYING your bills. (they don't profit till the 2nd year of contract).
There is a reason OFF CONTRACT phones cost $500+.

im assuming your account wont be cancelled right away.. it will first be suspended for non payment then after so much time will be cancelled for non payment at which you would have so much time to pay it before it goes to collections.. once the account is cancelled the esn is good.. sprint still makes there money which is why they have etf's.. if you dont pay it they sell it to the collectors who harass you until its paid..

Yeah...I don't know what makes him think that if he's exactly 1 day late, they will cancel the phone. Sorry dude, doesn't work that way. I don't think they suspend service till you are 30 days late. Even then the account isn't "cancelled". Eventually it will be. The etf will be tacked on to the bill you already owe. After an amount of time, it'll then go to collections, in which case, the amount owed will "grow". At the end of the day, collections, late fees, etf fees. It will be big bucks and screwed credit.
So, I saw a girl write on Facebook that she is selling a T Mobile Galaxy S3. So I inboxed her and ask how much she wanted. She told me to make an offer, so I said I wouldn't pay any more than $300. Then she asked me would I pay $220? I told her yes!!!! Says its brand new used since June comes with box booklets etc and flawless condition! Did I just hit jackpot? Is the phone worth it? Since you told her they are going for 300(which is really cheap to start with for a s3) and she offered you 220 for it, seems too good to be true.
But if everything checks out OK with the imei then yes you scored big time.
But make sure you get pictures over the device. I've ran into so many scams on Craigslist that it wouldn't surprise me if they migrated to Facebook.

If it was done at the store Customer service can't do much as there's no proof to what you're claiming is true so the best option is to go back to store and vice versa. Actually, yes it will.
Carriers are not gonna go after the users (such as myself) but will definitely go after commercial unlockers, like the store I have bought 5 phones from and flashed 6 phones with. I buy the phones unsubsidized, so im ok, but with a possible $500,000 fine and prison time...I dont think my store will continue doing this.
Going to call them tomorrow and see what they say...
Edit: read the docket...im glad I got my note 2 flashed before it went into effect.

I get the ruling, but don't fully agree with the logic used. It centered around the cellphone service providers recouping the subsidy costs the give consumers. I just don't get why they needed it overall, especially for the general consumer, since the contracts state if you leave the carrier, you pay a fee; assuming you don't find a loophole to exploit. If that that fee isn't enough, raise it. As far as I know, there is nothing to say it can't be higher based on the phone purchase. Just has to go down over time. My thinking, make it cost the same as buying the phone unlocked.
At the same time, I wouldn't say Sprint makes phone friendly to switch carriers, compared to others who do not have build in SIM cards.
Personally, it's not going to stop me or that many people. I don't believe most people who unlock do it to change carriers. They're more interested in rooting for the ability to use custom firmware on the same carrier or use other applications.
That said, I can understand where people might be one these phones and try to go with something like Metro. I never looked into the long term costs, so I'm not sure how much money is really saved. The wore part is the ability to see the phone to offset the cost of upgrading to newer model because it limits the buyers to only those who want that same carrier. This may drive the prices even lower.
Without more numbers, I just think this more carriers being scared rather than working with each other so consumers are happy and they can make more money by increase the number of users.
