(Q). Help

Ok so I've been looking for a rooting method for my Kindle Fire( non hd ) with 10.3.0 fw
you mention the forum, ive looked in it. but im not able to find a single place which provides a method for that. so my question is this: is there a working method to root a Kindle Fire (nonHD) 10.3.0 fw without a factory cable? im assuming my KF is a 2nd gen model (it is, isnt it?). if so, please explain or provide a link for that.
also, every place i see says : ** ONLY FOR 1ST GEN. TRY FOR 2ND GEN AT YOUR OWN RISK **. it says so on the TWRP help forums and even the KFU help forums. what do i do??
Im not new to using the downloading apk method to get apps, but off lately whenever i download an apk from silk browser onto my KF and the notification pops that the download is complete, i click on the notification which is what you do to install that apk. but when i hit the notification, *nothing* happens. absolutely nothing. the notification disappears and the app is not installed. why? :/
regarding the problem with apks, i even mailed it to myself and tried downloading it from the stock email app, but no, even from the email app, the APK (as an attachment) refuses to start downloading
any help is appreciated

In of the posts in that forum, dev Hashcode has posted what seems to be a quite successful 4.2.2 stock ROM by the looks of the comments. but i really dont understand the entire process cause im new to flashing etc

I don't think you understand my point, brother.
I said you are in the wrong forum. This is the 1stGen KF forum.
Your device is 2ndGen.
I can write up an instructions but again, it's for 1stGen since I don't have the 2ndGen.
Follow instructions for device A to device B is UNWISE.
You don't want to brick your KF and you know I don't want indirectly bricking your device.
My suggestion once again: go to the 2ndGen forum and ask for help, I'm sure there are many experts there will help you through.

I rooted mine on 10.5.0 a couple weeks ago using Bin4ry's root. It seemed to work fine after that, but I didn't run it too long before attempting to put custom android on it. Ended up flashing the wrong boot loader and then replaced the motherboard. The New one was 10.5.0 as well and rooted using bin4ry then flashed correct boot loader. It's running android like a champ now. No more limited o.s. and haven't run into any issues as of yet.

Can you put up instructions please

I've been trying to figure out how to root my Kindle Fire 2 Gen for a few weeks now....can there be anyway you could like put a video how to do it so people don't get bricked devices and for beginners it would save a lot of people's time and money don't you think i think it would be fair to everyone if they were able to have this info on what software to use and what boot loader who else agrees because rooting devices is a open source process which should be shared with all like i said it would be great to know how to do this process if you can do thank you

I just went by the following guide...

Followed it exactly as its posted and it worked. The first time I tried I used a different guide and ended up hard bricking to a state that it wouldn't even turn on. Replaced the motherboard with a used one and then followed the guide in the above link and it worked for me. I rooted first using bin4ry then just followed that guide. Then installed a custom android Rom. Make certain of which kindle you have before flashing anything to it.. it's a crappy feeling sitting there looking at a dead kindle. I'm not saying that method will work for everyone on 10.5.0, but I was able to get it to work for mine. First time I've hard bricked a device and it was because I downloaded and flashed a file which was meant for a different model kindle.
Good luck! If it doesn't work then hopefully someone can come up with a more modern method.

I'm not sure. Mine didn't do that. It seems like the thing ran like **** after rooting, but after rooting I just went on with flashing 2nd bootloader and twrp then installing a custom Rom. So honestly I couldn't tell you much more about it... I just got it to work somehow. Sorry, good luck.

I delved into the guts of Bin4ry's Root a little bit. It uses 3 (IIRC) binaries, "getroot", "su" and "busybox" and plays games with remounting blocks as RW and using getroot to put things where you wouldn't normally be able to. It utterly failed for me on the first go because of the new tightened file permissions everywhere in 10.5.0.

I followed it too, and now have custom bootloader & TWRP. I would like to stress a few points:
1) Most of the adb commands didn't work on the first go. What worked for me was typing

in place of

2) DO NOT skip the backup instructions. They saved my butt; they may save yours. A fastboot cable is highly recommended.

3) Before I found "adb root" I skipped Step 3 since I couldn't make it work and figured it might not be essential. Ended up with a bootloop. That was when I needed the fastboot cable and my backup files from when I rooted before the "upgrade" to 10.5.0.
4) I was never able to get to fastboot without a fastboot cable before I discovered "adb root". I suspect

will work, but I haven't tried it.

Can I ask a really stupid, noob question? I've not had any experience with rooting android devices in the past, but my son has a KF2, v10.5, and he'd like me to root it so he can access the play store. I've read a lot of posts on here about the signed roms and so forth, and because I'm new to the topic a lot of it is going over my head. So some questions:
1) I think, from reading here, that these warnings only apply to replacing the default rom on the KF2, to get a more android like shell. Rooting in itself is a prerequisite for doing this, and doesn't have the associated risk - is that right?
2) I should be able to root the device using the steps in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460 ? That would then allow me to install the play store? The fact I'm using 10.5 doesn't impact on this?
2b) How much risk is there in this? I think most of the risk is in applying custom roms, and the advice to get a fastboot cable applies to that rather than simply rooting the device?
3) The latest version is v36, but v30 was mentioned below. Am I better going for the latest version or going with v30

Okay, in case anyone else is interested, it worked fine. I used the new standard method in bin4ry. Worth noting that I was able to run adb commands before starting. If you can't then you need to sort that out first
I've installed the google play stuff now, just trying to log into a google account...

I rooted mime with kingo root with a pc.
Im looking to put gapps on it while leaving it stock. The method I used before was moving google framework and a couple of other things yo /system/app. This no longer works.
I dont have secon bootloder or anything on it anymore. Is there a way anyone knows to just put google play no it, nust being rooted stock?

My stupid Kindle updated before I rooted it and now it keeps failing to root. I've tried binary root and king root with the pc and the app. I'm really irritated about it and even more irritating is how old this device is and the chances of someone fixing the issue being minimal at best. I was gonna use it as a car radio with CM.

QUESTION on how its done,

I've been tweaking other android devices before but flo's process kind of confuses me.
on my android device Skyfire 2.0 a clone copy of Karbonn Tinatium S5 and Blue Studio 5.0 S
The process runs like this
1st. Root Device,
2nd. Install Custom Recovery
3rd. (Optional) Make a Nandroid Backup
4th. Install tweaks or Flash roms,
but while reading here I come across different tutorials also that thing about unlocking bootloader,
so can anyone clear the exact process I have to follow?
The instructions on how every step is done are fine, I can backread on that, just the exact flow of steps I should follow if I want to install a custom ROM,

[HELP NEEDED] Confusion when following the How-To Root the M8S (M8QL_UL)

I have been trying very hard to grasp on this myself, and not post a thread like this but I'm afraid my head is spinning and I'm hoping someone here will be kind enough to help me.
I have owned an M8S for a while and would like to gain root access (mainly so I can use link2sd and expand storage space). I followed many links and threads carefully, but I am nervous to begin any process as the instructions are... vague, I guess. There are many of you who disagree with me I'm sure, but please be patient with me.

I have rooted several android devices before, and I've never been very confused by the process, but this one has left me lost.

I don't have the M8S, but the process looks straightforward (similar to M8, as well as most fairly recent HTC devices):
1) Unlock bootloader via HTCDev.com (go to the website, and its pretty self-explantory)
2) Use fastboot to flash TWRP custom recovery
3) Flash SuperSU and Busybox using TWRP
I'd also add a step before 3 above, use TWRP to make a backup of the stock ROM. Once you have that backed up, anything that happens from step 3 is reversible by restoring the backup.
In fact, everything in the process is totally reversible by RUU, with the exception that the bootloader flag will only every say RELOCKED instead of LOCKED.
Is there a particular question, or step you have a problem with.

Just read and learn as much as you can before doing anything. Don't do anything that isn't form a current, reputable source. Do those things, and you will be fine.

portachking, I am very new to rooting and all that follows it. I would be very grateful if you post back your experiences when you have time, with the challenges you met (if any) and how you solved them...
I read from this page that "When the phone is rooted in changes to the phone are reset on restart". Is this the case for you as well?

Hey guys, i am also new to rooting and have read a lot about it already. I already managed to unlock the bootloader and use twrp to make a full backup. Only from thus point on, i dont know how to actually root it without flashing a custom rom.

2nd Link in the top post describes it (with link to SuperSU).
To root, just flash SuperSU 2.67 in TWRP.

It didnt work.
I did everything exactly as described. I have twrp, open it in fastboot with cmd. When i am in twrp, i clicked install, and installed the supersu beta zip and busybox zip. Still i dont have root access.

I tried it multiple times, from my internal storage and sd card. I have bootloader unlocked, i use fastboot boot twrp version 2.8.6.0 if i remember correctly (not at home at the moment) and clicked install. Then i made sure i install the zip super su and busybox file from the root of the sd card, and tried internal storage as well. From that screen, it seems it installs correctly, but when i reboot and use a rootchecker app, it says im not rooted.
Can someone please help me? Ive read up on lots of posts and watched youtube vids of twrp rooting to see if i did it correctly.

Please confirm what version SuperSU you used.
When flashing SuperSU, it should have given you the option of "systemless root" or "traditional root" (or something along those lines).
If you picked systemless root, it probably won't show up on root checker apps. Seeing as Link2SD is your main reason for root, have you checked that the app works or not?

Newbie! Zenfone 2 now rooted...now what!

I have a zenfone 2 that I have just rooted....so now what?
Basically I wanted to optimise my phone so I am able to disable annoying notifications which are greyed out (although since rooting and checking this it still greyed out) I want to remove bloatware and I would actually like to customise my own android system, starting from a 'vanilla' base where I can build it up myself.
I have also read that I need to install a android recovery programme on asap after rooting.
So sorry about this but I really do need 'stupid' instructions as using hi tech words will just baffle me. lol
I have played around with computers in the past and learned about them so this is the phone stage now!

Hi Kerry,
First thing you should now do after rooting your device would be flashing a custom recovery that is specific to your device (make sure your devices boot loader is unlocked first). This will allow you to make a backup of everything just in case anything were to go wrong, flash custom ROMs and useful zips. You can pick your favorite custom recovery such as Team Win Recovery Projects custom recovery (TWRP), Clock Work Mods custom recovery (CWM) or Philz Touch recovery based off of CWM although personally I would recommended twrp.
There are multiple ways to do this: Using the TWRP/CWM recovery installer from the play store or the more complicated way of flashing it from your computer. If you were to choose to install TWRP from their app on the play store (grant it root permission) you can select your device from the supported device section within the app, pick the latest recovery, hit the install button and let the app work its magic. If all works correctly you can now reboot to recovery and you will see TWRP is installed. Now you should create a backup to be on the safe side and you're good to go!
To best optimize your device I would recommend installing a custom ROM (look up custom ROMs for the Zenfone 2) and install the zip through recovery. (make sure to pick the right ROM for your device and version otherwise you may soft brick your smartphone) Now with a custom ROM you can better optimize your device and fully customize it to your liking. Make sure to look up custom ROM installation instructions for your device for better detail.
As far as removing system apps/bloatware you can use a "root app delete" tool from the play store but be careful what you remove as some applications are required!
Make sure to take your time and be careful when attempting any of these things and be careful what you modify! Just remember that no question is a stupid question as we all have to start somewhere!

I also went ahead and checked the TWRP app and the Zenfone 2 is supported so it looks like your good to go. All devices have a different method for unlocking bootloader (some don't even have locked bootloaders) but this is an official bootloader unlocking method for the Zenfone 2 from Asus itself. I suggest following its directions and you should be able to unlock it this way.

Ok I followed the link but now I am confused. I have version ww_2.20.40.63_201......
Apparently I need a later version. What started off with just adding an APP means me doing other things before I even get to that point (hence the confusion! lol)
I never updated the phone via OTA as I was told it would invalidate my warranty and also I have killed a phone before using that so can you walk me through please...if you have the time....or could I just check if I have it unlocked already??
I haven't even gotten to the part where I create a backup...tee hee

Hi sorry for the late reply, I'm in Canada so it was 2am when I was last talking to you so I went to bed haha. Anyway as far as unlocking the Zenfone 2's bootloader I wouldn't have experience unfortunately as I'm using a Nexus 5. The easiest way to go about this now would be to go to your device specific forum and find a way to unlock it there.
The following way to unlock the bootloader requires you have ADB installed on your PC. This is a guide for installation on Windows :

BTW as you mentioned "updating may invalidate your warranty" things like rooting, installing a custom OS, unlocking the bootloader, installing a custom recovery and other things like that all (in most cases) void your warranty.
