I'm using regular Clockworkmod 5.0.2.6 (not touch, which I've never tried).
I made a bunch of Nandroid backups of my phone. In the past I've restored to some of them and they worked. However, now, whenever I try restoring any of them from CWM, including the ones that worked before, it restores for a while and then it fails stating:
"Error while restoring /data!"
I searched on Google, and the only references I've found to this problem are from Galaxy Nexus owners. For them, just reflashing stock over Fastboot fixes it, so I reflashed stock 2.3.5 over Odin, but the problem remains.
I've also tried doing wipe data/factory reset from inside CWM and that didn't help.
Has anyone seen this before or have any ideas on how to fix this?!
I've discovered the log function under Advanced of CWM. This is what the log is ending with:
tar: can't remove old file data/system/packages.xml: Operation not permitted
#92997temp.dumpefs1.binefs2.binefs3.binS30edt_perms.logzipalign.log.cid.info.psm.info.mac.infoentropy.datbatterystats.binuiderrors.txtusage-20120304usage-20120305usage-20120229usage-20120301usage-20120302usage-20120303packages.xmlError while restoring /data!

I Googled around, and came up with this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1461658
Again, the Galaxy Nexus, with the same problem being this data/system/packages.xml file, and the same solution being Fastboot.
What the heck is going on? Is it possible for us to use Fastboot on our T989's?

You're not alone my friend and I know how to fix it, albiet temporarily, although I haven't actually had the issue in quite some time.
Do a full wipe and clean install of your favourite rom. Once it boots and you let it settle for a few minutes reboot recovery and restore your backup. I have done this method about 12-15 times. The error restoring was accompanied by the inability to reboot my phone at all without having a complete meltdown of every app force closing. It was after the first "bad reboot" I had that I got the error while trying to restore a backup. Hopefully you don't have o go through that. It sucked big time to say the least. Hope this helps

Fixed it, just as you were typing up your response. (Thanks for the tip nonetheless!)
I just ran Darkside Super Wipe on my phone, and after that my restore proceeded perfectly.
I wonder if that's really the key. I don't suppose your favorite ROM is Darkside Digital Warfare, which has Darkside Super Wipe built-in?

Thanks for the fix, same thing happened to me. I had the Optimus T before this so I whent flash happy 12 hours after I unboxed this beautiful phone. I've only had this phone a week, you saved my life lol.
this is just now happening to me, this threat is old but very help full lol
Hey all,
not trying to rehash a "solved" thread but Im having this issue and then some.
First, I tried Darksides wipe script and tried to restore the boot and install a new rom, then install the backup, all to no avail. I tried everything. When you get this error, it seems (at least from my experience) that your only hope is to restore from the stock 4.02 google image and then restore from the nandroid. This first happened to me when my phone dropped and off the couch and the battery came out. It seemed to have corrupted the sdcard, or, at least that was my guess.
However, upon redoing everything to stock and restoring the nandroid (even upgrading to the latest ver of clockworkmod recovery), the problem comes back. Im worried about permeneant damage, possibly, but it makes no sense that I would be able to revert to stock and have it working fine. When I reverted and restored from my nandroid, everything worked flawlessly. Then, today, I turned off my phone (which is a rarity, if ever) and it wouldnt boot back up a few minutes later. Bootlooop and the dreaded "error while restoring data!" message. Im going to revert to stock again and start completely from zip, no nandroid. Its possible that the nandroid is corrupted I suppose but i dont believe it would let me restore it than. Any ideas? Could this be from me leaving my phone on practically all the time, without ever turning it off? or the battery coming out while in use? (which makes sense in theory but I've done a battery pull countless times and never had a problem like this). Would there be a way I could determine, for sure if its a hardware problem? Verizon Nexus (hardware ver 9 I believe) now running JB Sourcery 2.0 (from team sourcery...an AWESOME rom, so I dont believe it to be that.)
Cheers!

plz help me :crying: i am new to this here is my situation i hav a galaxy s4 i9500 i rooted my device 2 days ago and i backed up during the back up it showed no .android_secure found. skipping backup of applications on external storage andalso root error fix . i google it and found its not a big deal so i factory formatted it but when it restored it and restored it all the applications started showing error msg so i formatted sd card and replaced backup folder and tried to back up it showed md5 mismatch so i editted nanroid.md5 with notepad++ and tried to reboot again now its showing recovery data error . what to do?
Hi everyone,
I recently upgraded my cwm from 6.0.1.2 non touch to 6.0.2.3 touch with Odin and when doing a backup it takes a really long time and eventually fails about halfway through backing up /data. I thought maybe the recovery got corrupt or something so I used rom manager to upgrade to 6.0.3.1 non touch and tried again. This time it took longer to backup /system and while backing up data the phone rebooted. I've been running CM10.1 nightlies for quite some time now and kt kernel with no issues, and I always backup before flashing but I need to fix this before i flash anymore nightlies. Anyone else have this issue before? I've been wanting to clean wipe/install my phone for a while now but I just don't have the time right now.
My phone is a d2can on Bell. I know that's relatively irrelevant information but doesn't hurt to mention.
Also I installed the same 6.0.2.3 touch on a GS3 that I just got for my girlfriend and it backs up fine.
Also apparently in attempting these backups it somehow messed up some of my settings. I had a sign in error for gmail which went away as soon as I hit sync now in the Google account, although I had to sign back in to Facebook. It also changed a bunch of my sound settings... Imagine my surprise as I get a Whatsapp message and an Opeth song starts blaring (and also doesn't stop upon checking the message...) lol.
I back up my apps and settings with Titanium Backup so I can easily restore everything when I have a chance to do a clean wipe and install, but how do I fully wipe/reinstall the recovery to fix this backup issue? Maybe I just have to hit the factory reset button in the recovery?

I would download Goo Manager and flash TWRP, forget CWM. If you hit factory reset then you are going to have to go through the clean install process. If I were you I'd flash TWRP and then clean install whatever your into. It'll take maybe 30 minutes to get the rom setup the way you want it and you'll have the piece of mint that everything was cleanly wiped and you have a fresh start.
I guess I can try TWRP. I don't really get why everyone rags on CWM, it works just fine. I was using 6.0.1.2 for about 7 months without a hitch, this is the first problem.
If I did a clean wipe I'd still backup my pictures and my apps from TiBu and restore everything after wiping, it would just take a while. I don't have an external SD so it's all on the internal. I might have some time tonight to try it out.

I would copy your pictures (or any other irreplaceable files) to a computer for safe keeping just in case it hits the fan. Apps are whatever, but you can't retake pictures so I'd back them up somehow; computer, dropbox, etc.
Same Issues on a SG3
I also recently upgraded and have been having the same issues. It doesn't seem to matter whether I enter recovery through or use Rom Manager to enter into in recovery. Each time the back up fails. I had just switch back after having TWRP issues where it back up would not fail but when they were to be use in recovery I would get a message before restarting stating I didn't actually back up the OS. ( I realize it might not be reliant info but I've learn a little to much is better than not at all)
I've noticed it will fail and restart only when I try to back up to my SD card. Yesterday it was giving me trouble by mounting and unmounting repeatedly. I thought I had fixed all the problems after I did a diskcheck and had my computer scan and fix all found errors.
If anyone can link me to a previous version of CWM or help with this back up issue you'll have the OP's and my appreciation.
Thanks in advance.

Are you backing up to an SD card or the phone it's self?

So was your problem fixed by switching to TWRP?
I know when I had tried using TWRP, the issue I was having after back ups, was it would ask me if I was sure I wanted to leave since it said I didn;t install a OS.
Does that help you to find a solution?

Yes.
Like many other sprint users, I experienced serious problems with 5.1.1. This resulted in battery pulls and even a downloading boot. I starting looking into a fix. After flashing about every ROM for sprint N910P on this website, I either result in bootloop or the same problems persist. The problems are as follows:
-Can't boot, so I have to wait ~5 minutes to try again
-Boots straight to downloading, mmc read fail
-Boots fine
-Crashes to black screen around 80-90% battery (back to problem 1)
I cannot figure how to use odin anymore because it fails on nearly every rom I attempt. My reactivation lock is OFF.
I'll try to provide as much detail as I can, but I'm at my wits end with this phone.
Thanks!
If you can Odin OK1 stock tar, there is another root alternative: root stock with Chainfire Auto Root. CFAR has been updated for Android 5.1.1 Note 4
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55865442&postcount=3
Custom ROMs will take longer than 5 minutes to boot initially after flash. TWRP has been known to fail to flash or not properly flash after trying repeatedly to flash wrong tar with Odin or flash with reactivation locked. Which, if any, apply to you? I hope it's not hardware failure...
Sent from my SM-N910P using Tapatalk
Chainfire was going to be my next option. I think the first time I attempted using chainfire through odin, it ended in a bootloop. I haven't tried the update version though. I'll give that a shot.
Is there any way to fix this problem with TWRP (delete it and reflash)?
I'm starting to think its a hardware failure, which would suck because knox is tripped and warranty expired a few days ago anyway I believe.
I downloaded the updated CFAR last night to verify it was updated. It's bundled with Odin 3.10.6 Use the defaults with that for stock OK1 tar.
You should know that CFAR is primarily for rooted stock.
If you want a custom ROM, you may have to use Philz CWM touch recovery for Note 4. TWRP just gets inoperative for some time for some users when tars fail in repeated attempts. Philz' seems to flash where TWRP doesn't if that's the case.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this is most likely a hardware problem. I've had two Note 4's do exactly this. Flashed the stock rom on both with Odin, problems still persisted. It would just get random restarts and sometimes boot into "panic mode", whatever that is. The quality control on these phones is terrible. I baby them and never rooted any of them, yet two of them messed up like that, and all 3 of course have GPS issues. If it worked like it's supposed to it would be amazing, my friend has had one since my first Note with 0 issues, super jealous.
I hope its ok for me to post this here i couldnt find any threads on this issue and i didnt want to make new one just for this one problem so i figure i post it here since the post doesnt really point out to nothing specific and its on note 4 thread so i know ill get faster response than if i posted it in help thread ,but if i'm in wrong please feel free to delete this post at once . With that out of the way heres my issue and i hope theres an easy fix for it i was on latest pl1 build of 6.0.1 stock rooted i got tired of playing pokemon so i decided i want my themed look back so i restored my backup of 5.1.1 cog5 build ,everything works fine but my wifi ,its grayed out and when i try to turn it on it stays in "turning on " possition but it never does come on it eventualy goes back to " to see the list of networks turn on the wifi" .Now my question is is there any way to fix this wifi without flashing srock 5.1.1 i know there used to be fix for it back when i was on note 3 but this was yeaaaaars ago and i dont have that file any more thanks a million.

To fix the WiFi and camera focus, get the bootloader for OG5 from OP in this thread and flash it in Odin.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=66352412
The ones labeled firmware are bootloaders. You don't have to flash the whole OG5 stock tar but you still could. Just make sure the flash restores that bootloader and you should be set.
Likewise, you could still restore a MM backup and restore its bootloader.
I think you should backup your keepsakes in internal memory and wipe internal memory before restoring a backup that crosses Android versions. With backups on extSdCard, you could wipe everything but that but I'd think you could factory reset, wipe internal memory plus the Android folder on extSdCard and have a good transition with the bootloader flash. Otherwise, a factory reset would be the minimum step but may leave some residual information you may not need cluttering your memory along with what you want to keep. Seems I recall some having issues coming back to lollipop from MM without wiping internal memory?
Just curious, do you recall what you wiped going back to lollipop?

Gotcha. Just an old question in the back of my mind from early days of MM. I researched the TWRP thread, the developers recommended a factory reset.
If you've ever noticed internal memory available seemingly smaller than usual, it could be the extraneous folders.
Thanks.

Hey guys Im running stock rooted and for some reason my phone SD is saying im full. I have literally nothing on it. Any ideas?
I tried once to install a ROM but it borked so I went back to a backup I had and it was fine.
Via windows it says my SD only has around 8 gigs used but android is saying 24?!?!?!?
WTF MATE?

thanks, I was about to try and just redo the device with a ROM. Clear cahces and such.
I was actually wrong, every time I go into the phone in windows its giving me different storage use #'s. One time its 8 then 17 then 23 then 9. its weird. I think when I tried dirty flashing it just screwed it all up. I have nothing on the SD I care about really so maybe Ill just back up what I want (TWRP backup and titanium apps) and start from scratch if I Cant solve this.
That might be the best. Try backing up to an OTG then completely wiping and installing a fresh ROM. After backing up apps and such.
ugh IM having trouble using any roms on my 5x. No matter the way I install the phone always boots to "internal problem with device"
Ive tried installing different roms (I only like stock style ones) and the vendor.zip and it just doesnt work for me. Ive gone back to my backup for the moment until I figure this out. Never had these issues with my nexus 5
this is odd now my pattern no longer work since my restore back to my TWRP backup! GOD DAKNIT!
let me do the start patttern fine for android then when unlocing the phone it tells me "pattern needed to start device"
what the hell man!

Try 1st: Completely wipe device, System, data etc. Including Internal Storage and flash a new rom. If that does not fix the issue try flashing stock firmware and start from scratch. Use THIS guide to flash the stock images.
Flash vendor.img that matches your rom base. MMB29Q is the February OTA base. February AOSP roms are based on MMB29U master code but MMB29Q vendor file works fine.

SERIOUS ISSUE!
Bricked the phone!
CRAP, this whole thing went downhill. Can get into TWRP, and get the android crash logo (triangle) was trying to restore back to stock to start fresh and it bombed completely!
Any tips!!!
Been a while since I used ADB or fast etc, but man if I have to relearn I will
I just got done taking the PG1 update and things were working fine except TitaniumBackup had the issue with the writing to SD Card. So I did some research and thought that I could modify the
Code:
/system/etc/permissions/platform.xml
, however when I rebooted the phone, I started getting the dreaded "NetworkSystemProvider" and "Google Play Services" stopped errors every few seconds. I have put the file back the way it was, rebooted, cleared cache & dalvik, but still I get the error. I really do NOT want to factory reset if I can help it.
It's frustrating even more-so because I generally run TitaniumBackups nightly and even TWRP backups pretty regularly too. I just hadn't gotten to one of the later, and ironically I was trying to fix the damn SD card write issue so that I could in fact do my TBs!! #FML
This seems like it should be something fixable no? I do have root and TWRP. I just can't find a good site that explains how to do it. I also tried to run the TWRP 'fix permissions' button too to no avail.
Can I just re-ODIN the PG1 or something worse case? And then re-root? ... without a factory reset I mean, so I keep my data and settings as they are?
I really don't understand how things go so jacked up from just changing an .xml file (and putting it back the way it was)??
Please help! Thanks!
Did you make a backup before you started modifying?
Did you try wiping cache and rebooting? Did you have a backup of the file you modified to restore? Check name and permissions?
If neither of the above help, factory reset and Odin again. Make a backup right after TWRP in case this happens again. Marshmallow is tricky and petty sometimes, unlike the earlier Android OS versions.
What you need is a PG1 modified services.jar for custom ROM. Don't recall seeing one shared for PG1. But there is a custom ROM in development forum.
