Twrp Help please. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I've been having an issue with Twrp this pass month.
I haven't posted beacuse I know how many of you feel about people asking the same question over and over.
I've already googled it everyday but they always lead to a dead end.
(I have Twrp 2.5 as my recovery.)
[THE ISSUE]
Twrp doesnt restore my backups, it says it does but it doesn't. I need help on this please!

You are restoring your backups from recovery and not that application, right?
It could be possible that something went wrong during the backup of the ROM so when you restore it, it won't work.
I just recently updated to 2.5, when I have some free time on my hands I will try restoring a backup to see if it works.
If you think that its twrp (maybe you have a bad version of it) then back up everything on your phone (drag it out into your computer or something) and use wugfresh toolkit to put a new custom recovery of twrp on, and try it then.
Of course don't try that option if you don't have to since your you will lose everything on your phone!

Yes, I'm doing it from the recovery. And it's not backing up data. That's the only issue. And I'll try to do it

Oh, so the issue you have is not restoring data, its backup data? Well, I guess its restoring too because backing up data doesnt work.
I think it might be the twrp then. Hopefully it'll work after putting on twrp 2.5 again!

data.ext4.win is only 82MB, that seems small for the data partition unless you just backed up following a factory reset.
I would try copying data.ext4.win to a computer and opening it with WinRAR to see what is or isn't being backed up. Should have all kinds of apks in \app and folders in \data when you open it.

Does it give an error when backing up?
Are you running out of internal space for the backup to finish?

Yeah, I thought the files were to small in size. It restores but it's restores as if I just flashed a new rom.
•_•

Hi again so I just did a back up and restore and everything works fine.
cupfulloflol might be onto something, do you have enough space in your device?
EDIT:
OH! Do you have System, Data and Boot checked under Backup Device in Backup in TWRP?
Did you perhaps uncheck it by accident?

I had the same issue with the last 2 versions of it. It happens after a while had to fast boot clockworkmod to flash a new ROM because it wouldn't boot after that issue. Its strange.

Yeah they're both checked would "mounting the system" have to do something with it.

Under mount, the only options i have checked are unmount data and unmount cache
I havent touched any of the settings since I upgraded twrp today

Check the recovery log in the folder with the backup, it might give some insight into the problem.

Okay, I will do that! And the log has so much information haha.

I've fixed it guys! All i did was restore defaults and boom! Working and backing data!

[Q] Titanium Backup

I've done a search but can't find anything pertaining to my question, when I go into TB to restore my backed up apps, there's a line running thru them, what does that mean?

It means they are not currently installed.
That means the app has been uninstalled
means its deleted
Damn, how the hell do i get them back?...I'm not trying to play angry birds all over again!

Why would deleting system apps affect whether Titanium Backup can backup user apps & settings?
For the record, I had the same problem as the OP, TB shows the line thru everything. But I believe it's b/c I didn't update busybox..? Why on earth would the program say it backed up the apps fine, only to give an error message (parsing error) after the fact when trying to restore? Seems like a huge flaw to me. It should not report a successful backup when it in fact backed up nothing.
You scared the bejesus out of me about losing photos. Those are intact (as they should be, along with everything else on the SD). How would it even be possible to lose those by simply wiping the phone?
I always copy my files off the sd at least once a week. I have another prog called Folder Clone that back ups all my data onto another hard drive. Same prg also backs up to a DVD once a week. I still have data files going back to my Apple II days. Always have a comprehensive program to keep your data safe. /rant
TB makes only data backups of system apps.

So my game saves would have been lost even if TB worked? If so, what app backs those up?
Come on folks, help me help ya'll get your thank meters up lol
In tb look at the legend. What icon is next to your backup?
Also you may need to dl a busy box where it says "problems."
Do you have pro or donate version?

I have happy face icons for most games. Only my two Angry Birds have "M" icons.
edit - I never saw a "problem" label that would have forewarned about the busybox issue negating all backups..

No backups under cwm 3, not running cwm period. Likely rooted before cwm became part of the basic root package here.
Just running 2.1 stock, rooted, and TB.
Is extracting the backups (TARs) directly on my PC a possible rescue? (or are they corrupted TARs due to an earlier version of busybox?)
They're readable in WinRAR! Looks like I have a saving grace! Wonder why TB doesn't like them, even though it made them?
Oddly enough, when I first made the backups, TB was on default compression (gzip) and I noticed all the gzip files it was creating were 0 bytes. Luckily I changed it to BZIP2. When I saw that the backups now had file sizes, I assumed all was well..
On a separate note, is it still the case that TB doesn't backup SMS? I see conflicting reports on google searches. I already backed them up a different way, but was hoping TB would take care of that too, it didn't.
The one and only thing TB backed up and restored fine were my browser bookmarks (which is yet another pickle, why did that go fine, but game saves were corrupted/parsing error?)
TB also seems to like the "usb debugging" box to be checked under the main phone's settings->applications->development menu. Though when I don't have that checked it usually just hangs on an indefinite loop when restoring rather than giving the error you see.

Full Wipe, What Do You Loose?

looking to try a new ROM (curently using revolution 2.0.12), most/all gingerbread ROM require a full wipe but what do i loose doing that?
Is the SDcard left untouched?

Practically everything (contacts, apps, sms, email, settings, calls etc.)
that has to do with the Rom. Also if you use app2sd your ext partition will be wiped. You won't lose anything that is on the fat32 partition (such as files, pictures, mp3s etc)
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I think these threads answers your question:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=868720
If you use that tool all you have left after wiping is what is on your sdcard so you need to have the ROM zip on you sdcard and install it immediately after wiping with no reboot in between. You can't reboot in between as you will have just wiped all the files needed to be able to boot.
Although a full wipe is going to clear you out, don't forget if you are signed into google and allowing it to back up your data, all your contacts and apps will be restored to your new rom after signing into your google account.
What about Mobile Network Settings?

Full Wipe deletes user data, system and cache.
1. So the Mobile Network Settings are untouched and we don't have to enter them after a new rom?
2. Only after a new radio?
Cheers for the info. Getting the APN right is the only thing stopping me from rooting and flashing so far..
you will lose your apn settings, but you can bach them up with titanium backup. Also in most roms apns are included

You will certainly lose all of your data and settings, as for any apps on the ext partition of your sd card(if you have) i dont know. Anyway, to take it from the start im assuming that you are rooted since you run a custom rom. Read the whole post before doing anything
1.download rom manager from the market and take a nandroid backup of your system with your current sd and sim
2.download titanium backup and go to batch backup all apps and system data
3.flash the new rom
4.download titanium backup and go to batch restore missing apps
With the above procedure you transfer your apps from the old rom to the new rom, while you keep a backup of your whole system in case something goes wrong so you can reverse it. Now for the data
1. Download mybackup pro and take a data backup in your sd
2.download again in the new rom and restore everything
If you follow the above you should have in your new rom all your apps, all your data and all your settings

So if Titanium Backup can save the APN and APN login passwords etc. and I can back that up and flash a new rom, how do I restore those APN settings? Which app do I use? ie. I can't download it from the Market again without the APN settings and password to gain Network access? Can we backup the titanium app too before flashing a new rom?
(I flashed Windows Mobile loads of times but the first time cost me 1000 dollars (equivalent in Japan) because I got the Access Point details wrong and was charged the wrong data plan. This is the only reason I'm being extra careful some 2 years later.. cos I'm skint.)
Cheers.
You mean that you don't have access to a wireless connection/router/hotspot ?

That I can't understand, how can you pay more with wrong apn? I have only two apn, and the new one are only allowing faster internet. and the data plans are configured by operator and can't be changed by changing apn!

Pictures Disappeared

I recently installed the latest Ariel ROM after a full wipe, and when I look into my gallery none of my pictures show up. Even when I look into my DCIM folder in my storage they don't show up. My storage hasn't changed at all, so I know the pictures are hidden or something. Also, when I flash my nandroid of AOKP they show up in my DCIM folder, and they show up in my gallery, however most are blacked out for some reason. I have ROM manager installed so I tried to find the .nomedia file to delete it. After deleting a couple .nomedia files, I have all these random pictures popping up in my gallery lol. I'm in a mess over here, can anyone help me get my pictures back?

Try quickpic from google play. That might fix your issue.
What do you mean by full wipe? Describe what you did. I am personally on Ariel also and love it. No issues and its the best ROM I have tried so far.
Wipe data/factory reset 3 times, wipe cache 3 x, wipe dalvik, battery stats fix permissions then reset recovery. Then install ARIEL. Quickpic didn't seem to help.

Do you normally do that kind of wiping? I have been using wipe once for everything is fine and never had an issue. I think that was overkill. I would try wiping everything once, and flashing the current ROM over. Then if that doesn't work, try a different ROM.
This is how I wipe my phone:
Wipe factory reset
wipe cache
wipe dalvik cache
flash ROM
reboot
I do this for every ROM and don't have issues.
I've tried both AOKP, liquidsmooth and ARIEL a couple of times, still getting the same issue. They can't locate my pictures and now plugging into my computer, the files aren't showing up in the DCIM folder. Still says the same amount of storage as before when it still worked.

8.5" - Can get to recovery but error on installing any image?

Hi -
Brand spanky new owner of a Tab S 8.4, and took the plunge and rooted. The rooting process seemed to work find, and I could run SU. But then I went to try and load a couple ROMs. First I tried CyanogenMod (for T700). I noticed a couple errors (see screenshot below) and it went quite a bit quicker than I expected. When tablet rebooted, it booted back to OEM (but rooted) image. I tried this a few times, double checked MD5, etc., etc, and still the same issue. So then I thought I'd try a different ROM, BlissPop (also for the T700). Interestingly, I got the exact same error and problem. I've tried different microSD cards, and I should also clarify I wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition before each attempt to install ROM.
Any chance anyone has any advice? Did I maybe root incorrectly?
Here's an image of what my recovery screen looks like:

I'm not familiar with the sd fix for kitkat. If it makes a difference I take the microSD out and put it in my laptop to copy the ROM zip.
I tried to install from the internal SD card, but my recovery doesn't give me the option to change to there. Just the external.

Hi, from those pictures... You need to install twrp recovery. Since your rooted download a an app called flashify. Now grant it root and choose twrp recovery. Now pick twrp 2.8.1.0 and hit yup to install. Now just reboot into recovery and hit install then pick the zip and slide to install. Wipe cahes first too

Just for future reference you cannot install custom images with the stock recovery, thats why you needed TWRP. The auto rooting process flashes back the stock recovery.

Best Way to Backup Rooted Verizon Note 4

Ok... So i FINALLY got my Verizon Note 4 upgraded to Android 6.0 (Running ModestRom.v9) and it is rooted and I have TWRP....
So since advanced Android documentation and procedures are all horribly biased and completely different everywhere you turn I will ask it here...
The TWRP backup I can attest does NOT work at all.... I backed up my KitKat 4.4 rooted installation and then after trying to downgrade back to it by restoring it - I got the boot screen loop and was never able to even start it again until I upgraded back up to Android 5.1
So is there a way to backup EVERYTHING (like take a complete image of the phones boot internal SSD etc....) so that NO MATTER WHAT STATE THE PHONE IS IN and what bootloader and OS is loaded I will always be able to revert back to my backup? Or is this just a fantasy?

No.... TWRP definitely does not back up everything completely...
I attached a picture of the contents of the TWRP backup that I had TWRP restore from my sd card. I had TWRP complete the restore then wiped the cache and rebooted... It was stuck in a boot loop... i pulled the sd card... still stuck in a boot loop. I then wiped the datliv cache.. still stuck in boot loop.
TWRP backups are garbage and obviously DO NOT backup everything needed for a complete restore... Even on my PC i am able to boot in recovery and create a complete image of the boot sector and all. I can then restore that exact bit by bit image of my ssd and the computer will be EXACTLY as it was when i made the backup...
There needs to be a solution.

They've been working for me. ?? I've used it a few times now, heh — I am not used to Samsung bloatwear, and have def. "over-debloated" a few times.
If it helps, just as safeguard I still have ROM Manager (lol —if I put money into something, including TiBu, it's on my phone. Well, except that stupid Go Launcher (PRIME!) malware... ugh. I had a pretty flagship Moto once that was otherwise JUICED, but I had NEVER seen such a bad launcher! I would have used EMACS as my launcher I was so desperate (and yes you can!), but instead went to the Market aka "play store" (still hate it) and paid for first thing that had high stars. I was younger and stupid.) My twrp though doesn't have a launch drawer app at all; just boot into recovery. Not sure if I over debloated that or if I have to download something from the Market. (I hate the Market so much I use aptoide as default "app fetcher". MUCH more trustworthy, and they have apps Goolag doesn't let in.)
If it helps, I can report that ROM Manager still works? It recognizes my TWRPs and makes its own backups (full system) just like it's still 2011, and it knows TWRP is my recovery. And clockwork looks exactly the way you may remember, too. They haven't refreshed their UI at all. —And I don't mind that ONE bit. I mind TiBu's stupid UI because it is stupid, but ROM Manager just doesn't NEED much more of a UI imo. Open, backup or restore, reboot, profit).
BUT to use TWRP on the note, I have to boot into recovery. The last twrps I've had (on my last HTC Ones) have had an app drawer app, but I don't. Still, I've been backing up/restoring just fine from recovery. And I've just got a stock-ish xposed 6.0.1 Verizon (NO, wait: I just flashed Paul Pizz ROM, duh —btw that rom's quite lovely. SNAPPY!)
Can you boot into recovery and backup from there? I'd give that a few goes, save to phone, open on laptop, compare.

Lol nothing can back up a partition that is in use when you attempt backup. Have to do a nandroid backup not a recovery. Btw my recovery completely installs working os from clean wipe.
i have a question? where is the android device ID stored?
