I could swear my shorter cable charges. Much quicker. Is this a well known am I deluded.

Doesn't seem like it would make a difference.
The longer cable might be a crap one which is why it's charging slower
The physics would say that a shorter cable has lower resistance (proportional to length) so that it could theoretically charge quite a bit faster.
The gauge (AWG) of the USB Cable often makes a bigger difference. Thicker wire (lower AWG) can charge faster. I have a long and thin cable that is limited to less then 500mA, no matter what kind of USB port I plug it into. I measured the current using CurrentWidget (free in the play store)
My thick short cable is from an external hard drive. It charges very fast and about half the length of all the others.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
If the cable is a good quality, not crap from the dollar store, then it may charge faster. Length will have nothing to do with it. Unless you have a crazy long cord, like 200‘, length will not matter.

Every cable longer than 5' that I've tried, has always delivered a slower charge.
And I've tried some high quality 10' cables that flat out sucked.
I only use OEM Samsung cables for anything, just because I've had horrible luck with aftermarket cables. Some work fine, but too many have delivered a slow charge or flaky syncing.
Same problem here with longer usb cables.
I have been looking for a longer cable ( around 2 meters or 7' ) for a while, have tried 3 or 4 from ebay and they all sucked. Most of them would charge very slowly (around 100ma when connected to PC) and the PC/windows would not recognize the device so i couldn't even sync.
I even tried one OEM samsung cable and that synced ok but the charging was still around half speed of the original cable that came with the device.
If anyone knows of a proper cable at least 7' (preferably sold on ebay) let me know.
thanks
Hi!
This cable is tested and very good (see link). Tried a lot of cables from ebay. Some of them would not charge while using the phone. Agree that cheap cables have to be as short as possible to charge fast. This cable charges fast, and is even longer than the oem samsung cable. A little on the thick side, but seems extremly durable. Bought two of them myself.

Hit thanks if I helped you!
Thanks for the suggestion but i mentioned at least 7FT, maybe 6FT would be enough.. but 4FT is still too short, that's just 1FT more than the original cable.

Found this. It's a Micro-USB to USB for syncing or, when plugged into the AC Adapter that comes with the Galaxy Note, charging. Anyone tried it out, as I find the standard cable to short to stretch from the mains plug to a chair for me to still use my phone? After all, since I use my device heavily like a tablet when around the house, I end up charging at least once a day.

cable by itself could work, not sure about the retractability though - used to have something similar, and surprisingly enough, after several in-out cycles, the thing stopped rolling (the cable by itself survived)
Poor quality, just read the reviews.

I've used 'em for my sensation, and they work, but they're only about the same length as a standard cable. One of the two I had has broken.
Just get some spare batteries. 0 to 100 takes ten seconds.

Get a long micro-usb cable instead of the retractable and use that, you can find some that are 5m and longer.

This the best advice you are going to get.
Buy one of these external battery chargers too, and your Note was almost never need to be plug in itself.
I got mine with 3 additional battery for little more than this. Whilst the batteries aren't as good as the original, they aren't too bad at all. Now though I use some 3250mAh "Gold" batteries - I don't believe the capacity, but they do at least perform as well as the original.

Dave
Could anyone link me to a decently priced, but longer, USB to Micro-USB wire that I can plug into my AC adapter and then into phone. I want one around 4 metres in length, if possible, as I use my tablet like a phone and don't want to have to stop watching a movie because my battery has died.

Seeing as all of my old chargers are for my SGS2 and put out a measly 0.7A compared to the 2A of the note 2 charger, I was wondering if I can use a different USB cable with the note 2 charger and still get the full 2A from it?
The reason I ask is the original USB cable that comes with it doesn't seem to be well thought out and has difficulty staying in if you move the phone about while charging.
Got the same issue. Tried galaxy Nexus cable. And it barely charged several percent.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Most cables should work. But it requires a good quality and moderately thick cable to provide close to 2A without a massive voltage drop.
You could try to shave a little of the excess plastic from the original SGN2 cable, so as to make the connector longer. My phone does not have a problem holding to the USB connector as is, but it seems quite a few other users have some trouble.
If you really need a new cable, try to avoid the cheapest ones. Also don't get one longer than what's needed.

I bought a 3m long cable. Works just as the regular. This cable is about as thick as the original. I would avoid the very thin cables when using the 2Amp charger.
Just a warning... If a cable does not fit, do not make it fit. Mine did not at first. Adjust the "hooks" on the contact by pushing them in slightly. There will be less force needed when connecting and it will still sit more tightly than the original.
Just buy a USB extension cable.
I'm using the original charger with the cable from my Kindle paper white and it seems to charge just fine. What's the advantage of using thicker cables?

I noticed that the Note 2 is a hungry beast. Have it for two days and tried to charge it on my Note 1 craddle with the Note 1 charger. Charged for 6 or so hours but was only at 57% when I took it of. You definitely have to use the 2A charger and mind the cables!
My Note 2 came from Handtec and was in French packaging, and the Samsung 2A charger was a 2 pin version but Handtec had supplied another charger with the UK 3 pins. This works fine but is only 1A and I've been using a range of other micro USB chargers and they all seem to be ok.

I don't think it's fair to say that, at least regarding the chargeing cable. Samsung uses a regular microUSB connector, just like all phones sold in the EU should. It's Apple that insists on proprietary connectors.
The Note II has a large capacity battery (good thing, right?) and Samsung decided to provide it with a power converter capable of chargeing the phone in a relatively short time. It requires a moderately good quality cable to allow a strong current to reach the phone within USB limits, but that's just physics. Not Samsung's fault.
(I do, however, blame sellers of very cheap cables. Buyers are the ones who suffer because the manufacturer decided to shave a cent or two from their costs.)
What I would recommend those that need a longer cable is to get an electrical extension instead.

Besides being physically stronger it can also have slightly thicker treads, allowing a bigger current, with less voltage drop until it reaches the phone. Orginal cable is 23AWG (power) and 30AWG (date). The thinner they get the more voltage drop, the longer they get the more voltage drop. The voltage drop is also affected by the material of the cables... The thickness of the cable may just be stronger shielding or better isolation, so look at the AWG markings and avoid too long cables.
My 3 meter, 24AWG (power) and 28AWG (data), error... sigh... AWG size is opposite towards milimeter... The lower AWG the thicker thread in the cable. The lowest AWG threads on the cable is for charging.

I've got saerm problem, the reason is that the micro usb tip ( the one you insert on the Note 2) is short. It can be easily solved by buying a different cable, or like what I did, I just filed the surrounding plastic to make the metal bit longer. It now latches perfectly with a click !!! Good luck

I did not say there would be extreme differences, but if you want a good quality cable... It does not say what AWG the SGS2 cable has (I find no markings), but the cable is a factor, but a small one, than can be noticeable especially if you have some length on the cable. If you use 1Amp on a 1.8 m 28AWG copper cable there is almost 16% voltage drop. If you double the current you also double the voltage drop. That does not mean that the charging time will be changed much in some cases since there are other factors that affect it too (internal electronics that handles the charging, battery health, the real charge Voltage/Current at the battery leads....).
I just got a high quality cable from Manhattan Products and their website says:
http://manhattan-products.com/en-US/products/9204-hi-speed-usb-device-cable
28 AWG conductors
Shielded
Withstanding voltage: 300 V DC 10 ms
Insulation resistance: 5 MOhms
Contact resistance: 10 OhmsThermal plastic casing.
What's the AWG of the original cable? Is my cable's awg for the data or current?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 2
Orginal is 23AWG power and 30AWG data. You can read it the cable actually. You even see that it has dual commons.
If it has dual sizes the bigger size is power (bigger is strangely enough a lower AWG). If it only mentioned one size then it is used both for data and power.

Look for a charger that's rated at least 1A (1000mA) and is not from a generic manufacturer. Read: Samsung, Apple, Motorola, HTC, HP, Amazon. I personally do not like others. Watch out for fakes, esp if you buy an Apple charger.
Buy a 28/24awg or thicker micro USB cable. Monoprice (can be found on Amazon) has some and I believe Medialink cables are 24/20awg, which is even better. Remember at least 24awg on the voltage carrying lines, a lower number is better.

You really gotta search some more. Amazon has GREAT cables, but mediabridge is probably the best. I have a few of these myself. How are you saying that you need longer cables? Mediabridge has a 10ft cable and you said you only need a 8ft one? Also, rapid charging is mostly a concern of the charger itself and not the cable (unless the cable quality is absolute crap).
Yeah it may be easy to find long cables, but it's not so easy to find ones that charge as well/fast as the short, authentic HTC ones. I'd also be interested in this - did anyone already buy and experience a quickly charging, long cable?

Placebo. Wires don't charge faster or slower. You might have a better connection or so with a gold plated connector, but it's no different if the wire is from china or if it's an authentic HTC one. There is LITERALLY no difference between the original HTC wire, the mediabridge 10ft wire, 6ft wire, or the coiled 2ft wire all of which I own at least when we're talking about charging time.

There is a difference. My eBay 6ft wire charges about 3-4x slower than the authentic HTC one. 8-9hrs vs 2-3hrs is no placebo.
My bad, I should clarify. There is no difference between real, quality usb wires. Like I said, you brought a crappy cable from eBay. You can google this if you're so inclined. There's no difference between two real usb cables. Also, "real" usb cables often have the usb certification logo on them.
Tldr; buy from a reputable seller that has good reviews. Should be little to no difference in charging.
Protip: Don't buy usb cables longer than 16ft
That's better - I didn't know there was such thing as USB certification. Basically don't trust eBay unless the product is genuine/expensive. Better off going to some big-name company like best buy.
Years ago people were wholly convinced that every and all cables are the same, which is just not true. Somehow some knock-off cables have some slow charging wires or whatever. Don't know how or why, but just a warning that if you buy some random cheap cable off eBay, it might not work nearly as well as a genuine product.

Technically speaking, it all depends on the materials they used and how the wires are enclosed. I would say most of the cables you see are indeed pretty much the same, but I generally do buy things from eBay. It could've just been a fluke. I haven't had to change or buy new usb cables in a while, but in no way would I recommend getting a big-name wire like monster or whatever from your local electronics shop. Amazon should be fine if you read the reviews.
I also recommend Monoprice.com's cables. Variety of cable lengths and great customer service. No point to risk and sift through random eBay or Amazon offerings.
Monoprice 10ft 28/28AWG cable. Using the stock HTC charger. No difference in charging time.

Like I said, placebo. All certified wires that charge + usb transfer should have very minimal differences. You either get crappy cables, or you don't. The only problem I've ever had is the connectors falling apart. Never had a usb cable that charged my phone slower using the same adapter and I've had quite a few different cables from eBay, Amazon, etc.

I have been having trouble recently with my galaxy s3 charging extremely slowly. Every since the OEM cable broke, I have tried to find replacements that charge at 1amp. The only cable that does this is the monoprice premium micro usb cable 6ft, but it breaks quite easily. I have also tried the 28awg 6ft monoprice cables, which were pathetic and charged at 100ma. This was all plugged into the OEM 1a wall charger fyi.
I have heard that the 24awg cables with ferrite core charges at a full 1 amp because the cables are thicker, but what I don't understand is that the OEM and premium monoprice cables both charge at 1100mah but are really thin compared to even the 28awg cable. The OEM and monoprice cables don't have specifications printed on them. I had always thought that generic usb cables were the same as OEM cables, and would charge at the same speed, unless there's something wrong with my micro usb port or phone.
I have tried looking for solutions but the answers on most forums are people asking why their phone charges slow when it is plugged into a usb port, and everyone just replies that the usb port output is limited to 500mah, but I am using the oem ac adapter and it's still slow. Only the premium monoprice cable charges full speed but its very poor in quality, the rubber cable separates from the plastic micro usb head, and it breaks. I have had 3 of these premium cables break in less than a weak and only 1 of them works, for now.
Is it my phone's micro usb port? I tried charging it using CM10.1 as well as Touchwiz 4.1.2, but they all charge slowly from the generic cables so it can't be the rom. I don't remember having any of these problems when I first bought the phone on ICS, and I don't see many posts on slow charging.
Is there a cheap, reliable cable that charges at a full 1 amp out there? Most people I've seen had suggested monoprice cables but their 6 foot micro usb cables have changed recently and are really, really bad. I guess the ferrite core cable might work, but I have yet to try it, and I am not fond of the idea of a thick 24awg cable and a big ferrite core sticking out of my phone.
First of all, do you have Galaxy Charging current app? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abmantis.galaxychargingcurrent.free - I think it's free for N2 and S4, but you have to pay $0.99 for S3 (I use it for free on my N2, but a buddy of mine had to pay to use it on his S3). That app will give you an idea of what's going on. You can also check out Charging Doctor I reviewed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451375
Second, charging speed is a combination of both a charger and a cable. The only way to guarantee full 1A/2A output without high resistance which contributes to a drop of charging speed is to use thick wired cables like 24AWG as you correctly pointed out. But with wall chargers - just because they state 1A you will NOT actually get 1A due to efficiency losses. You know how your charger gets warm? That due to AC/DC conversion inefficiency which results in drop of speed and release of energy in a form of a heat. I personally don't trust labels on cheap chargers and also over the time even an efficiency of a trusted converter will go down. I have reviewed a lot of Anker batteries and chargers (check out review link in my signature), and those are the one I highly recommend.
What I would recommend getting one of these trusted 2A chargers and use 24AWG cable and check it with Charging Current app. If you are still seeing a very slow charging speed it means your micro usb connector is wearing off or loosing a contact with a main printed wiring board (pwb) inside of the phone.
