Self made smart dock for galaxy s3 - Galaxy S III Accessories

Hi guys. this is an update of my previous post. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2142357
Before, I made the connector to work as smart dock.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFzX6NlKJBU&feature=youtu.be
And now I tried to make it little more compact, avoid extra connections, make it easy to use. View attachment 1882279
I wanted only one cable will come from the phone and to do so i needed 1 cable that contains 8 wires, but I couldnt find any round cable that has 8 wires in it. at last i cut my hdmi cable !! :cyclops:

there were about 13 or more wires in it, so i cut little part from the cable. You can order a cheap hdmi cable and cut it if you want.
(( After cutting the part I joint it bk and put some glue so the wires stay separate from each other. Then I covered it with some tape and more glue outsideof the cable
now hdmi cable is working fine too :silly: ))((skip if you dnt want to reuse the hdmi cable))
Now comes the hard part. I soldered 8 wires as shown in the diagram, and made a hole on the 5 pin to 11 pin tip, and placed the cable as in picture and closed it .after that its pretty easy. Just connect wires with a micro usb cable as shown in diagram. I connected the usb hub instead of usb female port in the diagram. And the usb hub had enough space inside to put all the joints in .I just had to make another hole in usb hub to take out the micro usb for mhl cable
So total cost of making this dock was around 20 to 25 $ ( including mhl adapter and usb hub)

I'm just trying to keep these steps clear in my mind...is the above step just so you can reuse the HDMI cable you had cut the section out of? It has nothing to do with the actual dock, right?

Yeah. You are right. I just did that so I can reduce extra cables. You can skip that part if extra cables dont bother you
If you dnt want to reuse the cable. ... just through it or keep it to use in something else

very nice... thanks for the DIY :good:

Great Job
You built a cool little adapter for yourself, I'm looking into doing something like this but I need help because I want to add charging on top of everything else you can do with the dock you made.
Have you looked into charging at all? or tried it yourself?

Micro USB to iPod 30pin connector

Who all would possibly be interested in something like this?
I'll be looking into making one, and I'm posting this here so that others could give it a try as well.
I, as possibly many who've gotten off the iOS bandwagon probably have some Apple-related audio accessories which rely on the infamous dock connector.
Because of Sammy's lovely implementation of 'docking' modes, using an adapter of sorts it's possible to both charge the phone and send audio through USB!
Basic idea:
The iPod's dock connector pinout is as follows: 5 and 6 are R/L audio in, 1, 2, and various others are grounded, and pin 23 is +5V.
The orginal Desktop Dock use data +/- as the audio line. But you need to jump pin 4 with a 365K resitor to activate this mode.
PIN:
1 : VCC
2 : D-: AUDIO LINE OUT L/R
3 : D+: AUDIO LINE OUT R/L
4 : SENSE ( CONNECT WITH SMALL 365K TO GND )
5 : GND

That snippet was gotten from: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249775
Connect the corresponding wires, and it should in theory, allow us to use one connector to output audio to any of the docks. Obviously there's no way to control media playback via the dock itself, but I figure this beats using the line-in that some docks do have.
I'll be looking into whipping up an adapter for such a thing, and felt like sharing the idea to those who might be able to do so before I can or would like to try themselves etc.
However, has anyone else considered something like this? I'm speaking specifically about taking advantage of the GS2's docking mode, as a similar adapter was made with an audio input cord. Comments or thoughts?
I didn't feel this was something to be posted in either Q&A or Accessories, however if I was wrong in doing so please by all means mods move it to where it belongs.
Sounds like a good idea. Make a video showing us the results.
Cheers
i guess the first attempt would be to take an iphone-usb cable, microusb cable and the resistor
remove the plastics, wire accordingly, test and in case of success solder
parts of the procedure are the same as they are for makeing a jig
If something like this could be made and made to look "clean" that would be AWESOME!!!
I just made one with jack end, it is working, thanks for the pinout !
Will try to report about SQ later.

uh, in a electronic components shop?
Honestly, find yourself a local shop with electronics, and buy any resistor between 355k and 375k, it should work just fine. The smaller the better, 0,125W will do just fine.
Ah i thought it had to be exactly 365 . and only have a very small crappy electronics store were I live.
Will this do

TBH, I'd go to the crappy small store. Do you really need 100/1000 of those resistors?
The ones from eBay are 0,25W. Those could be to big to fit in the plug. If you're positive you don't want to find a local seller, try these, but those are 1000pcs :
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-6-Watt-360K-ohm-5-Through-Hole-Carbon-Film-Resistors-/200655439530
Another thing to consider. Look at the delivery times on eBay.
I did it with a 0.25W resistor (from the ebay 100 pack), it fit the plug.

Would tis work? nettop

Well I didn't want to explain this all so made this huge picture but it's pretty much what i want to do. Does anyone know if this will work or if there is an easier way of doing this.

It would have to be a powered USB hub. Besides that, it could work. Although, you're not likely to get much computing power out of it... meaning not much word processing or any heavy tasks, really. I'd guess that HD video would probably be out of the question. IMO you'd be better off getting a low end netbook.
Thanks! Yeah just looking to be able to go home and be able to write text with a keyboard and watch youtube videos and such. Maybe even build a docking station with a wooden box or something to hold all the wires. My biggest dilemma is the HDMI cable going through the USB hub.

Yeah, you might sacrifice a bit of resolution like that. I'm not sure you can carry 1080p through USB.
But for the basics, email, surfing, texting and youtube...I think it'd work
on the side of that mhl adaptor it looks like there is a micro usb port and a search on ebay had similar, so plug the mhl directly into the phone and then hdmi to tv/monitor and the micro usb on the side of the mhl to the usb hub.
if the above is not the case then
i would elimnate that gender adaptor coming from the hub out to the female usb to female micro usb, just get a male usb to female micro usb.
the last time i check usb hosting was not supported? pls tell me im wrong tho

Are you sure the device supports simultaneous multiple BT connections?
Also, there are more comfortable BT keyboards out there. I've got the HP, it's got the same spacing/layout as my 15" laptop.
I have simultaneous connections to my Moto S9 headset (music playing), keyboard and mouse. No problems. The music skips once when you connect another device but then everything works perfect.
A bigger keyboard would be nice but this one was cheap.
The mouse is great with android. Right mouse button goes back. Middle mouse is menu. Scroll wheel works great.

Excellent. I didn't mean to sound accusative, I just wasn't sure the multiple device support was there.
Then yeah, @the OP, I'd definitely use BT, too!!
The HP kb rocks, and I got mine (an open box display) for around $20.
This is what I want to do as well. Has anyone been able to get host mode to work with external storage on a non-ICS ROM?

Keychain USB sync cable

I am wondering if anyone has experience with these charger and sync cables that are small enough to carry on your keychain. I found a few different ones online, but I'm not sure how they perform in syncing data and wear/tear from being attached with keys. I want this cable on my everyday carry so I can use the external microsd card on my phone as a UMS for videos and music, instead of a usb thumb drive.
I can't post any outside links but the kinds of strap/keychain cables I'm currently looking at is from DracoDesignUSA, Scosche, and OrientEX
I have zero experience with these..sorry but I am in the market for one too. I was thinking something rigid without cables.
I found more of them here..flip through a few pages: http://www.alibaba.com/trade/search?SearchText=micro+usb+keychain&IndexArea=product_en&fsb=y
Those look good, but I'm worried about their syncing abilities. I have some cables that can only charge my device and do not sync when connected to a computer or media player.
I decided to buy the iGo Keyjuice charger for micro and mini usb http://www.amazon.com/iGo-PS00291-0001-KeyJuice-Charger-Micro/dp/B004NEULF8 for $7.88 with free Amazon Prime shipping, which I got the next day. I keep this on a detachable clip with my keys, so it's pretty nice having a usb cable whenever I go out with my phone. Perfect for my everyday carry.
Review: This cable is exactly what I was looking for and I did a lot of research in other portable cables and straps. The iGo keyjuice can charge my phone and sync data with no problems.

The micro and mini usb adapter folds in easily and snaps together to keep the whole thing secure.
The micro usb cable is about 2.5 inches long, a little short but works well.
View attachment 1315242
I was worried it was going to be hard for me to take the pieces apart, as some reviews stated, but I'm not experiencing any problems with taking the pieces apart and putting them back together. The only negative I have is the way the usb adapter is L-shaped, making it capable of blocking other ports on my laptop or not fitting because other things are in the way.
I haven't tested transfer speeds or charging times with this cable yet, but this thing is great so far.

Car Dock = Desktop Dock

Has anyone thought of using the official car dock as a desktop dock? All you would need to do is plug the usb cable coming out of the dock into a computer or wall charger instead of a car charger and disable Car Mode (apk)!!
It is so elegant and beautiful. I would love to do this.

Yeah I actually just checked out that exact video... So it's kind of both... I'm pretty sure I'm getting it now. Time will tell what that much sliding along the plastic will do to the phone. I'm hoping nothing...
I've posted this one in a car mount thread, and it can also be used as a desk mount:
http://www.arkon.com/mobile-grip/mobile-grip-dashboard-mount-mg178.html
I am using it as a dock on my desk. Beware though; the car cable wont sent data trough so only charging is possible.
Dont ask why. They changed some wires on the cable for some reason.
^ damn that sucks.. i already ordered my second d160 to use as a desktop dock. i was hoping the usb cable would double as a data cable for the PC.

It does indeed. It is beautiful to use as a dock. Maybe you could fabric something yourself. You can also just flip it so that the micro-usb is on top and you can put a normal cable in there.
Ive thought of using the official htc car dock on for home use cause the phone easily slides in but dont really want to be paying £40+ for it .
Best place to get the OEM mount?
Yeah going to use my car dock on my desk.. My desk is glass, so perfect :good:

Hi
I have all the external cables I need for the job.
It's the internal Hdmi and micro usb cable that connects to the main board and then has the cable to the two micro plugs you find at the back of the Atrix lapdock.
Thanks
Any success?

Sorry for reviving old threads .. I'm in a similar jar .. I've broke mine ! Having the cable on/off .. moving it all over the place .. acted live a "lever" and it seems it broke !

I know... Old thread... But just throwing this in here as a reference!
I converted my lapdock to contain both an hdmi and micro usb port.
This is reallllllly time consuming as you are dealing with small wires- not to mention 20 of them. Look up a pinouts for both a micro-hdmi male, and full-hdmi female. Match them up. Draw it out. (I made the mistake of reversing the wires. Male-to-Female wiring can be confusing)
Pictures of the product show its a bit ugly... but it all works. As a display and with the keyboard/trackpad combo. I have more pictures of the final product.. but I'd have to look for them.

None that I have noticed with the keyboard. If anything, there were times where the trackpad would stop working.
Could you just make a picture of the wiring ?

its good to hear someone still using the old atrix, i still got mine though but i have broken micro hdmi port on the phone part. my lapdock is still good i guess theres nothing j could try on, rpi still cost a huge amount in our country, cable conversions were also hard to find (micro hdmi female to hdmi)
I have the lapdock and the audio dock. I want to connect my sony xperia z1 with the screen broken in it and use. I opened the back and left the cables out of the lapdock. I also opened the desk dock and left the exposed cables to make it easier to connect the Z1. When I plugged the Z1 into the desk dock it charged the normal beter, but the OTG function did not work. Well I would connect the HDMI to the USB input of the desktop dock to pass the Z1 pro lapdock image. Does anyone know why USB port did not work as OTG?
