Need help troubleshooting battery drain issue - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello guys.
I'm stumped at a battery drain issue that my wife's been having on her S3.
After doing my own standard tests like BBS, disabling bloat, checking running services, etc. , the only thing that caught my eye was that her device stays at high cpu (900mhz range) for way too long. When checking the cpu stats usung System Panel, I noticed that her cpu never dips below 500mhz, but cpu usage is low (3% or so).
How do I find out what's triggering the cpu clock to jump?
She's unrooted, which I know doesn't help with troubleshooting, but I don't want to mess around with her phone.
I should add that she has very few third party apps and they are all big name apps like evernote, Dropbox and Sugarsync.
Any help would be appreciated.

Drop box v2 onwards has an auto upload feature for any pics/videos you take. Try disabling that or moving to 1.x versions. I realized this when my wife's db account said it was approaching limit trying to upload her HD videos.

Thanks. Her Dropbox is set to never sync. She has Sugarsync for backing up photos and videos, but that's only when charging.
The problem isn't cpu usage, but the cpu clock speed never slows down and doesn't deep sleep the way it should.

how recent is this issue?
when did she update to 4.1.1?

She got the phone over two months ago and all updates were done then. She's had great battery life, but has been complaining about battery life for the last two weeks or so. She's been using a pebble watch with it, but I'm quickly having doubts that the watch is the cause of this drain.
Even now, I've had her phone sitting next to me and deep sleep is only 74%.

If it is checked, uncheck it.
Here's the difference in battery life -
About half the battery drain with the option unchecked.

What are you talking about? Did you zoom in to see screen on/awake usage? Both are about 7.5 hours of idle time.
I updated my phone to JB and followed the battery saving measures and the battery is dropping very quickly.
Before it could last up to 3 days in standby, now I'll be surprised if it lasts 8 hours.
I'll give it another day then try a factory reset if it does not improve.
Anybody else seeing this?
I have watchdog on the phone and it shows zero cpu off time.
Just install better battery stats, there is also a way to dump the same info in terminal but I don't use it. You are looking for alarms apps cause. It's most likely maps, followed by talk, exchange client, or anything like Twitter, FB,g+,stocks.... but most likely maps location settings

I have been doing a lot of research and the end result is that JB out of the box will eat your battery and yes disabling the settings under maps does in fact help a lot but there is a lot more you can do to get good life... for starters get the simple stuff out of the way, DELETE FACEBOOK MOBILE APP!!!...and twitter and anything that actively accesses the internet in the background... I know this may sound taxing but it is so worth it if yiu just make a bookmark in your browser and view it periodically than have an always active app... next if you are not in a primarily lte covered area set your phone to cdma only... go into settings and go to data usage and here you can see what is using data in the background I.e. facebook... and go there and check the restrict app box.., disable auto brightness and some have said that if you disable sprint connection manager thing you can do even more.... now that one I cannot be sure about I will post results in the coming days of what I find

You are pretty much correct the FB app sucks but I never really had much problems with it.
A lot of these tips though in general (not directed towards you) are stupid.
Like someone said a while ago I refuse to gimp my phone to sip a little bit more life out of it. What's the use of having a smartphone if you're not going to use it like one.
I always have high brightness unless its dark out. I broke my syncs intervals up to about 4 hours per sync and have push notifications from twitter and weather.
With those apps all I have to do is refresh when I enter the app having those syncing all the time is worthless unless you're constantly checking every 10 seconds.
I say I get fairly decent battery life granted I'm on wifi most the time and 7-8 hours with about 2 hrs screen on playing HD games youtube poweramp and my background processes.
Well in regards to the act of extending the life of your battery these are simply tips that you can utilize in the event you are someone who is out for extreme amounts of time.... I average anywhere from 13 to 17 hrs of battery life with 100% brightness, wifi 3g all of my favorite apps... instagram xda kik kindle Skype etc. And 5 to 6 hrs of screen on time. .. so these gimping tactics more than double my phones live time and doubles my life.... but hey if you can get to a charger after 8hrs by all means but for the most part I cannot until after 13 but i do in fact appreciate your incite

Also even though you are disabling sone of these apps like google now.... you can still use it your just turning off the background nonsense

Even with changing that setting in Maps I still am not getting the same battery life as I did with ICS. Maps is still coming up as my most used app when I check battery usage even though I rarely use it. Wonder if it may be Google Now causing Maps to keep running.

Oh wow. Sorry from my phone I couldn't zoom in. I see now lol. Thought I saw 90 and 89 or something like that
I had the Maps setting turned off for a few days and also had A LOT of stuff disabled, but unfortunately my battery life (and my wife's as well) wasn't as good as ICS, and quite a bit worse actually.
Sadly, today, it looks like I figured out what the killer is:
Google Now.
This morning, 100% charged, I turned it off. My wife (who still had it on) and I were out and about together for about four hours, we both barely used out phones for that time. When we got home I checked both phones: I was at 96%, she was at 80%.
The only difference that I hadn't already accounted for:
Google Now.
So, unfortunately, it looks to me like one of the two biggest reasons for wanting JB in the first place (Butter being the other of course) turns out to be a big battery hog I don't yet know if there's maybe some setting within it that is a specific problem or if it's the whole thing in general... maybe you just need to disable a card or change an update frequency or something (I didn't touch any so I'm running whatever the defaults are), I don't know yet... but all indications are that's where the problem lies.
That, my friends, sucks.
Well since my phone has calmed down I am getting 13-16 hr easily. Brightness maxed of course and about 4-6 screen on time I will never cripple my phone. Hell I bought it so I can use not to look at. Lol thanks for the post of this though if I'm ever I. A die hard , situation I'll know what to do

Google Now uses the "Report from this device" and "Enable location history" maps location settings to determine your driving patterns so it can suggest alternative routes and report traffic delays. Disabling "Enable location history" will disable the driving pattern suggestions completely.
FWIW Settings | More settings | Mobile networks | Network mode
Changing from "CDMA" to "LTE / CDMA" has gained me better battery life. My wife also noticed the same.
(To save time, I'm cutting & pasting my post from another similar thread.)

"I have had my Galaxy S3 for a week now. Battery life stabilized after the initial syncing, etc. I updated to Jelly Bean v4.1.1 two days ago, and battery life didn't seem noticeably different. However, that was until today. My phone was off of the charger, around 10AM, and had < 5% charge by 4:30PM. I was very busy, so I was hardly using the phone all day. It was in my pocket or on my desk most of the time. One of the only settings I changed last night, was enabling 'Use wireless networks' and enabling 'Location and Google search' under 'Location Services' in 'Settings'. I just disabled both settings, and will see if the battery drain is any less tomorrow. Also, Google Now was off, and was never enabled on my phone. I'll try to post the results, if at all possible..."
So, for me, it seems to be Location Services may have caused my poor battery life, and was definitly not Google Now, as it was never enabled. I'll try using the phone with the settings off, and see if that changes anything...

I do love Jelly Bean; as it is ICS only improved or enhanced. But battery life has definitely taken a hit. I can barely make it through 24 hrs. On ICS I could do a day and a half to two days with really light use. I've tried just about everything mentioned with little change. Good thing I have an extra battery. Thank you Samsung for making a phone with a user replaceable battery.
Thanks for all the ideas/suggestions anyways,
El Mono
I noticed the huge difference as well. I was walking around Chicago yesterday and not using my phone. After 4 hours I looked and my battery was at 50 %.

Battery Life Question

I have happy with my battery life but only getting about 12 hours a day. And I read people getting a day and a half? That's ridiculous! Maybe your full brightness has something to do with that.

Coming from someone who LOVES bright screens... unless you're nearly blind, there's absolutely no reason why anyone needs to constantly be running their Note 2's screen at full brightness. Auto-brightness is extremely efficient, and if you don't like how the phones native auto-brightness feature manages things, there's many third party apps which can do it better. Full brightness will kill anything on a battery, from a laptop to a cell phone.

Full brightness can cut your screen on time in half. There is no reason to turn off data when connecting to wifi, it's already off. This is android, constantly killing apps will waste your battery even more.

Why is that killing apps right after use drains your battery? I have come from iPhone so I thought it would just increase it. Also, since apps are running in the background why wouldn't background apps killing your battery? And if I shouldn't kill them right after use, when should I kill them?

i'm very pleased with battery life on my device. i'm using a deodexed, rooted stock ATT 4.1.2 ROM, with stock kernel, Power Mode off, brightness set to about 40% and screen mode set to Natural. i don't use task killers, battery managing apps, etc. my usage is mainly email, calls, web surfing and listening to music (when i have time).
on an average work day, i can get 16-20 hours per charge with 6-9 hours screen time, about 150 emails (4 exchange accounts all set to push 24/7) and 35-90 minutes in phone calls. at the end of my average day i'll have 15-25% battery left before it's on the charger again. there are days when my usage is above average and battery life will be lower. fortunately, for me, i have wifi available and strong phone signals where i work. the pictures below are an example of an average workday: 15 hours, with 8 hrs screen time, 62 minutes of call time and there's 31% battery left. most of the screen time was related to reading/replying to emails, web browsing and texts.
the OP doesn't mention their expectations beyond getting 12 hrs on a single charge and how he/she uses the device on a daily basis. that will surely factor into their respective experience.

Background apps aren't necessarily doing anything. This isnt windows, Android is unix based, unused ram is wasted ram. The system loads apps into the ram so you can switch back and forth easily.
An app isnt constantly doing stuff in the background unless it is intended (like utorrent or music), or the app is badly made(I'm looking at you weather channel). Your ram is always on, no matter how full it is it will always use the same amount of power, when you're in deep sleep your apps are frozen and not actively running. Killing all your apps just means the next time you use the app it has to be read from internal storage and loaded into the ram instead of already being there in the first place, this actually uses more power. Some apps wont even stay closed and will immediately reopen anyways.
Tl; dr Android has ways of freezing apps when not in use, killing apps just means they have to be loaded again on next use which uses power. Some apps are broken and wake up all the time, use betterbatterystats to help find them.
The only solution is to use something like betterbatterystats and find the crap apps that are breaking deep sleep.

[Q] Relatively unfair battery drain issue (Running stock JB 4.1.2 XXDLL4)

Or so I've come to believe it's unfair anyway, I just don't get how some people achieve 19+ hours or so on battery life, with 'heavy' usage as well like they claim.
I have posted some battery usage screenshots if it might be of any help.
When I was using the phone out of the box with an earlier stock firmware, it was the same as of now, even after my current XXDLL4 update. I always kill background apps, from ram and from running tasks, turn GPS off and other unused features, e.g. NFC, S beam, you name it. Like for example with these screenshots, I was using the phone moderately all day, a bit of browsing, some phone calls and a few games. Is 3 hours of screen time supposed to be normal with this battery reading? I don't get it Is there anything I can do to get these long hour performances on battery that everyone else seems to be getting with their note 2?
Im on stock unrooted 4.1.2 rom. Battery life was decent until I went to settings, application manger and then to all and disabled apps that I don't use including some widgets. Eg Simple alarm, learning hub, remote controls, Samsung sync etc and battery is significantly better.
With Whatsapp and Facebook running on the back ground all the time. .. I still manage to get 6hrs screen time.
However you must understand battery life is very much subjective to your signal strength, usage and the apps running in the background. Generally 4 to 5hrs on screen time with heavy usage such as 3d gaming etc is considered pretty good.
As long your phone can get through the day with a single charge, I would say that's good enough and enjoy every features of the phone without worrying about battery life
Hope I helped.

Are u able to identify what are the apps constantly running in your background?
I highly suggest u to do these few things for now.
1) update your rom to the latest 4.1.2 rom provided in your country. Go to settings, about device and go to software update or download Samsung kies, connect your phone to samsung kies if you have the latest stock rom.
2) Turn off sync.
3) Run through all your apps settings and phone settings. Turn off unneeded notifications
4) Go to application manager, scroll to all and disable whatever stuff you dont use. If it breaks something, just re enable it.
5) After all of above, go to application manager again, scroll to running applications and see what is running in your phone background.
6) if you have problems with media scan, go to application manager. Scroll to all and clear cache of the following apps. Download provider, downloads, media storage, gallery and drm protected storage and reboot the phone.
Another small tip is I diabled google search, Dropbox, disabled online search under contact settings, disable sync with wifi in gallery settings, disabled talkback, turn off all notifications in google plus settings. Turned off Facebook notofications and auto update.

I think your stats are okay. Because you're using H+. If you switch to 2G you'll see massive gain in backup.
Besides, 4.1.2 literally killed 15-20% backup from 4.1.1, don't know what was ****ing point, but Samsung did it! Just keep monitoring via Better Battery Stats, which apps/process are causing wakelocks, and then do the needful.
'Swyped' from my GT-N7100
It seems like there is too much wakelocks, judging by your stats. You are not rooted, right? If so, it's impossible to diagnose the wakelocks without simply guessing and eliminating which app is causing them.
The maps wakelock caused by Google now, along with AudioOut_2 and media scanner are among the most dire. The first can be "fixed" by disabling location services.

Just for your information. Your battery performance really below par which note 2 it should be.
2hours plus on screen time and 10 hours operating time left 5% was totally unacceptable.
With super heavy use, note2 at least must be able to last 10hours++ with 3.5 hours on screen with 20% left.
( with 3g, wifi and gps always on. Continuos download 2 movies using qvod for about 2 hours)

Battery consumption while Browsing/Gaming/Deep Sleep

As the title states I want to know what are the values in mA/h or %/h you get while doing some stuffs and what ROM/Kernel/Settings are you using. I will appreciate any information provided. I know there are many threads about battery consumption but no data for real comparison.
I often get around 30% usage per hour while gaming on Modern Combat 4 online. General use like browsing often consumes 8-15% per hour. For idle time I get on average 0.3-0.8%h and lower on airplane mode.
Hope that helps.
P.S. these aren't guesses, but measured rates using Battery Monitor Widget.

Thank you very much. I also use this app for measuring consumption and lately I see some strange numbers. About 17%/h while browsing and 1-3%/h in Deep Sleep mode with nothing running in background and 2G mode. Also in gaming I see 20-40%/h depending the game.

I also get strange values, but perhaps that's related to the fact that the app updates it's values every 10 minutes as a default. Maybe increasing the frequency will improve accuracy at the expense of some battery. For heavy gaming, it's possible that heat will increase battery usage as well.
I find the best calculated results are when I'm doing something for at least an hour and then see what values the app gives.

I agree. But I can't see why in Deep Sleep mode I experience high consumption lately.

Have you tried better battery stats to see of you have any excess wake locks or alarms?

Can you post a screenshot of your Settings -> Application Manager -> Running screen?
I often find apps running that don't produce wake locks, but I don't want running in the background anyways... Tune In Radio has been one... Google maps is another (and is responsible for a lot of battery drain when running for no good reason). I froze google maps with titanium backup and my battery improved quite a bit as wake locks reduced significantly.

Here is the screenshot.
EDIT: After taking this screenshot I lost 2% (in 9 minutes) just browsing through phone. Screen brightness around 1/4 of the bar and BMW is reporting 15%/h loss.

Looks like you're on a custom rom. Have you been able to compare your usage to others with the same rom?
Also, of you don't use svoice, consider disabling it. We're there any more apps running under the svoice app in that list?

Yes, keyboard and clock. The custom ROM is tweaked for better battery consumption and the stats is not comparable to others users, especially the numbers getting in Deep Sleep and browsing.
Here's my list after I've trimmed it down.
There are still several "optional apps" which I don't actually need, but they serve a purpose and I'm not concerned about their battery consumption.

You don't have the MAPServiceSamsung I have. Any idea what is this about?

I froze that in titanium. It's related to bluetooth messaging... like sms or something, but since I only use my bt headset for voice and listening to music, it hasn't ever been a problem disabling it.

I'll froze it then as I use BT only for connect to a headset.

Ridiculously high battery drain.

Installed wake lock detector and saw the app with the highest wake lock with Facebook. Or is it some other issue causing it? Should I just give it a clean format? Eg. Install a new ROM or reset everything.

Facebook is well known for this high wakelock.
Either uninstall it or hibernate it using Greenify.
If you want to keep the real time notification for FB, bear with this battery drain. Or perhaps find 3rd party facebook app.

Thing is, in the past, I didn't get this sort of battery drain even with fb installed. So I wonder if its other apps causing the drain. Will a restore back help?

Before you restore back, it's a good idea to try hibernate/uninstall the FB first.
If you still get high-battery drain, then the main culprit is not only the FB. Perhaps you've installed something else lately?
I always get high-wakelock for FB, even after fresh install the ROM.

I bought this phone back in may this year. Do batteries actually degrade this fast? I doubt so right?

Not at all. I bought my Note 2 sometime in August 2012. Still using it with the original / initial battery. It is working fine. You could check on the following factors that may be causing high battery drain:
1) Did you do a recent reset/flash. I noticed that everytime I do a fresh install the batteries take a couple of 2 days to settle down. Possibly due to heavy indexing.
2) Are you keeping the phone close to a heat / cold source. Temperatures beyond the normal threshold can lead to power drain.
3) Check running apps. - I see you are already trying wakelock detector and greenify.
4) If you have been using system tweaking tools, you may want to check your CPU governor settings. Sometimes, you may have accidentally set the min CPU threshold to a high value while playing with rooted s/w. Which could result in CPU being driven more leading to power drain.
5) Check signal levels, 3g usage, brightness settings etc.
1)install betterbatterystats- able to let u keep track whats wakelock and check deepsleep status.
2) install greenify- with this xda higly recommended app you able to hibernate any apps you want.
If problem still exist, replace new battery.
Good luck.
