Hi Everyone,
My dealer in Canada just confirmed that they have the SGS2X T989D in stock and can sell me one tomorrow, and I want to start hacking it immediately, but before I throw a bunch of stuff at it and potentially brick it, and assuming I can get CWM Recovery and SU on it, how can I dump or back up the stock rom? I'm not a newb, but not super advanced either, so any help would be great! Thanks!

Hey guys, anyone know how to save/extract/dump/backup the stock Telus ROM for Recovery before we start flashing stuff to it?

Is it same as the T-Mobile version? Thinking about getting this phone from Telus as well but really worried about developer support.
Thanks
I would suggest not loading any custom roms yet. The roms were built for the t-mobile version. It's not a big deal, they work fine but the ROM thinks you have a T989 when you actually have a T989D.
The devs just need to incorporate our model in the current roms and it will be alright from there. The Telus model is rootable using the same procedure as the T-Mobile version.

EMERGENCY!!! I've been following your guides for rooting, etc. Now I was trying to flash a ROM, and when the phone booted into recovery, I didn't get the usual blue list of options. There were a few options, and then in yellow *MANUAL MODE* ... I tried flashing the roms anyway and it said in red "signature verification failure" ... and "operation aborted" (something like that) WTF?!?!? HEEEEELP!!!!

Sounds like you don't have a custom recovery in your phone yet. Look into flashing twrp's touch recovery. You tried to flash through the stock recovery.
Download ROM toolbox from market and to flash a recovery(twrp) go to tools>manage Rom and then on the top choose the manage tab. The top of the list is the option to flash a recovery. Flash recovery and then you could come back to the app to flash the ROM of your choice.

Thank you - and I'm sorry for my ignorance, but where do I find that and how do I install it?
I just edited my post, read again.
I guess I should ask, are you rooted? Or have you not done that yet? That app will not work without being rooted and without superuser permissions.

So... 1) what do you think is the best custom ROM out there right now?, and 2) what's the difference between ROM Toolbox and ROM Manager?

I used to use ROM manager but I switched to ROM toolbox. I just simply like it better. More options. I haven't used ROM manager in a while, so I don't even know what the current version offers. I prefer phantomhacker's blazer ROM. But if you like themed roms, there are a few out there. I am not on any custom ROM right now, just stock rooted with a few mods and tweaks. I had blazer ROM on my gs2 and was my favorite on that phone too. Just do allot of reading on each roms thread so you can see if there are any issues. I always read read read before flashing.

Sprint galaxy s3 android development section. It will say [ROM] in the title. If you are looking for cm9, cm10, aosp, or aokp type roms, look in the Sprint galaxy s3 original android development section.

I promise I'm not trying to insult you, but:
1. Your choice of thread title doesn't explain anything.
2. Your original post wasn't very coherent.
3. You failed to do the first thing when buying a new phone, which is read, read, read before even downloading a ROM.
Next time, please be as clear and detailed as possible when describing an issue, and choose a more relevant thread title. Next, troubleshoot; if the phone says "operation aborted", try rebooting the phone. Tell us what happened and what you've done.
EDIT: Seens that my PC/connection configuration were causing corrupt downloads and I forgot to check hashes on some firmware so, my mistake...
I have rooted, installed custom recovery (tried TWRP and philz), and a Odin rooted, deodexed stock ROM. And that's all I can make to work.
I have tried to install many TW based ROMS, the install is normal, and after reboot, the device do one of this things:
Stuck on the Samsung Galaxy Note II white Logo;
Bootloops ath the white logo;
Bootlooops at the Samsung colored logo;
As I did a CWM backup of the deodexed ROM, I usually restore it to get my phone back in use.
Any ideas?
Do a data /factory reset in recovery and reboot.

I think I covered all the bases... But the Note II seens to have some more involved workings than my previous Sammy devices...

The usual way: download the CWM package, put it on the internal SD, boot to the recover, wipe(s), install zip, reboot and...
Actually, I did manage to boot and use this custom rom, a port from Note 10. But I didn't like it. All the others I tried, all TW JB 4.1.2 based didn't worked...

I seen a post where the 4.2.2 Google edition rom was available to flash onto my tmobile S4, I was wondering if I can just flash it after wiping, or if I need the ktoonz kernel? I'm not even sure what the ktoonz kernel is, I've flashed ROMS before, just not on my s4. I'm rooted with twrp. And my build is the UVUAMDL one where I needed to get past boot loader lock thing. Sorry, I'm using my phone and I don't have the right links with me. Any help would be nice

I Highly suggest you don't flash anything until you read up on the forums and figure everything out. Read up on kernels, roms, gapps, bootloader, recovery etc. Then when you get that stuff down read about the roms you want to flash. If you flash am incorrect file you can hard brick your phone.

I'm fairly familiar with flashing. I know my way around twrp and cwm. I just never knew what a kernel was.. Never needed to use one on my vibrant... So I know how to flash, that's not my question... I want to know if, with a stock rooted tmobile galaxy s4 (UVUAMDL), can I just flash the Google edition rom from twrp, then I'm good to go? And will I lose my root? It looks pretty straight forward, I just want to make sure my phone is Ok for the rom, and if I need the ktoonz file, cuz some people were mentioning it...

I already posted the link.
I was looking at that, so I wipe everything in twrp, and flash it like normal, but I'll lose root? Download the chainfire zip and install it in twrp as well to get root again?
Quick question, if I ever wanted to send my phone into get serviced, I can completely wipe my phone back to stock by flashing that back on the phone using Odin, correct? That would do the root as well, so when I sent it in, they would be none the wiser?

Yea that's the version, get the odex version so everything works.
Jellybean doesn't have flash... It uses Google chrome as default browser unlike custom Roms that has a browser that has a browser built in.

Will there be completely stable versions of the Google edition s4 released sometime in the future? I'm just seeing way to many different versions of the same thing where some things aren't working properly, and it doesn't seem to be as simple as just flashing the rom. All sorts of other stuff needs to be done like changing build.prop and whatnot. I just want to be able to flash the rom and be done with it... Is that possible right now? Or no. I guess I'm not as familiar with all the terminology as I thought. I still don't know what a kernel really is, I flashed one once and it just made my cwm recovery menu different... And I know I needed a specific kernel to flash specific ROMS.. Is that the case here with these Google edition roms?

The i9505G kernels work just fine.
OK, so I have been rooted almost a year, and have flashed several roms. I am currently on 4.1 of I believe Hybrid's rom. I believe I have had a 4.3 at one time but my last flash, whenever I started trying to flash a 4.4 version I started running into problems along the way. Is there anything special I need to do to upgrade to 4.4? Like besides flashing the rom, is there anything else I need to flash? Anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks!

No one still has answered lol. I tried to flash a few different 4.3's and they kept failing. I'm using TWRP or whatever it's called 2.6.0.0 not sure what that's about. I had to flash an older rom I had on my computer to get it to allow my phone to work.
I prefer using CWM or Philz Touch which is based on CWM rather than TWRP. I tried TWRP with a few ROMs but they always failed to install. Once I switched to CWM, they installed without issue. You can flash the tar version of Philz using Odin.

To run 4.4.2 ROMs, you should update to the latest 4.1.2 bootloader, load a custom recovery, boot into recovery, wipe cache, Dalvik, data, system, and flash the new ROM.

I already updated my bootloader to the one that said "you cannot downgrade from this one or you will brick your device" I think that's the latest one I'm not sure lol.
By "Boot into recovery" are you meaning boot to the recovery screen? Sorry, I like to make sure of what I am doing so I don't brick anything lol. Although in a month I'm buying the Note 3 .
How do I go about switching back to CWM? Sorry to ask and sound dumb -- which I am not I have an associates of science in computer programming but just reciently switched to Mechatronic Engineering due to higher job growth in my area. I digress.
I could probably find dozens of articles on here how to go about it, but its generally quicker if someone just posts the link to the correct one to use for my device, every time I go searching these forms, I end up on every-which phone other than mine -- I do apologize.

I can not verify anything about the I747M, I have the AT&T I747. However I have heard it is safe for you guys to use the I747 D2ATT version of cwm. I am trying out the philz touch cwm that audit13 keeps suggesting, it is highly modifiable. Thus far I am happy.

Go to the general section and read the stickies here is a quote from the recovery thread I have heavily clipped it you need to read the whole thing in its original form. From what I read it is safe for your phone to use the D2ATT recovery image, I however take no responsibility for any thing that happens successful or not if you you flash it you wear it...
dstruct2k said:
So you've got your device rooted, and you want to install a custom recovery? Great! Don't just follow any guide you stumble across though, as some of the early recovery packages for the "AT&T" model were actually just copies of the custom Sprint recovery, and then you'll have all sorts of fun trying to install ROMs. ("Status 7" errors anyone? )
While this may seem difficult, it's really not. Grab a recovery image (these files end in ".img") such as ClockWork Mod (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP) for your device. Most ROM developers say to use CWM, but they both work equally well.
In our case, we need an image for the Samsung Galaxy S3 AT&T. Telus, Rogers, Bell, and SaskTel phones are (almost*) the exact same phone as AT&T, if you have one of these devices, you will be installing the AT&T recovery.
*NOTE: While we're on the topic, let's take a second to talk about what makes the Canadian I747M different from the AT&T I747.
The short version is... The modem. AT&T is using completely different and incompatible modem firmware in their phones when compared with the Canadian models. Rogers, Bell, Telus, and any other Canadian I747M are the same device (Samsung worked some strange voodoo and got all the Canadian carriers to agree on the same hardware!) which means that if Rogers releases a new modem firmware update, a SaskTel user could install it without issue. AT&T modem updates will not work on Canadian models, nor will Canadian updates work on AT&T phones! I've tried it. Trust me. You don't want to deal with the hassle of fixing it.
