What's the difference.... - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Other than the Kernel, what is it that separates the Sprint S3 from the Verizon S3 from the US Cellular S3, etc.....

The frequencies to which the radios are tuned -- mostly the LTE radio and probably the EVDO radio. Plus, the Verizon S3 has a SIM slot (not sure about the US Cellular version) because of their deal for the AWS spectrum. Oh, and the Verizon S3 has a wireless charger available that's incompatible with the Sprint S3 because the Verizon one has extra connectors under the battery.
Putting the ILLA in KILLA since 1985

Yeah, also the vendor files are different (/system/vendor)

Ahh, yeah, the vendor files make sense and yeah., USCC has a SIM card in it, too

Sprint has a sim card in also, but it's non removable

So, my next question, if you are going to build a ROM, and you take out the radios, and the carrier's specific vendor files, (OK, this is a stretch but you'd have to have an available kernel for each carrier to add to the ROM prior to flashing and if the S3 is anything like the moment, it's a simple as replacing the zImage in the zip file with the kernel you want) would the ROM flash and would it work?? Could you creat an update zip for the carrier specific vendor files. Do the radios NEED to be part of the ROM zip?? Can you create a ROM without the radios, etc??
You see where I'm going with this?

No the radios dont necessarily have to be part of a rom. But at boot, the kernel initializes all of those services so it may or may not give errors and may or may not prevent it from booting up completely
But are you trying to create a multicarrier rom? I'd suggest looking at the ones that already exist. The general method to do it is exactly where you're going with this, the devs use aroma installer and install the carrier-specific files (vendor files, etc) based on the selection the user makes for their carrier

Sprint defaults to some different build props and other options like mandatory camera sound, MMS deactivated options like group send to a lot of recipients, etc. All of those are modifiable if rooted of course.
My Galaxy SIII setup and tweaks:

Sprint Galaxy S3 SPH-L710 // MOAR 2.4 + MC3 + buildprops // KT747 ktoonservative-DEADLINE 384-1728Mhz + TK Mod + scaling tweaks // Crossbreeder entropy + DNS + blocking // Lagfix fsTRIM // TWRP // Nova Prime // sent from xda premium // ATMIRL on Miniclip 8 Ball Pool ** Come at me bro! [/spoil]

Ahh, very cool .I haven't seen Aroma since Mazda and Jaime were using it on their ROMS last year. Yeah, that's the ticket right there. Pick the carrier, get the right kernel and carrier specific files plus any other options you'd want!

Several of the most popular roms here on the S3 use aroma installer. TPR and MOAR for examples.

30/Jun r1 (JFB) - MoDaCo Custom ROM for Samsung Galaxy S with Online Kitchen

I'm pleased to present my MoDaCo Custom ROM for the Samsung Galaxy S! READ THIS WHOLE POST BEFORE YOU START! No, really, it contains everything you need to know. wink.gif
This ROM is the 'starting point' for my Galaxy S custom ROMs.
About MoDaCo Custom ROMs
MoDaCo Custom ROMs are based on official ROMs - either shipping or leaked. A MCR release is designed to feel as far as possible like a stock ROM, with optimisations, tweaks and complimentary additions that enhance the user experience. The aim of a MCR is to be ultra reliable for use on an everyday device.
Requirements
In order to use this ROM on your device, YOU MUST ALREADY BE RUNNING THE JFB ROM FROM HERE. Do NOT use this ROM with any other base, unpredictable things will happen, the most likely being you'll have to reflash your device via Odin.
Features Included
* Based on the JFB release
* Rooted with Superuser 2.1 by ChainsDD
* Built with the MCR build process which reduces the size and boosts the speed of the ROM
* busybox with Droid Explorer support
* Updated Google Maps
* MCR version displayed in 'About' screen
* Optional Google Voice Search
* Optional Google Voice Dialer
* Optional Fancy Widget
* Optional Beebplayer
* Optional baked in Wavesecure via the online kitchen (installed to system partition for maximum security)
Changelog
Please see 2 posts below this one for the changes in each release.
Installation
To install this ROM:
* Ensure you have the JFB ROM installed (linked above)
* Download the zip file of your choice from the links below (or the online kitchen) and copy to your SD card named 'update.zip'
* Restart your device in recovery mode by running 'adb reboot recovery' (download adb if you do not have it already, use adb-windows, adb-mac or adb-linux as appropriate)
* Select the option to apply an update zip, and select the zip file you copied to your memory card
Upgrading
No wipe is explicitly required in order to use this ROM, however if you do encounter issues of any kind, it is recommended that you wipe your device and reproduce the issue before raising it here.
Downloads
This ROM is currently only available in the online kitchen - prebakes to follow.
Thanks
It's impossible to mention everyone who contributes to the Android community by name, but to everyone out there who does great work and shares it with us all - you have my gratitude and respect.
And finally...
If you would like to show your appreciation for the ROM, please consider supporting MoDaCo by signing up for a MoDaCo Ad Free or MoDaCo Plus account, both of which also give you early access to Beta ROM releases and access to the the online kitchens.
Enjoy!

Does this ROM fix the ram issue so that all 512MB of ram is utilized?
Congrats on being the first custom rom here.
Congratulations! I don't have a phone yet but I am very pleased to see a custom rom already!
woohoo custom ROMs already. Guess I'll be getting myself the phone after all.
umm.. but in another thread people where saying that it wasn't gonna be possible because samsung encrypt their drivers etc. so this mean they did release they drivers? and there is gonna be alot of custom rooms for galaxy gravity?

No I said it would be near impossible to get roms from other sources like Sense roms or Froyo on because of the driver issue. I never said you would never see custom roms. The only roms you are going to see are one's based off of Samsungs release.
Hold on, hold on. So even though Samsung released the Galaxy S' driver source code to the public, it's going to be "near impossible" to port Sense and FroYo to the phone? I may be ignorant but I'll just ask with ignorance, how do you figure?

Download the source code..... ok now open it and go to GalaxyS_Kernel.tar.gz. Now in there just enter the first folder then go to modules. Go to Dpram. Open up any of those files in notepad. You should see written non-compiled code right? That is fine now go back to the module folders and go to S3cbc. Now open up s3cbc_module.o. Does that look like non-compiled code? No it doesn't. It's either already compiled or encrypted. That's what I mean

Quick question, does that mean any custom rom that is release will be based off the official rom they release which has Touchwiz backed in? If so, does that rule out a plain vanilla android rom for this device? Thanks for your help and appreciate the knowledge.

No it doesn't rule out plain vanilla android rom. Yes they will all be based on Samsung but rom makers can take out all the touchwiz garbage and throw in another launcher like adw or Launcherpro.
That's what I wanted to hear. Thanks for the help. Now if I only could decide if I should keep the Nexus One or purchase this phone..... Decisions, Decisions.

So they can easily be decompiled? If it's source code why is it already compiled?
dont go too deep into specific things that we may not even need (we are not coders here) but the source code for basic hardware that we need to get things going are already there.. things like camera, wlan, etc. btw, do u know what s3cbc is for?

What about s3clcd? Here is a little copy and paste of some of the garble that was in the compiled file
screen width=%d height=%d va=0x%x pa=0x%x
I would go out on a limb and say those are video drivers. The one's that have been encrypted on all other samsung phones.
Also in s3cbc there is some code at the bottom
PVRSRV_PIXEL_FORMAT_YUY2 PVRSRV_ERROR_FIFO_SPACE char ui32ByteStride psDevInfo PVRSRV_PIXEL_FORMAT_PAL1 PVRSRV_PIXEL_FORMAT_PAL2 pfnOpenBCDevic
If you don't know the Galaxy's gpu is PowerVR SGX540 and YUY2 is a colol format for video screens
http://www.fourcc.org/yuv.php#YUY2 and Pal is of course a European video standard.
they are not encrypted, they are object codes in machine language for arm.. and why we need that again for custom roms?
Wanted to test modaco ROM but they are not free.. Any kind souls upload and share ?

How much free ram have you got? Considering flashing and rooting, but not sure if it's worth it right now. Meh 10£ isn't that much think I'm gonna give it a try.
EDIT: Just flashed, but now I don't have root access(says access denied when I try to access the /data/data folder). Thought this included the rooted PDA file or do I have to flash that again with odin?
EDIT2: Scratch that I forgot to press the allow-button on my phone after sending the Super-user request..

[ROM] AT&T Stock Properly De-Odexed LG1 OTA System...

This is mostly for new devs that want a stock build to work with, or just want to use the latest files & firmware version with their unlocked & rooted device.
All of the stock files are in this rom. The only changes made are busybox, SuperSU (Faster responses than traditional SU in my humble opinion), & I tore a lot of the apks down to java & applied diffpatches from the OTA update to all applicable apk & jar files, De-Odexed 100% & zip aligned. This currently includes the stock rooted kernel & will also work with the kernel by NunHugger (which supports init.d & custom boot images). You can easily change kernels with WinRAR or WinZip by making certain that "no compression" is selected & then drag & drop new boot.img to the root of the zip.
Also in the rom are the newer camera binaries & the other fixes from the AT&T LG1 OTA.
I did change the GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk so that on-device searches are still possible.
Rom include latest SuperSU & a working busybox 1.20.2 build.
Other than that, this is a fully bloated & stock AT&T rom & contains the stock rooted kernel. If you would like init.d support or anything else added, just let me know. I don't believe in init.d, & personally believe in editing xml's or boot init files to accomplish init tasks, but I'll add if desired. I am working on modding the LG1 kernel to have UV/OC function, but other than that, not much else.
This will
I am working on applying the diff patch to the kernel source, so that the kernel will match the LG1 system. However, I am having trouble with occasional bootloops when battery is under 30%. Could be the source, but most likely it is the fact that I haven't played with 100% stock source much, let alone Samsung source.
At any rate, do what you will with this. It is there to do with as you like, or not...

So can you flash a different kernel like ktoonez just using cwm?
Yessiree.
Any kernel in the AT&T section I have tried so far has worked fine.
And if anyone wants, I can remove the debugging crap from all of the jars & apks to trim the files down further.
So the modem didnt change? Mine is still the same just curious
Edit: my bad forgot its just ota and just patches on the side note why no just make flashable zip of the removed apk if ever you debloat the rom

It is really meant to be a base for other's that wish to begin learning to cook. That way there is a base rom that is 100% stock for them to add to or deduct from as they choose. However, if you wish, I can do a de-bloated version. I have a new version as well, that still has bloat, but most of the frequently updated apps are in data/app & named so they are properly handled by updates.
Is there any consensus as to what is "Debloated" besides removing the AT&T crude? I usually remove gmail, I don't need two email clients, Flipboard, is gone, awww heck, I'll just do whatever & if ya'all want something back I'm sure I'll hear it.

Great! What Android versions can be ran on this phone?
JellyBean - 4.2.2 - TouchWiz ROMs are 4.2.2 and there's a few CM10.1 ROMs out there still.
JellyBean - 4.3- CM10.2 ROMs are rolling out but remember, you may encounter bugs as it is still a WIP (Pretty stable, though.)

Cool, but I'm a noob, what should I start off with?
My suggestion to you is for you to run some TouchWiz ROMs to get you comfortable with the flashing, nandroiding, tweaking processes and then move on to something else. Above all read and search.

Okay, I see.. but I don't quite understand what flashing, nandroiding, tweaking, etc. mean?
* - anything and everything possible. A good example would be "All my friends live at 10* Croxley Street." This is saying that they are all live at 100, 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108 and 109.
Dev - See developer.
Developer - A man or woman who has created (developed) software.
ROM - 1. A modified version of the Android operating system operating system. 2. Read Only Memory, a place where information is stored and can not be destroyed, modified or written to.
AOSP - "Android open source project" a project by Google Inc. to give android to developers and manufactures for free (see open-source)
Open-source - (not to be confussed with free) A peice of software that is free to edit, use, distribute and share with no charge.
CM - See cyanogenmod
Cyanogenmod - A free open-source project based on the AOSP. It is a modded (see modded) version of the Android firmware
Firmware - see ROM (1)
Stock - An unchanged version of something. Example: I just flashed stock sense
OTA - "Over the air" a term used to indicate software that was sent to phones directly through the internet to their phones.
FOTA - "Firmware over the air" this normally refers to ROM's but can refer to radio firmware (see OTA)
Firmware - a piece of software to make hardware function correctly. This can refer to Radio Firmware, but is normally used as another name for ROM (1)
Radio - (not to be confused with Radio Firmware) A piece of hardware that allows communication. There are 3 main radios in your phone. Bluetooth, WiFi and GSM/CDMA.
Radio Firmware - (see firmware) a type of software that allows correct communication with the radio and the operating system. A newer firmware would normally improve battery life and call quality. The radio firmware only applies to the CDMA/GSM radio.
CDMA/GSM - A type of network communication between phones and carriers. GSM phones normally are included with SIM Cards that authorize them onto the network. CDMA have this authorization built in and do not need a sim card.
Kernel - An important part of all operating systems that handles the CPU and other vital components. A modded kernel may be used for overclocking.
Overclock - (not to be confused with underclock) to exced the default maximum CPU speed. This could make a phone more powerful but may cause damage. Although no damaged has been reported so far it could still drain battery life.
Underclock - to change your phones maximum frequency to LOWER than the default to attempt to extend the phones lifespan and battery.
Mod - A modification to a part of the phones software. It is also POSSIBLE to mod the phones hardware but is not recommended.
Modding - To perform a mod
Modded - to have included mods
Modification - see mod
Governor - a system embedded into the kernel to automatically change the current working CPU frequency depending on the workload. It would only go up to what it is overclocked (or underclocked) to, this is called the maximum frequency. It would not drop bellow the (just as eaisly configurable) minimum frequency.
Library's/Libs - a set of instructions for applications to use to function. A functioning camera lib would allow the camera to be used.
WFS - "Wildfire S" an armv6 device made by HTC in 2011.
Logcat - A logging system built into the ADB
ADB - "Android Debug Bridge" a system that can be accessed using a computer where you can manage the device from. You need the Android SDK to use it.
SDK - "Software Development Kit" a set of tools used for software development.
WIP - "Work In Progress"
JDK - "Java Development Kit" an SDK for the java platform. It is needed to run the Android SDK.
JRE - "Java Runtime Environment" a collection of binarys and files to allow java software to execute.
Execute - To "run" or "start" a binary
Binarys - (sometimes called bin's) a group of executable files.
RAM - Could be one of three meanings: 1. Memory for the CPU to process processes. 2. Random Access Memory, a place where information can be used, executed from, modified, or deleted. 3. A type of sheep.
SD - Short term for MicroSD
Marvel - A gsm version of the phone
Marvelc - The cdma version of the phone
Marvelct - A rare Easten CDMA version of the phone.
Marvel* - all versions of the HTC Wildfire S (see *)
GB - Could mean one of two things. 1. Gingerbread or 2. Great Britain
Gingerbread - Android 2.3
Froyo - Android 2.2
Honeycomb - Android 3.x. it was never released or ported to the wildfire s because it was built for tablets.
Ice cream sandwich / ICS - Android 4.0. The latest version of Android.

Okay, I think I'm ready to begin! Where do I start?
You have a few ways to go here..
But before we continue, let me explain something to you. Our phones have this 'flash counter' built in.
There is a way to reset it after you've triggered it, so don't be alarmed.
Flash counter? What's that?
The flash counter is a binary counter built in Samsung phones that is used by Samsung to basically help identify if you have been tampering with your firmware and flashing unofficial software.
Each time you flash unofficial firmware via Odin, your binary flash counter goes up by 1.

Ah, okay.. is there anyway to bypass that?
Yes and no.

whats the truth?
I was looking around at various sources when I updated to MK2_4.3 from 4.2.2 and I read that once you've Flashed MK2, updated 4.3 that there is no way to go back down to 4.2 . . . is this true? Also is it possible and/or stable to flash 4.2.2 Roms from MK2?

That is only true if you have done one of these three thing:
#1: Allowed OTA update to 4.3
#2: Updated to 4.3 using Kies
#3: Odin flashed the official stock 4.3 firmware from http://SamMobile (or elsewhere)
If you have not done any of those three things you can go back and forth between 4.2.2 and 4.3.
Good Luck!

How would I know if I were able to flash 4.2.2 Rom or not? Just give it a try and if it works then im good and if not it will say error or what (I am just asking so I don't try something and screw things up)
Also kinda off topic but Ive been trying to Flash a jfltexx Rom which is the GT-9505 int variant, I tend to use alot of their Roms and never have problems but latley when flashing aosp based roms like omni it says that i could only use jfltetmo builds, I was thinking that I could flash a TW based build like Foxhound or something then factory reset and flash from there and maybe it would register as a jfltexx but so far no luck. Thanks again

Personally I stay away from roms like that, I just stick to the
M919 Samsung Jellybean Touchwiz based custom roms.
Don't get me wrong I tried basically all of those AOSP/AOKP/CM/GE/KitCat and the Ported roms
but found that they all have one thing in common, they are basically stripped bare from all the niceties
and the bells and whistles which make the M919 Tmobile Jellybean Touchwiz based roms so excellent.
Since I am really not too much into those other roms, I would hate to guess at giving you or anyone
else any suggestions as to how to fix any issues you are having with those other roms.
As far as trying to go back to the M919 4.2.2 Jellybean Touchwiz based custom roms go it's easy,
just make a nandroid backup of your existing rom and see for yourself, if you don't get any errors
or other unusual issues trying to flash those roms then then you are Ok and need not worry about
the KNOX pox.
Remember there are only three ways to get KNOX on your phone as you saw in my previous post.
Good luck!

It might be coming from Cell Broadcast.. I'm not sure if Wicked has it or not but I remember getting amber alerts from the cell broadcast that was on the cm rom and there was settings on there to turn it on & off or if you wanted it keep it on you were able to control the types of emergency's to get alerts from like weather emergency's like hurricanes etc or amber alerts

Yeah I know what you mean... I agree with you about touchwiz ROMs compared with aosp/aokp/cm/pa/...
I was just asking because I've had this problem before and some how it went away and I never thought of it again until this last week went trying to flash Omni Rom...
What is your favorite Rom or some of your favorites... Like do you use several different roms or do you stay with a particular rom update to update?? Just wondering

Discussion: All things unified

I posted this in another thread about flashing S6 Edge roms on an S6. My post was prior to getting my S6. I had gotten my S6 information from a SM-G920I forum. I made the wrong assumption that all S6s would have the same partition layout, they don't. Once I got my S6 I found that the Sprint S6 and Edge did have the same partition layout. So flashing Sprint S6 Edge roms on an Sprint S6 does work. The OP of that post said, "I think that we have exhausted this topic." I am honoring the OP request, so started this thread.
With little happening, development wise, on the Sprint S6, we should be having this discussion. I came from the S4 and many of the roms that I ran were international roms. Their development far exceeds development on the Sprint variant. @AntaresOne's optimized CM 12.1 is definitely one of the best roms for the S4. @chenxiaolong's work on dualboot made possible running multiple roms on an S4 (this now works on the S6 Edge and so S6). @AntaresOne also added multirom support (@tassadars Nexus 7 work) for the S4. These are just some of the international S4 work that worked on the Sprint S4. I am sure in the future much of the good international work will work on the Sprint S6. We know from my incorrect post that SM-G920I (India) roms would have problems on our Sprint S6 without modifications to the updater script.
Continue the dialog here. We need to make International development work on our Sprint variant.
International ROMs are created for GSM phones, not CDMA phones. So unified development requires as you mentioned a proper update.script, an aroma like installer and either detection of carrier or have you choose so that the proper kernel can be installed, as the kernels will be a little different...so there would need to be correct kernels included to correspond with the chosen carrier.

Most of the innards is above my pay scale. However, I think what you are saying is probably all true for TW Albe95, Echoe, etc.) , but for AOSP so so. Once CM was unified, this opened the door for many of the AOSP roms (CM, pacman, GPE, etc). I do not know how they managed unified, but it was done with the same kernel, did not require aroma, and no changes to the updater script. I know dualboot patches the updater script in addition to other things and does flashes by name as opposed to partition number (/dev/block). I surely hope this technology gets carried over to the S6.

What is used is auto-detection and then auto-selection of proper kernels during the flashing which would be unseen to the user. This was mostly beneficial to the developers and maintainers because then they only had to monitor one thread.

What you refer to as auto-detection and auto-selection is all built into the rom or kernel, not the updater script. Most of my experience is with CM12.1 optimized which is unified by @AntaresOne and uses the @Alucard kernel. Neither rom nor kernel zips have any auto-selection in their updater scripts. Each has only one boot.img. I have flashed @Alucard's and @ktoonsez's kernels on both CM12.1 optimized and jfltespr CM12.1 nightlies along with other AOSP roms. As I can flash a unified kernel @Alucard and @ktoonsez) onto a device specific rom (CM jfltespr) quite a bit of the unification code must be in the kernel.

That's what I have seen.
Don't know this for fact, but in another thread read that Sprint variant is the only one that has different partition layout. Confirmed TMO and Canadian have same layout, but different from Sprint.

Awesome! I just got 3 S6's for myself and the fam. I'm gonna secretly root their phones and drop a custom ROM on it. This may be first on the list! Is there a way to get hotspot to work on this ROM?
First off... THANKS a bunch from all of us for our first ROM!!!
Second I just have 1 request and 2 questions..
Request is to include 3 Minit framework to be able to have crazyy customization!
2 questions are... what's the difference between this ROM and THIS one? And which FHA memory tweaks are implemented, and are they in the build.prop or kernel?
Thanks a lot @pwnyourace!!!!
EDIT: Also, ya'll guys getting an MD5 of: ca087eb0a5642b91d1440b3aa967dcbc

Awesome, thanks man! Also, just wondering which FHA tweaks are added into the build.prop? Bc I'm using these right now courtesy of @mikeyinid and they are working fantastic.
Code:
ro.config.fha_enable=true
ro.sys.fw.use_trim_settings=true
ro.sys.fw.empty_app_percent=50
ro.sys.fw.trim_empty_percent=100
ro.sys.fw.trim_cache_percent=100
ro.sys.fw.bservice_enable=true
ro.sys.fw.bservice_limit=5
ro.sys.fw.bservice_age=5000
ro.sys.fw.trim_enable_memory=128000000
I'm just using the FHA enable line along with removing dha. I'll give those values a try though and they might go in v2
I have a request.
I know lots of people enjoy the 3minit framework, but I absolutely hate it with a passion. It makes things super ugly and I could never figure out how to make things look like stock again.
My request is: if you do add the framework, can you please make it optional? I've already had to go back to stock ROMs twice now because the ROMs I wanted to use had this ugly framework stuff.
Thanks for considering.
Really dude...

I'm usually never around for the developmental part of these ROMs. I always come in as the devs are moving on to newer devices. This is pretty cool to see this ROM take form! I wish I knew more about this stuff so I could actually help y'all out.

I have but one hopefully simple request....
Can you please make a flashable modem/baseband?
The reason I ask this odd request is that in other model phones when flashing a different orgin roms example of i317 device with an i317m rom. Baseband would break but flashing the i317 radio fixed it and you could run the i317m rom perfectly.
I know cdma and gsm are different. But I also know 90% and have a very strong feeling that a,flashable modem/baseband of OF7/OFE will open access to cross platform roms like the note 2. potentially opening up experimentation of other roms from other carriers, including gsm carriers.
I've gotten roms from att, T-Mobile to boot up fine also got roms from g920i/f/v/vzw/etc to boot up(why the base and is needed) and all works fine except the baseband. On the,f model the baseband is only broken. Can you or someone very knowledgeable please make this theory a reality? pm me or something.
