[Req] AOSP MMS for TW UVMC6 4.1 JB - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I'm seeking an AOSP experience in the recent TW for our phone. Seeing other phones like the s3 get AOSP MMS working is exciting. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2103108
Can a dev come up with something for our device?

I always thought MMS was tied to the framework and one can't simply replace TW MMS with one from CM?

You can push the aosp mms and have the tw mms back up and see. It's the same imo. I could be wrong but just nanoid and you'll be fine.

If anyone does this let me know if it works, it's about the only thing keeping me from switching to tw since aosp can gave group messaging.

1st of all I'm not responsible for anything that happens to your phone. You're responsible for making the decision to do this.
With that said..please make a nanoid backup first!
If you're rooted use root explorer push the apk into your system/apps folder and fix permission to rw-r-r then reboot. It's simple, fairly simple.

Yes it does work...I'm currently running AOSP MMS with Emjois right now. You just need to rename the SecSms and KeygaurdWidget apk. The keyguard widget is what show on your lockscreen so if you have that active and the AOSP MMS notification it would look funny.

Not working tested for 4.1 touchwiz. Renamed others, set permissions reboot does not even show up as an app.

Group Messaging for SecMms on TW
Hey guys, not gonna lie, I'm excited to see some discussion on this topic in the T989 forum! I'm working on this very thing for my T989!
I like the TW messaging app so I'm working on a Verizon port of TW SecMms.apk. I don't really like the AOSP themed mms app, but I'm down for trying that and getting it to work as well. There are other files you have to modify like framework2.jar and SecTelephonyProvider.apk to get the group messages to thread right. I still have a few bugs...like not being able to send photos while on WiFi calling, and the messages I send to the group coming back to me in a separate thread...but other than that, once I make a little more progress in figuring that out I'm going to write up a guide.
I'm not a developer, I'm a curious noob who isn't afraid to try stuff and brick my phone. I'm here to learn from geniuses who are smarter and cleverer than I am! If in anyway my noobishness has contributed anything intelligent, thanks are always appreciated.

I need a littile more help

So I just installed the jeti mindtrick rom v7. Its great but I want the jb mms, so im having trouble install it. I know what I need to rename, but what do I rename it to?? Also if there is a zip that does this by installing in twrp that would be helpful.

Yea unfortunately it doesn't work w/ Calk's ROM, it just removes both apps , tried both flashing it and manually pushing it via Root Explorer....
I tried pushing these with rootexplorer. After pushing, they don't show up in the app drawer and I got FC with the contact storage and messaging after that. I tried pushing my backed up phone app and contact app and they both were still missing. Only after pushing the other ICS contact apk was I able to get both my phone and contacts back. Something is wrong with both of your APKs. I'm running stock deodexed no-ciq

I'm guessing you can just push the file, set the permissions and away you go.
Some might need certain files to work, but I believe the others are okay. For example, I've heard that pushing the MMS app doesn't work, but the ICS AOSP Gallery does work and actually looks better.
Download an aosp nexus galaxy rom and pull it from /system/app.
Try it and report back!

Not sure that it will work since TW is heavily cooked into the OS. I'm no dev so I could be very wrong there but if you wanna try it its up to you. All the system apps and so forth are gonna be in /system/app or /system/framework

The AOSP MMS app kinda works. I am able to send messages if I create a new thread but it FC right after I send. It will receive messages and they display in the notification bar but when opening them it will FC. Im going to play around with it and see what I can do.
AOSP gallery works.
AOSP camera works.
Tried both of the above yesterday but didn't like ICS enough. Back to CM7.
Someone try the dialer now.

I tried to take some apk from Eugene's cm7 build to avoid compatibility issues with my juggs rom, calculator worked with no problems...calendar sort of works, it FCs when you try to sync calendars. Dialer constantly FCs nonstop after trying to replace it...tried wiping caches and fixing permissions but no dice...and that was the one thing I wanted to work most of all....contacts didn't work either wouldn't open without FC.
I guess I'll just have to wait patiently for Eugene to develop cm7 more...I'm very excited he did a great job on the initial build and it looks like the next buld will fix a lot of bugs

I can confirm that the aosp dialer can not just be pushed. It will fc constantly.

[Q] Possible to install AOSP Messaging app on TouchWiz ROM?

Hi all,
After trying out CM10.1, I've found it to be a little too unstable at this early stage and have flashed back to Wanamlite. I can live with TouchWiz for now, but the one app on TouchWiz I really can't stand is the Messaging/SMS app.
Is it possible to flash an AOSP/vanilla version of the Android messaging app onto my phone?
Would it need to replace the TouchWiz one, or would it work side-by-side with it?
Where could I get an up to date AOSP SMS app?
Any help would be great!

Its possible. It replaces the tw version. There is one in themes/apps section for the sprint s3. You have to push the file to system/app. Rename it and set perm.

Works a treat. A little bit different to the steps they advised though; putting mms.apk in the system/app folder with the correct permissions wouldn't work - I could put it in there, but the application wouldn't actually load when rebooted.
I then tried installing it as an APK, but no go; Android said there was another system app installed. So I moved secmms up one level, rebooted into recovery, fixed permissions, and now it's fine.

Hmm. Honestly I'm not sure, never tried it myself. But I vaguely seem to remember reading elsewhere that someone did exactly that and it worked for them. (If I can find a link to the comment in whatever thread I read it in I'll post it.)
But you know how it works around here, do a backup first and then give it a shot. If it works, great and let us all know. If it doesn't, restore your backup and let us all know. : )
