BitTorrent is great. If I could download everything via BitTorrent (legally I mean) then that would be much better. If then everyone else used BitTorrent that would be great. In a BitTorrent client using the protocol you automatically have checksumming to ensure that there are no errors in the download, you have a download manager with resumable downloads, queueing and so on, what's not to like?
Update: I have mirrored the latest factory images for both Toro variants Sprint/Verizon. You will find the download links on my site: http://www.rorybradford.com/p/nexus-factory-image-torrents.html
you know you can grab the factory images straight from googles site with no torrent runaround, right?

Yeah of course but the point of this is to provide a torrent rather than a straight download. As I explained I think that torrents have many advantages. For example there is no need to checksum the download, also the downloads are resumable at any stage so if you have a slow internet connection a bit can be downloaded at a time or if you're running a torrent client on your phone and the connection is a bit unstable you will still be able to download it fully.
I appreciate you taking the time to set this up!

i think i tried that program before on my Gnex. I'll see how it does with the link in the OP. So the thing is though, you have to find a website with torrents to download, correct? because it isn't used for just downloading anything i would imagine.

most of use know how to use torrents, and those who don't can learn in probably 3 minutes from youtube.
most if not all rom devs and maintainers use their own sites or file-sharing sites like rapidshare and megaupload. it would be a lot easier for everyone including the devs to torrent the file.
basically i want to encourage more torrent use. since its even possible within the android os now we have no excuse.

Not really. From what I understand, using P2P technology is not itself disallowed, but using it to link to pirated or copyright-infringing materials is.
This comes up quite often... P2P systems exist, but many people can't use them from work, and they aren't always reliable.
Direct http downloads are the best way.

it could work as a complement to direct http download, 2 main advantages, 1 is usually much faster downloads are possible (if seeded fairly), other is that no captchas/countdowns/adverts to sit through. i'd say those alone are good enough reason to encourage use of torrents.
don't have to completely do away with direct downloads, but would be handy as an option for people who can use torrents.
also, how are torrents not reliable? they are more reliable than http downloads, thanks to checksumming! broken downloads are possible on direct download, not on torrent.

We have all had to sit and wait for ungodly download speeds for some of these roms and other things. Sometimes the download links are broken. And no one likes dealing with those download sites like mega upload.
Why don't we, as a community, run torrents for all of these things?
I almost always have a computer running torrents, and I have a seedbox at work. I would be more than happy to run torrents for the different files we have around here - Roms, kernels, themes, other patches, etc.
I searched around and couldn't find anything about using torrents as a community, but I think it would be a good addition. Are there any drawbacks that I'm just not aware of?

I seeded a couple in the past in the Thunderbolt forum and only like 2 people even used them. I would ask the devs first that way they can link your torrent file in their threads.
That is probably a good idea. Those files will be paused until I get permission from the devs.
please do not host/mirror any of those files without the DEV consent
and even if you do get the DEV consent, the DEV him/herself should seed their own files only, using any of the publicly available torrent sites

Let me first say i am NOT trying to ruffle any feathers, just an honest question.
Why would it matter who ends up seeding them if given developer consent?
it's just the way how things are run in XDA, DEVs wants to have control over their own files, in case of crap happens
we do however allow recognize DEV's little helper if he/she publicly announces one

I suppose this could be the problem with torrents, once it's seeded by one and spread it always has potential to be seeding by anyone. Suppose 'Jon' links 'Tom' the torrent, Tom isnt too familiar so Jon installs the ROM for him but Tom never stops seeding. It's out of anyones control at that point.
Regardless, I understand you're point.

That's what I meant by 100MB. I can't remember if it Box of Minus that only allows 100MB max per file which makes it impossible to upload these leaks and Touchwiz ROMs in general. I guess Miui and CM9 may BD possible if they are super slim

I personally use only Box now for all my phone stuff only: including all the Roms I've accumulated over time...There's an easy workaround for the 100MB thing: I just split my rom up after extracting with Root Explorer..For instance, with CM or AOSP roms, I just pull off the system apps, ans that usually gets me under 100MB right there. I just make a folder with each roms name for cloud storage, and make a quick little readme.txt file to remind me how to put it back together when I need it..(Larger, stockish Roms: same concept, just a little more separating. Where there's a will there's a way, I guess, and that free 50GB of storage was too hard to pass up: I still use dropbox too, but any .zip files are pretty much all going to my Box account.

Personally, because I do all this from my phone: I can use 7zip or winrar to do that, but I'm usually on my phone, not my pc, but yeah, if you're at your computer, halving the archive would be what's up.

Box.net (also .com now!) is 100mb/file now, but it used to be 1gb/file for free accounts. I have one if the latter but I find myself using dropbox more often at 28gb/100mb.
Maybe Tasker can split up archives and sync them on its own with the help of FolderSync...

I'd hardly say that glitch was stealing. Dropbox was offering the space for free, the glitch simply saved the user time, and the user & dropbox bandwidth. If anything, that was a benefit for dropbox (their bandwidth is not free), otherwise we all would have been recording videos with our phones staring out the window, upload to dropbox, and just as quickly deleted.

As a new user I just have to ask; why is the use of file hosts so common for things like RUUs?
It seems that in a community as large as this there would be plenty of people willing to seed torrents and it would make for far quicker downloads.
Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems like torrents are perfectly suited to the task.

I think they should move to torrents more too. Faster downloads and no waiting for a hosting site. Torrents have been improperly labeled as a surefire way to get infected when the exact opposite is true. You can see what files are included in the torrent you are downloading before you start. Torrents were also originally made to distribute Linux distros faster and without the hosting. Torrents are amazing and should be utilized more often.

But people will only download a torrent if it is featured in the OP. Nobody is dumb enough to download something that has the power to make their phone unusable without doing some research.
-
I'm totally here for this, and I have an idea to make it effective: or a developper should first upload to a host, then build a userbase to download the updates via torrent. Since any new rom won't get immediate user support, the updates should get people going seeding since a more stable release equals more users (thus more seeds).

I have never gotten a virus from a download or torrent or even downloaded one. The best defense is to only download something you are sure is from a reputable source which would be the case if most developers posted a torrent link in their OP. I don't think there is any increased danger between using a torrent over a file sharing site in fact it could even be much safer.
Torrents FTW!
I've come across a few who provide torrent downloads, guess it's a personal choice.
Quite frankly I agree. A lot of so called file hosts I have seen being used (like when I downloaded a Jellybean ROM for my Samsung Infuse) have been either painfully slow (one host was so slow it was measured in BYTES per second!), or the download limits of the host were insane. If torrents were used, it would make downloading so much easier.
Don't forget that some people are on networks that disallow use of ANY "file sharing" networks. I got kicked off my college network for a few days and had to promise never to use bittorrent again after i connected to the campus network with my laptop downloading a Linux distro in the background.
