My brother upset with my S3 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Thought I would share this real quick. So I live in a 4G LTE area and my brother lives two houses from me. My brother who has a iphone 5 comes over and says "man I wish Sprint had there 4G LTE network setup here". I look at him and start laughing, I tell him "bro I have full 4G LTE on my S3". Now he has been on Craigslist the past two days trying to trade his iPhone 5 for a S3.
Hahaha just found this very funny and had to share with fellow Android users. Btw not the first time I've heard of no 4G LTE on iphones while the Android phones are picking up the signal.

I didn't think the IPhone had a weak radio. I bet it's a setting he has that's disabled 4g. Especially if you've got full signal

Heh I noticed this too, although it tends to be in areas with less than perfect LTE reception, when we first noticed it, the speeds were drastic enough between LTE and 3g that numerous slanders against my friend's iPhone were made

My girlfriend's iphone 5 has a better radio than my S3, both were bought brand new. If I'm on a TW rom though I get the same service as she does, but on AOSP, everywhere I go I have exactly 2 bars less than her..

Bars mean nothing. TW has double the amount of bars that AOSP has. What you need to check is dBm.

Hmm, wife has an iphone 5 and I have an s3 both on sprint. I'll try some informal tests to compare at our house. Voice does well on my phone but it sometimes hops between 3g and lte if wifi is off so will see how hers holds on to lte.

Before throwing the rom or phone to the fire based on bars of signal, I would go to settings and scroll down to 'about device' and look at signal strength, you might find it's no different, may have something to with coding in aosp vs tw, but in reality it's only visual.

No LTE for t-mobile gs3

I read that even when t-mobile jumps on the lte band wagon in 2013, that our gs3 phones will not be able to take advantage of the new speeds (what a drag). I'm not sure if this is really the case, but I posted the link to the article below.
http://www.galaxys3newsblog.com/t-mobiles-samsung-galaxy-s3-to-miss-lte-yet-another-dissappointment/
One thing you have to remember you always want to buy a phone that works right now for you not a phone that would work better in the future, I'm happy with hspa+ and by the time I get lte from tmobile I might have another phone anyways so I think I'm cool with that, it bee discuss in another topic too
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
This is true. I just thought that I would post this for those who didn't have the benefit of reading the other post. For those that don't change their phones often and intend on keeping the gs3 for some time, I thought that this was good information to help them make a well informed purchase. I hope this helped anyone that didn't know and wants to buy a gs3.
My HSPA+ speeds are consistanly faster than my friends Verizon LTE. Plus HSPA+ uses dramatically less battery. Heres my speeds in Detroit.

Same here in San Diego. Verizon was fast out of the gate but they heavily over-subscribed their network and now they are lame. AT&T is the crazy fast at the moment but I expect them to be in the same boat as Verizon this time next year.

Practicly yes on stock 4g shows when you connected to umts(3g), hspa and hspa+(t mobile calls this 4g cause it could go up to 42mbps) but if you changed yours to stock look ( aosp) you will see your phone going at all of them and won't stay connected to one at all times, you might no notice because their 3g is not crazy slow where you live, I have good coverage specially where I live and work so I don't mind it

It does have LTE, just like the T-989 did, its just disabled by default. You can access this setting by opening the dialer and typing *#*#4636#*#*, and selecting radio type.

[Verizon] How is the reception?

hello,
How is the reception on the Verizon Nexus? I heard there was a radio issue but not sure if it was true or if it got fixed. Anyway... any feed back will be appreciated.
Better.. was like utter crap before the last release.. battery was doing well and 4g signal worked as well as can be expected..
it's been great in Phoenix
It depends on your location. Some areas have great VZW coverage, others not so much. You should ask your local friends if they like their coverage.
However, I have found VZW has better penetration into large buildings. When I had AT&T + iPhone, I always lost signal at work unless I stood by a window. With VZW, my GNex rarely drops calls no matter where I am (of course, the two different phones may have been a factor).
You hear complains about the GNex radio and dropped calls/data, but you shouldn't let that sway your decision. Every model that comes out will have its share of units with constant signal problems, and the GNex is no different. Owners of such phones fill the forums with complaints & requests for help (legitimately so), which tends to give the phone a bad reputation. But the vast majority of GNex owners never have major signal problems. And those that were having signal loss with the original radios will most likely agree that signal quality has improved significantly with the latest firmware.
Thank you for those quick replies... I was asking because in some places I read is a bug with ICS and others that is the radio. I got a GS3 but i'm going to return it and get a Nexus till the new Nexus comes out.
I have good signal just about everywhere.

I've only had mine for a week and Verizon signal is great. 4g is great too. Only thing that's weak is Wi-Fi for some odd reason. Honestly... the Galaxy S3 is a sweet phone , played with one yesterday. But for some reason I like my Nexus better. The screen on the GS3 is better but that's about it. And not worth it yet cause of its locked bootloader. You will be happy with a Nexus.

There are definitely areas where Verizon is not king. I spend a week or so in Torrance every year, and Verizon sucks there bigtime. In fact, I think ATT had LTE right on Redondo Beach. Or so I was told. I barely had 3G, although to my defense I was on JB at the time.
My experience has always been very good with this phone. This link says it all!
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/25921-this-is-why-your-verizon-nexus-signal-sucks/
I've learned to ignore the signal bars all together, as long as my texts and calls go through; which they do even when there's no bars showing.
4G is spotty on here, but I'm on wifi 95% of the time anyway, and on 3G the remainder...4G isn't worth anything to me really.
Cheers
I have no problems in Pittsburgh

Need help choosing between gnex and s3 [Sprint]

Im switching services to sprint and looking to either get the nexus or the s3. All hardware specs aside which would most likely be the better choice..? From what I read it looks like the s3 is stuck in 3g while lte rolls out for sprint. Im leaning towards the nexus as its a pure android phone with no bloat on top of it. Would it be a smart choice to go with the gnex or get the s3 and wait for the 4g lte?

GNex is LTE too so you would be stuck on 3G either way. Sprint 3G is terrible in case you didn't already know.

3g isn't bad for me. It's an easy choice IMO. If you want access to the latest software, and want it to be fully functional, and stable, go Nexus. The GS3 doesn't have "that" much going for it over the Nexus.

"All hardware specs aside" makes it very simple. Galaxy Nexus hands down. But please get the GSM version to get the full benefit and all of the freedom from contracts, carrier restrictions, and official software delays.
If your not getting GSM nexus may as well get the better hardware. S3 would be my recommendation, though I'll personally stick with my GSM nexus.
That's my unbiased opinion, considering the forum your on you should know what most people will say.

Dont be lured by the unlimited marketing engine from Sprint. Their network is horrible. 3g is more like 2g at best and 4g is hit or miss. I imagine given their track record, LTE will be the same. Unlocked GNEX on T-mobile is the way to go! Thats what I did and couldnt be happier.

Bad 3G? It really all depends on location. Really if your not in an area where LTE will be very prevalent. Then go with the GSM. Otherwise you may want to reconsider the sprint nexus. I've seen people getting consistent 25+ Mbps. And just as much upload. That plus non throttled unlimited is heaven sent.

Why couldn't sprint include 4G with 4G LTE on GS3?

Since sprint is going to take atleast year or more to roll out 4G LTE all over US, they should have included 4G capabilities with S3. Do you guys agree?

If 3G was better on your GS3 then your GS2 then i would suggest flashing different modems until you find one that works well.
I did this before i got my GS3 and found not all modems are created equal when it came to the GS2.

What's the next LTE Android phone for T-Mobile?

I was thinking of getting another phone soon to replace my crappy Sensation and from my brief research, the GS3 may or may not have it in the hardware to support T-Mobile's upcoming LTE network. With the One X+ cancelled, am I only left with the GNote 2? I'm really not trying to carry that big of a phone around . Will there be any announcements by T-Mobile in the upcoming months to release phones for the holiday season? I'm keeping my fingers crossed . Thanks in advance for any insight or details.
The T-Mobile S3 will NOT connect to their future LTE network. The Note 2 probably won't either. Their LTE network is even close to ready to begin rolling out.

The note 2 is the closest one to get lte it pass by fcc by 1900aws and 700(Verizon band), they were rumors of tmobile making arrangements with Verizon so we probably get it then (if you have a supported device) having said that I don't worry I get up to 24 mbps on tmobile and love it, I use 20GB last month with unlimited so ain't going anywhere for a while

While I'm sure getting 30-60 mbps down (seems average on other LTE networks) is really cool, its more of a signature spec - or bragging spec... 10mbps+ on 4G is plenty fast for me, especially considering I've been using an iPhone on T-mobile for years stuck on 2G EDGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4G is like LUDACRIS SPEED for me (anyone? spaceballs? anyone???)

+2 i always tell people that the difference isn't that much when most of the stuff we use it for isn't are all small stuff... besides Roms. And even with that the difference is probably a couple second

On Verizon's LTE, I pulled on average 15-25mbps. It peaked out at about 30. On T-Mobile's Faux-G, I pull on average 10-20 mbps. I peak out at about 25.
LTE is not noticeably better in any way other than speed tests. Latency had been about 100ms for both as well. Primary difference had been LTE outages on Verizon seemed to last 12-72 hours whereas HSPA+ outages on T-Mobile seem to last 30-600 seconds.
Sent from my phone. Prepare for atrocious Swype typos.
Just in case you guys dont know, the Note 2 WILL support lte for tmo here is the source..

S3 it is. I've seen some hovering around $350 in my area so that will do. I just can't stand this HTC Sensation and the reboots any longer. Thanks all for the replies.

You have to be careful. If they're going to file an insurance claim on it. Your phone will be blacklisted

30-60 is average? I've never seen anyone around here go faster than 22 mbps and in that context, my GS3 gets 15-16. The difference isn't very large at all.
First of all don't get T-mobile their HSPA+ Network gives me 0-0.50Mbs around all Brooklyn, even if signal is below -60dBm

Any way to prevent this from happening? Make a phone call before buying? Call tmob customer service?
By the way, since the Note 2 will be coming out by the end of this month or maybe early November, I think a lot of people will try to dump their GS3 to upgrade. Will craigslist prices lower? I'm seeing 300-350 on average right now.
