PHONE: ROOTED HTC DESIRE GSM S-OFF'D Running cm7
Used ROM manager to update Clockwork Recovery in anticipation of installing the newest CM7 which came out yesterday.
Now i can't reboot into recovery just sticks on the splash screen even when i try and access it through FASTBOOT or by turning on holding down BACK + POWER
There is an article here:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/...to-reboot-to-recovery/page__p__4343#entry4343
I just need a little help understanding these, particularly option 1
"Solution 1. - Fastboot
Prerequisites:
Dream/G1 devices with DangerSPL, all other devices (MT3G 32A/32B) with an engineering SPL (S-OFF in HBOOT mode).
Users with SDK tools set up.
How to:
Reboot to bootloader holding Back+Power or Vol.down+Power or whatever combination applies to your device.
Attach your device to a USB port and open up a Terminal/Command prompt of choice
Navigate to the folder where your recovery image is, then flash it like so:
fastboot flash recovery recovery_of_choice.img
Reboot to recovery to verify your work. "

Click to collapse
Not sure how to do this, is this done through SDK??
Attach your device to a USB port and open up a Terminal/Command prompt of choice
Is this something i get from Unrevoked??
fastboot flash recovery recovery_of_choice.img
Sorry for being basic.
Theres a fastboot faq linked in my signature. Tells you all you need to know.
Another thing, NEVER follow instructions for other phones. EVER
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Thanks RootSU, looks useful. What is it that i actually need to do though? Do i need to reflash something that i did during the root process or just set up adb in order to try and access recovery that way?
Really appreciate your help here.
Thanks
Ben
Forget adb, its something totally different.
Just set up your PC to work with fastboot as per the FAQ.
Download the recovery you want to flash (Ensure it is a desire version)
Boot into fastboot on the phone (Back and power from off)
Then use the command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery nameofrecoveryfile.img
Its all in the faq.
Managed to get it up and running, downloaded clockwork recovery then followed the instructions here:
Thanks
Here is a simple tutorial on how to unlock bootloader and root your Htc One V.
Do this AT YOUR OWN RISK and I don't guarantee it will work on all Htc One V (but successfully done on my Htc One V (PrimoU)).
First: Credits go to:
1) paulobrien for his tools & guide
2) bagofcrap24 for the stolen unlocking bootloader tutorial..
Second: It is good to have official RUU for your Htc One V version. You can find the official RUU HERE(credit : JMZ) & HTCSync in case you something goes wrong and you need to revive your One V.
Or make a nandroid backup after you successfully unlock the bootloader. How ? Read further below. So read fully before you attempt to unlock bootloader and rooting.
Third: the tutorial
Unlocking Your Bootloader
Note: After doing unlocking bootloader, all your data/apps are gone so make a backup to your PC first.
You will need to run the initial setup again.
1. Go Here "http://www.htcdev.com/" and create yourself an account on HTCDEV.
2. Download These Fastboot Files
3. Make a new folder on your C: drive called fastboot.
4. Extract The Zip downloaded in step 2 to the new folder
5. Go Here http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/ and select "All Other Supported Models" and "then begin unlock bootloader"
6. Yes, Tick both Boxes, Proceed
7. Skip up to step 8 as we have all we need for the first 7 steps
8. Power off your phone by holding the power button down for 5-7 seconds (the three keys will flash a few times then it will power off)
9. Hold volume down button, the device will boot to HBOOT
10. Select Fastboot With Volume+or- then press Power once (you'll be in fastboot mode)
11. plug your phone into your PC and open a Command Prompt.
(windows XP - Click Start > Run > type CMD in box then press OK
(Windows 7 - Click Start > type CMD in search box then press Enter)
12. cd to your folder where we put fastboot files cd c:\fastboot
13. type this into your command prompt window fastboot oem get_identifier_token
14. select & copy the text as per step 9 on the HTCDev website
15. paste your identifier token into the box at the bottom and submit
You Will Very Shortly Receive an email from HTCDev with a link to the second part of the instructions and your "Unlock_code.bin" attached
16. download the "Unlock_code.bin" from the email and save it to the same folder that we extracted fastboot files to in step 2
17. type this into your command prompt window fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
18. The Display Will change on your phone, press Vol + to accept and power to confirm.
Congratulations You Have Successfully Unlocked Your Bootloader
UPDATE: Read the IMPORTANT note added below
Rooting with Superboot for GSM Device (Primo U)
1. Download r1-primo-superboot.zip to your computer and extract in any directory.
2. Download the modded boot.superboot.img
3. Replace the boot.superboot.img in the folder that you extracted just now (r1-primo-superboot).
Or download one of the Superboot that relevant to your device HERE
4. Power off your phone by holding the power button down for 5-7 seconds (the three keys will flash a few times then it will power off)
5. Hold volume down button, the device will boot to HBOOT
6. Select Fastboot With Volume+or- then press Power once (you'll be in fastboot mode)
7. Connect your phone to PC
8. Double click ‘install-superboot-windows.bat’
Rooting with Superboot for CDMA Device (Primo C)
1. Download r1-primo-cdma-superboot.zip to your computer and extract in any directory.
2. Power off your phone by holding the power button down for 5-7 seconds (the three keys will flash a few times then it will power off)
3. Hold volume down button, the device will boot to HBOOT
4. Select Fastboot With Volume+or- then press Power once (you'll be in fastboot mode)
5. Connect your phone to PC
6. Double click ‘install-superboot-windows.bat’
Once it complete, the phone will reboot on its own. In app drawer you will see a SuperSU icon, click on it and update SU binary then you are done with rooting your Htc One V.
You can try any app with root access to confirm it is working.

IMPORTANT
As some people forget to make a nandroid backup for their stock ROM, after they successfully unlocked their device,
when a soft brick happens, it will be a big problem to be back on stock when they are unable to find the official RUU for their device.
So make sure, after successfully unlocked your device, don't do anything else yet, flash the CWM recovery and make a nandroid, make nandroid and nandroid of your stock ROM.
Download the Recovery for GSM Device:
CWM 5 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28153112
Direct download link : http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.8.4.5-primou.img
CWM 6 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1871243 (the latest version as at 05 Sep 2012)
Download the Recovery for CDMA Device:
CWM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749798
How to make a nandroid backup ?
Once the CWM recovery installed:
Press power once (to go to hboot)
press volume down/up to navigate the menu to RECOVERY, press POWER once
Once in the RECOVERY menu:
click backup and restore
click backup
the backup process is running. It will be a few minutes to complete.
once complete, check whether the backup is successful
click backup and restore
click restore
you will see your backup files, e.g: 2012-06-12.0.13.04
click Go Back or use the back button
click reboot system now to boot your device
once fully booted, mount your sdcard to PC, browse to \clockworkmod\backup and copy the 2012-06-12.0.13.04 folder to your PC as a second backup in case something is wrong with your sdcard.
2012-06-12.0.13.04 is an example only, you will get a different no.
Alternatively, you also can use TWRP recovery:
GSM version - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721749
CDMA version - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1764183
Now you are ready to do the rooting process.
Once your device is rooted, you are free to do whatever you want to do with your device, to flash a custom ROM, a custom kernel... whatever.
If soft brick happens and there is no official RUU, a stock nandroid backup may helps you
It doesn't work !!!!
It stucks at -waiting for device- in
11. type this into your command prompt window fastboot oem get_identifier_token
It works perfectly when s off and root. But why cant i gain root access when i already have SU app?
I tried to update the SU but it failed on gaining root access and busybox list.
When i used root uninstaller app, it asked me for adb access which i dunno. What do i have to do?

I don't see why rooting is a development issue. Development is for, well, software development like ROMs and recoveries, etc. Rooting is required to develop, but isn't development per-se.
I am planning on buying this phone.
I just have a few questions.
What is S-off and S-on?
Also, what is RUU?

I just give a basic explanation:
S-Off - security off - you can change everything including hboot partition layout, radio, system, data & recovery
S-On - opposite of the above, all cannot be change (which normally with a locked bootloader)
S-On + unlocked bootloader - you can change only system, data & recovery
RUU - ROM Update Utility - and exe file which consist all the OS files to be installed to the phone.

How do you toggle S-On to S-off?
Why is it recommended to have the RUU you said one should have?

We have to wait until a developer finds an exploit.
To root, it is mandatory to have S-OFF?
Can I just make the root without the S-OFF?
Im here again:
How can I make S-OFF in my HTC One V, the HTCDev teaches seeks to remove the battery, but the HTC One V has internal battery (you can not remove)?
Someone who has made S-OFF on your HTC One V, could you help me?
(sorry my bad english, im speak portuguese only)...

You cannot do restore factory settings when you moved some system apks out from nand.
In order to flash a RUU:
1) you need an official RUU for your device.
2) you have htc usb drivers installed on PC.
3) relock the bootloader
in fastboot mode type fastboot oem lock
4) flash RUU
Do you have some kind of note of your actual software version number ?

PRIMOV PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.16.0000

Edit: I have fastboot relocked but unable to flash with the rom above... I was something like "please update with the proper utility". When I try to flash I have "From Image version 1.56.401.1" "to Image version 1.41.401.1".
Maybe I have to push system files again with adb?

Hi
I bought my wfs in poland (sorry for my english and mistakes). I have problem because I updated my phone to 2.26.401.3 in phone jumped message about new soft and I update. Now I unlocked bootloader with htcdev and when I go into recovery (cwm installed by rom manager) I have black screen and under screen leds are light. I tried this but this isn't working now i downgraded phone to 2.13.401.3 and recovery (cwm) still not working. I tried another recovery but no one working. I want install new rom. What do? Can I install custom rom without recovery? or any solutions of this problem?
I had very similar problems, and could not find any solution, so I created custom recovery.img with appropriate kernel. Download attached recovery.img and using fastboot burn it:
$ fastboot flash recovery recovery,img
Phone needs to be in "fastboot usb" mode. Let me know if you have problems with it. Works for me.

[TUTORIAL] How to Install ClockworkMod Recovery on wildfire s
I Hope you have SDK tools for Android, Java runtime, and HTC Sync installed on your Windows PC. After unlocking the bootloader and rooted your device follow this:
(Note: You only need to install HTC Sync for the drivers that come with it. But the program sometimes causes conflicts, so during this procedure, make sure it is not running. Open Task Manager in Windows and kill it. If you don’t use HTC Sync, you may also open Control Panel and uninstall it without uninstalling the drivers.)
[OPTIONAL] Update Android software version to 2.3.5
If you have a Marvel/A510e, It is recommended updating to 2.3.5 before proceeding (if possible), though you can root a 2.3.3 device. If you decide to root 2.3.3 now and install 2.3.5 later, you’ll loose your root, cwm and have to do it again.
Make sure the phone is connected in Charge only mode. Enable USB debugging by going to Settings > Applications > Development > USB. Also Disable "Fast boot" by go to Settings>Power>uncheck "Fast boot".
1. Download the official 5.0.2.8 image at ClockworkMod’s index of recoveries here: http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager/
Make sure you choose the right one for your device whether Marvel or MarvelC. If you downloaded the zip version, extract the img file from the zip you just downloaded.
2. Boot the phone into HBOOT. After it scans for PG7610.zip, select 'FASTBOOT' and press the <Power> button then connect the USB cable. The word 'FASTBOOT' will change into 'FASTBOOT USB'. If not, then either your USB drivers for the Wildfire S or Android SDK Tools is not installed properly.
3. Open command prompt in Windows and navigate to the folder where you extracted the recovery image in step 1.
4. Type the following command: fastboot flash recovery [image name.img]. For example:
c:\android\>fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvel.img
Try the above method, if it fails then go down:
It's a full version, so just download the .zip put it in sdcard then replace battery, press <power> with Vol Down.

cant work for me dear
For most people, following all these different methods to root your phone for to get a simple rooted ROMs has cause many a headache. I'm no expert and dont pretend to be, but I'm a huge fan of fast and simple. So without further ado, I present to you the Darn Simple nearly universal HTC way too gain root.
****Warning****Unlocking your bootloader through HTCDev will permanently void your warranty with HTC. For that reason, this method isnt preferred over using tools like Revolutionary. Unfortunately, Revolutionary doesnt work for the most recent HBoot, so if you try it and it doesnt work, you'll have to try an alternative root method.
If you simply want to root so you can flash ROMs or get WiFi tethering and dont really care about regaining a warranty later, then this guide is for you. Otherwise, you may want to consider another method.
The HTC Unlock is universal. Once you unlock your bootloader, you can flash whatever ROM you want.As far as compatibility, you should always read the post. Most devs warn you to do that before you go flashing willy nilly.
****END Warning****Since HTCDev provides a bootloader unlock tool, all you need to do is unlock your bootloader by going to http://htcdev.com/bootloader/ and following the instructions. As far as I know, all you need is the HTC drivers for your phone, and Fastboot.
LINK
open CMD, browse to the folder you downloaded and extracted for example, if the extracted folder is C:\User\Downloads\ADB_Fastboot then type in
Code:
cd "C:\User\Downloads\ADB_Fastboot"
in quotes. then, on your phone, go into settings > applications > development and check usb debugging.
Once that's done, type the following command into your command line:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
This will reboot your phone into bootloader mode. Alternately, you can pull your battery and then hold volume down and press power. This will not work if you simply turn the phone off from the power menu unless you uncheck the Power > Fastboot option.
Go to the development section of the forum for your phone, in this case, since it's the Droid Incredible 2 thread, that will be here.
Do a search for recovery. That will take you to the latest available recoveries for your phone. Alternately, you can search google for Clockworkmod recovery "Enter phone name here" since ClockWorkMod is almost universal. For HTC, you will be downloading a .img file.
I've attached a recovery image to flash. This will get outdated, and there are other recoveries out there. I
Make sure your download is complete and make sure the file you find is for your phone. This is the absolute most dangerous part of the whole process. If you have the right img for your phone and it's a complete download, then there is no room for error. Mistyping the command will only result in you not flashing the file.
download the file to the same folder as your fastboot and adb files.
If you look at your phone it should says FASTBOOT USB in a red block. If not, one of three things need to be checked.
Your USB cable is not connected. Plug it in.
Your drivers have not installed yet. Go to HTC.com and find the drivers. (If someone has a link, please leave a comment)
You are not in fastboot mode. Press the power button on Fastboot and then let it connect.
If you followed all the steps from HTCDev completely, then on the very top, you should see the word ***Unlocked*** if not, you need to redo the HTC Dev step. We wont be able to continue without an unlocked bootloader.
In the command line, type in
Code:
fastboot flash recovery nameOfRecoveryFileHere.img
You can always rename the file to make it easier to flash.
Once that's done, on your phone, go to bootloader using the volume buttons, select it with power, and then select recovery.
Youre done with the difficult and dangerous part! Congratulations!
For many HTC phones, all you have to do is flash the SU package, (Attached below) from recovery. I havent tested it for this phone because I dont own one, but instead of keeping up with all the rooting methods, I just backup the current stock unrooted ROM just in case you need to revert for some reason, then I flash a rooted ROM. All the work is done for you! So if you want to find a ROM to download and get that in the works, that'l save you some time.
Here's the one I used. It's the stock ROM but rooted
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1737494
Next, we'll go down to the backup and restore option in your recovery, and then hit backup. This will take about 3 minutes.
When this finishes, press the back arrow about 3 times and then go down and select mounts and storage. You should now see a list. At the bottom, it should say mount usb storage. Select that. That will mount your SD card on your computer to allow you to drag the downloaded ROM there. Once that's done, you can hit the back arrow until you're at the main screen. The select install zip from SD Card > Choose zip from sd card, then navigate to the file you transferred. Select yes on the next screen and then wait for it to flash. Once that finishes, go back once more to the main screen, select factory reset and then you're done! Your phone is now rooted! press the back arrow and then select reboot now. Wait a few minutes as the first boot takes a while. Your phone will now start up and you're rooted!
Note:If anyone gets stuck, the backup you just made will restore you to your stock ROM without root. Then you can try again. Just go to backup and restore > restore > then select your backup and yes. This will put everything back.
Please post any comments or questions below and I will do my best to answer them. This is my first tutorial, so be kind! Since I've been doing this for a while, i may have missed steps that are second nature to me. If anyone gets stuck, let me know and I'll add the necessary information into the post.

As always, the thanks button is below.
Great tutorial. Question though. If I'm S-Off but on 2.3.4 can I just flash a recovery and an su package to get proper root?

You should be able to. Since I havent tried that method with this phone, there's a change it might not work. But that seems to be a general method nowadays. Make a backup of your system first, just in case it doesnt work right. Then you can flash the SU package and see if it works. if not, go ahead and restore the backup.
The reason people choose to do the "hard" (it's not actually that hard, I did it in 5 minutes) method to gain root access on their phone is mainly for a full S-OFF that you don't get with HTC Dev, and the ability to unvoid their warranty. HTC tracks the serial numbers used with the HTC dev tool so your warranty is permanently void, but when you use Revolutionary, you can always return to stock and put S-ON again, and HTC or Verizon would have never known. That's the reason this method is discouraged.

I will post that in the OP.
I followed your thread,,to save time.trusting your guide only gave me a brick..I know you tried but you failed to mention what version this works on,
by that i mean radio version..sux
I went this route at first. The HTC unlock only lets you run stock and near stock kernels. Most custom roms woun't boot. If you don't mind running a stock rooted rom this works.

This has nothing to do with radio version. The HTC Unlock is universal. Once you unlock your bootloader, you can flash whatever ROM you want.As far as compatibility, you should always read the post. Most devs warn you to do that before you go flashing willy nilly. I'll update the OP with this information as well. Thank you for your input.
I click on unlock bootloader and nothing happens, no instructions or anything. It just stays at the unlock bootloader screen. I don't know what I'm missing.

Try a different web browser. Sometimes Google Chrome doesnt work for me with the HTCDev website.
Or. If you have fastboot installed, run
Code:
fastboot oem get_identifier_token
while your phone is booted into the bootloader. If you can give me the code there, I dont mind getting you the file you need.

is the error I get. It seems like there is no driver, but I don't know how that can be. I works in windows and see's my dinc2 as myhtc in the device manager.
Edit: Issue resolved
Hello everyone,
Pardon my lack of knowledge on rooting devices and all the related things. This is my first time attempting to root a device and I am having a lot of trouble understanding how to go about things. Through my research, I'm finding a lot of different ways to do things and I want a direct opinion on my process so I don't mess up my phone. (Through as much research as I could) My end goal is to have TWRP flashed to my phone, root my device and install a custom ROM. My understanding is that I first need to unlock the bootloader, flash TWRP, install SuperSU, then flash the custom ROM. I won this phone from a raffle and I'm trying to root from a Windows 10 laptop.
I have the TWRP and SuperSU files at the ready and have also installed Kingo root. I enabled USB debugging and allowed the bootloader to be unlocked in developer settings. I tried to boot into download and bootloader and successfully recognized my device, but when trying to use "fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.2.3-0-hima.img" it gave me the error message "FAILED (remote: cannot flash this partition in s-on state)" and "FAILED (remote: 9 RU_SECURITY_FAIL recovery and bootloader isn't BL_UNLOCKE)"
I'd assumed my phone was already unlocked but that's obviously not the case. Doing some more research I found a lot of people needed to get a bootloader unlock from HTCdev.
Is this what I need to do now to continue?
What about this "s-on state" how can I turn it off?
Will unlocking the bootloader wipe my device?
Could I just use the "root" button in the Kingo root main app?
Can anyone verify my theoretical steps and give quick notes on how I should be doing them properly?
Any help is greatly appreciated
dont worry i will help you
Download all in one Android toolkit for your PC...
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...FjAAegQIBRAB&usg=AOvVaw0sohDTlAE3UaLSgUihYhS3
and connect your phone to PC and allow USB debugging after that
go to Android all in one toolkit and select unlock bootloader....on the screen of your phone it would ask you if you want to unlock bootloader press volume up for yes
volume down for no
Select yes...but
Note:It would reset everything on your phone so back up your necessary files
Make sure you download the right twrp image for your phone (Google search)
Move the Twrp.img to your PC local directory folder and rename it to TWRP.img ....next step is to:-
next step is to go to windows command prompt on your PC and type the following commands:-
Adb devices
Adb reboot bootloader
Fastboot devices
Fastboot flash recovery TWRP.img
Note:make sure you reboot your phone to recovery before normal reboot so that it would replace your previous stock rom
Go to twrp and install the latest version of super su
https://download.chainfire.eu/696/supersu/
This steps worked for me it can work for almost all types of phone
