LG Optimus G Root/unlock isues - Sprint LG Optimus G

Hey fellow LG Optimus G users. Late last month I recently purchased the LGOG on Sprint and came here to seek a root guided. I didn't know that LG locks the bootloader on their devices. I came here, found root guides for 4.0.1 ZV9, 4.1.2 ZVB, AIO, Universal root and to be honest, the rooting portion was fairly simple, but its's unlocking/flashing where I have an issue.
I'm on my third phone. The first phone(unaware of it needing an unlock) I rooted and unlocked using the Universal method and tried to flash a ROM and bricked my phone. THe second time I used AIO root/unlock and my phone still messed up. Here I am once again and I really want to have my phone rooted and unlocked correctly so I can flash Paranoid Android(I like the hybrid ability it offers) but I am too skeptical about it now as I don't want to be out of a phone again. As far as Rooting goes, I feel I can just as easily use the universal method and gain root, but with unlocking, what do I have to do if the AIO way isn't correct for 4.1.2 ZVB? I'm not the best at using ADB and commands lines of the sort but if there is an alternative please help me out. Do I need a different tool? Is it availible on Google Play or is it all on PC?

Look over the guides again.
Use fiddy619 Universal root.
Download FreeGee from the Playstore to unlock.

this is exactly what u want. to add to what engine said... if you reboot after freegee and end up stuck at a black screen(quick lg logo then black).. you are softbricked.. BUT THIS IS FIXABLE. so if the "worst" was to happen.. let us know and we'll get you sorted.

Thanks alot guys, I guess I'll give it another go using this method. If the "worst" is to happen, should I just reply back here? Or PM one of you guys?

Either one of us, and either way is fine. Although autoprime is much more knowledgeable than I. (Not open to debate just in case)

Just unlocked my phone(went and bought the app to support shelnutt). Turned off the phone and then boot back up a clean boot, no error messages. I actually face palmed at how simple this turned out to be. Thanks guys :good:, glad to be apart of a helpful community. I'll play around in TWRP for a while to check its feats.
Edit: Now that my phone is rooted AND unlocked, am I able to remove the bloat apps without issue? I believe this caused my phone to have issues the first go round.

Hack and flash away til your hearts content.
Make sure you backup EFS, and make a TWRP backup and save them to your computer in case your SD gets wiped.

Phone not booting up. PL HELP !
Hello guys !
I have done something terrible and phone is not booting up part recovery now.
I had rooted the phone with one-click universal method without any hasstles and then try to reboot into bootloader by pressing VolDown+Power button.
Eventually ended up rebooting in original android recovery. I tried rebooting with option in that but it was not responding.
While trying it out, I mistakenly wiped cache partition.
Now NO MATTER WHAT COMBINATION I TRY, phone doesn't boot up past the recovery.
Please help me sort out this mess. I need to sell the phone.

I wipe my cache partition all the time. I am rooted but still locked (I don't think that will last much longer). Anyways, in the android recovery with jelly bean, I found that you no longer use the power button for selecting or confirming. It's now done using the menu button below your screen (on the right) . At least that's how it works for my phone.

Autoprime,
The "worst" is what happened to me. Can you please help me get out of this situation?

Need some details
What is your phone doing?
Can you get into recovery?
Can you get into DL mode?

When I power on the phone I get the LG logo and from there it goes straight to the "fastboot mode" screen, but I can't access the menus. I can also get the backlight screen, but when I connect it to the PC it doesn't recognize the device. I can also access "download mode" on the phone. Please forgive me if I'm not giving a lot of detail. This is my first root ever.

So you can get into fastboot? Did you unlock also? If so, press volume down twice then power. That should get you into recovery.

what engine95 said. Worst case, LGNPST back to stock, and try again. there is a modified ZVB bin floating around that makes you unlocked, and once you boot into recovery, will root you. its the easiest root/unlock ive ever seen. good luck!
remember, the IRC channel is FULL of great help.

i just followed the steps and now im on lg screen computer not reading the phone and cant get in to fastboot or recovery?

Did you use Fiddy69 root method followed by installing FreeGee from the Play Store? If not you can try LGNPST to stock. Or just take it back for an exchange

ive had 4 softbricks today from trying various things...one involved 20 mins of panicked button pushing. keep both volume buttons held down and press the power button for long periods of time then waiting a min or so to see if it comes up to download. Hopefully you will eventually time it right and see the blessed download screen...from there get teenybin's bin file for whatever version you have and use that...its a godsend

Yet another jb guide.

1. you have to be rooted and on STOCK ZV9. the easiest way in my option is to lgnpst. here is a guide http://pastebin.com/g8hXBaaA
use this v9 tot file instead of the v7 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2091883&highlight=tot
2. you need to root v9 with this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050582
3. you need to download the update zip and rename it update.zip. http://d-h.st/0a9
4. you need to move update.zip to /cache using a file explorer (this is why you need root)
5. reboot into stock recovery. get into stock recovery by holding vol down+ home button+ power button until captive lights flash then release.
for some people programs such as romtoolbox's rebooter works and for others it doesnt but you can try.
6. choose "apply update from cache." then "update.zip"
7. you are now running JB.
8. restore root by using root keeper
9. if you want to reroot use the same method for zv9 above
Congrats, you have rooted jellybean!

so i made an actual guide because i did this in the car since kc removed his at the time.
here is the updated version which shouldn't cause a brick except for a few that make a mistake here or there.
Noob Question about this guide
First of all, thank you all for what you do for the Android community
I am obviously a noob, so please bear with me.
I recently used engine95's guide to root and unlock my Sprint LG Optimus G. It was simple and worked perfectly. I have not yet had a chance to attempt flashing any rom's and just noticed that I can actually have Jelly Bean now. So, I am rooted and unlocked. I have recently downloaded Titanium Backup, FreeGee, ROM Manager, Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper, and ES File Explorer. I chose TWRP during the unlock procedure with FreeGee. I am now running Titanium Backup on everything (seems to be stuck at 96% with YouTube).
I am about to run through javskies guide to flashing JB (this guide just made more sense to me). I am hoping Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper will keep me from having to root again after the update, but if not, I think I can handle rooting again.
My main questions are:
1) I noticed something in another post about uninstalling FreeGee due to its current incompatibility with JB. Is this correct?
2) Looking at step 4 of javskies guide
4. you need to move update.zip to /cache using a file explorer (this is why you need root)
Click to collapse
, I noticed that I do not see a file named 'cache' either when using ES File Explorer or Windows Explorer. (I haven't figured out how to paste a screenshot into a post, so I attached a JPEG screenshot.)
3) Because I did not see the /cache folder, I looked at the Flashing Guide and now I am even more confused because the steps for
ROM update without SDcard

seem a bit out of my leauge...or maybe I am being lazy.
4) How would you all handle a wife/significant other who wants to kill me for spending hours on end reading through posts?
Honestly, if I can grasp how to manage the .zip file correctly in this procedure, I am sure I will be fine.
Because I know it matters...quick thanks to javskies, engine95, fiddy619, and kc_exactly for (unknowingly) getting me this far. Also to _Epic, who apparently is losing his patience with Android illiterates, like myself
Good grief, I hope this post ends up looking right...it is my very first time posting...(just noticed the 'preview' button.)
Thanks guys!
Cache is a folder in the root directory. That is the very bottom of directories. If your rooted you will see it. Put the file there.
And freegee is not compatible for the jelly bean update. So, you are correct to remove it. It will cause a soft brick.
The app is safe just sitting there. But if you run it after the update you will have problems. So, I would remove it for now. Out of sight, out of mind.
Part of the steps to fix the soft brick will be too format the whole phone. So, remove it. The creator of the app is a very active member here on xda. He is working on a fix. Just check back on xda. We will all know when it is fixed.
And it doesn't bother me what guide you use. If you read the bottom of my guide it is basically the same as this one.
I am not a hater. I like to help everyone. There is no competition.
The update process is confusing for new people. There is no way around it. Just follow the steps and you will be fine.

As for the wife. Just say what we all do.
"Honey, I am sorry, I have to fix my phone."
Or
"Hey, one sec, I have to fix my phone"
Basically, any combination of something like that usually works.

Also just a heads up, after u download esfile explorer, u need to go to settings and way towards the bottom there r root settings. Make sure u have the appropriate options checked so u can back out of your sdcard folder. Super user will ask u to grant permission once u check the first option. Grant it. That way u can get to that cache folder that you need.

Actually, shelnutt had a way but he said there was also a risk of bricking my phone. I told him I couldnt because I dont have insurance nor do I have a backup phone. I will do it his way within time once I can get a backup phone. Hopefully, within two months.
He also said there were many people in the same situation that can't unlock phone. He's also trying to find the problem and work out a solution in the future.

Unlocked Bootloader for 10.3

Will there eventually be an app for unlocking the bootloader on the 10.3 firmware? I don't have the factory cable and it sounds like a lot of people have bricked their device doing the downgrade to 10.2.
I hope so. I am not gonna even try it... Lol instead rooted it and used Kindlefree app to install Nova and used titanium backup. So it's "like" Android but not quite lol....

But if I downgrade my bootloader I won't have to use the whole 2nd bootloader method and all that right? Won't I then just be able to use some utility to flash TWRP and then flash a ROM? This Kindle thing is probably a little more intimidating than anything else I've messed with. I have mine rooted and a bunch of other hacks but I want pure Android on. I don't want a brick though..

What about all that craziness I have been reading about locking up the bootloader due to the 10.3.1 bootloader? I can just forget about that and install that apk file and THEN I would be able to flash a ROM via TWRP? I thought that the thread said that this tool said it was for the old bootloader. So, it looks like I have screwed something up. This figures as my luck is terrible with this freegin Kindle. So I got TWRP recovery working fine. I DL Cyanogenmod 10.1 and Gapps accordingly. Went into TWRP of course made a backup, then went to flash. I wiped EVERYTHING and went to flash the ROM. I received the error <Could Not Open .zip> So now I have nothing on file except a bad .zip. I did re-download the ROM assuming it was bad and restored my TWRP backup. Now I am stuck in what appears to be a Kindle Bootloop. The Kindle Fire (Orange) logo comes up, a few seconds later it blinks back off again and recycles. Now what? I can't get the Kindle to boot so I can put the .zip back on the machine. I am STUCK. I did the exact same thing when i got my kindle back in January. (Yeah, i had to order my cable right after that )
For some reason I've never been able to restore a stock TWRP backup on the kf2. It always borks the bootloader.
I know there is a special requirement that our bootloader uses a file called stack on the system partition- that's why you can't get into recovery now (when you wiped the system it wiped the stack file which let's us run the second bootloader.)
Anyway, Once you have the fastboot cable its really easy to get things going again. Pm me if you need a hand.. I've been through this myself a few times lol.
If you ever end up in the same situation again where you wiped the system and the zip is bad... Stay in twrp and use "adb sideload" to push a good zip from pc.

[Q] Help me!!!!

Ok unfortunately I decided to root my LG and obviously thats was my first mistake. I was reading xda about how to root my LG Optimus G. Well i found a thread that talked me through it but I decided to take the short and download freegee from the playstore. And needless to say in the middle of it backing up someone decided they felt the need to call me. I didnt answer the call but it went back to downloading the recovery. When it finished it said it couldnt find the files. Long story short my phone worked for 2 days before it decided that it was gonna be deactivated and i no longer use my phone unless its on wifi. I talked to sprint the tech told that basically everything is gone and the biggest part thats missing is the radio and if i could recovery that or flash a new one then I have buy a new phone. Can anyone please please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :crying:

It sounds like you still have stock recovery. You'll need to use LGNPST. All the info and links are here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43983721

Agreed just lgnpst and start back from beginning ....I think u may have corrupted ya efs ... If ya phone only works on WiFi try to re activate it .... If it fails to activate then u will most likely need to visit the efs repair /recover thread....

2. according lgnpst thread no fastboot try with alt bin. teenybin ls970 (alt bin)
3. at 67% phone attempted to turn on and a google logo appeared the shut down. about 85% a window opened and said the phone must have disconnected or became unplugged. then the instructed window closed . now a batt charging logo appears but not the same image as the original.

Choose Dload Mode/Reboot/Fastboot

Power: Fastboot
If I choose Dload Mode pls do following
1 . Dload Mode. Pls connect USB
2. Get tha ram dump image using QCT's memory debug app
3. Send email to contact point or [email protected]
Which bin file did you use? Zv9? Or ZVB? The demigod thing is nothing. Just reboot. If you can get into recovery, do a factory reset. You might lose everything tho.

I think it was the Zv9 bin file. I just tried pressing the vol. down to reboot but instead it decided that vol. up was pressed and it jumped to Dload Mode. How do i get out of it or stop it.

Press and hold the power button for 20+sec. Next press vol down+power until the capacitive lights come on then release them. That should bring up stock recovery. Do a factory reset. You'll use the capacitive menu key to select.

Go to recovery. Still do the factory reset. Are you sure you used zv9? If that doesn't work, in the teeny bin thread download the original one. If you can also put a ROM on your SD and flash it.

OK. Let's start from scratch. Shall we?
Go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43983721
Install LGNPST and download either ZV9 or ZVB bin. And run it.
This should get you up and running. It includes the modem also.
Edit. Zvb is the most current. But we can make either bin work.

[GUIDE] The easiest way to install CWM in ICS (no unbricking needed)

NOW YOU CAN INSTALL CWM DIRECTLY FROM ICS
INSTALL AN UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER WITHOUT UNBRICKING
A few months ago I found this thread on XDA :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=42657066
This thread provided a way to install CWM from Jellybean V30C for the SU640 without unbricking the phone first. Now not exactly the same, the phones are close enough that it peaked my interest. Digging into it I discovered that the partition mmcblk0p7 contains the bootloader, and it was as simple as pushing the unlocked bootloader from Gingerbread to the correct partition, therefore bypassing the entire need to unbrick the phone first and thus allowing the install of CWM.
So I got brave enough and installed the P936 v10i Gingerbread ROM and used the command in ADB shell to extract the bootloader:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p7 of=/sdcard/bootloader.img. After this I restored my phone completely to stock. Rooted using the root at the above link, then ran my batch file and I had CWM no Security Error!!
The steps are simple:
Start with stock ICS (any version, carrier or phone version p93x). v20c, v20d, v20e, or v20f.
1. ROOT PHONE with the root from the above link or any method that works for you.
2. Run my batch file.
3. Install a custom ROM.
Before anyone asks me I used v 6.0.1.5 TOUCH for CWM. There are actually several reasons why. For me v 6.0.4.5 was incompatible with any ROM with kernel version 3.4. Also if I would initiate a backup from the Rom Manager app, CWM couldn't locate the backup directory.
ENJOY
:victory:
First this only is recommended for LG's Nitro HD models P930, P935 & P936. I do not recommend installing on the SU640 or LU6200.
Thnks!
Worked like a charm! (the second time lol)
I've been waiting for an easy workaround like this, you're great!
Awesome work.
Where did you get CWM 6.0.1.4? Is it the recovery.img located in the zip in the OP? I have two P930s and both have 6.0.4.5 installed. On one, I can get into recovery without a problem, the other one can't.
Thanks

May have something to do where it is stored on your C drive. Try copying the folder to the root directory on your C drive and running the batch file with administrator permissions.

I never managed to get into recovery with the phone off. If I long press volume down with power button I get the message if I want to permanently erase everything (factory reset) and if I long press volume up with power I get into download mode.
(using lg nitro hd, cm 10.2.1, unbricked and rooted using hereric's guide, and I have latest cwm installed)

That is exactly the message that you want. Press power button twice and you will be in CWM. It says factory reset because that is what will happen if you didn't have a custom recovery installed, no worries though.

I do not remember which technique I used to root my phone, but it is rooted and currently running sphinx. Can I just flash the bootloader on my phone as is ? or do I need to revert to stock first ?

Yes you can flash directly, since it only flashes the boot loader and recovery it will not touch your ROM.

[Q] A method to go back to stock everything without a pc

For some reason the top half of my phone's screen won't response to touch. If anyone has a way of fixing it, I will appreciate it. If not I'm gonna take it to sprint, but I need to make the phone completely stock again. I don't have a pc tho.

You could boot into recovery and install cwm recovery if your recovery is unlocked. Just use the volume and power keys. Then install ZVC Stock rooted and use FreeGee to relock it.

That is probably because you changed something. If you remove any system apps or make any changes to the system and re-lock it will soft brick. It has to be untainted for the relock to work. That's why you're supposed to make a backup before making any changes and then restore the backup before re-locking the BL.
