I thought we should be able to have our SGS III's show up as a media or mp2 player. It seems no matter what USB device I plug into, it is not recognized as a media player.
In particular, I have tried in the USB of cars: a Lexus, and a Mercedes. I have also recent purchased a Pioneer BT Car radio for my old '56, and it too does not recognize it.
Do I need to have my music in a particular folder or something? Any ideas?
Dunno about you, but mine does. The icon looks like a mp3 player with headphones in explorer on windows 7.
Have you tried to open media player with it plugged in ?
I run mine through Bluetooth on a Highlander but haven't tried connecting it to a USB device too stream media.

I don't know that Windows is a problem. Don't use it through Windows (same music already available on the PC). But never has worked for me on any device such as listed in the OP.

Confirmed. I tried with the media player open, still no go.
I have my music in a folder on my external SD. I don't recall what the regular folder on the internal SD is. Was wondering if I had music there if it may work.

Hi,
One of the features i was looking forward to on the Defy was the built in DLNA functionality.
I am using a PC running XBMC that has my audio collection ripped mainly in FLAC with a little MP3 & OGG. Ideally i would like a way to transcode the FLAC to OGG when tranfering to the phone over DLNA but i will need to work on a solution for that (maybe Coherence? Hadn't heard of it but a little googling has sent me in that direction but will take a bit more homework). In the mean time i am happy to have FLAC on my phone despite the file size as i am expecting a 16GB card but given the weather i think it may take at least a few more days to arrive.
The problem is that when i transfer a FLAC file over DLNA it states that the file is not compatible* and asks me to confirm that i am happy transfer it it, i say yes it downloads the file. That's fine but it asks again with every single file so if you choose to download an album it asks every track so you can't even leave to run whilst you go do something else as it stops transferring at each prompt.
Any idea how to overcome this?
*i have PowerAmp installed which is compatible with FLAC.
i have solved my problem a different way. I just don't use DLNA.
Using Banshee music player i can connect the Defy via USB cable and transfer any audio file to it and Banshee trancodes on-the-fly into .ogg.
Solved.

Yeah... I agree. But I am connecting to a couple of computers and a Buffalo Link Station over wireless. I can USB through my computer, but would love to find a way around confirming every download I want. I'll ask this question on the T-Mo and Motorola forums which are monitored by Motorola dudes. Really, the DLNA function is so damned convenient.
Hi, I'm looking for a way to stream all pc audio to my android phone. The idea is to use the android phone as wireless headphones.
This would probably involve some sort of client server setup similar to Gmote, or what the winamp app does. However I only want audio, so that I can play Video on my TV and listen via wifi on my headphones through my android (HTC Desire).
I've searched the forums, and have only found a few similar questions but no solutions. Its my opinion that this would be an excellent app, if a developer would pick up on it.
I have looked at virtual audio cable as a possible solution - unfortunately I don't have the tech know-how to acheive this. Possibly the audio could be grabbed by VAC and input into Winamp (e.g.) and then streamed via winamp to my phone?
.... any ideas.

@eKeith I have the SE MW600 headphones they can be used to pair up to 3 devices simultaneously (multipoint technology).
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
These are then just wireless headphones? The idea is to be able to use wired headphones wirelessly, by stalin audio over wifi to our phones.

I was also looking for something like this. Currently the Desire comes with a Bluetooth profile to do the opposite - that is direct all phone output to elsewhere e.g. laptop, but it'd be great for the other way around!
Thanks MasDroid. I have a pair also but not with me on my long weekend vacation...

OK, then you want to do more than "use the Android phone as wireless headphones" as per your first post. You want your phone to receive the audio in order to process it? If so, can you clarify? Sounds interesting and potentially useful.
Will VLC serve your purpose? You can setup a VLC http server on your PC and you can browse your PC files from your phone VLC app. Not sure but maybe, on the PC, you can direct all audio to a filestream. Anyone?

we are thinking of an app that streams whatever sound is coming from the pc to the android phone. me for example i control my pc with the phone via gremote when im laying on my bed. and because the cable of my wired headphones are too short i cannot listen to videos and movies without disturbing the ppl at night. so such "active" apps like the one with vlc and so on isn't really what (at least) im looking for. it should be passive and just stream the whole audio.
i hope u understand

Pretty sure gmote can stream music to your phone. There is a little check box to say weather it's phone controlling media player on your pc, or pc streaming media to your phone. Use it when I'm doing gardening so I have access to all 200Gb of my music.

I'm trying to find an app or a way to browse the music that is stored on my phone and then stream it to my htpc (Windows 7) and then play it on my surround.
I have figure out how to browse the music the htpc has on the phone with xbmc remote and gmote but that's not what i want. Bluetooth or Wifi should both be fine.
Also if i would like to stream pictures and videos too, it would be a bonus but not really important right now.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
You should be able to pair your phone with the htpc via Bluetooth at which point it should be available as an audio input device. This shouldn't require any third party drivers or anything, have you tried this yet?

hmmm ok, this is not what i'm looking for.
So here is the lay out:
1. Music on the phone
2. Phone connects to PC, preferably with WiFi but i will take BT if need be
3. PC is connected to Sound System
4. Phone streams music on the pc, sound comes out on the sound system connected on the PC
5. Selection of songs happens on the phone, next, forward, pause etc
6. Monitor on the pc is off the whole time
I also have a PS3 ... so instead of PC it could be that.
That's what's going on with my set up, all it does is play everything your phone speaker would through your computer speakers... right?
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
My way, it automatically connects to my phone without asking.
I play whatever music I want on my phone and my computer plays the sound
You can try and find third part software but for WiFi they only function as remotes

I used to be able to click the remote playback icon (top right corner) on the stock music player, and the music will play on my PC.
I don't remember having to set anything up, seems like everything just work seamlessly (no AllShare Play, etc.)
However, after the firmware and KIES upgrade; this remote playback to PC doesn't seem to work. The music player doesn't seem to recognise the PC as a nearby device. I even tried installing AllShare Play for PC, and it doesn't work.
Interestingly, my LG smart-tv is recognised as a remote device, and when I press the remote playback, the music now play on my LG tv.
Anyone able to help me fixing my remote playback to PC ? What am I missing?
THanks in advance
Reinstall kies.

Still doesn't work :-o; any other ideas?
I mean this is ridiculous that a top tier phone is so difficult (impossible) to sync playlists on, I am also pretty knowledgable regarding digital music, phones, and computers and still cannot get this working after months. Using MTP i can occasionally get ONE playlist to sync using winamp but when i try to do more it will erase the other ones or clear them out. I then got an app that puts my external SD card ino mass storage mode and that almost works but after adding about 20 songs to a playlist only 5 or so actually showed up. Doubletwist does not work. Windows Media player did not work. Using Kies it puts the songs on my phone but not the playlists.
If anybody can actually do this please share how. I used to have a captivate and this was as simple as it should be. So frustrating that i have spent this much time on it and still haven't gotten anywhere.
I just copy music over WiFi with es file explorer. Shared off some folders on my Windows box and I'm good to go

it's not getting the music on there that is the problem it is the actual playlists. I want to be able to go through all my music on my computer and make playlists then transfer them onto my phone and it is damn near impossible.

hm, i never got around to it myself, i just dump all my music on a 64GB MicroSD and there they are, but my mom sync'ed playlists i think with windows media player on my old GS3. MTP mode, debug in developers options ON.
It's more about what program you're using. I personally use isyncr. Though I find it strange that winamp isn't working.
Try "easyphonesync" from the playstore.
i'll check out a couple of the suggestions. It's actually not even so much an issue of 'syncing' the playlists either, more so just being able to transfer them one way from my computer to my phone
+1 for rsync
I shopped around for a couple of weeks for software to sync my playlists AND music. (I'm on Mac OS)
I couldn't find anything better. Give it a shot.
