I have tried several times to get CM 10.1 installed on my Kindle Fire 8.9 and every time I get the red wipe screen trying to install the 2nd boot loader. After searching through the forums I have not found a definitive explanation (not that its not out there, but i didn't find one) of what causes the red screen, just how to recover from it.
I have tried using HashCode's process
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128175
and also Option (41) in KFFirstAide
Can someone please explain what the red wipe screen indicates on the Kindle Fire 8.9, so I can avoid it and get the 2nd boot loader installed?
My Kindle is currently running Version 8.1.4 installed from the latest KFFirstAide (option 7). I have successfully rooted the device and I have been able to recover after the red screen each time.
Device Status before attempting to install 2nd boot loader
- Rooted using B4nary's Tool (v18.5.1)
- Erased Kindle Cache and User Data
- Enabled ADB on Kindle
- Enabled Allow 3rd party software
- Verified ADB Commands can be executed
- Verified Fastboot Commands can be executed
Thank You in Advance!

I used this tool KFHD_SRTv2.1- 8.1.4 To get into fastboot when I had the solid red screen then used option 7 to completely wipe and restore their is probably another way to just do the boot but it did work for me (did it today even)
Turn the kindle off (hold power down)
Load the KFHD_SRTv2.1- 8.1.4 tool using run as administrator
then use option 1
once your kindle says its in fastboot then close that utility and run the First aid

I know you said you aren't on 8.3, but it sounds like the bootloader issue Hash talks about in step 4.5 of his post. You could try flashing the bootloader he posts in that step to see if that fixes your issue. I had the same problem, until I flashed it.
Just an idea, I am in no way an expert just a tinkerer.

I too have the red screen, I tried to use the SRtool but was unsuccessful in recovering, can u provide anymore information? i'm really freaking out a little because i'm new to this stuff
I think fattire said Amazon enabled fastboot in this state. On KF2 and KFHD7, this is possible with a factory cable. I guess it's also possible that they have enabled the use of the factory cable for the KFHD8.9, but I'm only speculating.
Before the update, flashing unsigned boot and recovery partitions without the 2nd bootloader properly functioning, the device just wouldn't turn on. Now, not only will the device turn on, but some are even fixable in this state. I'm wondering if Amazon realized that wasn't cost effective to send every broken modified device to a specific secure location to get reflashed.
I don't quite remember what I did, but I was able to fix the "red wipe" screen on my Kindle 8.9.
I think I got this when I first tried installing 8.9StariROM when it was first posted on the forum. I did not know that the red screen could appear if TWRP was not installed already, and I think that's why I got the red screen error.
I didn't really know what it was all about, but somehow I was able to make my kindle go into the fastboot using this command (fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product) and basically followed the instruction here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128175
I kept getting device not found error on ADB commands, so I skipped to STEP 4.5 and ran below commands in order: (of course, I downloaded all those files as well)
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash bootloader kfhd8-u-boot-prod-8.1.4.bin
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash boot kfhd8-freedom-boot-8.3.0.img
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash recovery kfhd8-twrp-2.4.4.0-recovery.img
then I think I ran fastboot -i 0x1949 flash system starirom-system.img to load the system image and I was able to have a working kindle 8.9 again.
I hope this helps.
Here is what I did to get myself out of trouble after screwing around with my KFHD 8.9 and getting a red screen (NOTE: I am assuming you have already installed the proper drivers so your PC can recognize the Kindle Fire HD):
1) Downloaded the above-mentioned KFHD SRT tool from here: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B4lZEJI5lYeMR1YteUt2MGxZTGM) and the boot.img and recovery.img from here: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B4lZEJI5lYeMNGdXMHI3T3pKM2c&usp=sharing
2) Unzipped the SRT tool into a folder on my Windows 7 boot drive (C:\KFHD_SRT_v2.1), and copied over the two .img files to the /images sub-folder.
3) Ran SR Tool.bat in Admin mode (right-click, Run As Administrator, click Yes to accept)
4) Turned off my Kindle by holding the power button 10 seconds until the screen was off
5) Chose option 1. Enable Fastboot, chose "n" when the tool asks if the device is turned on, then pressed the power button once on the Kindle to turn the screen on. VoilĂ , I was in Fastboot mode.
6) From a command line prompt (started in Admin mode as always), went to the /images sub-folder of the KFHD SRT tool and typed in the following commands, one at a time (just press Enter at the end of each, and wait until done):
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash boot boot.img
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash system system.img (note: this may take a few minutes, depending on the speed of your USB port)
7) Still from the same command prompt, rebooted the tablet using the following command (type it in and press Enter):
fastboot -i 0x1949 reboot
I was back in business from there.
Can we get this as a sticky in the Dev Section? it took me 2 weeks to get my system back from a red screen that the below was able to do.

Same thing here. Any ideas on how to recover?
do you recovery your kindle fire?
sorry, i'm not here long time....
I think you don't need to install OMAP driver. I have been fixed my bricked device (KF HD 8.9) today.
How it became bricked.
I rooted it yesterday, than installed all Google apps and got strange issue in gapps framework. I started to delete some google apps and .odex files and my device stopped to boot correctly. It boots into recovery and recommend to reset to the factory mode. However this trick is not successful. So I have had boot logo looping.
How I fixed it.
I tried a lot of drivers and tricks to boot my KF into recovery. I even ordered the factory cable today on eBay, but I didn't want to wait about two weeks when it will be arrived to me. So I found working driver in Android SDK and Amazon Extension, like it described here: https://developer.amazon.com/sdk/fire/connect-adb.html . Than I used Kindle FIre Utility to run fastboot and adb tools. Also I downloaded KFHD System.img Recovery Tool to download the latest system.img and flash it in fastboot mode.
1. Download ADB (and Fastboot) drivers from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1890413 and install it (I used KindleDrivers.exe setup file)
2. Start downloading the KFHD System.img Recovery Tool from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2011126
3. Download Kindle FIre Utility from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889
4. Extract Kindle FIre Utility and run cmd.exe with with working folder Kindle Fire Utility\tools
5. Run this command:
fastboot -i 0x1949 reboot-bootloader (it will be wait while your device will be turned on in to fastboot)
6. Power off your device (hold power button more than 10s)
6. Connect your it to the PC
7. Power on it. And install drivers manually, choosing .inf file from the destination path where KindleSetup.exe was installed before. If you done steps above without mistakes, then fastboot.exe found your device during powering on for 0.5s approximately and switch it into bootloader mode (it means permanent fastboot in our case).
8. Now in fastboot mode it is possible to refllash some .img files. So extract downloaded earlier KFHD System.img Recovery Tool and flash system.img using this command:
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash system <system.img> .
9. When flashing will be finished you should erase userdata and cache using this commands:
fastboot -i 0x1949 erase cache
fastboot -i 0x1949 erase userdata
10. And then boot the device again in normal mode using this command:
fastboot -i 0x1949 reboot
Now can load KFHD 8.9 without errors and than using adb tool to do other tricks.
Title says it all. I have the .img backups. Gotta send it in for a warranty replacement.
Thanks in advance for any help.
I've never done this but verygreen's thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2017562 has instruction at the bottom.
Where it says:
Code:
fastboot flash boot /path/to/mmcblk0p10 -i 0x1949
What specifically needs to replace the /path/to portion? It says to remember where I put the .img files (I keep all of that in a specific desktop folder).
The path of the images is C:\Users\My Name\Desktop\Kindle Fire Resources\New Backup Images\stock-recovery (for instance)

Start with the Kindle off.
Open a cmd window like when you did the 2nd-bootloader install. Enter:
cd "C:\Users\Your Name\Desktop\Kindle Fire Resources\New Backup Images\stock-recovery"
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash recovery stock-recovery.img
(here your PC will wait for you to connect your Kindle via USB. Once it powers on, the fastboot command will automatically place the Kindle in fastboot mode and begin to run.)
(once that is done enter the next command)
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash boot stock-boot.img
(and finally)
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash system stock-system.img
(this command will take a long time unlike the first 2 which complete fairly quickly. next up, we need to clear out your user data and cache -- including sdcard. enter: )
fastboot -i 0x1949 format data
(then)
fastboot -i 0x1949 format cache
(and last)
fastboot -i 0x1949 reboot
If all is well this will reboot the Kindle into a brand new Amazon start up screen.
NOTE: I'll have to double check the format commands as I'm typing this from memory.
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire HD using Tapatalk 2
Ah, I didn't realize it was as simple as changing the directory and running the commands, I thought I'd have to reference the specific location. Thanks so much for your help.
For some reason it's only going into fastboot for about three seconds before turning off. Ever seen that before?
EDIT: It's also doing this when I attempt to boot it up or plug it into the charger. Has a good charge.
EDIT2: Later, plugging it in leaves it sitting on the Kindle Fire screen.
This is after flashing the boot.img failed. Am I stuck?
This is odd behavior. Normally it will sit on the fastboot screen for quite a while.
Do that screen showing "fastboot" actually come up? Or does it show the Yellow logo and then stop?
Not really stuck. All of the commands you're using are for fastboot mode which doesn't require a full Android OS.
Just need fastboot mode to work.
EDIT: What are the sizes on your stock-*.img backup files?

Recovery: 8,192
Boot: 8,192

Recovery and boot flashed, but then it randomly turned off. I unplugged the Kindle (which had already given the Windows dismount sound when it turned off). I ran the flash system command, plugged the kindle in when instructed, and it turned off after a couple seconds of flashing it. Now it does that every time you put it in fastboot - display for a couple seconds then go away. I've got it plugged in and sitting on that KF screen for now, hoping maybe it just needed some extra juice or something.
FYI - I actually had to do TWO of these. The LCD cracked on one, and Amazon sent this replacement. The cracked LCD device restored just fine. The only exception were those wipe commands. They didn't work, but it booted into stock recovery and asked me to wipe, and it's good to go. Back in the box and ready to be shipped. This device (replacement for the cracked LCD) has a faulty power button, which I suspect may be part of my issue. Replacement number two arrived less than an hour ago.
Hi all, I'm hoping to get some help or advice. I have a 1st gen Kindle Fire. When I received it, it had the stock bootloader installed and appeared to be stuck in fastboot mode. I performed the following steps:
1. used a factory cable to get access to fastboot
2. used soupkit (in Unbuntu 10.10) to flash FFF 1.4a and TWRP 2.2.2.1. Both flashed successfully.
3. turned the Kindle off (holding power for 20 secs)
4. switched over to a normal USB cable
5. powered up and issued 'fastboot getvar product' to stop FFF in fastboot
6. ran 'fastboot oem idme bootmode 4000' to reset to normal bootmode
7. 'fastboot reboot'
8. in FFF chose recovery (power led turned orange and FFF says booting)
9. stuck
I've tried reflashing FFF and TWRP several times, redownloaded and check MD5 (all ok). No matter what I do it seems this KF refuses to move past the bootloader.Any help or ideas? Thanks for your time.

Maybe try different versions of FFF and/or TWRP? You can also try the KFU tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889
still perplexed
Thanks Scoobio, I did try that too. So far I have successfully installed 3 versions of bootloader (FFF 1.4a, FFF with yellow triangle, and also stock from Amazon). All three install successfully. Unfortunately all three have the same symptoms. I am able to execute fastboot commands to flash images, getvar, etc, etc, and they complete successfully. However anytime I "ask" or "let" the bootloader try to boot system or recovery it hangs. FFF 1.4a hangs, previous "yellow triangle" version of FFF hangs, stock also hangs - always at the same point. The screen never flashes like it does when the recovery or kernel first loads. So I don't think its making it that far.
I've tried with factory cable, regular usb, no usb at all. Always hangs on boot. I also tried running KFU in Windows (same problems), SoupKit (same problems), and FireKit (same problems). Last thing I tried was usb_fix_parts_and_install_fff_twrp. It also ran successfully but still same problem.
At this point I don't care so much about fixing the kindle as much as solving the riddle. I'd like to figure this out just so I know...you know I can't let the machine win. So I'm wondering if it could be bad memory blocks or something else missing...will update if i discover anything further. Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Oh and...I am able to reset bootmode back to normal or recovery or fastboot...always completes the command successfully but never makes a difference.
I've been trying to root my Kindle Fire running 6.3.3. I bought a fastboot cable and got it to boot into fastboot mode to flash TWRP and firefirefire. I ran the commands and TWRP failed but firefirefire installed. Now when the kindle boots I get the firefirefire bootloader but it cant boot into the recovery because the TWRP never installed. Also, I can't get it to fastboot anymore, not even with the cable. Can anyone please help me get TWRP installed? I've read many forums and tried about everything I found.

FFF bootloader supports fastboot commands, but the flash command is now
fastboot flash recovery file name
ie drop the -i 0x1949
Code:
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.1-otter.img
because the fastboot mode window is short
with kindle connected to pc, power off kindle, enter commands, then power on kindle

I've been trying this for about 30 minutes or so with no luck...I even downloaded a different version of the twrp image. Do I have to wait for the fastboot screen to start the command or do I start the process before powering on the device? I'm not really sure what I'm doing wrong here.

Should be able to do it either way but I press enter, before the power button
This will not work if drivers are not correct
could try
Code:
fastboot devices
as a test should get something like
Code:
123456789 bootloader
back in command prompt
I finally got it to work and I can't thank you enough. You were right. I knew my computer recognized the device with adb in normal boot but my computer wouldn't recognize the device in fastboot mode until i reinstalled the android driver while it was in fastboot mode. Now I have a custom ROM running Google Play apps! Again, thank you!
Hey, I don't know if this will help others, but I had a hell of a time trying to get my kindle to recognize while in the bootloader/fastboot mode... It frustrated me so much that I had to write about it.
I recently switched to Windows 10, so it seems like my computer is relearning drivers and stuff...
My kindle was fine when on, and I could issue adb commands from the main screen, but when in fastboot mode, I couldn't get it detected. I knew the drivers were an issue, but I couldn't figure out how to do it. I looked at Amazon's support pages, went through the SDK route, tinkered with the adb.ini and so forth... to no avail.
Post after post said that the easiest way to install the drivers was through the Kindle Fire Utility, but for some reason, the drivers in the .bat file kept failing and would not load. It took a good few hours to figure out the solution.
When I asked the Web why the drivers kept failing, I came across a post that said Windows was actually blocking unknown drivers from loading onto my system. I really wish Windows had told me that instead of just saying "Fail"...
I had to hold down the shift button and click restart on the start menu, and when the computer restarted, I when through: troubleshoot -> advanced options -> startup settings and clicked on Restart. It eventually gave me the option to disable that signature verification [F7]
My explanation is crude, because I want you to look it up properly. Just search for "disable driver signature enforcement" and you should be fine.
Hope this helps others out. I may have to revisit my own post just to see how to do this again.
Hi, I was running CM11 on a rooted Kindle Fire HD 8.9 happily but decided to take the CM12 nightly and it's not gone well.
It installed but wasn't running correctly, here's where I made my mistake. Instead of waiting until I had a PC to hand, I did a factory reset on the kindle itself (i'm an idiot!).
Now, the kindle will start up into fastboot mode and take some commands but that's it. No recovery, no adb.
I have the android SDK installed along with google usb drivers and the amazon kindle usb drivers. The device appears on the PC (no yellow triangle, I'm running windows 8.1 and the driver is signed).
With fastboot, I can flash a boot and recovery image but I can't then restart the device in recovery mode or standard boot.
a fastboot reboot stays in fastboot mode. any volume and power button combinations won't take it into recovery.
i tried fastboot oem unlock but that doesn't get a response from the device.
I have the kindle SR tool utility (v 1.3.5). It can flash the images to the device but any attempt to reboot will always take it back into fastboot.
I've read countless articles but I'm now stuck. Have I killed my fire?
Thanks, Mike
"fastboot -i 0x1949 oem recovery" should reboot your kfhd into recovery. From there you can wipe system, recovery and data and re-install recovery, cm11 and gapps assuming the zip files are still on your device. Or you can erase and re-flash everything using fastboot commands. If all else fails you can first return it to stock KFHD OS using the system recovery tool. All you need is to get it into fastboot mode which it sounds like you can.

In my situation (Kindle fire HD 8.9 amazon OS 8.1.5) after install TWRP 2.6.0.0, the device is not loaded (always orange logo kindlefire at all) me helped Wipe> format data, after I then sent image cm-11 for devices, `adb push cm-11.zip /sdcard/`, and wipe cache and install cm-11 are successful.
Installing TWRP only for fastboot mode, in the fastboot mode `adb` command dont work, only `fastboot...........` command.
I hope something helped.
