I'm currently running CM-10-20130217 with ns4g-1029 and I'm trying to get wireless tethering working and not having any luck. I probably will upgrade to 10.1 soon (installed it early release and it was a little buggy for me so I switched back to 10.0).
Do I need to upgrade the kernel to support tethering?
What app do you recommend for tethering with this config?
If I upgrade to the latest CM10.1 what modem/kernel do I need to run to support tethering? Same app question for tethering.
I did some searching and couldn't find a specific answer on this.
Thanks
Wifi tether report
I just tested wifi tether on a 4.2.2 based rom, Slim Rom, and it works.
I believe Slim Rom is based somewhat on CM 10.1, so 10.1 should work also.
I just used built-in wifi tether option on slim rom.
I'm also on NS4G modem, but with latest EFFSI kernel for NS4G.
If your thinking of switching up to 10.1, please know that bluetooth will be more flaky, but still work.
Otherwise, 10.1 is way better in many respects.
Also, you may want to consider going Slim Rom instead of CM 10.1.
It's more stripped down, with great battery life, and the extras it includes are actually useful.
I've tried quite a few Epic roms, including 10.1 nightlies, and it's my favorite.
You could check out the slim rom development thread before deciding

I have been searching the forums for AOSP ROMs for the Galaxy S2 and i can't seem to find any. I find a few ROMs that have some of the AOSP apps built in, but i'm looking for a strait up AOSP ROM. Is there a such thing for the T-Mobile Galaxy S2?
I do need to use WiFi Calling, i have no reception at my house at all so I need this feature working! But other then that i don't care if video recording doesn't work, if the ROM is GB or ICS.
I miss the HTC device ROMs there were always more options!
Any information would be helpful!

Aokp cm7 cm9 are all aosp and available for the t989. Both cm can be found in the dev section aokp needs to be downloaded from goo manager, which is an app. None of them have wifi calling however. No one has yet been able to figure out how to put wifi calling in a rom that isn't tw based because its more than just an app, its baked into the rom itself. I wouldn't count on it being developed any time soon either, but its not out of the realm of possibility. So to sum up: if you want wifi calling you have to use a T-Mobile rom, if you want aosp, you can't have wifi calling
That is what i was starting to think! sucks! Thanks for the reply!

I survived rooting an S3, flashing CM9 and then having wi-fi work fine that day but cease functioning the next. I tried CM10 but that didn't fix the wi-fi issue. I went back to stock 4.1.1 LK3 and wi-fi works. Are the wi-fi drivers in CM not that good? Nothing I tried could get connectivity after the first day. Reflashing didn't fix the issue.
I can live with relatively minor bugs in ROMs, but not when it comes to wi-fi. What else should I be trying? I'm thinking of LiquidSmooth, but am open to suggestions. What I did love about CM was how fast it booted and ran.
One person here whose opinion I highly respect uses Task ROM and Lean kernel. Anyone else like those?
Well there are many different roms out there I personally run Jellybam which is a mixture of AOKP, CM10, and Paranoid Android. Also, it's pretty stable i have the occasional Wifi drops but you just have to turn it off and turn it back on and I have problems with the Paranoid Android part of it. From what i know Cyanogenmod has moved on to 10.1 which is 4.2.1 and i think AOKP has move on to 4.2.1 and i think they are still working on some bugs. But i haven't been on their threads in a while.
But i heard that AOCP The Collective and Jedi Invasion are stable roms just to name a few (don't know 100%) but i would read up on their threads before doing anything as to be 100% sure before flashing. For example I read that someone had problems with Jedi Invasion 2.1 but 2.0 worked great for them, etc.
i had horrible wifi on any rom i tried. it onky worked on stock for me when i turned off wifi power saving. however the newest aokp from task, android 4.2 has fixed my problems and i no longer experience problems.

I find it odd that wi-fi is such an issue given how common and universal this technology is. Plus wi-fi is such an essential service, far more than many other features. Appreciate the replies, which have given me new ROMs to research more closely.

Ive had wifi issues on all cm 10 and aokp based roms. I havent had any wifi issues on the newer cm 10.1 or aokp 4.2 or any of the touch wiz based roms. Another option is use an app called smart wifi toggler it seems to work pretty well and is free on the play store.

Well, I'm looking at Task & Ktoonsez AOKP Task 4.2.1 as a first-choice potential ROM, so your positive remark about wi-fi is good to read.
I do use the wi-fi toggle you noted, but it won't overcome a functional wi-fi issue in a ROM...at least for me.
Out of curiosity, do these hybrid ROMs run themes for CM, AOKP and others or only one specific type?
Task and Ktoonsez is a great ROM really stable. I was using it for a while but I am actually running Liquid Smooth RC9 right now and its my ROM of choice. I personally like the vanilla experience you get from Liquidsmooth. The Liquid Splasher is incredibly customizable, and no issues with wifi whatsoever.
Good luck!

I read LS thread and was concerned about posts regarding different RCs. Some love RC7, others RC9, and there seemed to be a lot of things waiting to be fixed. No? I'm probably going to try the TK ROM first, but am keeping an eye on LS because I have a second S3 that I will root and flash after first one is ready for daily use. The wi-fi issue is most important to me, so I'm interested that you have had no problems on your S3.
Is Liquid Splasher the launcher?
Does LS support AOKP/CM10 themes?
Liquid Splasher is the internal customizer to set a various array of settings and configurations, there is a huge amount of options so kind of hard to give you a detailed listing of what it can do. LS Launcher is stock nothing special about it but you can always just install nova if you prefer nova.
Yes I have been able to run AOKP themes.
Heres the unofficial thread about LS http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2012791
I am sure you will really like Tasks ROM its really good from the experience I had. But for me personally I am just having a lot more success with LS in regards to performance and app compatibility, and battery life. It seems everyone has a little different experience with custom ROM`s so I can only speak for myself that LS has been rock solid for me.
Hope that helps somewhat.
Yes, your remarks have been very helpful. Always good to read comments from someone with experience with these things. Most appreciated.
hello! my brother rooted my phone last week before he left out of the country and he left me his xda info to ask if i had any questions since i wont be able to contact him much. my question is, does anyone know of a rom i can use that has functioning wifi tether? we have the unlimited plan but no tether and i would really love to use it. my brother installed darthstalker x and im kinda bored of it (its a great rom dont get me wrong). im just looking for something like an aokp? or aosp? idk what the difference is.. and if possible, maybe with the same motion functionality like on the original s3 rom. i like sliding my hand across to screen capture and all that haha. thanks for all the help!
ps he also installed a different kernel? idk what that means except that he said that i'll get better battery life, thats always a plus
If you want motion functions then you need to stay with a touchwiz based ROM, I think most of them have the free tether cooked in by now, it should say in the first post or changelogs if it does or not

CyanogenMod 10.1 4.2.2 latest nightly works great, including encrypted WiFi hotspot as long as you flash a kernel with it. Stock Cyanogen kernel breaks encryption. The kernel I am using right now is LeanKernel, and everything works great.
Another great ROM is PACman 4.2.1, which is a combination of ParanoidAndroid, AOKP, and CyanogenMod. I stopped using it, cause the settings are kind of a mess at the moment with most of the AOKP options being blank, but again, everything works on it, including encrypted Hotspot, and Bluetooth streaming. I like this ROM mostly because of the ParanoidAndroid settings that let you change the screen density, and per app density. This one does not need another kernel to get the hotspot working.
Here are some links:
CyanogenMod 10.1
LeanKernel
PACman ROM
Oh, and some info on tethering....T-mobile blocks it on PC's using pretty much any ROM, but you can spoof it with a browser UserAgent change and you should be good to go.

I have cynogenMod 10.1 nightly build 20130213 and LeanKernal 2.4. Still couldn't get secure wi-fi hotspot running. Any advice? What am I doing wrong?
update: got my t-mobile samsung s3 running SECURED wi-fi hotspot. :good: ...
I used cynogenMod 10.0 stable version, released on 2012-11-13
Now I'm going to test out other stuff, like making phone calls, call qualities...etc. The most important feature for me is the secure wi-fi.

You went back to a 4.1 build, wifi tether worked fine back then.
If you want 4.2.2 with encrypted wifi, try the latest CM10.1 nightly with LeanKernel 2.6. That combo works perfect for me.
Hey guys, I should be getting the Incredible as a play phone in a couple weeks, and I'm just wanting to get a consensus of the Roms and Kernels for this phone.
I currently have the Droid Charge add my daily driver, and I am (slightly) experienced in rooting and ROMs. Currently the Charge only has one Rom going for it, and one Kernel that has more or less been abandoned.
The ril or Radio Interface Layer was never released for our phone, so development is limited. We will never have an official CM, AOKP, or AOSP ROM, which is why I am getting this once to play on.
From the looks of it you guys have almost all of these, but I'm not sure which are the most functional, or which ones are JB/ICS. I would prefer a JB/ICS Rom, as I haven't been able to play with them much, but functionality odds a big deal breaker for me.
All this being said, what do you all think? Which Roms/Kernels should I try when I get the phone?
Note: this phone will be a Wi-Fi only phone, so Data is no biggy. It will be in Airplane Mode most of its life span with me.
Thank you all! I look forward to becoming an active member, and maybe even a Themer if I decide to pick it back up.

The most stable roms seem to be CM7 and GB MIUI however I have used the last version of AOKP ICS, tiny's CM10.1 & zachf's JB 4.1 PAC Man rom with good success. Mostly everything works on AOKP ICS with some add on packages. CM 10 & 10.1 & the PAC Man rom have some issues mostly camera or video play back related.
edit: If you want a sense rom then try Touch of Blue. It's the only one being actively developed & is based on the Incredible GB factory rom.
Here is a thread link to a discussion of droid incredible users favorite roms & how they've made them work for them.

I'd recommend either one extreme or the other - Touch of Blue (GB 2.3.4 / Sense 1.0) or Tiny's CM 10.1 (JB 4.2.2). And unless you need/really want a good video camera, go with CM 10.1. Be sure to read the OP of Tiny's CM 10.1 ROM thread as well as the OP of his Q&A thread.
Hello, I am wondering what is the newest most advanced ROM that has T-Mo's Wi-Fi calling?
I ask because there was a ROM that stated it in the title but no longer seems to do so
I also assume there are a bunch of great ROMs out there that support it and don't adverstise it
Lastly, is there a zip/apk we can flash onto any ROM? I know this used to exist but didn't always work
Any help would be much appreciated
I'm asking because I have been away for a while
I had found this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2142932
Any info on the ability to flash Wi-Fi Calling onto any ROM would be my main request
Info on great Wi-Fi Calling ROMs would be a close second
Thanks

Embrio is a very nice rom. I'm partial to Jedi Mind Trick V4/5. Its a great TW ROM that has the WIFI calling you desire. It is in JB 4.1.2 However if you like to be able to skin your ROM how you like check out AvatarROM. It also has WIFI calling as well. It has a theme engine which you can use to employ themes that are available in-rom to download, or pick a theme from the market. It runs 4.2.2. Both are stellar ROMs and run very fast. And FYI. If you require a ROM that can use WIFI tether, JMT does the job well. Even uses the stock tether app too. (Take that T-mo.)

Both ROM's support custom kernels. I am using the most recent kernel build from elbermu, which is the TW_1.02 for JMT. Does a great job. Supports Kernel tuner and TweakMod. Just make sure you are using the correct version kernel for the correct ROM build (i.e 4.1.2 with the proper 4.1.2 kernel. I learned the hard way) Also GApps packages.

When I loaded Avatar up, I had to turn WIFI calling off I believe. IDK. I don't run it as a daily driver ATM. But I can tell you that JMT does. Thats my daily driver. Works like a champ. WIFI calling works, but I don't use it much. Sorry if I misinformed you earlier about Avatar and WIFI calling. The new version might not have it.
