[Q] 10h battery life - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi everyone!
I want to use my phone as a sort of security camera for around 10h. I'm on latest Slim ROM, with AK Purity kernel, Conservative Governor, maximum cpu frequency set to 920 MHz (of course with lowest brightness and on airplane mode).
With the original battery full charged and an external usb 5600 mAh battery plugged (which can charge the phone 2 times and something more) I can reach around 6/7 hours of autonomy.
Do you have any ideas for adding at least 3 hours of battery life? :laugh::laugh:

if you are able to do it with the screen off may be you can squeeze a couple of hours , but dont actually know if the camera would work with the screen off?

Maybe with a an app installed that keeps proximity senzor on all the time. This way you can put a peace of adhesive plastic or something over the senzor after you turn on the camera. Voila! Camera working and screen is off. Only problem is: it's a very expensive device to use for a camera. Not worth it.

Can you explain this better? What is the connection between the proximity sensor and the camera?
I'm using a motion-triggered app to record, because the internal memory (~13 gb) of course cannot store 10h of recording in 1080p, and it needs the phone to stay awake in order to work. Do you know any other apps which work with screen off?

Used a Voltaic V60 (would give you a link but XDA says I can't since I'm a "new" user) for my thesis project in college. About the size of 10 standard extended batteries. Will probably be a little overkill, but definitely an option.

[Q] Battery Life and Charging Issues

About a month ago, I flashed the Energy ICS ROM onto my Kindle Fire. It's a great ROM that does everything you want it to without many bugs (after you upgrade the kernel). One gripe I have with this ROM is that the battery life is poor. I could probably get about 2 hours of non-stop use when connected to WiFi, but that's not the main point. About a week ago, I used my Kindle Fire nonstop and kept on letting the battery die. I would charge it to about 20%, unplug, use it all up, charge it 20% again, ect. After that day, I've noticed that charging speed is much slower, it took about 25 minutes to charge 10%. I have four questions to ask.
1) Are there any good ways to extend battery life?
2) Is the fact that I let my battery die too much bad for my battery?
3) What is the normal charging speed for a Kindle?
4) Is it OK to let my Kindle charge to 100% overnight?
Help, anyone?
its the nature of the beast with ICS battery life isnt good either slow to charge or fast to charge but doesnt last long I wouldnt drag it to its knees very often but thats just my opinion

1) Lower screen brightness, lower clock speed, use a different governor.
2) Probably not

I've lowered the clock speed to 1008 Mhz, already. However, I do not know what governor to try, Conservative (which would probably be to conserve power) has poor performance, so I kept it at Performance.
Some will argue that performance is better for better life than conservative anyway.
One thing you could do is disable wifi on sleep. Look for apps like Battery Saver and CPU Tuner to get the most out of your battery.

And turn off wifi when you aren't using it. It's easiest to have the power control widget on a homescreen so you can turn it on and off without going into settings.

Battery Life Discussion

Ok so here are the tools I use
An automatic radio activation tool that will turn radios/wifi /gps OFF when screen is off - Juice Defender Ultimate is my choice
A CPU management tool - I use AnTuTu CPU Master but i hear that SetCPU is also very nice
Better Battery Stats
I Have setup Juice Defender (JD) to turn off my radios/wifi/bluetooth when the screen is off, to manage auto-synch, manage screen brightness but i DO NOT use it to manage CPU. I have also not setup any special App settings in JD, it just manages power consuming hardware (other than cpu)
My CPU tool (whichever you use) is used to setup profiles based on situations. Screen off, screen on, in call, etc.
There is never any reason for your CPU to be over 700mhz unless you are interacting with your phone. When you are on the phone 920 is all you will ever need. You can set the max above 1200 if you want or need the extra power but just remember that the cpu is always going to be a battery drain.
The #1 thing to remember is that if your not using your phone actively, it should be doing as close to nothing as possible.
Now I would love to hear from others on experiences and strategies or even critiques of my method. I know many will say that JD is not needed, bit i like not having to think about it.
I stick with Trickster Mod app for CPU/kernel settings. It's amazing. Also I never use Juice defender I use Tasker :thumbup:

Good idea starting this thread but I feel that you've opened up a can of worms
I've used JD before on my Dinc2 and I liked the fact that it can manage the radios but for me, I get a lot of emails and I like something on so I stopped using it. I did try some other apps like that but JD was my favorite by far!
Check out TricksterMOD from the app store it blows setcpu out of the water! It let's you do so much more and since I've found that I can't go back to anything else.
I usually don't undervolt, I feel like the kernel developers so a good job with their frequencies so I leave that alone lol but I have been recently checking out the governor settings to try and optimize a few things, that's a tricky topic lol

What ROM you guys running for best battery life? I seem to get the most from aosp based roms and not cm10 or aokp ones.
Im using XenonHD with Tinys kernel. I saw HORRIBLE battery life until i took action to tame it. now its much better

Mines close to stock on purpose but I don't mind people tuning it. What did you change that helped battery? There's bit much from a kernel perspective that will really help battery.

i guess it belongs in general but the idea was to get all the tidbits that we need together in one app specifically for our phones. like "The CDMA Galaxy nexus Super Battery saver app that does it all without all the stuff you dont need"
Just flash lean kernel and turn off mobile data when you're not using it. No need for these crazy battery saving apps. I get ~7 - 9 hours a day, easily.

I consistently get 14 to 18 hrs. I've been using the battery for about 2 weeks now and its awesome.

Since radios are such a huge drain ...
I think my best move has been using an app called Profile. You can use it to turn off and on WIFI, Bluetooth and change the screen brightness at certain times on certain days. So at my usual time to go to work, WIFI gets shut off. At my usual time to get home, WIFI back on.
Also will change ringers, volumes and vibration on/off (always off uses battery).
24 hours no problem.
Costs a couple of bucks to get the time based control, but works for me.
Two tricks are using auto brightness and using WiFi whenever possible.
However, since I can't stand either of those options, using trickstermod to set max CPU speed while screen off, and setting color profile to morific typically helps my battery life.

CPU max is capped at 350 or 700 already there's no need to change it.

Yah why would you need to lower CPU on sleep when we have deep idle?
I use CM10 nightlies, and the latest dev snapshots of Imo's leankernel. Min frequency 230mhz, max 1350mhz, interactivex governor with his tweaks and sio i/o scheduler.
I get ~24 hours battery with decent screen-on time, from just texting, about 20 minutes on the phone, and websurfing on full wifi service wherever I go (stays connected even when sleeping, and we have cross-campus wifi here). 3g service only, no LTE here yet. Bluetooth off. NO apps--many of the market "powersaving" apps will just wake the phone from sleep and cycle a few times to write to the log file (any app that keeps track of power consumption, and half of them don't even use the system tools). GPS is on, but it's never initialized more than 1-2x a day for random needs.
Getting a lightweight kernel is a good choice for battery life saving, and getting one that actually keeps up with android mainline is pretty key.
I think it's most helpful to post your total 'screen on' time and time since charge. If someone tells me they get 14 hours, that means nothing. I can get a full day 16 hours with roughly 2 hours of screen on time, without limiting my phone via turning off mobile data, syncing, or using a juice defender app that disables a lot of things.
That, to me, is not very good at all. I saw that the Nexus 4 is getting about 4.5 hours of screen on time with a full day of being on with everything syncing, etc being on. 4.5 is actually pretty bad also compared to other devices these days.
No matter what I try I usually only get about 2.5 hours of screen on time. I under clock to a max of 750 screen off at 280 undervolted to in each setting.
I've tried many many kernels with many roms
Screen on time doesnt mean much me to me because i use my phone for personal and business use, which means I get quite a few calls.
I use the stock 4.1.1 image, rooted with SuperSu and debloated a bit. Also use Faux kernel 23m-sr and his control app.
I roughly get about 2.5 hours screen on time with light calls and about 1.5 with heavy calls - my off charger time is pretty good though as it easily gets me thru the day. I bought another OEM standard battery and just keep one fully charged at all times so I can swap. Works well for me.
I also keep 4g on - why not when you can swap batteries.

No only when you use something requiring device GPS does it turn on. Most background stuff like Google Now uses tower fix so it's OK to leave it on.

Battery life is a pretty unique experience for everyone. Apps, ROM, kernel, signal, Wi-Fi time, brightness, etc. Won't say these type of threads are totally pointless but they are pretty close to it. Always good to share pointers on how to save a few minutes of juice though. Ultimately its a big screen and turning it off now and then is the best way to save but personally I leave all my services on because that's why I bought this thing and I keep a charger everywhere I go.

for me, The latter versions of CM10 have significantly shorter battery life than other roms such as cm7 and older versions of CM10.
this is across all of 3 my batterys, all of them varying in age, form as old as the phone to anout 8 months old.

I have problem with BF5X High-Capacity Gold Battery 2430 mAh (for Moto MB525) under 3 and 4MS2G ROM.
It is charging Up to 81% only and I have tried out Walter`s patch But nothing.
Under Stock FROYO it charges Up to 90%.
Please, ignore/delete if the tread is only for CM10!
I think that I found the culprit.. (maybe)
- install SetVsel
- check if the values are higher than than those on bootmenu
Can some one check this?
I had VSel1 to something like [email protected] or VSel4 on [email protected] ...
But bootmenu has much lower values..
so far, so good..

Hi, I am using the exact same battery as yours.
Using Quarx's new kernel in the 2nd boot version of CM10, that battery can charge normally to 100%...

Just to make it crystal clear, the default boot menu values are actually OVER volted.
Calculate values for your frequencies either by using this app-----> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1815142
Or by using the formula (frequency)/20 ±2.
Use boot menu to set frequencies and voltages.
Keep 'Load all modules' OFF, and governor as Interactive.

That's the problem... in bootmenu the values are lower than those, when andoid is running!
(and yes.. I used that app )
eg:
bootmenu: vel1: 300 @ 30
runtime: vel1: 300 @ 42
and thats is odd..

I've been using SetVsel to adjust voltage. Should I be adjusting the bootmenu's instead? Why?

I have BF5X ... So what does this mean in comparison to HF5(X)?

Usually charge via wall-mount since PC-USB takes longer.
Usually have to charge overnight.
With semi-regular use, It's lasted 21hrs.
Usually lasts less than that with video/music/screen on constantly.
(With 3G-on, Brightness 25-50%, subsonic running playing music, getting a few texts, and messing with some settings/desktop I lost just under 10% batt in one hour. or 1-2% usage per 10 minutes.)
I only use SetVsel:
300/17
600/32
800/42
1000/52
up_threshold: 86%
Apply @ boot: Ticked.
Limiting Vsel2 @ 10%
up_threshold to 99% @ 10%

Why?? Coz you can....
using boot menu instead of setvsel just reduces the no of apps you need to use.
Why do a patch when you can program the system itself?
Plus, auto patches at boot increase the time it takes for the phone to become usable after boot.
AFAIK, BF5X and HF5X are the same... I don't know this for sure, but someone said this some time back on the dev thread...
18.11 was a good build... I got 4.5 hrs on continuous 3G use... and about 18-20 hrs on occasional use....

Ya, battery life is lesser and battery temperatures are higher on CM10 05.12 in my experience.
Its a bug of the latest build...
Let's wait to see what the next one does....

Any other adjustments beyond Vsels I should adjust in the Bootmenu? i.e. the 10 batt options SetVset had.
What blows my mind is the phone I had before Defy was just a QWERTY keyboard sliding cellphone... freaking 2+ days of usage! Now I can barely make it to 24hrs! AGh!

You can do a lot in boot menu....
set thresholds, set CPU speed in sleep, on wakeup, etc....
its been months since i used setvsel, so I'll have to look up the options you're talking about..
Well, me and my battery are about to go our separate ways, I notice heavy drops lately, for example from 70% directly to 50%. I believe the battery is dying, so I ordered a 2400mAh battery from an amazon.co.uk reseller. My current battery is an BF5X original, nearing the 2 years mark now. I charged once every 2 days when in CM7, but often every day after heavy usage. With CM10 I have to charge every day, it drains more.

I'm a real heavy user.... most of the time my phone is plugged in, coz with the loads I put on the 3G antenna and on the processor, I only get 4-4.5 hours of use....

I second that. Using the same tools like GSAM Pro + ROM Toolbox and Android Toolbox from 3C, i managed to isolate the same process. Underneath it all this "suspend" belongs to the kernel and from a more detailed report it is allways accompanied by "loop#" processes. In my case, kernel and its processes is the no1 consumer, all the time.
The second consumer is Android System, mostly due to atmospheric sensors (i had no ideea the Defy+ has anything like this..probabily because it doesn't  but the processes are there anyway)
Even like that i get at least 30hrs between charges, permanently having wifi or 2G on.. .
My HF5X battery is 1yo(came with the phone) and is being charged with no concern whatsoever about preserving it's life ...so yeah, random times and random sources (pc or wall plug, even used my e-cigar ac adapter).
What i did so far was:
- I had problems with "media server" as a power hog. After searching the forum for a solution a thread gave me the right one.
I ran mp3 check and found several mp3 files that were broken. Fixed whatever i could and replaced what was irreparable (AC/DC-Thunderstruck, of course, was one of'em)
- Found and removed unnecessary start-up entries. Wherever this was not an option i disabled their receivers (i REALLY don,t need to have YouTube ready at boot time, having it started on youtube links is nice enough).
- Used many launchers to the day. The last one and by far the least RAM/CPU and power hungry is the current one - Lightning Launcher by PIERROX (see signature). Look at the download size in the Play Store (handsome title btw) Did i mention it's FREE?
- Keyboard was replaced with Perfect Keyboard Pro - low RAM footprint.
- I permanently use a live wallpaper that gives me an overview of the CPU, RAM, BATTERY and DIRECTION (compass is allways on but is literraly close to 0 in terms of power consumption)
-ALL the useless stuff was uninstalled or replaced.
- Using Android Toolbox i setup database and app load optimisations to run on boot.
- ZRAM is disabled, KSM on, SWAP (64mb) is on.
What i want to do:
- collect a full system dump, if possible. Get it analysed (in UNIX there's kdb for that purpose, i have no ideea what is the equivalent here)
Hope this helps/points/suggests an approach to someone. Furthermore, may i suggest a SEAL TS3 for those mild Siberian winter nights? IP68 & MIL-SPC860 should help

[Q] excessive battery consumption

Hello guys,
a few days ago I bought the notes 8.0 wifi and after a few hours they already had administrator permissions.
I left the tablet that becomes exhausted and completely after a night in office, in the morning I started to make some changes: new rom and kernel immediately immediately!
I state that in Italy are the CEO of an interesting blog where we treat only Google Experience products novel that I'm not really, but ...
Turning now from the Nexus 7 (I still have it) the difference for the better I feel about this tablet but I have noticed, however, an excessive drain on the battery, then not doing anything so important: the hours of active screen only 3/4 albeit with wifi always on!
I tried to set all the Governor also present with heavy undervolt but I have not noticed noteworthy improvements ...

I didn't understand all of your post, but wanted to share my experience:
Leaving the screen brightness on auto is essential to get reasonable battery life. On full brightness my tablet battery runs out way too fast. I do think this device has the shortest battery life of 7 other tablet/phone devices I have previously used for multiple full days (I cannot judge with less usage). But as long as you leave it on auto brightness most of the time, it has managed to get me through each business day since it was released.

you are absolutely right but also the tablet in standby consumes a small percentage of the battery, that's not good, at least to me.
I'll talk with the developers for the right settings in the kernel ... hopefully
I found that I only use a few percent when its in stand by. Heres what I have my settings as and why
Brightness - either auto +5 or 50% switching between the 2 as required.
Sync off.
Power saving mode - on unless I want to play resource heavy games.
GPS off. only turn it on if an app specifically requires it (navfree)
Bluetooth off.
spen battery saving mode on. the spen layer uses charge so no point having it on unless i need it. if im using my 8pi pen i just leave the spen out a little, using it like a switch.
Other battery saving things.
Auto airplane mode - app that turns all the signals off when the screen is off.
trickster mod - under volted by 75 on the CPU accross the board (had a few crashes on 100). also undervolted the GPU and changed the ramping threasholds.
- govner set to lulzactiveq which is a modified interactive but also with the benefit of limiting the cpu when the screen is off.
- set ignore_nice_load to 1. so that nice to have processes are now no longer run. only the higher priority ones are.
greenify - set various apps to hibernate stopping them from taking the tablet out of sleep.
Think thats everything.

The second part is more interesting, in fact undervolt to -75 they had not yet tested on this note 8 but if you tell me that the tension holds well-being.
Also on the GPU did you apply the undervolt?? mmmm
The Governor me most is satisfying, at least in terms of battery life - albeit with some lag micro - is "ondemand" (100 -> 1200) with frequency freeze (of 4 cores), thanks to kernel @civato :good:
Standby does not consume almost nothing but if you use the goodness of the screen, wifi and all notifications accesse lead to excessive battery consumption that even my Nexus 4 behaves this way (having then 2100m)

I've not really updated any of my threads since coming back from holiday. I will do at some point but im pretty happy with my set up at the moment and have only been lurking on here rather than actively contributing these last few weeks.
the situation seems to have improved a bit, with cuts of volts everywhere: P
let's see if over time more kernels will do miracles ...

[Q] Custom kernel for better battery life ?

I am not getting that good battery as everyone. I am only getting about 4-5h on screen time not like the others 7-10 hours.
What can I do to get this awesome battery life ?
Are there any tweaks,mods that I have to apply ? Is there a custom kernel that is preferable ?

Are you using a custom rom? If yes, which is it?
Have you tried disabling location settings in settings?
Have you untick location settings and remote wipe device in google play services?
Doi you have a high wakelock that's cauing the issue?

I usually get 7-10+ hours, but I also keep mine on a wireless charger if I'm sitting at my desk or if I'm away and don't need it. Here's my setup that may help your battery life:
Location Settings: Battery Saving, this especially helps on stock ROM
Kernel: ElementalX 2.6: Overclocked to 1.8 GHz and undervolted on lower frequencies with elementalx governor. Cool thermal throttling, max screen off frequency is 1.026 GHz. GPU overclock to 450 MHz, ondemand.
If your screen brightness is up over 50% it's wasting a lot of power. I keep mine around 20-25% or on Auto.
When the screen is turned off it doesn't drain too much either. Overnight, 6-7 hrs, drains maybe only 5%. I'm going on 14 hrs battery with only a little bit of charging from the wireless qi charger.

I am on the stock rom ,
for the location services it's set to battery mode.
I don't have that high lock but after a 18-24 hour I got one or two hour of CPU total at Android System - Android OS

I have already put the Location Settings on Battery saving mode & I have changed the kernel as you mentioned but without overclocking the CPU the screen is always on Auto.
