Official Update Proceedure ICS to JB Latest Update 3/28/13 - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

This thread is here to assist people with updating to the newest JB update GB27.
I have noticed some confusion already with some saying they tried to update and it did not work.
//////////////// Notice \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
This Samsung update is 99.5 % identical to the leaked or unofficial GB27 that has been in circulation since February, other than some added features like smart stay (mixed results on this feature being present or working) and some more Samsung apps these builds are the same.
You can get root by going with the leaked GB27 or you can follow Mattix 724's guide to root in the general section.
In order to get this current update you need to be "unrooted", be on a stock official ICS OTA FL24, and have Kies installed and updated on your PC. XP, Vista or Windows 7, According to Samsung, the simple upgrade toolhttp://www.samsung.com/us/support/SupportOwnersFAQPopup.do?faq_id=FAQ00052554&fm_seq=60761 will function on Mac OS, there have been reports of update working on Windows 8 also. http://goo.gl/XVWfi
Last official update was FL24. If running leaked JB, or custom ICS rom you need to roll back to stock unrooted FL24.
You can find it at Rwilco12's Repository here http://www.rwilco12.com/downloads.p...10)/Stock ROMs/ICS/FL24/Full Restore/Unrooted for full data restore.(Wipes all user data).
Or http://www.rwilco12.com/Files/Devic...SPH-D710_FL24_CL1173404_REV2_Stock_Nodata.exe for "no data" restore. (Keeps all user data).
Don't forget to thank Rwilco12, this repository is a great asset to the forum. Thanks Rwilco12.
This official update is only available at present by downloading with Kies, due to issues with partitions on this JB release OTA is not an option at the moment.Important: This update was designed to simply upgrade the operating system of the device while leaving certain types of user data intact. This user data includes pictures, videos, messages and contacts. Certain settings, such as wallpaper and ringtone assignments, may be reset back to factory default. To be safe, it is best practice to always back up all data and assume that everything will be lost.
Below you will find options to backup contacts, messages and help to reinstall third party applications.
》》》》Restore procedure 《《《《
If you have a cwm recovery you can make a nandriod and use it later to restore content. If on ics or gingerbread not all content and/or data can be restored to Jb, it will create conflicts. Jb to Jb no problem.
If no custom recovery you can make copies of your sd cards to your PC, and restore content later.
If you follow ics to Jb procedure with stock firmware then all your data will be saved by Kies or the Samsung quick upgrade procedure.
Note: When you sync to your Google Gmail and Exchange ActiveSync® accounts, you are backing up your information. Google Gmail and Exchange ActiveSync information on your device including contacts are stored remotely on the Google and Microsoft Exchange server.

2.If prompted, sign in with your Google account credentials.
3.Paid applications will populate in the list shown.
To re-download Free applications you can visit market.android.com and log-in with your Google account information. All previously downloaded applications are listed in My Library
If I missed anything let me know and I will update or add as soon as possible.
******** Note ********
The only way no data (keeps user data intact) works is if your running a very close to stock or stock builds, rooted or none rooted, if on some highly modified rom or build like CM, Aosp and such you must use a full restore (wipes all user data) otherwise you have boot loops, stuck on logo, and what not.

That file is just a kernel, will be updating with a one click stock restore. One click opens on your pc and you put phone in d/l mode and connect to pc, after comm recognition you hit start.

So if I read that correctly, you or somebody else will create a one click to be able to restore? So for now I'll just have to wait until that time.

I'm currently on a leaked GB27 and i downloaded the stock restore you suggested to go back to FL24. Once i'm on FL24 are there any instructions on how to do the update through keis. I downloaded Keis to my PC but not quite sure what to do from there.

Yes, you could also just flash the FL24 kernel.
Just trying to keep is simple.

There's no difference between the leak and the official release? I've had so many issues with this phone and some of the ROMs I've tried that I've decided to try to stay as close to stock as possible.

The rooted /stock option will give you root and reliability, this Jb build has to be the most stable and reliable I have been on.
Soon you will have good choices with Jb custom roms, now that source is out. For now stock /rooted is the way to go.

[GUIDE] What to do if you get the UPDATE Notification (OTA) while rooted.

Ok, so I've seen this question asked I don't know how many times in each Rom at the Dev Section and also in the General Forum so I decided to make a quick guide.
- If you're on any ROM or even stock rooted and get prompted to update to the new update you can do a couple things.
1.- If you don't already have Titanium Back up, Download it from the market and FREEZE Device Management. Once you freeze it just reboot and the update will go away. I was going to recommend Bloat Freezer, but I couldn't find it on the Market, not sure what's going on with that.
This is the easiest step * ** *
Titanium Backup - https://market.android.com/search?q=titanium+back+up&c=apps
*An alternative would be using Root Explorer -
Under System/ App/ wssyncmldm.apk Just delete.
Root Explorer - https://market.android.com/search?q=root+explorer&c=apps
2.- If you must have the update for some reason and don't want to just flash a ROM that's already 2.3.6, then it's best to go back to stock. UPDATE will not work unless you have STOCK RECOVERY on your phone.
To go back to stock refer to this Guide made by Jangst123.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321811
3.- You can also try to flash your nandroid backup and then Odin the stock recovery. You also might need the stock kernel if you had a custom one installed, in this case flash Stock kernel first before your nandroid.
Stock Kernel - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2510030/kernel-stock.zip
4.- If you're only rooted with the stock Rom you can try to update without doing anything, but you will lose Root. There has been reports that it has worked for some, but not for others.
Be Careful with what you decide to do!!
== The update you are getting is NOT ICS, it is an update to 2.3.6 and for the Wifi Calling App. == In order for Wifi calling to work you MUST have the New Sim card that came with the phone. If you don't have one go to your T-mobile store and get one. =
*** If you rather just get the Baseband/Modem by itself then you can get it from here http://rootzwiki.com/topic/11883-odin-tmo-sgsii-modem-collection-eam-kang12142011/
Thanks to Team Kang.
Hope this HELPS, now if people only used the SEARCH engine. I think I'm going to make a guide on how to use it, LOL.
*I am not responsible if you damage your expensive phone in any way. Use this guide at your own risk.*
Or....... just use free es file explorer on market ( don't forget to enable root under its settings ) and backup/delete both wssync apk's under /system/app. Then reboot
Takes less than 2 minutes and can be done without odin, firmware flashing, ect

Bloat Freezer is definitely not an app to use for freezing the Device management app anymore. An earlier forum post pointed out that it's been pulled from the market, and as this article cites, with good reason. Alternatives suggested are SystemCleanup, NoBloat, and as the OP pointed out, Titanium Backup.
Good Luck..
thank you for the thread
Hi, i went back to stock everything, and i haven't had a prompt for the update yet. I updated previously, is that the reason why?
= The update you are getting is NOT ICS, it is an update to 2.3.6 and for the Wifi Calling App. == In order for Wifi calling to work you MUST have the New Sim card that came with the phone. If you don't have one go to your T-mobile store and get one. =
Ok what if the next update is ICS and i'm rooted and I want to update? Will it mess anything up if It tries to update?
Thanks, a simple guide with an easy solution.

Thank you for the heads up. I read that article and seems like this Trey guy is a bit shady. Which one do you use jasnn? I plan on buy Titanium backup in the near future before I start loading custom roms, but I am looking to leave the stock rom for now and just get rid most the t-mobile preinstalled stuff. Do you have Download Manager 2.3.6?
If so try that one.
Are you already on 2.3.6? Because I noticed Device Management is no longer there once I updated to 2.3.6.
But you're on Sprint, so not exactly sure what it's called.

Please help find solution

Hello,
Thanks all for the great site, sorry to ask this if its all ready been asked but there is so much information here I just cannot make sense of it all and don't where to begin.
I am working on the Galaxy nexus GSM for an employee and we had to unlock and root it to get rSAP working with his car.
I found here a one click solution (cannot find it anymore) after installing the Android SDK and finally getting the Drivers right (not easy) it worked and I unlocked the phone and rooted it. rSAP works!!
Unfortunately this set the phone back to default.
Now the employee is constantly receiving the 4.0.2 update notification (cannot turn off?) what he cannot install (dead android guy every time)
So my question is, what is the best way I can update the phone to 4.0.2 without losing all the data, apps and settings and then make sure the update notification reminder is turned off?
Thanks for any help!

I would load the latest AOKP rom, you can find it on here. Then he won't get any update notifications and it has Google autorestore feature which means once he logs into the device his apps and settings will be restored. Would that help? AOKP rom will bring the device up to 4.0.3 by the way. You will still be able to use the ASDK to install drivers etc.
Hi, thanks for the lighting fast reply..
I tried a search but cannot find that ROM, could you maybe point in the right direction?
will installing that ROM delete everything?
Yeah it will because you should wipe data and cache before flashing in CWM recovery. Do a backup of everything with Titanium before wiping. I wouldn't bother backing up apps cos the autorestore will download them and install automatically once your user logs in.
Here you go
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402341
Be sure to flash the GApps zip file straight after flashing the rom. You know what I mean?
Let me know how you get on. I also modded the Kernel, I am using Franco's and it is insane.
Hi Jd,
I really am a noob and do not think I can undertake such an action..
The instructions there are very minimal...
Let me put it is this way - Is there any way I can easily ensure that the update notification is turned off - without having to wipe the phone and start over?
Cheers for the help man!!

Unfortunetly not afaik. Someone told me you can mess around with an updater-script file but like yourself I am pretty much a noob to so I don't know.
I would repost and have the topic as something like "disabling ota update notifications" and then link to this post. There is a good chance that someone here will know a solution. That is if there is one John, I have not heard of one though. Best of luck.

Never said it did
Erm, I would definitely not install a custom ROM onto someone else's phone, with or without their consent unless the phone owner was technologically-minded and knew their way around the phone! I would assume that since they offloaded their issue to someone else, they do not belong to that group.
What I would suggest is to keep it as stock as possible. Grab the factory 4.0.2 maguro image (ICL53F) from Google (http://code.google.com/android/nexus/images.html). Back up apps and app data & SMS (I wouldn't bother with system data, I've only had problems when restoring this afterwards) using Titanium Backup. If there's only minimal user installed apps without any useful data, just letting Google's servers restore missing apps should be fine in lieu of Titanium Backup. Make a nandroid (via CWM) in case something hits the fan when you're flashing.
Once you've done all of this, flash the factory image and reapply root. The phone should now be on 4.0.2 (removing annoying update notifications) and will still receive future OTAs instead of being stuck on a static version of a custom ROM(!!!). I have heard that CWM can cause troubles with OTA updates so I would remove it once you've completed all of this as it's likely the client won't need it anyway (drop reboot-from-recovery.p back into /system/ and it'll restore stock recovery). Oh yeah don't forget to install Titanium Backup (stop all other app downloads in the market for now), restore apps and SMS. Done.
If you don't know how to flash the factory image, follow this tut: http://androidtobe.blogspot.com/2011/12/galaxy-nexus-installing-ics-402-from.html

THAT is the best advice in this thread, keeps the phone stock and up-to-date so the only time he'd get an update notification is when 4.0.x is pushed out
The ONLY thing I'd say is if you don't wanna lose the data, when you get to step 6 of the guide linked to above leave the -w switch from the update line. So instead of typing:
fastboot -w update image-yakju-icl53f.zip
You'd type:
fastboot update image-yakju-icl53f.zip

wow must admit that is pretty big of you and nice going. also have to say his lack of response from the forum was probably because he had to be about the 20th person to ask that same thing. I know it can be difficult to find things sometimes but I am a firm believer in a thorough search and that includes going page by page prior to posting.
nice to see things work out at xda.... Also I am the guy who posted a FOTAkill.zip file thats flashable to stop the OTA updates. Hopefully you found what you are looking for but if not just search for the zip I mentioned or look in UnNamed's thread in development
cool I didn't know you made a zip to do it. thanks.
I installed FOTAkill.apk a while back.
I have a Sprint Samsung Epic Touch.
I am running Rooted Stock EK02 and when the latest EL29 came out it was crappy. I went back to my Stock EK02 and kept getting the OTA update. I installed FOTAkill. Its been a few weeks.
My question is, Does simply removing the fotakill.apk from EDIT /system/app (i think thats where i removed it from) completely remove it or is that just the install app and the program is installed permanently and i cant remove it.
I ask because there is another potential update coming soon that seems to have a better modem package. I try to stay as basic stock as possible.
But this is my first time to want to remove a program like that. Its not showing up like other installed apps (duh because its a system app) so does removing the apk from that location remove it or is it still installed?
I don't know really. I haven't used the apk. but you can nAndroid backup and try it. couldn't hurt.

Can you share the apk or is it Market thing? I will test it. Also check in data/data to see if there's a folder there. If not, it should be gone

Remember all you will be doing is flashing the updates so removing this does nothing for you in that sense. If you have rooted your phone I am sure you will get the rooted versions and DO NOT DOWNLOAD OTA... You rooted for a reason

Jellybean Information

Hi everyone! A Jellybean OTA has been released for Google I/O, so in order to keep things organized all new discussions about it will be redirected here. Please keep in mind that this is a developer preview, as such it will likely have bugs and you must root in order to install it. If you don't wish to root you'll need to wait for Google or Samsung to release an OTA for your device.
If you have anything you feel should be linked here feel free to shoot me a PM with it.
Cheers!

Sorry, I wasn't able to edit my post for a long time & hope now that I can add a few more information from time to time.
Hello everybody,
I'm on stock Jelly Bean with official Jelly Bean bootloader + radio and want to tell you about my experience with it (There is a link in the first post to the tutorial for stock Jelly Bean).
Basic Information
I have not noticed any bugs with this ROM. The system is way smoother compared to any Ice Cream Sandwich version (Mostly the animations. The App Drawer animations is now completely fluid . Many things that have annoyed me in ICS have been fixed and new some new functions have been added.
Biggest differences between ICS and JB:
This part will be a little bit messy because I'm going to change it a little bit but I really don't have that much time so I will do it in parts
Changes in Settings:
- Data Usage Graph is now linear, like in CM9
- Wi-Fi Direct has now an option menu
- WPS-Pin and Push Button Configuration is now supported
- The account-settings are now a seperated category in the settings
- Developer options have been rearranged and new ones have been added
- Some benchmarks are better:
- Some benchmarks are worse:
- Now there's an arrow downwards instead of the back button when the keyboard is opened:
- There is an other lockscreen animation and you can access google now from lockscreen:
- new animations:
- access google now instantly by swiping up from the home button:
- Process of adding a new word to the dictionary have been optimized:
- New Wallpapers:
- New Search-Bar:
- New Radio and Bootloader:
- New Boot-Animation:
- Homescreen objects rearrange when you add an widget automatically:
- New Google Music App:
- New Youtube App:
- New Google Maps app:
- New Voice Search app:
- Contacts with a higher resolution:
- Expandable Notifications:
- Completely redesigned nofication bar:
- New animations in gallery app
- Optimized Camera app:
- New programm-chosing-menu:
- If you want a tutorial or more information about jelly bean just write your questions here. I will update this post afterwards.
Questions:
Is google now english only? :
- No. I just asked a few questions in german. It gave me search results but I it just list sites with the answers. No knowledge graph in german. But it shows me my weather and my route to work with tiles
What happens if you enable/disable WiFi Direct for 5-10 times in a row? In ICS, after a couple of times toggling WiFi Direct the wifi driver crashed and I needed a reboot in order to make WiFi and WiFi Direct work again:
- Sorry I don't have another Wifi-Direct device to test this feature at this time.

or flash JRN84D-insecure-boot.zip from recovery

Jellybean OTA released!
Gallary : https://www.dropbox.com/sh/aqvteoek9k8ewwq/yzKZD-V6vJ
Some small changes that were not announced:
THE BAD: Navigation is still Gingerbread looking. Background gradients are still pixelated. Most importantly, NO PINCH TO ZOOM IN GMAIL! WTF Google?
The multitasking drawer loads faster when you press the button, but it makes you wait on the dimmed screen while it load the app screenshots. It gives the illusion of being faster.
Different animation based on how you switch to an app (ICS had only one)
Hotword Detection: launch voice search when you say "Google" (when you are running google now)
Jelly bean easter egg
New Developer options:
SD card privacy protection (won't come into effect before the next major release)
Animator duration scale (the window and transition animation options are still there)
Disable HW overlay (not sure what this one is)
etc
In contacts, there is a "Auto-sync app data" option that I think wasn't there before.
Messaging app widget!
New Contacts icon
New share action and intent picker pop out (big icons instead of a list)
Default font seems to be a little thinner than ICS Roboto in some places
NOTIFICATIONS CAN BE DISABLED. This one is a godsend. You can long press on notifications to get the info of the sender app (useful for detecting spam apps)
When keyboard is active, the back button turns into a downward arrow (just like tablet ICS).
WPS PIN setup for Wifi
Wifi-direct has more options (like CM9)
"Add-on dictionaries" : it's empty now until 3rd party keyboards leverage the new API. (I think you would be able to get dictionaries from play store in the future)
Kernel is based off 3.0.31 (ICS was 3.0.8)
Google play music has been updated (Nexus Q settings link, better interface, etc)
Keyboard shortcuts (example: brb expands to "be right back"). Catching up to Apple much Google?
NO ROOT RESTRICTION ON GOOGLE PLAY MOVIES!. I wonder how they pulled this off without compromising DRM.
SAFE BOOT: long press on "Power off" (in the menu that shows up when you long press power button) to get into this mode. Only system apps will be loaded (should come in handy when dealing with rogue apps)
Screen seems to be better calibrated. The colours are more neutral and less yellow.
Came from CM9.
Wiped data and dalvik.
Installed ROM. Everything is perfect. JB is incredible
Wifi doesn't work

so i backed up my apps with galaxy nexus toolkit before the downgrade and flashing method and after flashing i cant seem to get it to restore the apps through the toolkit. is there a restore option from the phone itself while its connected? in the toolkit it just hangs and doesnt prompt on screen. i had to setup the wifi with a static ip but it kept saying avoiding due to bad signal so i uncheckmarked that setting and now im getting TERRIBLE wifi coverage where i used to get moderate. anyone have any ideas on either of those problems? im also standing right next to the router.. currently restoring nandroid and starting the whole process over but instead with just koush
I cant acces to my recovery, i flashed the koush version and since then i cant access my recovery. I use the toolkit and my phone is not recognized by it in fastboot mode, but in adb yes. I dont have root, i have booting rom but no way of coming back

i ended up flashing koush on top of my original ics 4.0.4 without wipe and it works great! works as if it was a legit OTA. also noticed wifi didnt require static ip change and a slight improvement for the wifi. im loving the new google search! better than siri still playing with it and thanks to all that put their time into this! nexus FTW

The keyboard expansion where "brb" expands to "be right back" doesn't work.
Also, the voice search I think has gotten worse... the cards don't seem to work properly (aside from weather) and saying things like "Listen to Hello by Lionel Richie" and "Map of nearest gas stations" just returns google web search results.

ION ROM/MOD Roger JB Stock Prerooted and Flashable in Recovery, UB/LB

This is my first Rom/Mod for Android, a flashable (in recovery) prerooted version of the latest stock Roger Jelly Bean for LT28i. Prerooted and debloated with extreme privacy in mind. Removed were all face book, all social apps, all google apps including gsf and others. I even removed stock Messaging and Conversations. I recommend instead K9 Mail and TextSecure both free and available on the internet.
Other than rooting and debloating, no changes have been made. Since Sony hasn't released the official non-branded jelly bean version for LT28i, this rom/mod should help the users.
Again, this is the latest prerooted Xperia LT28i Roger's Jelly Bean stock, which as of today still can't be rooted post installation.
WARNING: If you soft/hard brick your phone, it is NOT my fault. Do it at your own peril. If you feel like complaining, NSA might listen.
Usual Instructions:
1. Enter Recovery;
2. Triple Format (format System, Cache, Data)
3. Flash Roger zip.
If you were on JB Kernel before, you are done, just Reboot and enjoy.
If you were on ICS, don't reboot, instead turn off your phone and do the following:
4. Flash JB Kernel from either Rogers or LT28h stock ftf. Untick everything and exclude everything, but kernel.
This is the download link:

To download, put your cursor on the file and click the arrow/download button on the right.
Enjoy.

I thought since I haven't made any changes to stock firmware, there is no need for screen shots. Once you reboot, you will see the usual JB screen and you'll have Superuser in your application drawer. You will also have E (as 2g), 4g (as 3g) and Lte, which is still smarter than AT&T's combined 4g icon. You will notice a much better battery life, especially that this disgusting google services framework that is basically connected to "home" all the time and records/transmits everything you do with your phone is gone. In my view, any "home" application, such as gmail, gplus, youtube, facebook or else, have just one purpose: to spy and record all your activities. You don't need those to access the associated services.
Here is a screenshot of my battery life. I am able to get 24 hours on a single charge with about 1 hour of voice calls over wifi and 4g, wifi on 24/7, 2 sip accounts active 24/7, moderate internet usage, messaging and K9 mail client on 24/7 (synching 5 mail accounts). Note WIFI taking 16% and Csipsimple (sip client) 13%. If I only use cellular voice calls, I get about 31-32 hours, which is pretty decent.
Moderators, I know you would want to move this post to the battery life section, but please don't, The purpose of this here is to illustrate my point on getting rid of social apps, google apps and google services framework and their effect on battery life.
looks and sounds really good!
but I'd recommend a better Rom name...for example slim stock jb or something like that...
Not sure the development section is the best place for a stock ftf file.
Yes I know it is pre rooted,
but DooMLoRd has made a windows script to root stock jelly bean.
And to get LTE you just flash the ICS lt28i baseband.
Also in order to get CWM recovery on your ION it needs to be rooted already.
For now, as this thread contains NO development, this thread is moved to the general section.

With all due respect, but
1. This is not an ftf file, but rather a zip flashable in CWM;
2. DoomLord's script CANNOT root Roger's LT28i jelly bean
3. Flashing LTE from ISC results in a buggy LTE connection, which indicates that apparently there are changes in JB LT28i radio
4. "in order to get CWM recovery on your ION it needs to be rooted already" That is true for any other rom/mod posted in development section. You can't get CWM unles you have root.
Right now, there is no way to root Roger's JB and the same is the only official release for LT28i. So, my mod/rom is the only way to have prerooted JB for LT28i (as opposed to LT28h).
Kindly return this thread to development section.

Thank you for great efforts, but this one is too clean that I cannot enable H/H+/E/G at non-LTE areas (not sure why). Without stock browser and google play causes nothing can be downloaded after boot. Is it possible to add them back? Many thanks. Without Busybox I cannot install CWM recovery for any local zip either.

OK. He posted that in Xperia S section, but his regular kit didn't do the job. That is why I made the pre-rooted version, which is also extremely debloated.
And please forgive me if you can for misspelling LT28 for LT29. Also, allow me to make a suggestion: get rid of the list of crossed out devices that you put in every post.

For non LTE, you need to flash Roger basebands, i.e., flash it using flashtool: untick everything and exclude everything, but baseband. You will then have H/H+ and LTE. You can get naked browser, which is the best, at nakedbrowser dot com/android. This is the only browser that I know that won't connect to the internet unless you start it. Also, it wouldn't connect to a bunch of other remote sites for spying purposes, as all other browsers do (including firefox). You know that firefox gets its dough from Google, so they'll sell you out in a minute and for good. Nakedbrowser is also very fast (for the same reason as it only connects to the site you choose). You can download naked browser on PC, then transfer it to your SD card and install it there. Or you can install it with flashtool. Transfer the file to your c://flashtool/custom/apps directory, then start flash tool, click apk installer (curved arrow) and install it. Busybox is available on the internet.
You don't need googleplay to have any application that is available there. To have googleplay (and GSF- google services framework, which should be read as google spying framework) defeats the purpose of debloating. If you don't want to waste your battery and have your every activity recorded and transmitted to Google/NSA, you need to get rid of google play/gsf.
By the way, this is my latest battery usage: over 24 hours on a single charge and still left 10%. That including about 40 minutes of talking over sip, constant wifi, two active sip accounts, constant data, moderate internet usage, moderate messenger usage and synching 5 mail accounts 24/7.
tried it, had to go back to blackzax's due to the lack of play store and browser(I dont have wifi available at the moment and my internet pretty much sucks so i cant download the play store apk). Great effort, but maybe you could make another one with the playstore and a browser(or maybe just the play store).
Can you report any bugs on this firmware(aside from the ones listed on the bug thread).

well...if you guys want Google apps, just install them manually. it is not that hard. this his the Rom by optimumpro and we should be happy that he has shared this Rom.
That's right. Google apps are widely available including xda site. But installing them would defeat the purpose of this room. In other words, if anyone wants Google apps, they don't need my mode/rom.
