Rooting is up to u man. If u want to do it. As far asks what u get it depends on what u flash. If u just want root then u have access to your /system partition. Use apps that require root permission. With a custom recovery U can flash custom kernels for overclock and undervolt purpose. You can flash custom ROMs.

I would say no right now, to be honest.
I had a ton of troubles finding the right downloads to get it rooted. In the end, I rooted and installed Starburst and wasn't really impressed; I feel like there was nothing to even be able to edit. It was like running the stock ROM with a new lockscreen.
I'd hold off until development increases on this device. I'm probably going to unroot mine.
rooting is lots of fun, IF you know what the hell you are doing, BEFORE you start the process
Most problems that people have come from NOT READING and learning about it before they do it..
Just like anything else in life, if you don't read about it, and learn about it BEFORE you decide to do it, you will have problems.
It just blows my mind how many people get a phone, and root it and start flashing stuff without having any idea what they are doing, and then freak out when some thing goes wrong, and post frantic "please help me" stuff all over the internet..
Take the time to learn about it BEFORE you do it, and ask your questions BEFORE you start messing with your phone..If you won't do that, can't do that, or aren't smart enough to understand what you are reading, then don't root; this is a fantastic phone even if you never root it..
I was pessimistic aswell and took the plunge last night. Running Starburst its not the greatest but MUCH better than stock. Battery life is ludicrous. And much more fluid and responsive... My main reason was battery life and oh boy dose it help!

Starbust rom does not come with theme. U have to apply it urself. There are alot of themes out there. SB its main point is to save battery and it did a great job.if u like to customize, remove bloatwares or tweak ur phone, root ur phone.

THE root method will be the same.
Yeah, I just unrooted, actually.
I had a lot of fun going from ROM to ROM on my EVO4G, but right now there's just not enough out there for me to run away from the stock ROM. Once development really gets going, and maybe once Cyanogen hops on board with something legit, I'll root again.
..plus, I'm probably going to have to turn this phone in, so I had to unroot. I'm having this weird battery issue where it doesn't charge while the phone is on (well, it charges, but suppppppper slow and the phone gets hot as hell)
Speaking of that, if anyone reads this, any ideas on if I'll be able to get a brand new phone? I had to turn in my Evo once or twice, and they gave me a refurb both times. Screw that, I paid like $450 for this phone only 3ish weeks ago. There's no way I'll take a refurb.
Totally up to you dude. I am rooted myself and so far it's been great. Running Starburst latest ROM with OC. Great stuff so far.

I agree its totally up to the person but not like rooting and then unrooting is you difficult.... Hey may favorite line I have read in xda is "It aint yours till you root it" - words to live by....lol
Rooting is pretty easy on this phone, but I know there are not a lot of Devs compared to like the Evo 3d. The Devs we do have are all like pros at developing though, so they will be able to update and bring new things frequently. I rooted on Starburst's rom and I love it, because it's so Stock that it seems like its still and E4GT, but so different that I know its more smooth.
So im sewing u guys all like this starburst rom....I think I will wait lil bit longer to root when more roms comes out

Hi, everyone.
I am fairly new on the forum. I keep reading about "rooting" your phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy SII T989 and my questions are:
1. What is "phone rooting" ?
2. What are the advantages of having your phone "rooted" ?
Thank you.
I'm *hoping* this is a joke, but if it isn't, here's a good place to start:

Yes... It is a job to think: Why would you risk to unstable your phone by "root" it?
I see that:
- people are removing the wrong apps that negatively affect their phones (e.q. a ccounts and sync).
- people's phone are missing other thinks they used to like (bars, the small flashing blue light when you scroll to the top and to the bottom of the screen).
- the pletoria of apps for rooted phone are not that great...
- the advantage you get is that you only free up some internal space?
I have no issues with my phone rooted. I am on a stock T-Mobile ROM and froze all the bloatware. You can get rids of ads in apps when rooted which is pretty damn convenient for me. Do research on what is safe to freeze and you wont have any problems. Freezing is more safe than uninstalling...
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
The reason is you then have 100% control over your system. If you know what you're doing, having root can be a very powerful tool. You can greatly speed up the phone, free up ram, theme things, it gives you total control.
Now this is a double edged sword too. All the horror stories you're hearing about root are by people who don't have the faintest idea what they're doing and are breaking things.
Think of it in terms of computers. On linux, having root is, well, having root. You have full access to the system. On windows, (vista and above mainly) it's like having an administrator account with UAC turned off. In the right hands, this is very very nice. In the wrong hands, it can cause problems.
If you don't see the benefit of rooting, then I'd highly suggest you do not do so. These devices are not windows boxes where you screw up and "oh well, guess it's time to bust out the windows cd and do a re-install. I'd also suggest perhaps looking through the market at things that require root, and the benefits they give you. (Titanium backup, for instance. Or tethering when your provider doesn't want you to.)

Honestly if you don't want to root your phone do not root it. A lot of the problems you mention stem from people attempting to root and don't know what they are really doing. I am one of those people who are strictly against one click root methods. Because you literally don't need to read anything to understand what exactly are you doing.
If you know what you can do with a rooted phone things like
-Better battery life by manipulating the cpu cycles and governors.
-Change the entire look of the phone to look as if it a totally different os.
-Better performance overall of your phone
-Overall better experience than what the carrier give you.
I could name endless things about why rooting is better than what the stock gives you.
A lot of people I hear just say go to xda and root your phone. Which is very ignorant. Not everyone should root. If your phone is doing what it needs to do then leave it alone. My friends who have android phones ask me to root for them i tell them no root it themselves. With one click methods people make an xda account and blame the developer saying their rom sucks and is bad battery life where as the problems stem most of the time the user side.
I agree. I haven't rooted my SGS2 yet because the stock ROM, for me, seems to be serving its purpose very well. All my benchmark scores are within standard deviation of the OC kernels and now we've got wifi calling. I use ADW for a new UI and that suits me just fine. Yes, ICS will come from CM long before it does from the carriers, but I'm ok with that - even though I'll probably end up rooting and installing ICS once it's stable. My previous Android phones were rooted within days of purchase, and yes I would like to remove bloat, but with all the internal storage and my 32gb sd card I think I'll be a happy camper. It would be nice to know carrier IQ was gone, though...
rooting = control
no root = no control over settings
they don't let you root by default to prevent noobs from damaging their phone by changing some settings they should have not touched
when i rooted my phone and got beastmod 4.0 with flaux kernal my battery life increased like 50x than stock x.x

I personally don't think I'll be rooting (at least not while the phone's still new). I'm happy with the level of customization on the stock.
One question though. So basically, when rooted, you are "logged in" to your phone as root user? Are there any security risks with this?

Rooting your phone is like getting under the hood of your car.
If you have never worked on a car, it would not be wise to just start pulling out plugs/wires, moving things around and installing enhancements as you would probably ruin your car and end up paying a mechanic to fix it.
However, if you take the time to read up on any changes before you make them, then you could end up with a turbo-boosted hot rod with a custom Chrome setup that not only looks better but performs like a champ.

for me, rooting is mainly removing bloatware.
just like when you buy a new laptop, they install a lot of crap and it slow your computer down.
rooting can remove bloatware and also give you more speed, but you might lose the upgrading from the OTA(official t mobile update) and need to check update in here.
but if you are ok with the performance that you can on your phone now, stay with it.
It's all about the flash (yeah, bahby!) The custom ROM's can't be flashed without root: Forget about deleting/freezing unwanted applications and find a developers ROM you like - experiment a bit and have some fun with the phone.
As well, applications that require root - quick boot and appinstaller, are a must for me, making root mandatory for my phoning pleasure.
I had an HD2 before, and while there's greater variety in the ROM's, set-up to root is a biach on the HTC devices, so we can thank our lucky stars Samsung makes this easier (prolly not on purpose, though )

What's up man...wheelerhomes from YouTube.
Enjoying my rooted sg2! Have to agree with some comments ...understand what you're doing or don't do it. I learned just enough to be dangerous! But am picking up more and more as I read. I do wish the tutorials went a little more into WHY you're doing this or that vs just saying do this. It confusing to grasp what rooting is but when start downloading Odin, loading superuser, clockwork mod recovery, titanium, etc its REALLY overwhelming not knowing what each step does.
I certainly did not need to root. But like all these phones, it started out nice and snappy and within a week it was glitching like my old vibrant ...all kinds of stupid crap running in the background. Rooting was stressful because I didn't know exactly why I was doing these different steps!! Once I did it I was stoked at how fast my phone was. Just flashed wifi stock rom today that whitehawkx put up and I'm already missing my Juggernaut! But wifi calling/texting is slick for my location!
OK,
- better battery life can serve me better...
- being able to install other apps (such call recorder) can also be beneficial...
The problem is that I come from the Windows side rather than the Linux or Apple so I do not excel into this so I am afraid not to brick the phone.
Having said that, it would be VERY, VERY, VERY nice of you (or everyone else with a very rooted stable phone) to post clear and "for dummies" instructions on how to:
1. root your phone
2. install customed rom (beastmod, juggernaut or odin, etc - upon your recommendation).
Many thanks in advance !

Installed clockwork mod recovery on the first boot while the phone was still in the plastic wrap. Rooted via superoneclick on the 2nd boot ONLY because you have to reboot after flashing clockwork mod.
The process is easy if you read the instructions.

I have never rooted a phone before(well technically I rooted an HTC Inspire, which I was asked to do, but I did nothing on it involving the Root). What are some reasons I should root, and can anything go wrong during the root process? Just putting this out there, I will not be flashing any ROMs, as I know there is a chance that the device can be bricked While flashing if something goes wrong, and I do not have a spare phone to go back to if something does go wrong.

If your not going to use customs ROMs having root access will allow you to delete any app you desire including all the preloaded sprint ones. You will also be able to download and use any apps that require root for enhanced functionality. Beyond that, there's not a whole lot of difference you'll see.
In the early days, people would do root only to adjust memory values on phones like the g1 and hero. There were a lot of settings you could tweak on a stock phone to make it better with the addition of root. Now with today's technology and phones like the E4GT, alot of those tweaks are unnecessary. The ones that are helpful are lower level and best done by a ROM dev or someone who knows what they are changing. Custom ROMs will have these included usually.

Removing bloatware that wastes ram and flash storage space, certain apps are smoother (tasker, some launchers, and custom lockscreens for example), ability to block ads, better backup capabilities, ability to underclock the cpu for those times you need to squeeze extra battery life out, and so on.
If none of this sounds important, then don't root. It can be a little bit of a puzzle getting back to stock sometimes, but it is extremely extremely hard to do something to your phone that is not reversible at this point. Note this statement is not true for all phones, especially newly released phones. But it is true for the epic touch.

I have seen several ROMs I love the look of, including AOKP, CM9, and Caulkin's ROMs. My only issue with ROMs is the fact that things can go wrong with flashing, and they can brick the device. And from what ive heard, there is an increased chance of bricking when flashing an ICS ROM while on GB. I have no backup device to go to if something like that does happen, so thats why Im staying away from flashing for now.

The brick usually come from flashing to gb from ics using ics repacked kernels. There is always some risk/chance of brick from a bad flash, but El26 with cwm is fairly safe and the last kernel to have offical cwm. That is the only kernel i will use to flash anythin. I flash new roms every week. I have flashed to and from ics with no issues.

My friend you have been misinformed.... There is a risk in everything we do so like I said if worried don't do it. If you take some more time and read you will see that the tar files are pretty brick proof and problems have occurred when flashing roms on ICS and using an ICS recovery. Most developers have stopped using CWM in ICS roms.
Clearly you need to do a lil more reading if you want to root but like suggested just relax and wait for the OTA and you will be OK.... One more thing all instructions say to flashEL26 kernel which is GB to flash anything ICS..... so flashing ICS rom while on GB is wrong

1. Titanium Backup: remove those pesky system apps that Sprint really thinks you need.
2. File explorers: Being able to modify system folders to change things like the boot animation, etc.
3. Ad blocking: The ability to block ads (moral issues notwithstanding... but some apps have no paid version to get rid of the ads.)
4. Once you've rooted, it's just the beginning. You may change your mind about flashing and rooting your phone is the first step in learning more about your phone and the AndroidOS in general.
I have not seem anyone mention that it's also about the about the damn principal of the matter... why shouldn't you have root access for a device you bought? Also if you ODIN back to EL26 to flash, carefully read all instructions posted with the rom, and wait a day or two after the release and check the comments to make sure there hasn't been some sort of inexplicable rash of bricks thanks to the rom you won't have any problems to speak of... other than not being able to fathom how much better something like AOKP is than stock touchwiz gingerbread
Thanks to everyone. I've decided that I will root when the official ICS launches for my phone.

Personally, I root to follow fledging developers open their ROMs. It is exhilarating to see the new stuff that people come up with and the creativity that ensues because of it.
Also enhancing my phone experience with free hotspot access and customization doesn't help. However if none of these interesting you I wouldn't recommend it.
Reason to root
I root because it can be done. It's that simple. To me, it feels like regardless of the magnitude of what you can or cannot do while rooted, or how easy or difficult it may be to root your phone, a skilled user should have access to everthing your phone is capable of.
Plus, I feel like I'm "sticking it to the man", which is an added bonus!
My main reason for rooting was to remove the bundled software that comes with the phone. But I love that fact that I don't have any ads either! If u decide to root, download AdFree from the market & u'll realize just how many "free" apps use adware
Proud new owner of HOX was using GS3 before and HATED every moment of using that piece of crap! So far im in love with my HOX but since im running stock ICS i do suffer some performance issues time to time, So therefor i need your opinion should i root my one x and install custom JB rom or should i wait for the official OTA from htc, My main reason for rooting is like a said to flash JB other than that i can live without rooting my one x so should i root or wait for the OTA.
Use your phone for a while first, there have been a couple of issues that have turned up a little while into ownership so best ensure you don't have them first.
Then, once your happy you won't have issues, it's up to you whether to root or not, personally I always root for better control and backup ability.
Could you elaborate more into what kind of issues?
jb ota is right around the corner if your phone is not branded...
just wait till you get it and decide after if you still feel the need to root.
Will the gaming performance improve with jb cuz rite now when i play gta 3 it lags like crazy! i cant even imagine playing gta vice city which should be coming out in few weeks.

^^^ Not necessarily true, a lot of the time HTC repair center's will turn a blind eye to the phone if it's rooted as a lot of users have verified now, read the threads.

@ OP- I'd stay stock for a while mate, as said here before, OTA's are just around the corner, if, after that you still feel curious just root it and install ARHD, that way you'll still have the stock experience and it won't be too much of a culture shock for you.
AND Then if you still feel curious flash customer kernels and mods etc...
Baby steps bro...
You can use my thread (check my sig) to root the phone, then stop there once rooted and then use this JB Flasher Tool to make getting onto JB easier for you.
Thanks alot guys! Since OTA is just around the corner figure i'd wait for that. But as far as issues goes so none whatsoever infact the battery is been surprisingly been on par with s3 or iphone 4s.
Do non-sense roms have the same aggressive memory management that the stock rom has? I'm going to wait for the JB update, but if it still kills apps quickly like stock ICS does, I might go with a custom ROM.
It's REALLY annoying when I open a 3rd (gasp!) app, and when I pop back to the first, it has to completely reload. Mostly annoying when that app is a browser page.

That'll always happen with multitasking, HTC muffed up the multitasking so it isn't what I'd call 'true' multitasking. It'll mostly need to reload the app.
I think Hamdir wrote a good thread on how to counter that with some script changes, try asking him?
I don't think the aggressive memory management is down to HTC Sense per se I think it's an Android thing? Again that'd need verification.
Root can be handy to have. The most obvious use is backup, if you want to make sure your app data (for those apps that still insist on using phone storage for data/savegames) and settings are covered. But I've personally had a few "needs root" things pop up now.
It's worth at least unlocking the bootloader sooner rather than later in case you ever do decide you want root, because when you do the unlock it wipes your phone. Better to go through re-setting it up early rather than having to wipe it later when you have loads of stuff on it.
On the other hand it voids warranty, and they can tell even if you re-lock the device as it will permanently say "re-locked". If you have a hardware fault you can probably pull some sort of consumer protection law thing on them, but you need to be aware that they'll probably fight it tooth and nail and claim that your warranty is "Void. Period." People's experiences are well documented in the warranty thread.
My approach was to wait a month and not get too settled-in with my data/apps/etc during that month. A really high percentage of hardware faults with any device or machine show up within the first month* so after that I felt comfortable enough to take the plunge.
* (The month thing is known as the breaking-in period... I work for an electronics manufacturer and one thing they offer is doing the break-in testing in-house before even shipping to the customer. At a fairly high price of course)
Noup. If u ask about it, u shouldnt root hox.
Stay away from rooting things.
Yes bro... Why not?
SkyDragon Sense Rom V1
Well,
if you agree that you may loose warranty, let me tell you why I always root my phones..
- to delete all crappy applications (stock, soundhound, carriers app...)
- to be able to install some cleaning app which needs root (game cheats, ad cleaners ...)
- to change Roms and find the one I need (in fact I change every week )
- many, many others usefull things...
By the way, i already return old phones to sellers, they were repaired, even with unlocked bootloaders & root. Maybe I was lucky

I totally agree with you. I just hate those crappy apps. It's like buying a notebook full of bloatware and not being able to remove it! I'm sure that is not cool LOL. Besides that, I think Titanium Backup Pro is a must, and it only works on rooted phones.
To ROOT or not to ROOT, that's the question....

Yes, Titanium Backup is The Must.
My Favorites are, as said below, Titanium (pro) , Nova Launcher (with root), Lucky Patcher, and of course Adfree.
Usually, as soon as I get a new phone (having 3 now : DHD, Sensation, One X... Nexus 4 coming) or Tablet (Xoom wifi MZ604, Nexus 7) , I root it after having unlocked it.
I can't stand having some lags & freez screens on devices.
So should you root ?
Maybe you should see with some friends of yours or some relatives that owns some rooted HOX. Of course, before unlocking and footing your device, make sure your device is working good, have no problems.
The phone's already pretty dang fast and smooth, what's better about this phone when it's rooted?

It depends on what you want. for example, i rooted my phones because I got tired of the ads on every game and app. so, i installed ad-free android. and also, i like to use different ROMs. but if you aren't into things like that, you don't have to root. the phone is excellent just the way it is.
I wouldn't recommend rooting your phone at the moment, at least wait till after the update. but to be honest this phone is super smooth and the only reason you'd really want to root is as the guy mentioned above, and maybe a few other tweaks or if you wanted to try cyanogen 10.1 or aosp/aokp roms.

Like others have said, it depends if you really want to. I did because 1. I hate ads 2. I wanted to restore my games with all their data. 3. To uninstall all the bloatware I'm never gonna use it 4. And of course to flash roms

I hate ads too, but I like to keep it stock, until some rom which is amazing and has no problems comes

Why not just downlaod the stock official M919 Odin flash firmware and keep it in a good safe place so if or when you feel you want to
to restore your phone to the official stock unrooted state as it was when you first purchased the phone you will be able to do just that.
If you keep your phone stock and unrooted all you will accomplish is having a crippled phone and you will not be able to enjoy it to the
fullest extent.
You will not be able to use many of the useful and productive apps from the play store because a lot of the better apps, mods, themes
and audio/video software will require root access or they will not work. Same holds true for most any app/mod/theme found here in XDA.
There are cwm/twrp flashable rooted roms which contain all the bloatware that the stock official unrooted M919 odin flash roms have so
even if you are rooted you can still enjoy whatever benefits there are for having bloatware, advertisements without being crippled by not
having the abilty to install apps/mods/themes from the market or any other place whether they require root or not.
Makes Sense...
I personally enjoy the rooted phone much more since I'm able to use the tether feature on a custom rom.
The answer is yes, always yes.
1. Delete bloatware (stock OS partition is HUGE) You can open up a lot of memory and save battery life.
2. Control over device options/customization (see xda video and other posts)
- I hated the LOUD t-mobile start-up/shutdown sounds, being able to change the splash screens and remove sound was a big plus for me.
3. COMPLETE backups. (Games, App Data, Certain system settings or directories, etc)
4. Custom ROMs/Kernels (I haven't felt a need to OC at all, but the customizations and improvements to efficiency and battery life using the hard work of devs here really improves the overall experience using the device)
5. You can un-root if necessary.
+1 for rooting.

I posted a similar response in a similar thread recently, but I son,t feel like I can over say this.
Root it.
Do not pass go.
Do not collect $200.
Go directly to root.
Everyone will see how super awesome your phone is and want to be just like you. People will form fan clubs to celebrate your greatness. Women will throw themselves at you because rooted phones scream "Alpha male". You will have to do occasional autograph appearances and ribbon cutting ceremonies for various business and park openings as a result.
After a while all the added responsibility and living in the public spotlight might start to wear you down. That is the only down side.
But due to your increased popularity you will get more phone calls and text messages. And every time you answer one you will do it on your rooted phone and you will be reminded of how much cooler you are than everyone else because of the nifty mod you flashed earlier that day, and you will remember that it's all worth it.
Also you get to change the color of the clock and stuff. So that's super cool.
I mean I'm kidding, obviously. But there is a definite coolness factor to rooting and modding. Nearly everyone who sees my phone asks how I made it completely orange. (Clock, icons, menus, etc...basic cyanogen theming stuff. Nothing fancy to any cyanogen user) They are mesmerized by this.
And that is just the superficial stuff. If you set it up properly you can double the battery life of a rooted phone over stock. Disabling bloat, using a battery friendly governor, under clocking, etc...its all so much better than stock. I'd take a 2 year old rooted phone over a brand new top of the line stock phone any day.
Sent from your phone. You should be careful where you leave that thing.
Haha, alright ill give it a try.

Keep in mind that once you are rooted, you can choose not to use root features.
If you aren't rooted, you can't suddenly decided you do want to use a root feature.
Its once of those better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it situations.
