you either need the customized version of wifi tether or you need to use the built-in tether tool. customized version is kicking around here on the forums, I think I found it over in the CM.1 Nightlies thread myself.

I'm using "Hotspot Toggle Widget" by Fattin (4.2.2 | Verizon).
The app does not provide hotspot functionality per se. It is a widget to toggle the built-in hotspot on and off. It bypasses the annoying carrier check that checks if you have a tether plan or not.
Great for those of us who are still enjoying grandfathered unlimited data.
The app also does not require root.

Thank you

my carrier-sprint --must have a hook in their version of JB 4.2.1........I am wanting to enjoy my unlimited also like before the individual charges and money came into play... I use to use my G1(HTC Dream) and other Android phones to access the net for what I needed back in the dayzz...I know its possible. I just need the guidance

If someone is interested, here is the solution for using the USB tethering on Mac (instead of using the WiFi hotspot)
http://joshuawise.com/horndis

K.... I finally figured it out. I thank you guys for your input. I got Sourcery 5.1 installed and I got my hotspot working with no flaws...my next involved mod is gonna be on a Alps Mid 7 dual sim card unit running 4.04-GSM/FM Transceiver... Im thinking active frequency jumping is what I want my radio to do.. This is the place for it to be done. Ideas ROMs and kernels will be appreciated

Portable Hotspot: Subscription Req'd?

Hmm... my stock Cyanogen Incredible never checks for subscription status when I turn on Mobile Hotspot, it was included on my phone and I'm therefore able to turn it on without any cost necessary...
Go here:
http://support.verizonwireless.com/clc/devices/index.html?p=5801&m
And then check out the "Portable Hotspot" section, and as you go through the tutorial as soon as the user hits the checkbox for Hotspot it checks for a subscription...
I use portable hotspot everyday and I planned not to root my GNex when I get it... I guess this means I must? :-\

Root + barnacletether or wifitether (both available from code.google.com IIRC, you have to enable sideloading), or leave it stock and pay for pdanet or similar.

So if I flash a new ROM = "subscription" checking is taken out? God damn it... so ridiculous of VZW :|

Yes. CyanogenMod isn't reporting to VZW that you're tethering LOL. Rooting and removing VZW tether tracking software or installing a custom ROM will let you tether for free.
Did you really expect Verizon to let people tether for free on their network? You've got to be kidding me...
Has anything been released yet to remove the tracking software?
HSPA/GSM tethering uses unmolested AOSP tethering. There is some interaction back to Verizon one Verizon GN.
Tested this on an AT&T SIM, T-Mobile US SIM and a Vodafone Australia SIM - all not subscribed to any tethering plans - all worked.
Darned Verizon. I hope someone finds a workaround soon.
I suspect it's under settings.db--> secure but I'm not brave enough to poke around in there. You can probably change it the same way you do on the Droid Bionic, but it's just in a different place or titled differently.

Android-wifi-tether is working now(WiFi Tether for Root Users 3.1-pre110) still has a couple bugs which are being worked on, but it connects fine. I'm using it now on an LTE GNX.
You can get it here:
Wireless Tether for Root Users == android-wifi-tether
Don't know about Barnacle, haven't looked in to it.

[Q] Which free tethering method should I pursue?

In reading through this forum all day, I am somewhat stuck on my next goal -> free tethering.
SO I currently have root access on my epic 4g touch (sprint) via the method under [ROOT][NCIQ][EG30/EG31/EK02] Auto root your existing stock ROM (w/o ODIN/ROM Flash). I took options A and C for CWM. Now I'm trying to determine which method is best for obtaining the free tethering/hotspot.
1. I have been looking at 2 in particular; one is posted by qbking - in a video dated back to Sept 2011. It is meant for the epic 4g touch although he demo'ed this on an epic 4g - and now all of the comments mention that it didnt work for the 4g touch so I'm somewhat afraid that this method doesnt work at all... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQpIxUxnCqU
2. Then there is a mod posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1390304 which I have to admit is more confusing than anything Ive seen thus far with the number of zips in the post and no clear instruction on installing any of them. It also looks like I'd have to flash my rom in this case?
I'm really curious if the hotspot can be obtained without flashing. if you have recommendations/experience in this portion, please let me know.
I rooted my phone and haven't done anything to it other than that for the sole purpose of tethering. I use an app called "WiFi tether" ver. 3.1 beta6 and it works great. I use it at work with a laptop to stream NFL Sunday ticket. Not supposed to have internet access at work for "security reasons"

No, you just flash the version that corresponds to your radio. It will replace the Sprint Hotspot application to remove the checks to see if you paid for hotspot. As such it is probably the easiest option than messing with Android-wifi-tether. (I have issues with it disconnecting after a while, etc etc)

Google wifi tether should only be used when the carrier has completely removed tethering from your devices settings menue.
Metropcs does this with their smartphones, so everyone on metropcs uses code.Google.Com wifi tether.

Oh this is the exact question I'm looking for and hope you can verify before I perform it. I want to use wifi tether for root users, is that the one you have. It says it requires root and a "netfilter enabled kernel" Now do I have to install a new kernel or the stock kernel have this and all I need to do is get root and install the app?
I have the galaxy s2 for sprint with latetest firmware as of today's date. It says d710.10 for hardware and gingerbread.ek02.
I'm double checking becuase I'm seeing so many people flashing the wrong roms and messing up their phones. Don't want that to happen to me.

WIFI Tethering on T-mobile

Do you know of any settings to have wifi tethering work without the hotspot plan?
With my old HTC sensation I just had to create a new apn with (epc.tmobile.com) to make it work, but with the GIII this is a no go....
If you are rooted...this works great:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27774452&postcount=9
Foxfi In the Play Store. No root needed just read the description to make sure it supports your device.
Thanks, will try Foxfi and let you know if works.
Thanks

Look over here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766155&highlight=hotspot
several us (at least on verizon) seem to be able to do it just with toggles. Those with other carriers let us know if it works for you...
Thanks for the info,
I have tried the widgets option but still no go.
Still getting the T-Mobile Hotspot signup page...
anyone able to get this working?
I've also noticed this to be annoying. My HTC Sensation would tether no problem on the same data package. Now T-Mobile has it locked down somehow. Hmm.

Do this, go to Google Play and download (WiFi Tether For Root Users) open the app go to settings, 1) Change device-Profile to Generic ICS. 2) Change Setup-Method to Netd (master). Now go back and click on the big WiFi icon to start tethering, soon as the system finds the device pull down the notification and authorize it, make sure the Access-Control is enabled., your're all set, good luck.

I guess this will encourage him to ROOT, one of the perks you get being rooted.
T mobile can be a real pain in the ass with blocking tethering. I don't believe the app matters best way I know to get around it is to change the user agent on the computer and do not use internet explorer. I believe chrome and firefox have plugins for that.
I tried FoxFi on a non-rooted stock t999, doesn't work. Sends out the wifi signal, but the computer never actually connects to it. Keeps giving me some kind of error when trying to connect to wifi.
Using the built in tether wifi option, I can connect to the wifi being supplied by the sgs3, but any web activity takes me to the t-mobile hotspot sign up page.
OP use firefox, not chrome to tether. seriously.
and you can try downloading the 'tether' app from the clockworkmod website. google it.
I tether my nexus 7 from my sgs3 with foxfi and its really simple. Just make sure u install pdanet on the device u want to tether. I'm doing a tether with Bluetooth.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
On my S3, I only need to turn on tethering and it works. I small on t-mobile S3 not rooted and I don't have any additional tethering on my plan.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Very interesting, i use wifi tether for root users and after using for awhile i get a push message saying i need to stop tethering or it will be blocked, and then i recieve another saying it has been blocked, its a push message so im wondering if t-mobile has a app hidden inside the touchwiz rom to make sure it cant tether... sigh
Hi!
I just installed Foxfi app. on my phone. I noticed there is also an app. called "Foxfi AddOn" and according to the description it provides some optional features to the Foxfi application.
Has anyone installed this app? The reason I am asking this question is because I noticed that by agreeing to install this app., personal information is accessed ("general info about what you are doing with the phone, potentially including personal or private info").
The above quote I got when I press to "install" the app., so I would appreciate any feedback/advice on installing this app. Thanks!

SM-t217a 4.4.2 and free tethering no root

I have the sm-t217a that has been updated to 4.4.2. I lost my root and thus my free tethering, until now.
There is no root available for this device yet. I was able to use the paid version of foxfi and pdanet and could usb and Bluetooth tether, but that takes a cord and Bluetooth is slower.
I wanted to post that I was able to get free tether by going into the app manager, go to all apps, find the ATT all access app and turn off, voila I could wifi tether.
Now I will say I am using the Straight talk data plan that uses the ATT network, so I am not sure that if you actually using ATT account that this will work, but it is worth a try.
If anyone has this rooted please let me know, I miss xposed.

it is under settings, more options, if you turn off the att all access it will not show up, which is the point so you can bypass if your are trying to do it for free.
You will need foxfi for att and I would pay for the key as the free version does have a data limit.

wifi tether problem

hi everyone. did a search, didnt find what i was looking for. i've been using my wifi hotspot so much that i use up my date half way before the month ends every month. and my carrier doesnt have an option to increase hotspot data. so i decided to root my phone and try the wifi tether apps that are available in the play store. they work, but not as good as the stock wifi hotspot that my phone comes with. it doesnt even compare. is there an app that i dont know about or rom that works as good as the stock wifi hotspot on my phone? also the usb tether works, i have no issues with that. the problem is, i wanna use the wifi for my smart tv and xbox one, but they dont support the usb tether that i'm using with foxfi. thanks in advance. i'm using nexus 5x android 7.0 build n5d91L.
I dont know if im right, but PureNexus ROM has unlocked WIFI Hotspot. Im on this ROM but i cant test it for You (unlimited data on hotspot).

I see you mentioned a November build installed in your device. If you want to try PureNexus, be aware that ROM uses the December build which is based on official Android 7.1.1 and not 7.0 like the one you mentioned. You would need to update your bootloader, radio and vendor accordingly to avoid issues with that ROM. How-tos are everywhere, including in that thread (use Search).
I don't quite understand your original problem, since your WiFi hotspot tethering was working with the built in app. Do you have limited tethering but otherwise unlimited data? Did the PureNexus ROM hide this tether usage somehow?
I'm having this same issue, my phone won't even turn hotspot on with FoxFi. Its a brand new phone but decided to go ahead and root it.
Trying to find an app or build.prop line that will re-enable hotspot on Android 5.1.1.
