Hello. I'm planning to get a Galaxy Nexus and I'm wondering if it will suit my needs. What I want to do with it is make it my sole communication and social hub with some productivity tools running in the background.
What I would be doing:
Running apps in the background - Adobe reader, Dictionary, Evernote, MX Player, Currents
- I would be occasionally switching between these apps but I would just like them to run in the background
Frequent app switching - Go SMS, Tweetcaster, Flipboard, FB, Google+, KakaoTalk, Email
Do you think the 1.2 GHz dual core and 1 GB RAM of the Gnex would be sufficient for my needs?
I don't have any intention of rooting it. I also am not planning to get a Nexus 4 after all the scary problems that I discovered with it on the web.

I am not sure what's your intention to keep them all running in the background.
When there is not enough memory, i feel like some apps that are running in the background automatically hibernate. So it takes about similar time to open if you don't run them in the background.
It's only a matter of a second or two as long as they run smoothly, though loading news in Currents is usually not so fast.
I would say galaxy nexus will do the job.
Well, if you're planning to keep the phone longer, I'd suggest something with 2gb of RAM, like an N4. Now if the money is the issue, GN will suffice.

I love the specs of the N4 but the problems that I found on the internet (auto-reboot, touch accuracy, etc.) are what's holding me back.
This is more a Dev phone. If you don't plan on rooting and unlocking then perhaps you should look into other devices.
If you plan on doing all of what you said on this phone be sure to get an extended battery

You say you have no intention of rooting. If you did you could install a custom such as xylon and flash a kernel such as ak kernel and your nexus would be a powerhouse. You could also by an extended battery for about 25 dollars to get all day battery life.

I know it's a dev phone but owning a Nexus S, I just think that the idea of "unskinned" android in Nexus devices really made a difference in the phone's performance.

I also don't know how to flash roms because I'm kind of afraid of the instabilities of those. But if you could recommend one that's really stable just like the stock android, then I could learn how to flash and go for that. The reason why I'm worried about it's instability is because I'll be using the phone for both personal and business use.

It's a "semi" issue.
I bought my wife an N4 and she has had zero issues. It's been running smooth for over a month and a half. It's a nice upgrade over the Gnex. Bigger battery, nice screen, better camera. I would say that if you can afford it, get it. Have you checked the N4 forum to see what people are saying?
Saying all that, I still like the Gnex a lot. I was using an HTC One S, but when I bought my wife the N4 I thought I'd give it a shot. It can do all the things you are planning. I did have some lag on stock, so decided to flash a few different Roms. Running the latest Paranoid Android and it's super smooth.
This was the easiest phone to unlock ever, as a Nexus should be.

About N4s viability : well its a Nexus :]
Android has come so far that even if you won't play with custom stuff or even root, you'll still have a quick, good experience and best software upgradability out there.
As for the money thing, I've bought the GN 2nd hand without any signs of usage for 280€ in December. If I wanted a N4 back then it would have been about 400 (if not a bit higher because of the lack of supply). 120€ minimal price difference wasn't worth it for me, I tend to switch phones yearly (sell one, get newer one 2nd hand when it looses it's max value drop).
No idea what your price on buying the GN is, so I can't really say anything, hope my experience can give you a bit of perspective.

I too would strongly urge you to rethink the N4 if it's in the budget. Stock vs. Stock, it's a better device than the Gnex, in my honest opinion. Play with one in person, and own it, so YOU can be the best judge of what you're getting. However, if you do decide on the Gnex, stock 4.2 runs very nicely on it (I have the Sprint Version, so 4.2.1.) and I don't think you'll be disappointed, but the N4 will definitely have more longevity than our beloved Gnex. Good luck with either decision you make!

I just checked the N4 forum and it scared me even more upon reading the post about its screen of death issue. What kind of lag did you experienced with it? It is just on the interface, apps, or app switching? I'm more concerned here about app/task switching from time to time.

I actually played with one alongside with the Gnex and I can't really tell the speed's difference in terms of their interface.

No lag with the N4, sorry. I meant I had some lag with my GNex running 4.2.2. My wife has never had any lag on her N4.
At the end of the day, you can't go wrong with either. I love the GNex, even though it's a bit long in the tooth. All depends on preference.

While the g'nex is still a solid device I'd also recommend N4. As for issues scaring you, keep in mind that the g'nex was also plauged with reported issues. Display problems, loose USB ports, failing hardware buttons, ect...
A friend of mine bought a N4 second hand a couple months ago and hasn't had any problems, while I haven't had any problems with my g'nex.

If you'll go to Galaxy forums, you'll see tons of problems there, but that doesn't mean every device is flawed. If you sell millions of phones, of course the error rate will be more apparent, specially if it's popular. Same goes for Nexus, buyers of those phones are more aware and they visit sites like xda, so it appears the issues are widespread.

I had just a little lag scrolling between home screens when I was on stock 4.2.2. No issues switching between applications or anything.
I rooted a couple weeks ago and have been running the latest Paranoid Android. Great battery life and zero lag.
Let us know what you decide. I definitely recommend unlocking and running a custom Rom if you get the Gnex.

Yes, I see that but the only reason why I think it's that really widespread is due to the fact that even if you just google N4 problems compared to GNex problems, N4 really does show up a number of it.

With regards to switching apps, on a daily basis, I heard that the GNex sometimes reload the app instead of "restoring the minimized state" of the app. Any experiences?

i tried Galaxy S2 and it's so fast and doesn't lose fps in any scrolling in any app but my sensation lose alot of fps .. Galaxy S2 have enabled HWA and GN with ICS have it too..but both of them have smooth scrolling or just SGS2??

I still think Galaxy S 2 is the smoothest Android phone out there and it's running Gingerbread. Wait until it gets ICS.
I'm kinda disappointed by Galaxy Nexus.
Scrolling with the S2 feels weird though. The scrolling animation is smooth, ill hand it that, but its as if its slightly behind the movement of my finger. Dont have that problem with the GN, which is also very smooth in every native app. Apps not yet optimized for ICS seem to be laggy from time to time, but its app depended imo.
Overall I prefer the GN.

Nah, I feel the Galaxy Nexus is smoother.
And ICS smoothness is overrated, it doesn't magically make the phone smoother at all, at best you won't notice any difference, but I imagine the phone being bogged down by a Touchwiz/ICS combo.

I didn't see any scrolling issues in 4.0.1 or 4.0.2.

There is definite lag. I can't use live wallpapers on the Nexus because of the slowdown. Quite annoying, but oh well.
Or maybe the app isn't optimized for ICS yet as the OS / device is relatively new?
Google can't control what app devs do.

Live walls at 720p....
Same problem on Rezound as well. By the way, aosp walls work a hell of a lot better than the retail ones. Lag is pretty much gone if the live wall does not scroll with launcher screen.
(Let me preface this with a pre-emptive statment that I love Android (had a GTab, currently have a TF. And I am not a "this phone rules, that phone sucks" kind of guy, these are simply my DISPASSIONATE--albeit subjective--observations.)
Call it minor or whatever, but I have to admit, the lag is one of the big reasons keeping me from getting the phone. I've tried them out in stores, all running 4.02, closed all programs, used static wallpaper, etc., and the screens lag. And almost every online video I've seen seems the same way.
Obviously it's not like the 1st generation Android phones (which truly had horrible lag), but still, I think it's kind of unacceptable in this day and age and on a $300 phone. The GS2 is noticeably smoother -- instantaneous, really. Smoother than any phone I've ever used, iPhone included.
I want to love this phone so much -- great screen, ergonomics, and, obviously immediate updates and dev support, but I'm having a hard time getting over the somewhat laggy response.
I had a GTab which, if you're familiar with them, positively sucked out of the box, but the ROMs were awesome and made it super smooth... Maybe the ROMs and/or updates will do the same for the GN.
Anyway, please re-read my first statement before you say, "well, then just get the GS2," or somesuch. Like I said, I'm not dissing the phone in any major way -- but I need to love this phone if I'm dropping $300...
I've gotten it very smooth with Cyanogenmod and Franco's kernel (smoothest by far). But I too feel the S2 is smoother. Wish they used the Exynos lol well when the S3 comes out I'll just sell this and buy that retail. Hopefully it comes to Verizon.

Omap can hold its own vs. Exynos. What you meant was the mali gpu.
Today I went into Verizon (got T-Mobile) but wanted to play with one and compare it to my ns, and the demo I played with was a bit stuttery ,I even wiped the phone in the store ,and was still stuttery/laggy my ns runs way smoother compared to the one I played with,I'm really hoping it was just that particular phone,cause if T-Mobile ever offers it subsidized I plan on getting it,but not if it runs like the demo I messed with today...bottom line I left Verizon today a bit disappointed...

Demo units aren't really a true representation of what the phone will feel like when you actually unbox it. It was being used by a bunch of other people who could of even installed apps of it. I have a NS and I can say the GN is just so much faster on ICS.

That has nothing to do with what I said. I have noticed that most apps run a lot smoother when I have force GPU acceleration on. Including Facebook, Groupon, Twitter, Netflix, etc.
This is what the OP was talking about and I offered a solution.
Also, 4.0.3 is a lot smoother than 4.0.2.

- fairly durable (compared to a certain fruit company's phone)

- no external SD (although you won't need it on most circumstances)

it's actually very easy if you use the galaxy nexus toolkit in the develpment section. It basiclly unlocks the bootloader, roots and installs cwm in one go.

There is no S-ON or S-OFF with non-HTC devices. Unlocking the bootloader is all that matters with this phone. You can flash radios, kernels, boot images, etc without needing all the extra hassle needed for an HTC device.
Hello all!
I got my GN on Friday, this is the first spare time I had to come on here to look into rooting. I'm coming from the original HTC Evo, first build and all, and quite frankly, I got sick of flashing ROM's every week only to find another buggy rom. I'm a little reluctant to root this phone but I really want to be able to use apps that require root. I noticed in the two yrs I owned the Evo, there seemed to be newer easier methods of root so I come on here to ask what is the easiest method with the least amount of steps to root the GN? Or what is the most recommended method?

PS- so far, this seems to be a very impressive phone, it's lightning quick but that could be til I start filling it up. I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't have a SD card, especially since the usb port on my Evo crapped out on me in less than a year.
Oh one more thing, can someone recommend the best protectors out there, preferably the holster type. TY!
Well a big pro for the Nexus is that its stock ics and screen res, and that when Android Jellybean is out, this will be the first phone to receive it. The biggest con is probably the battery life, but that can be better by getting an extended battery or using JuiceDefender.
I currently have Gs2 but dislike TouchWiz, might get a GNex or wait for the Galaxy S 3 to come out, personally i'd wait for the GS3 to get announced at 3rd May and make a decision then.

Its not for everyone but anyone who loves android has to pilot the nexus on top or near the top of their wish list. Battery life is the only gripe for me since the regular extended battery is still not enough.

Is the battery really that bad? How long does it last with average use (texting, IM, facebook, internet, no gaming)?
Battery doesn't worry me, There are extended batteries for the Nexus for 10 dollars in Ebay. So yeahhhh.

I get 7 hours with average use every day... never issues with data drops or reception.. always solid 4g.
Awesome phone in every way possible.. i did try the RAZR before but didn't take to long the understand i can't be wearing motorola handcuffs for two years..
I'm considering buying the Nexus now that it is 400 dollars but I'm not sure if I should wait for the next best phone. Suggestions?
Edit: I'm concerned that I will get a phone that has banding issues/purple tint. I've read a ton of threads about this issue and it is concerning.

A lot of us here will tell you that the next best phone won't happen until the next nexus and none of us know when that'll be as there hasn't been any formal announcement.
I've got my galaxy nexus a little less than a month ago and I have no regrets.
You could pretty safely buy this for $399 and hold onto it for the next Nexus. The resale price won't be much lower. Or just hold onto the GNex why not.
Got my nexus 4 days ago, and I'm really glad i chose this phone. Haven't experienced any lag yet, and I have been running the most heavy 3D games available for android.. so you should definitely not be concerned about performance.
It's also easy to root, there's lots of development going on, it has a big super amoled hd display etc.. this phone will also be getting android jellybean when it's released.
Yes, there is several phones getting higher scores than the nexus in benchmarks, but performance-wise, there's actually not many areas where this phone could be improved. I don't really see the need of quad-core cpu's yet.
So, yea... I totally recommend you this phone!
edit: If camera is one of the most important things you're looking for in a smartphone, this phone's probably not for you... personally I take like 2-10 pictures a week .. so I really don't care about the cam..

It really depends on what you use the phone for. Do you watch movies more than you take pictures? Do you use the speaker to listen to music? That's just two of many factors you have to look at. Do you root and flash roms? Overall this phone is a good device should you over for some time. I for one get tired of phones and have to change every 5-6 months. I love the gnex but I think the camera and speaker volume could be better.

The speaker problem can be fixed with apps like Volume+, after installed it my speaker is quite loud. But the camera is really a concern.
I recommend this phone for almost everyone, the only exception is if you really need a good camera on the phone. This camera is average at best.
That said, I would buy this phone again today. The One X is really a temptation, but I know that being an Android geek that loves updated software I would regret to buy a not Nexus device. Did this 2 times and it was a pain in the ass, now I just buy phones from the Nexus line.
I am kind of in the same boat, lol. I just got the HTC One S, tho. I would like to switch to verizon for coverage reasons, but there seem to be issues with the 4G/3G connections. I played with one at the verizon store by my apartment, and it had a lot of issues. And I have read about the problems with data dropping, which it seemed to be doing at the store. I also love the loudness and clarity of the speaker on my one s. The one s camera has some fun things to it, tho. However I generally turn the pixel size down to under 5M anyway. Good luck with your decision. Maybe I will get the HSPA+ one and sell whichever one I don't like later.
I think I would miss having the MicroSD slot (even though I don't really use it). I don't have LTE in my area so that isn't really an issue for me. I'm slightly nervous about the display. I've read a lot about the banding issue that a lot of people have as well as the purple tint that others have. The prospect of fast updates sounds good (still waiting for ICS for my skyrocket...) but I'm not sure how much I really want the nexus.
The next best android phone comes out way too frequently. I personally wouldn't use this as a deciding factor. Do you like the gnex or not? Does it have features that will satisfy you? Does it have the community support that you want or need?

Just got my Sprint Nexus on Sunday and so far I'm psyched about it. I wanted a sexy looking device along with performance and the SG3/EVO LTE didn't have the look factor I wanted. I can sacrifice .2 ghz of a processor and don't find the camera all that bad on the Nexus. Plus Sprint was giving me 70 bucks for my Evo and 50 bucks through Google Wallet. So technically, after all is said and done, I'd pay $70 for the Nexus.

honastly you cannot go wrong with this phone, I love the freedom that it has provided to me with being a pentaband phone. You will always be waiting for the next best phone. Unless your looking forward to all the graphicly intense games in the pipline for tegra 3.
But if your a normal user IE social networking, email, music streaming, and casual gaming. This phone should not disappoint, look at it this way.
if your picking this up now, for cheap I can only imagine what next years nexus will be priced at around this time next year.

A nexus always has the latest OS and the Galaxy Nexus has few bugs... You really can't beat this device. The HTC One X is a bit better, but it will always be on par or behind on upgrades. So, if you upgrade every year, sure wait.... If you upgrade every 2, then go with Nexus, it'll take longer for it to feel like an old device due to quicker software updates.
I bought mine a week ago. No regrets. I spent a year on Windows Phone and couldn't have asked for a better way to cone back to Android.
I'd heard some complaints about they camera, but mine is very good. I do have the international version. No blurriness or off colors.
The phone is fast. Nothing else to say about it. No lagging or stuttering, fast app switching, beautiful screen. I noticed pixels on the Galaxy S Pentile display, but this one is beautiful.
Oh yea, I've left the phone stock. I'm sure I'll mod it in the future, but right now I haven't found a reason to. It runs exactly how I want it to.
I say buy the phone.

I have been using the HTC Sensation for a year now. I'm thinking of getting a new phone to use for at least a year. The Galaxy Nexus seems to have the best price to performance ratio right now. And I love the great support it gets from Google. If you're in my position, would you get the Galaxy Nexus?? Do you see yourself using the Galaxy Nexus for another year? Why?
Definitely, but then again I keep my phones until they die. My gnexus is my second smart phone, moto droid being first. Does what it needs to, it's quick, and lot of mods for it.

I never use to be someone that would waste so much money on phones every year but I find myself buying every Nexus that comes out every year.
I would probably keep the Galaxy Nexus for longer if my screen didn't have terrible stock whites (they are yellow) and terrible banding and gradient issues. All of these screen issues pretty much force me to use black colored themes which are nice, but is severely limiting.
For example, with JB and the lack of themes for it, it pains me to look at the stock screen/color settings on my phone. I don't think a phone should require 3rd party intervention to this degree.
Thus, when I buy the Nexus 4, I'm gonna make sure that it's a winner. I am absolutely enjoying my time with the Galaxy Nexus but I will not go through this annoyance again. Therefore, I'm moving onto the next Nexus ASAP.

Have you tried flashing another kernel like francokernel and tweaking the color multipliers and gamma settings? (I personally don't understand that stuff, but I've played with it a bit to get my whites whiter).

Ill probably stick with it. I feel guilty going from Nexus S to Galaxy Nexus already but it was so worth it ... except the part where the price just keeps going down (~700 to $399 to $349.99)

Oh I definitely tweak the colors using a custom kernel. Wouldn't be able to live without it.
My point is, however, that it reliance on a custom kernel and inverted Gapps shouldn't be necessary for my phone to look normal.
Right now I'm on JB and would love to stick to the stock kernel for performance and battery life but I'm forced onto Franco kernel for the color tweaks. That's the kind of limitations I'm talking about. This shouldn't be so.

I've never considered it.
The last thing I want is a refurbished Galaxy Nexus that may have tons of other problems. At least I know my problems here are restricted to the display.

Oh...hm are you sure Google would send a refurb rather than a new device? When did you buy it? Usually refurbs are used only if the device is an older model...though that's through carriers, who knows what Google will do.
I just found that Google actually has phone support for Nexus devices. If you head to www.google.com/nexus and follow the support link. They might be able to help you get a new device.
I'm keeping it. Love the phone, unless the next Nexus is a huge step up then I will not bother upgrading... we'll definitely be getting upgraded to whatever the next Nexus ships with so I'll be happy with this for a long time.

I have been on Samsung Captivate since it came out. Now however, the phone is stating to have hardware issues and I am thinking of upgrading. The money is tight, and so I think I will need to pass on the Nexus4 (plus, I am hesitant about the glass back; I drop my phones).
So I have been looking around for a phone with a good enough following on XDA to have decent support and development. The Galaxy Nexus, of course being a Nexus should have great support from both XDA and Google.So as the GNex is inching down to $200 on the used market and at that price it is a very attractive option.
I guess I am not too worried about buying a year-old hardware, but I am worried about buying into new problems. So the major question is - how has the Galaxy Nexus held up? Would you buy one used? Should I look out for anything specific?
Next, how are the stock roms? Will I still be running to CM or other developments for more stable, better rounded ROMs? Part of the attractiveness of the Nexus line is that I could potentially no need to do that - but am I expecting too much from Google?
If not Gnex, what else in the 15 months old / last-year's mid-level generation would you recommend? ( i have considered the One S)

If you are really interested in buying the Gnex then I would highly recommend it if you're in the market for a great phone at $200, I bought mine in March of last month and so far it has held up fine, I've overclocked it like mad, used it until it got hot as a stove and its still running like a champ. As for anything specific, well make sure everything works like the buttons, volume rocker, speaker etc.
Since it's a Nexus, it will definitely get the next version of Android (Key Lime Pie) and POSSIBLY the one after that (unless Google just gives it two updates like they did with the Nexus S Gingerbread -> ICS -> Jelly Bean)...but even then you can probably count on CM and other ROM makers to port whatever OS comes out after Key Lime Pie so you should be good...in any case it's a much better buy than say some non-Nexus phone from HTC or Samsung where they gotta do a lot of hackery to make the latest ROMs run on there.

Thanks ... Strangely one of the things I am hoping I can do with a Nexus is _not_ having to flash custom roms, but just run stock. I know it is the opposite of the purpose of nexus, but the Nexus is the best manufacturer-supported Android. And sometimes, I do not want to scan through 30 pages of XDA to figure out whether to update. It is one of the reasons I have recently stuck with CM-stable releases ... I know they will work.
I guess that is one of my questions: are the stock roms still lacking? Will I likely be back to flashing something like CM just to get stability and basic functions to work right? (I _am_ coming from AT&T + Samsung clusterf**k - so my expectations of stock roms are colored by that experience).

Thanks - Will look into SGSII - There seem to be so many version and the T-mobile version has a different CPU.. I eventually gave up trying to figure it all out. One of the bigger reasons I am thinking of retiring my Captivate is that it is a tri-band phone - it does not work well with half of T-Mobile's 3G spectrum, so I am on Edge a good deal of time - the pentaband GNex is certainly attractive.
I will give the SGSII a closer look, tho.

- eMMC chip problem (August 2013 and up production) ~ causing slow write speed when memory low

- Power button (as this parts is the most used button of all time)
- USB port (tend to be irresponsive over the time of usage)

I can confirm the eMMC chip having a slow write speed when memory is low (and it's annoying frankly), as for the power button, well I recommend installing PGM from the play store, which lets you wake up your phone by swiping the screen or double-tapping it...I got it primarily to save the power button some major wear and year.
I would only pay $100 for this phone because I kind of hate it. This VZW version has bad reception compared to the Motorola devices I've used on this network. For the use cases you've mentioned, I would NOT buy a nexus device. They are always behind in power and build quality. The only thing they have going for them is that they are reference devices.
The first Android phone I got was the Motorola Droid. I was spoiled by its reliability and lack of bloatware. My next device was the R2DR D2 and I was happy to get the Galaxy Nexus almost a year later. I will not buy another Nexus but I doubt that Google will make another VZW Nexus anyway. The only good things about this phone are its lack of bloatware and its ease of rooting and ROMing.
I really love my coworker's Galaxy S II but AT&T's OTA makes it freeze. She had to root it and put a new kernel on it.
I am all for being able to root, but HAVING to root really sucks.

CMIIW, but i think they found the cure for that anyway. So wouldn't be worrying about it i guess (i don't have the disease on my Gnex though).
Yap, PGM is the most important app for me.
Wouldn't flash a custom kernel without the compatibility with it.
Even if the power button is super rugged, i would install it anyway as swiping / double tapping the screen to wake up is comfier than reaching for the power button.

Stock ROM is perfectly good on a Nexus, and it will be your best bet for stability, as it is updated by Google directly. Your experience with "stock" AOSP-based ROMs for non-Nexus devices is not the same at all, since Google doesn't support those. There have been reports of random rebooting and Bluetooth issues on 4.2, but it's not that common. 4.1 is rock solid.

I see the VZW and Sprint variants go for $150 - the GSM variant is still about $250- $350.
I sold a nexus 4 and kept my galaxy.. The non removable battery and glass back was a no go for me.. Also got really hot. And in every day use I didn't see much improvement.. I don't game on my phone really. So I'd say the galaxy is great.. I'll rock it until the next nexus is available.

I'd still buy a galaxy nexus again. Mostly because I enjoy learning though. Definitely look for a lightly used one, as the power button and usb port use has been mentioned above. I would NOT even consider an sii, mostly because I've seen bad firmware OTA updates to them, as well as the chip vulnerability and lost imeis.

This phone is great but I think used ones are too expensive. Get the nexus 4 if you can.
No because I own one now and if I broke my Gnex I would want the newest Nexus or the best consumer phone.
Don't get me wrong, this is a fine phone, but in the age of $300 Nexus phones, I would always buy the latest no matter what.

Coming from the SII, I just bought the G Nex a month ago and I couldn't be more happy. The SII was great but I found I can do much more on this device and if you have LTE as I do then this is a great device to get fairly cheap. I paid 180 on eBay and it is mint with case and screen protector.

Yeah ^ for $300 I would get the Nexus 4... May even leave Verizon since it has that rogue LTE chip (the N4) and T-Mo with its unlimited data is rolling out LTE.
Between the micro USB port breaking, the lousy battery life, lack of accessories actually available, no inductive charging, and *only* a 5MP shooter, I'd hop on the Nexus 4 wagon any day.
Though if the Nexus 4 didn't exist, I'd buy this phone again if only for all the development, Ubuntu, WebOS, always the latest Android available...
