I am not sure if my question will make much sense. I know how to flash official firmwares, and also how to flash custom ROMs via CWM.
I have been running 4.0.A.2.368 (UK Generic) for a while now, with [email protected] #3 kernel and of course root. I did this because for the time being I wanted an experience as close to the original as possible, but with added advantages.
I now want to update to 4.0.2.A.0.42, but without
a) Formatting my internal memory and thus losing my game installations and applications (a lot of which were purchased from the Store)
b) Losing root access
I know I am supposed to flash 4.0.2.A.0.42 via Flashtool, but I wonder if this will wipe the memory and thus cause me to lose above mentioned data.
Is there any way to update without losing my data, files, installed applications and games?
Many thanks for the help in advance.
You can flash via flashtool and still keep user data.
Also flashing new roms via CWM is not a good idea, there is no way atm to flash basebands (radio) via recovery so you would be stuck with older baseband.

Great! As about root.. Do I simply re-root the device?
I don't suppose I have to re-lock the bootloader to update via Flashtool, right?

Just make sure you untick the box that says "wipe user data". You can use flashtool with an unlocked bootloader. And as you have an unlocked bootloader, you can re-root by either flashing doomlords kernel, or by flashing the rootedupdate.zip in binarys CWM thread

i search over and over and i check the site daily to find any way too root officially global world.431 without re flash (ready to root firmware)
i need root to slove small internal memory problem
any way id like to ask what is the disadvantages of flashing (ready to root firmware)?
and if i flash (ready to root firmware), can i update my mobile normally via witless?
there are no disadvantages, it's just the normal 4.0.4 FTF with the 4.0.3 kernel.
just don't flash the FR because tether doesn't work from some reason.
and for sure there is no differnt with 4.04 kernel and 4.03 kernel?
and if u have the rom, how is the battery with you?

read the tutorial carefully, after you done rooting you need to flash the 4.0.4 kernel

rite, i didnt notice that
thanks alot
I'd just like to say hi to everyone, my name is Mick.
I have an Arc S, originally running GB, but currently running ICS, build 4.1.A.0.562 which I updated to via SEUS a while ago.
I've used DoomLord's one click method to root the phone, have CWM installed, and I've been happy with it since, but I've now decided to see about installing a custom rom.
I've done a lot of reading on here about locked and unlocked boot loaders, and mine's locked so a bit restrictive in what I can do I gather.
What I'd like to know is, a lot of the roms for locked bl's, say based on, or must have, the .587 build, but mine is the earlier .562.
What is the best way to proceed?
Can I flash the .587 kernel with flashtool as I've read that the stock, signed kernels can be flashed on locked bls. Is this right, and does flashing a stock .587 kernel affect rooting?
Any help, or links to whatever I haven't found yet, would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Mick.

First, .562 update is crap. Sony released a crappy 4.0.3 update, better update if you can.
Then installing stock firmware before installing a custom ROM is not necessary.
Yes, there is difference in .562 and .587 kernels. Apparently, .562 kernels have a security hole in it, which can be used for rooting, however .587 kernels don't have it anymore and you will have to install older kernel to root and then install newer kernel back.
Yes u can flash .587 kernel using flashtool & this will not effect on root... But I will suggest u to update ur phones firmware to .587 (.562 is full of bugs), root it & install cwm then flash stock based custom roms which supports locked bootloader..

It does. 4.1.A.0.562 kernel has a security hole in it, which is used to root via DooMLoRD's method. .587 kernel has that hole patched and that root method does not work.
Thanks for the replies.
Ok, so this means that I can use flashtool to flash the .587 kernel, and then whichever rom afterwards.
I have tried flashing roms with the .562 kernel, and they do work, but I get odd glitches.
The Walkman app in Zelly Cream 2.0 for instance says it has unexpectedly stopped whenever I click on My Music, and the Ultimte HD rom is really good, but the native Movie player won't work and does the same whenever I click on a video.
Each app works ok on one rom, but not on the other.
At the moment I've got the Zelly Cream rom installed and just disabled the Walkman, so had to download another player.
So far I've not had any issues with boot loops or anything, but I have been wiping properly before installing.
I have got a stock .587 kernel I found on here, so I'll try flashing that and see if it's any better.
It's a shame the boot loader is locked, but I've also read that removing the sim lock can fix this.
Thanks again for the info. :good:
587 kernel
Sorry, has anyone got a link for a generic .587 kernel as when I search, the ones that come up have been modified in some way, and my boot loader is locked.
Thanks.
Got it
Ah, it's ok, I think I've found it.
The first one I downloaded was reproting LT15 in Flashtool, so after a bit more searching found it here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1838830
Should be ok.
Just download the whole ROM, but choose only kernel to install.
Sent from LT18i with custom firmware by myself.
Your phone's not covered under warranty anymore, so why don't you try unlocking the bootloader? Would barely take a few minutes.
Hi, Flash new .587 firmwar..... flash .562 kernel only.....root phone.....flash original .587 kernel only.....this video helped me a lot.

Hi i got this sony xperia ion.
I unlocked the bootloader last night and when i tried to update to latest software version (6.2.B.221 i think) it showed me an error whivh i figured cause of unlocking bootloader.. so i gave up on updating with pc companion. Now im tring to just flash the custom rom and kernel but it says i need rooted device to flash.. so i searched about rooting ion and found one thread that i need to flash prerooted kernel.. one that im tring to flash is .elf file and it's stock kernel, prerooted, has cwm and init.d and says (no OC) but will i still be able to use apps that requires rootd device like root explorer, cpu manager after i flash latest firmware and flash new custom rom and new kernel?
I know you cant understand what i wrote.. so..
My situation
I unlocked bootloader before i update it to latest firmware.
Im going to flash kernel that is prerooted, has cwm, init.d. in order to flash latest firmware
After flashing latest firmware, im going to flash custom rom and kernel that is in (rom).zip file
Will i be still able to use superuser? Or like apps that requires rooted device?
It's my first time using sony devices.. please help this nooby noob
and i appreciate any tips or stuff like that will help me thru finally custom rom
(Sorry about my bad English)
Hi guys
I m new here, i dont know much about this stuff.
So i have lg g3 d851 t mobile version which is previously unlocked (i dont know which tool was used). The problem is the phone lack some base app like radio and update center ect and its unstable, so i want to flash it.
Phone statue:
+ android version 4.4.2
+ rooted
+unlocked
+bloatloader i think locked
+stock recovery
My question is
Can i install costom rom without losing the unlock? If no can i install stock rom like 5.1 or even 6.0? do i need install 5.1 before 6.0 ?
Pls help
The bootloader isn't unlockable per se. You obtain a custom recovery by downgrading to an earlier android version with vulnerabilities you can exploit to obtain root access. Then you use the root access to flash a custom recovery. You can do whatever you want (whether it be flashing a custom ROM or a stock ROM through lgup), you can always re-root. You'll never lose the unlock since technically it doesn't exist.
With that said, since the phone already has root, you can flash twrp recovery using terminal or adb and flashing any ROM from there. You can also flash the latest stock ROM on a PC using LGUP or lg flashtool or in recovery using the stock ROM by mesa.
Read through the guides here and decide what exactly you want to do based on your preferences. You can always re root if you lose it in the process.
As a side note, there's no radio app for this model as there's no FM transmitter in this device.
Hope this helps.
