Ok so I finally got ny HTC rooted again but I have a few questions.
What is flashing a Rom? What does it do and what are the advantages?
How do I use mods like battery, taskbar, icons, keyboards, etc...?
Sorry for being so noobie.

So when you flash a rom you are basically removing your current system and installing a whole new system such as Android JellyBean or Sense. However they come with modifications that include speed, stability, new features, etc. Many roms such as OneV allow you to customize the battery. Keyboards can be installed on any roms. Check this out: HERE

I had HTC HD2 and I installed Android on it, but now I have HTC DHD and android is already build in and it runs grate.
Why install/flash custom ROM?
What are pros and coins?
To name some advantages;
Full control over the phone (root)
Remove bloatware (Default apps the come shipped with the phone / carrier applications)
Themes
Overclocking / Underclocking
Get updates before your region (2.3)
Many more advantages...
Only con i can think of is you have to revert anything if you were to send it in for repairs etc.
Cons..... if you don't read and follow the directions correctly, you could brick your device.
Pros...... overclocking, backup/restore, better battery life, more customisation, access to more apps, faster updates to new android versions, debranding......

And seems like that isn't really the case anymore. Someone (mike19xx from the forums) sent in their DHD with custom rom for repair and got it back without any problems.
Thanks for replays!
Please sugest me some good ROM. And where better save apps on SD or phone memory.
And also please recommend some apps for productivity.

Non-sense, cyanogenmod7 all the way.
Sense, leedroid 2.2.2
Search the themes and apps threads for other stuff like add-ons.

Android Revolution HD 3.2 or 4 (If you want gingerbread)
Although im thinking about CM7 unsure yet
It depends on your needs. On the rom threads (or even sites) you can usually find the features and you should consider yourself to think about if it's senseful for you. If you are just a "normal user" who probably doesn't need things like root access or overclocking and extra possibilities like ftp, ssh, vnc, etc. servers with full access it may not be so convincing for you. Usually you get a good speed improvement from several roms and as said newer version without branding. But also bugs you won't have in stock roms (but maybe other bugs from stock remain then ) as developing such things is never "perfect".
An important fact could be that you can only backup anything properly with root access afaik. But this should also be possible with altered stock roms.
Generally you get yourself some freedom I would say.
For the roms: You should do some nandroid backups using clockwork recovery and then simply switch by backing up, installing/restoring and then compare what you like more.

Although, if you are very happy with how your phone behaves, you might want to think again if you really want to flash a custom rom.
Pros are as mentioned in above posts. Cons: you might brick your phone.
In any case, if you root / s-off your phone, you will have a device that is enabled for the future. If HTC decides not to update your device to the latest android version, you will be able to do so yourself if a dev has cooked it to be used with DHD.
You never know if HTC will be able to fix all exploits in future OTA updates(unlikely, but still).

I believe the chances of bricking your phone is quite narrow.
I almost bricked my phone, by trying to install "FULL WIPE" via ROM Manager ( ROM manager boots into CWM and runs the ZIP and reboots it ) .
For those who dont know, FULL WIPE zip will clear out all traces of ROM on your system. Essentially, I or rather ROM Manager rebooted my phone without having any ROM installed.
But thankfully a simple battery pull was all that was needed to fix it. I was able to get back to the CWM, from where I installed the new ROM, and everything was working as "desired"
If you're happy with your current stockrom and don't mastrubate on quadrant scores to impress your co-workers or friends on birthday party......stay on stock, my 2 cents

Haha, that's exaggerating it a bit mate!
Not everyone who uses custom ROMs are concerned with superficial benchmark scores! Most will agree they don't relate to real life performance.
The reason I use custom ROMs are thus:
1/ Increased stability
2/ Bug fixes
3/ Increased REAL LIFE performance
4/ Superior battery life
5/ Full customisation
6/ Added features
HTC makes some great phones, but XDA Developers make then way better

true, but If I read some replies here on XDA it makes you think
Humm, have you even tried a custom rom?
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
yes tried ARHD (3.0, 3.1, 3.2), I went back to stock as there where all little issue's with it, that are not in stock.
I need a stable, trustworty platform, which you don't get by pressing the last juice out of the phone hardware. I think the devs do great work though, guess it is just not for all of us
Now I stop, cause this is NOT on topic anymore. Bottomline if you're happy with your phone the way it is from factory (topic starter), then there is no need to use a custom rom
I use a near stock, deodexed rom. Only thing I have gained is root and the ability to add themes, such as the funky power control widgets. I have used other roms in the past but there are from time to time issues if the rom has been modified too much.
So I've been doing this stuff for a while now and have become very fluent in the droid rooting lingo but I am getting mixed messages on a few things.
ROMS and Kernels...
I understand that Kernel changes how different pieces of the hardware are utilized and the ROM is more or less how to interact with the hard ware but can a ROM ( such as CM# ) have it's own kernel. Meaning if I installed such and such a kernel, then did a clean install with CM7, would the such and such be wiped out and replaced with CM7's own kernel?
Correct, when you flash Rom B, the kernel you had with Rom A is gone, but does exist in the backup, if you made one. Hence, when you restore Rom A, you get the kernel that was backed up with it.

Alrighty. Second little question...can't seem to find a clear answer for this... Is CyanogenMod a "Sense" rom or AOSP?
AOSP
CM is an AOSP ROM. It is based on the android open source project rather than the HTC Sense coding. If you are using CM7 or any other AOSP ROM you will not have any of the HTC widgets or lockscreen or any of the touches that are sense. However there are lots of apps in the market that will mimick Sense pretty well. To include people widgets that are scrollable.
The allure of alot of the AOSP ROM's is that they run faster or smoother. This would be due to them having a smaller file size.
You can always give it a try and if you don't like it jump back to a backup... I always recommend a back up.
Hope this helps

My knowledge of CM7 is pretty limited, but in my experience, most (if not all) ROMS come with their own kernal that the developer likes best for his ROM.
Hi, I'm a new member here but have been reading these forums for a while and must say are fantastic.
I have flashed the VU 1.31 ROM on my desire HD and have used for a week now, I carried out a standard restart and suprisingly the sense 3.0 style theme that comes with the ROM had disappeared. The lockscreen I could change in the settings but after the phone is unlocked that homepage is still sense 2.0 style and I can't get back to standard ROM theme.
Advice would be appreciated.
Have you got a Nandroid backup you can revert to?
From my own experience I make backups regularly, especially just before flashing a new ROM, just after flashing a new ROM and again before and after flashing updates, radios, bug fixes, miss, etc.
Have you tried reporting it to the developer of the ROM or reading through posts relating to the Rom? Although it might be arduous reading through hundreds of pages of posts, I often not only find the solution but also other mods to the ROM worth flashing.

I'm a new Android user and I'm using Android Revolution HD 9.4.0.
I've been looking through the 'What does your Home Page look like' Thread and I'm interested in trying out other ROMs and have some questions.
1. Is there a poll at XDA that I can't find, that shows how popular certain ROMs are?
2. Is there a general opinion that one ROM is better or more stable than another? (this is my daily phone, so it needs to work reliably)
3. If I install another ROM, can I somehow keep my settings, apps and data, by restoring from a backup, or does that not work?
4. I would like to have 4x5 menu layout on the home screen, which ROM would I need to install to get that?
5. Should I just use ARHD and be patient until Jelly Bean comes out and see what happens then?

1. No polls as far as I know. There are modified stock roms, source built aosp type roms and people all have their preferences. It really comes down to what kind of functions/style/performance you want.
2. Roms built on stock HTC roms tend to have the least problems or issues because they can use original drivers etc.
3. In MOST cases you can restore apps and app data but system settings and data might interfere with roms depending which kernel etc. they have.
4. You can do this with most 3rd party launchers such as Go Launcher Ex, Nova Launcher etc. No need to flash roms to be able to edit home screen layout.
5. You could yes. But if you are thinking of flashing another custom rom anyway, why not try a few of them and see for yourself what you like most. You might be surprised Plus there are Jelly Bean roms already out there.
XDA Roms are solid and stable, i'd say read and compare each roms to suit your liking and go for it! owning a HOX is half the fun until your running one of the custom roms
If you love Customizations then definitely try ViperX ROM, full of customizations
If you want JB ROM try either CM10, AOKP or Paranoid ROM{ tablet mode feature}
or try Domination ROMwith all features of AOKP, CM10 & Paranoid.

Well first its not room, its ROM
Second
A ROM is android itself, when you install a ROM, you install a new version of android, and replace the old one, a ROM includes all parts of android
The main part is /system
That is what makes android look like android
/data is where all of the user stuff is stored
A new android installation wipes(erases all data) from both of these
A kernel is different
A kernel is a piece of software that runs underneath android and let's the operating system communicate with all the hardware that's on the phone, with out a kernel, your phone won't boot into anything
Kernels are very specific, you can't install a sense kernel with an aosp ROM, the kernels have to also be compatible with the ROM you want to run as well
Usually(in fact, its rare in the case that it doesn't happen), when you install a rom, you also install the kernel for that ROM, such as a CyanogenMod kernel and a CyanogenMod ROM, but not the other way around
If you ever want to install a custom kernel, install it AFTER you install a ROM, or else when you install the ROM, you will overwrite the custom kernel

Car analogy: Kernel = Engine, ROM = the rest of the Car,

So which one is the best ROM for my T999?

Up to your preference, I prefer CM10.x, other prefer TW-based ROMs, there is no answer to that question. Look through and pick one, you don't like it, try a different one.
And if you run into terms or other things along the way, search xda for a lousy of definitions. There's a couple of pretty good ones that you may want to bookmark for quick reference. Also read the stickies.
