How to Change/Replace kernels & their Benefits - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hey guys, pls how can I switch kernels & really what difference does changing kernels make. Pls help.

Kernel affects mostly performance and battery. Some kernels have bln support or touch to wake support, some don't.
To change kernels
Just download
Reboot into recovery
Wipe dalvik and cache
Flash kernel
Reboot.

Very important: always flash a kernel over a rom (that's been rebooted at least once)
Never flash a kernel first.

Just me, but I always just go with kernel the rom flashes now.
Two reasons.
1. Have never seen such a huge difference that its really worth flashing a different kernel. Yes, there can be some difference ...good...and sometimes bad.
2. If I have trouble, I only gotta seek answers in the dev thread of that rom. Not in rom and kernel threads.
Again....that's just my preference. But I'm not trying to push my phone to the Max either. As long as its smooth and battery is decent....I'm happy.

I highly highly doubt it would be usable, but you should post it.
Also, you should just be able to flash from kernel to kernel with a few steps.
Wipe cache (this is actually very important for flashing kernels)
Wipe dalvik cache (just in case, never hurts)
Flash Kernel
Reboot!
Sometimes, kernel devs include kernel specific files that will overwrite those of your ROM. If you start noticing funky behavior that wasn't there before it's likely that the files may conflict. At this point the best thing to do is reflash your ROM, then your desired kernel.
Hope that made sense
hmm... interesting
i do it when i flash new/different ROMs, but never though about cleaning the cache for Kernel updates
BRB, flashing kernel 1.8 again + wipe cache

My favorite right now is MIUI. I have found it to be very stable. It's an AOSP ROM, so it's already fast, and the Theming engine is top notch. I also love the fact that we see weekly updates. If there is a small hiccup one week, you can bet it will be fixed by the next. No 4G, but I don't live in a 4G area. I just use the stock kernel but there seems to be good success with both of the last two Tiamat releases. Downloads are at miui.us. Well worth a try!

I think you should be good for the most part. I've always used Amon Ra, it is extremely reliable in formatting and flashing and partitioning and all the good stuff. And it has support for both Amend and Edify scripting, while TWRP only has Edify support. Amend is older, but some people still use it.
But as long as TWRP works for you, use it by all means

Cyanogenmod and most other AOSP ROMs usually have built-in options in settings so SetCPU would be unnecessary. On MIUI and Sense ROMs, then you would need SetCPU, which I do use
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Just to add to this, to further improve battery life try to underclock it, use like the conservative governor, and also undervolt with incredicontrol (app) or vipermod (script) o_0
I have used over 10 ROMs and all had their pros and cons. The one I found had the best battery life AND performance (this is what I use now):
Rom: EVO Deck 1.3 (flashed with google apps obviously)
Kernel: SalvagedZen 2.2.1 CFS + HAVS
Extras:
CoD supersonic tweaking 1.2 (speed things up for multitasking + battery life increase)
AdFree (for no ads)
LauncherPro as my launcher
Backup apps with titanium backup. Wipe data, cache, dalvik cache, boot, and system. Flash EVO Deck, then Gapps, then kernel. Boot it up and go through the setup process, but don't sign in to anything yet. Leave it for 10 minutes then reboot. Go to market and install launcherpro, adfree, titanium backup, and the apps needed for the CoD tweaking. Do the Cod tweaking and set up adfree. Reboot for those to take effect. Now restore you're apps and you're done!

If u are concerned about battery u should be wipeing/callibrateing every time u flash, you can do this by 1. Charge completely, 2. Wipe batterystats.bin file in amon ra, and POWER PHONE OFF, DO NO REBOOT! Let it charge till the orange light turns green, 3, unplug before you turn on, 4, leave on till dies, do not plug in. 5, charge to 100%, do not unplug, done!
I suggest u do this directly after ur first successfull boot after flashing

Great news indeed! I am a complete noob when it comes to flashing kernels, or anything for that matter. I have successfully flashed this kernel on the Tmobilestock ROM. Now things do seem to be a alot smoother, not sure if it is a placebo, but what are some things that I should do to ensure I take advantage of the new kernel?
What system settings should I be aware of, or make changes to ensure maximum performance?
Is this ROM overclocked to 1.75ghz by default? Right now benchmarks are telling me its clocked at 1.566ghz.
Any tips or tricks are appreciated, thanks! :victory::laugh::victory:

Thanks for the suggestion on CPU Tuner, I will give that app a swirl.
One really weird thing that I have noticed since flashing the kernel on Tmobile stock, is that calls are not working. I cannot hear anything, trying to toggle the speaker results in severe lag that hangs for a few seconds to a minute. Any ideas? I would post directly in the development thread, but I have not met the post count to do so. If someone can move this there, then by all means.
Thanks for any help.

I did a factory reset and data wipe after having successfully upgraded to ICS. When I flashed to the Dark Side Venom kernel earlier, I wiped Dalvik cache but not the partition.

Looks like there is a Super Wipe, and a Cache Wipe. Which of the two should I use?
1. Place on ROOT of your SD card.
2. Boot into Recovery Mode
3. Do a NAND BACKUP!!!
4. Flash DARKSIDE.SUPER.WIPE
5. Stay inside recovery
6. Flash desired ROM.
7. After flashing is complete, Reboot...
8. Done!
So lemme see if I understand the instructions correctly. I should restore to my original backup. Boot into recovery and flash the wipe file. Then while still in recovery, I should flash the kernel? Am I understanding the steps correctly?

Anyone running Denomination?

Wondering if anyone is running Denomination? I am currently running Denomination myself and I guess the kernel that comes with it. Im basically wondering which kernel you guys are using with this and noticed in the gs3 resource bible that there are a few kernels for the touch wiz 4.1.1 roms. I was thinking of trying the faux kernel but not sure if I will be taking a step back or forward by doing this from the kernel that comes with Denomination. Everything seems to be working fine but want more, so is this better?

Every phone handles kernels differently. The best way to find out is to nandroid and give it a try. You could get a good idea by reading the last few pages in faux's thread to see what users are reporting.
Ok, what should I expect to see, or not see by using a different kernel? What should I look for?
Is there a special way to flash a kernel? Can I just wipe cache and wipe dalvik, flash kernel, wipe cache and dalvik again, then reboot?

Faux's kernel is the sh#t on the first and second charge cycles and it seems like after the first one or two charge cycles the battery drains really quick, you ma have different results but it's definitely worth trying.
And yes what you go to flash a kernel, wipe cache and dalvik cache, flash kernel, wipe cache and dalvik cache and then reboot your device.

[Q] reccomend me a rom.

I am currently using the MOAR rom by NOOBZ, and love it except my phone reboots about 30 times a day.
when they updated the rom i flashed the new one and still have the same problem and reading the thread so do other people.
I want a rom that has good loud audio, i've read features on a lot of roms and couldn't find any except the noobz rom that had extreme volume
listed. 1 with beats installed would be cool also.
but i've got to get a new rom it reboots in calls and at bad times.
Most likely you did something incorrect. I would wipe phone completely clean and reflash the rom.
Transmitted with a portable device using Xparent Blue Tapatalk 2
Do a complete wipe before install. If you are using another custom kernel make sure, it is not a cause for reboots.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
There is a flashable zip that will enable extra loud volume in any TW rom
MOAR is my goto rom and runs better than stock, how did you install it and with which options? If I had to guess in the dark, I'd guess your kernel voltages are too low but who knows...
If you want something different maybe try TPR or venum?
// Galaxy SIII SPH-L710 // MOAR 4.0 MD4 4.2.1 JB // KT747 ktoonservative-BFQ 384-1809Mhz + rescaling // Crossbreeder entropy + DNS + blocking // LagFix fsTRIM // Nova Prime // sent from xda premium
Not enough info to assist you, what kernel did you flash? What audio mods have you flashed? Sounds to me like you want audio so I am curious what type of mods you have flashed following the rom and what kernel settings you have.
I suggest you boot into recovery, wipe dalvik, cache, factory/data and the flash the stock or optimized stock kernel and whatever mods via the aroma installer. And DO NOT flash or install anything else for a day or two.
Phones rebooting are 99.99% kernel related, the other .01% is bad phone or just plain bad karma related.
Hope this helps, let us know.
Try a fresh download to your pc, then transfer that to your sd card. Could also be a bad download
I cannot hold on,
I will not let go
i fallowed all instructions on the rom page for install, and stock kernel and extreme volume.
i have reinstalled the rom 3 times and 1 of those was the latest updated version.
it's a problem listed in the lond thread on the rom, but low post count can't post there yet.
its probably Bad kernel install or bad download. Naddict is more than likely correct. This I have to say, I don't recall seeing anyone reporting multiple boot loops running moar. This rom is one of three of the most stable and well put together roms I have run. Good luck
