Has anyone successfully installed clockwork recovery on the continuum? I was tempted to try the fascinate instructions
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA App
I have used Titanium Back up with success
Okay, I can officially say that the Fascinate Clockwork Recovery does not work... Fails on "updating from Verizon" or something similar.... Then reboots... Is that Clockwork or the standard recovery?
Okay, I did not backup my stock recovery (stupid stupid stupid stupid), so can anyone get me that file and tell me which directory I need to shove it in?

I cannot remember the process to backup the recovery. What do you need me to do?

Use root explorer or something similar, find the recovery file and copy it... Attach it here and let me injure what directory it was in... Please... I appreciate any help...

Or let me know... Somehow Swype changed that to injure...

I believe its more than just a file, you have to flash it.

If you know why the directory is I can post the files. Man, we really need some devs...
Also, you can might not need to flash it, but you would probably need to use ABD then.

Was informed that we could use dump_image to pull it and then flash_image to reflash. Trying to get ADB working at the moment. Typing on the phone is terrible.

The typing isn't that bad if you use swype or SwiftKey. Is there anything I can do to help?
Sent from my space time Continuum using the XDA App.
OK this is the best I can do I think.
I dumped the recovery block with the awesome help from Da_G]NARF[ on the XDA IRC chan.
AFAIK this should fix it.
Extract boot.rar
Copy boot.bin to your sdcard
Unmount the SDcard if you copied from your computer.
Open a terminal either with ADB shell or im assuming a term emulator would work.
SU for root privs. then use this command:
Code:
dd if /dev/block/bml1 of=/sdcard/boot.bak bs=4096
This will backup your current one.
Code:
dd if=/sdcard/boot.bin of=/dev/block/bml1 bs=4096
This will rewrite with the new one.
Reboot.

If you can pull the stock recovery and post it, that would be great...
Otherwise, could one of you try booting into the stock recovery and see what it does... I tried to load the Fascinate Clockwork using ROM Manager and I'm not sure if it actually did anything or not... I don't think Clockwork would check with Verizon for updates.... All I have experience with is Amon Ra on my Eris..... Would be great if it just failed to change it.....

Looks like it worked... I guess I might not know for sure until the 2.2 OTA comes out.... Fingers crossed...
I've been working on porting clockwork. After running
Code:

with the path substitution, I get
Code:

Does anyone have any suggestions?
I am new to these forums Well, i have been looking around here for a while for my Continuum phone, i just haven't said anything
I may be completely wrong... But do these steps (The ones in the beginning) install Clockwork? Or is that for something completely different?
and this is probably the wrong place to ask... But in order to install the Voodoo lagfix, you need Clockwork, right?
Thank you for your help everyone

I'm using a Terminal Emulator on my phone trying to run the command to backup my current boot image. I'm typing "su" first for root privileges then typing "dd if /dev/block/bml1 of=/sdcard/boot.bak bs=4096" but I'm getting an error saying uknown operand if. Help?
Nevermind, I've discovered the problem. The code to backup your current boot image is "dd if=/dev/block/bml1 of=/sdcard/boot.bak bs=4096". There was an equal sign missing in the post above.
So I've completed the steps listed above and was under the impression this would restore my phone to stock. However, I still don't have the Verizon bloatware I deleted. Did I not understand what this process was meant to accomplish?
i just wonder is there any ODIN software version that can flash the new JB update. here's my phone information :
BASEBAND : I9250XXLA2 , BUILD NUMBER: IMM76K.19250XWLD2.Android version: 4.0.4 . I used to go to www.sammobile.com for samsung firmware update and flash using ODIN for my previous android galaxy phone, but i cant find any version of ODIN that works to flash the JB. anybody have the answer? thanks in advance.
No one has packaged it up for Odin yet, because there hasn't been a need. We have a Nexus device, which means that we can use fastboot, which is just as easy as Odin, but safer than Odin.

Like Efrant said, use Fastboot. Don't mess with Odin there's no need.
thanks..how safe is using fastboot? does it involve command prompt? because im really not good at that. can you give me link and simplify info so i may use that method to update my nexus. thanks in advance

Yes it requires the command line. Its extremely safe if you're capable of looking at a guide and copy/pasting commands.

Follow the steps in the "flash" link in my signature to flash takju imm76i, then follow the steps in the update" link to go to 4.1.1 from 4.0.4.
It may seem complicated, but it is really not.
I don't recommend using a toolkit -- you won't likely learn anything at all.

thanks guys. i will try to use the command line 1st. and if its too confusing,i will use the toolkit. so i have to root my nexus 1st and install custom boot recovery? which means the download mode will be replaced by other custom boot recovery? if i do that, will my phone receive OTA via google next time? or do i have to recover back to its original state? im so noob at this..
thanks efrant i have click link given. it really helped. i will follow the steps. i would press 1000x thanks button for both of you guys but it seems that i can't..lol
And you all wrong, Odin package is available
But not at sammobile but at xda. I've downloaded the package but never used it. Easily done using fast boot commands.

fastboot is the standard way of flashing for Nexus devices, it can be considered safer than ODIN, the instruction is in the sticky of this Q&A section.

Open the folder, right-click in the folder and select "Open Command Prompt Here" or what ever it is. Or just go to Start->Run and type cmd.exe in the box. Then navigate to your directory by typing cd name-of-directory. For example, if your files are in C:\junk, type cd junk
The prompt should then be C:\junk

The first option in RM is to flash a recovery. Upon pressing that you are given a list of phones. Scroll down to the Samsung GS3 and choose it. It will then flash the recovery within RM.

Hey my md5 checksum has a mismatch, but I know the files are fine. is there a terminal command to recompile the md5 for a given image?
Also I noticed the new version of CWM has teh option to backup files as TAR, wouldn't that be better since Odin flashes Tar? If you couldn't get into CWM for some reason you can just flash for Odin?
Forgive me if I'm being newb here had my phone for three days after a motorola bravo
Hi guys,
I have CWM 5.5 on my S3 i747, and I just wonder where can I find the latest version of CWM for i747, and also how do I upgrade it using ODIN ?
As I understand, it should be a file named "recovery.img", and to flash it on my S3, I have to tar it and flash the tar file using ODIN. Is that right?
Thanks!
Download rom manager and get from there, I personally couldn't stand the latest cwm recovery its slow as hell took way too long to make a backup
Galaxy SIII via XDA premium
Download your version of cwm there
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
Place it at the root of your sdcard and rename it recovery.IMG
Download terminal emulator from the play store. Run the terminal
type: su (press enter)
Then type: dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 (press enter)
Type everything right. If you get the last number wrong, you get a brick.

U can always use rom manager to get latest cwm as everyone mentioned but that will be regular cwm.
If u want touch cwm than u got three options
1) use terminal emulator as mentioned in the earlier post
2) buy it from play store
3) flash through Odin.

They most likely will and even if they don't you could always flash a previous version of cwm( the one you made the backup with). No need for angry faces lol. You should search and get the lowdown of the consequences of everything you flash before you flash.

Hi all.
As the title says, is it possible to flash a zip file without go into recovery mode?
Many thanks !
recovery has to be installed, or no flashing.
but there is an app that is called Rom manager(free from playstore) you can use it to flash .zip while you're on your phone. it will automatically go to recovery, flash and reboot.

The answer is famous: It depends.
Technical answer: yes, if and only if, the partition to where the updatezip is targeted is not being used.
More explanation:
1. You can replace Recovery and Bootloader (not that it's needed, mind you, praise be to Samsung for providing an unlocked bootloader) while the phone is running, because the partitions where these two are located are totally unused during normal phon operation.
2. You CANNOT replace the Kernel or ROM or Baseband while the phone is operating; the partitions are being accessed, and if you (stupidly, I should say) try to replace them while the phone is not in Recovery... chances are you're going to brick your phone.
To perform replacement #1, all you need are: a rooted phone, the Terminal app, and the 'dd' utility (usually installed alongside Busybox).

As pepoluan said, its possible. When you open the zip file, except the META-INF file, the other folder will go as it should starting from the root of the phone. Use something like Root File Explorer then its possible. Files such as init.d files can be copy and pasted. I tried and it works.
but its look like a lot of work and seem unsafe..flash using recovery is very easy and safe for me..
