Soft Bricked - Sprint LG Optimus G

So, my LGOG is soft-bricked with a dead battery (happened during a twrp backup, although i swear it was at least 60% when i started). I can get to fastboot by holding vol up and power, and then plugging it in (i lgnpst'd teenybin), but when i try to load recovery it shows a black screen that says google and has an unlocked padlock at the bottom for an instant, then dies.
Everyone on IRC has been very helpful, especially autoprime. When i plug it in, the cap button lights and the red led flash. I plugged it the wall in for about 30 minutes, no heat, nothing. So I am just going to leave it unplugged for the night in hopes something will reset or die enough that the battery charges next time i plug it in. Otherwise I will try a battery pull, and go from there.
If anyone has any insight on getting my battery charged via another method, it is certainly welcome and appreciated.

Did it charge? I'm curios if you fixed it.

It may have just been my luck, but when this happened to me, I put the phone into download mode by plugging into a USB port while holding volume up and volume down. After that, I unplugged and powered off, then plugged back in to normal ac charger, and it began to charge, as it showed the battery icon. Left it for a bit, then booted it up no problem. Might be worth a try before opening the phone.

Well, when i unplug mine from download mode, it dies immediately, so i don't think I am getting an opportunity to power it off to reset, but I'll give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion!
UPDATE: I tried, but with no avail, it just goes back to flashing alternately between the cap lights and the red led. I am going to try flashing zv9 stock in lgnpst, to see if maybe i can get into stock recovery.

maybe try charging from download mode? only thing i can think of

Battery pull LGOG worked
Well, battery pull worked! As soon as I flipped that battery bracket back down, the phone powered up and booted fine.
Now here is the interesting part... my phone powered back up and the battery was at 69%. It was not by any means dead. I even left it off the charger for a while to confirm. So, something happened during my TWRP backup that tripped a fault. Could allowing the screen to timeout in TWRP have caused this?
Either way, I want to thank autoprime again for helping me get to this point. My LGOG is back!

Well since I LGNPSTd back when jelly bean leaked and I flashed the update, I have not done anything but root. In fact, I had just installed FreeGee and installed TWRP 2.5 and was doing my first backup. So, something must have gotten corrupt during the backup; possibly because I was on the flashed update vs the OTA, idk...

Bricked or dead?

I was flashing a ROM, kernal, and radio. The phone went to reboot and nothing. I have tried the power button, holding down the volume rocker and the power button, both with and without the USB plugged in. When I plug it into the computer the computer beeps meaning it sees something is plugged in but the RUU doesn't see. The most telling thing to me the LED doesn't lite up indicating it's charging. So did I somehow brick it dead as a hammer or did it die?
I searched but didn't see anything like this. The other bricks I would would still turn on.
If it is bricked you probably did it flashing the radio. I hope someone can help you. And I know you might be panicking, but for future reference, this thread belongs in another section. Just saying before you get flamed.
Hate to say it but pretty sure its bricked. I don't mess with radios knowing my luck I'd have a nice paper weight.

Try this as I was in the same situation. Strange as it may sound it's sometimes your cable and charger and the voltage that it is sending.
Mine did that after an updated kernel. It would charge and then drain and it went to blank and nothing. Battery pulls, different cables, etc. nothing seemed to work. I was about to get a replacement. So I thought I would just try another charger. well I had already tried the car charger(no good), I tried the usb charger(no good) and I tried the usb pc(no good). As a what the hell thought I plugged in the OEM HTC charger and it worked.
Now today I flashed the CM 6 WIMAX ROM with the WIMAX Kernel that is used with it and guess what? The OEM charger would not take and charge at all but another wall charger and PC USB port will charge the phone.
It is strange but it is happening. Just thought I would share my experience so maybe you can experiment with it before calling it quits on your current setup.
If you have your OEM HTC USB wall charger make sure you use that. You will know if it works. It will blink an orange LED slowly. If so then let it sit for a few and then boot into the recovery and try another kernel.
What was your last kernel?
Good luck.

As in holding down the volume and powering on? If so, no dice. It won't boot at all.
How long has it been? I remember once my phone was spazzing out after a flash and wouldnt boot right. I ended up pulling the battery and letting it sit for a good 10 minutes without battery. Reinserted and was then able to boot to bootloader and flash a PC36IMG.zip

I don't access to another battery unfortunately.
Try booting with the sd card removed, just to rule it out.
try battery pull wait 10 seconds(for cache reset) then insert
then try Vol. down and power.
if not try power on(after cache reset)
Take the battery out.most of the time doing this will reset the phone.I had the same thing happend to me.I hope this helps

EMERGENCY - Total Brick Instant Bootloop

Screen went black.
Pulled battery.
Battery In.
Plugged into PC.
I get OMAP4440 in Device Manager for 0.8 seconds then instant dead phone.
OMAP4440 comes back half a second later then back to dead phone.
No Fastboot, No LCD, No Nothing.
DEAD Battery, I will keep it plugged in overnight, the USB may not be giving it enough voltage for the boot.
Any help greatly appreciated. There is not enough time to flash anything while the phone is actually "on" for the 0.8 seconds.
What caused the screen to go black? Did you flash something right before?
I mean this is no regular boot up, you obviously attempted something right before boot up!

Bricked?

Pretty sure it is. From a battery pull, phone will not power up. After pressing the power button the phone will vibrate once after a few seconds, but nothing else. Attempting to boot into the bootloader (power+volume down) does absolutely nothing. Any suggestions?

It's not due to a drained/dead battery. I should have mentioned I already ruled that out. I did just that, plus tested with a spare battery. No change.

I'm happy to report I've successfully unbricked my phone. For those curious about the actions I took, continue reading.
First off, what caused my phone to behave the way it did is beyond me. I had a hunch the phone was powering up and booting though as it was giving me that vibrate.
Here's what I did. Pulled the battery and let it sit for 5 min. Reinserted the battery and connected the phone to my computer. It gave me the charge indicator LED. I pressed the power button and let sit for about another 5 minutes. No indication from the phone that anything was happening mind you.
I ran a RUU to see if it saw the phone. Low and behold it did. The phone still appeared dead. I let the RUU run and do it's thing. After completion my phone successfully rebooted and loaded up just fine.
Although I do not know what caused the anomaly, I suspect firmware corruption/malfunction.
Anyway, all seems to be well now.
*phew*

any way to charge a phone once completely dead

any way to charge a phone once completely dead
as the title states, once in the bootloop issue if your battery ends up at 0% and can't be charged is there a way out of this. Here is my issue. I can't get into recovery. Hboot or fastboot are the only options available. Sometimes it boots into the ROM but instantly dies once restarting. No clue as to the trigger as I've tried pretty much all the combinations of factory reset, reboot-bootloader, erase cache etc etc etc trying to get this into a non on mode so it can charge.
In addition to this of course anytime I plug the phone in it automatically turns on in either bootloader or fastboot which gives it no opportunity to charge at all otherwise I would simply run the RUU which won't let me until it hits 30%. I've more or less come to the conclusion I have to send it in because its not quite the same situation that others have experienced. But was hoping to get an answer/fix so I don't have to send it in to HTC to get repaired since the RMA guys just told me it'll be 10 business days before they even get in parts to the texas facility to get it sent there for repairs.
also of note, I had managed to relock the bootloader but can't get enough juice to run the RUU
What about borrowing a battery or getting one and charging it. That would be better than sending it in.

With the current recovery. The phone can't charge while off. You can't let it die
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
yeah so far I've tried literally everything out there. I almost need a way to figure out how to wipe the rom so it can't restart and sit on the loading screen so it can charge, but so far no luck with anything in the forum. I've literally tried it all.
Could be worse, my replacement comes today (but cost the same sadly, looks like the gf will get a new one when I can send it out to htc for repairs and get it back)
So, when you plug the charger in, the phone starts up into hboot or something? And can you not press and hold power for 10 secs to force it to power off while still plugged in? My phone was charging while it was completely off. That's after I discharged it completely, it shut itself off.
any time I plug it in it automatically turns back on. If I hold down the power button for 10 seconds it simply reboots.

By either plugging in every time it stops charging or rebooting it like that you should be able to gradually charge it over 30%, that's what I heard. So it's not as easy as plug in and wait, but rather plug in, unplug, plug back in.
I have this same issue. Arent their any recoveries that charge while in recovery mode??
Yes.. The stock recovery. You need to flash that.
again, can't flash diddly because of low battery. So flashing stock recovery does nothing as it would end in an error.
Very possible solution! Worked for me!
It seems my reply via the XDA-App did not come through.. As I wanted to reply.
My H0X was also dead. Wouldn't charge nor boot, with wall charger or by pc.. but I thought.. well let's give it a chance by using my iPhone 4 charger (with HTC cable of course)
Guess what: It worked!
SO TO ALL WHO IS HAVING THIS 'WILL NOT CHARGE' PROBLEM:
Try an other charger, even try your wireless mouse, or other phone chargers.. Anything!

you don't think something silly like this idea has been done? When the phone is plugged into any outside source of charge, it turns on in bootloader. This does not charge it...
Get into fastboot and try charge ..same happened to me when I tried to install Mike's Rom. So what I ended up doing was after trying a millions things to get a little charge so I could flash stock recovery and relock bootloader. I turn phone off. Plug charge for 2 seconds unplug. Plug again unplug. Big pain in the ass. Don't let charger to long cause it boots phone againg. So usually u see led turn on then few seconds later it goes off that's when u have to unplug charger. Do that again a few times. Enough to get a little charge again to flash stock recover. Once u flash stock recover phone charges normally. You also need the correct RUU for ur phone. That's after flashing stock recovery then relock bootloader then flash ruu. Then u can try again a custom Rom or whatever u were doing

Phone died?

Hello everyone.
I have been using Tasks ROM for a while now. Last night my phone had a random reboot and other than that, no troubles.
Well about 20 minutes ago, my phone just turned off and will NOT come back on at all. I have done nothing different, cant get in to get a logcat or lastkmsg. It will not even boot up to the samsung screen.
It will vibrate when I plug it in or take out the battery and reput it in.
The only response I am getting is taking everything out (batter/sim/sd) and plugging it into my comp. The response is a Red light in the notification LED and a short vibrate, then nothing.
I get a Samsung logo if I just pull battery and reinsert.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
So you can't get into CWM or TWRP? And what Galaxy S3 Variant are you using?

Ii it possible you may have a bad battery? How new is it?(not that age of it matters) Also, do you have a case on the phone? Check to make sure the power button is not stuck. If you can get to boot logo, then its not dead-dead. If you've had your phone for awhile, double check the battery terminals are not oxidized. Unlikley, but worth checking and maybe check battery wih voltage meter if you have access to one. Then charge it overnight and check it again. One last thing to try is plug it in with the battery out and see if that does anything. Have you flashed anything lately? Modem? Scripts?

I have taken the battery out and plugged the phone straight into the computer and all that i get is a red light where the notification light is and then it disappears.
As for age, its a little over a year old.
I wasnt doing any flashing at the time, it just went kaput right after a phone call.
I had a mophie case on it, but not right now. I guess ill take it a part when i can and throw som alcohol on the battery button to see if it loosens it up. But other than that, I'm at a loss.
Not trying to pay $80 for a craigslister either.

Man, I don't know. Sounded like a charging issue at first, but looking I'm not so sure now. Anything stuck in your power slot? Maybe try leaving battery out overnight and see if it clears anything. If it starts to boot I would go right to recovery and try flashing something. I would be concernedabout going straight to download mode and using oOdin cause of it does during the flash that is really bad...
Can you get into download mode? Pull battery plug in USB and hold volume down and home buttons I think... when you plug USB in to computer does Odin recognize it at all?

I just started having the same issue. I have a an ATT S3 running the newest Hyperdrive. Mine wasnt doing a random reset, but it seemed like it has been turning itself off. Totally intermittent, i couldnt pinpoint the cause.
Then just today when i went to see if i had any messages and the phone was off again (i had about a 60-75% charge) I hit the power button a few times and now i am getting the symptoms described above.
When i try to go into TWRP, i get the blue text at the top left of the screen, sometimes i make it to the first hyperdrive screen, then it goes black.
When I go to download I can get to the hit up or down screen, i hit up to go into download, i get to the next screen then it goes black again.
I did leave the battery out for about 15minutes and no dice. I even tried to leave it on the charger thinking i lost all charge or something.
I am just a mere user, but i have always been able to tinker around enough not to bother the devs and get my way out of these situations, but I think i am stuck. Anyone have any ideas?
Thank you!

I believe so, unless you pull the battery. In fact pull battery plug into usb and go into down load mode and see if it restarts. Or go into recovery without holding power button, and if you can then that means the power button is stuck on.

Pretty sure the flex cable on you're power button is not working as intended, could be a short from a rain drop or just everyday wear and tear another issue could be that the battery is fried and can't hold a charge, but this seems unlikely given you're circumstance.
I always tell people to utilize pie controls to save you're everyday use from wearing out our precious hardware buttons, My power and home only get pressed to wake the device, everything else is pie control via LMT launcher
That happened to me a few months ago. I was at work when it happened. The phone would just continually restart, vibrate, restart, back and forth. I ended up taking the battery out so it wouldn't get drained. Had it out for about four hours. Once I got home, I put it back in and never had any more problems. It was just a random thing, so try keeping the battery out for a while.
I'll keep my fingers crossed. I took the phone apart last night to clean it out and it was pretty spotless. But It keeps shutting off after trying to boot after a few seconds. I just hope I can get to a point where I can get my pictures off of it now.

Hello all, as an update, I did nothing to my S3 over the weekend haping something magical could happen.
Today I went through all the normal steps again, and still a dead soldier. Now it wont ever SHow the Samsung logo however - just a short vibrate then nothing..
Still get a red light and a short vibrate when plugging into the comp without battery in though.
I have NOT taken it apart yet, but I will tonight most likely.
Thanks for all the suggestions and Ill keep this updated.

Hello again,
Some news, I am able to get it into download mode for about 1 second then the phone shuts off - just like the other person in this thread with the same issue.
I took the phone apart and used a Qtip with 91% isopropyl Alcohol to try and clean the power button (which looks surprisingly clean). Still the same thing happening.
I'm running out of ideas here, so please chime in if you have any.
Thanks

I was going to try the alcohol tonight, but I am afraid that I will have same results. I am going to try a new battery from another s3 tomorrow. I will post the results.

Final update (hopefully)
I got the qtip and scrubbed anything to do with the battery, pressed the power button, got more alcohol in by the button (not a lot) scrubbed some more terminals, and the battery terminals, etc. waited about ten minutes and put the battery in...
Low and behold, something worked and now the phone comes on.
I dont know which part of the scrubbing actually did it, but something worked.
All in all I have no idea what actually fixed it, but the point is that it works.
Thank you for who those that insisted that it was a power button issue - you were most likely right.
So here are my results as of today, and what I have tried to get to this point:
After my S3 died and wouldn't boot up into recovery i tried cleaning all the internals with alcohol. I cleaned thoroughly, and focused on the charging port, the power switch and battery terminals. The phone acted exactly the same.
I then tried putting it in a bowl of rice for about 24 hours. I was thinking that it might have been caused by some condensation. No success.
I was thinking since the power would turn on whenever i plugged the battery in, that maybe the switch was stuck. I took it apart again and tested the switch with a multi-meter. The switch seemed fine. It was responding when i pushed it, so i figured that wasn't the problem.
I kept reading that apparently this is an issue with the mother board. I tried the broken PS3 method of heating up the motherboard with a heat gun in hopes to re-seat something that may be loose. This did not work either. After this, I figured i was SOL since I was out of ideas and out of warranty (which didn't really matter anyway since I am running Hyperdrive).
Earlier today I figured the best tool in your toolbox sometimes is a hammer. I started tapping the phone on the side of my table, especially around the power button, while trying to turn it on. It didn't seem like it was doing anything either. I then plugged the phone into the charger since i thought the battery was totally dead.
A few minutes after i walked away from the phone, I came back into room and the red charging light was on. I tried turning it on, and holy cow it works...wtf...
I have no idea what made this work. It could be a complete coincidence. But, this phone has not worked since last Saturday. I just kept messing with it and may have just gotten lucky. I don't think banging your phone will fix this, but if truly was a hardware issue, maybe something in the phones mother board is becoming loose from the extreme heat they endure at times. I know my S3 has gotten pretty hot when I use it to navigate and leave it in the case.
I don't know if any of this will help anyone, but this is my experience so far of my S3 having what I think is the sudden death failure. I will followup with any updates if it decides to act up again.
