Its quite common in the One X and this thread has a couple of tests and solutions

sorry but im not hardware eng , i want software fix
thanks

The measuring technique of AOSP based roms is different (more accurate?) to the one of sense roms. Flash a Sense ROM to get better signal.

Weak wifi signal

I have an extremely weak wifi signal, I am only next door (About 1 meter away thru wall) - my laptop, nokia N95, PS3, nokia N97 and iPod have full bars but my phone has only 1.
My HTC Desire has a very low signal and often drops, when it drops I have to disable wifi and re-enable wifi else when its re-scanning it will never find the network.
This problem only occurs when using custom ROM (Currently using MIUI), I've concluded this by installing MIUI, Oxygen, GingerVillian and stock htc. Only in the stock HTC do I get full bars.
I have tested on all with recommended radios and stock radio. HTC ROM has full bars and never drops on all radios but the other ROMs have extremely weak signals even when using the recommended one.
Please help!
Noting the lack of replies on this issue, I'm only guessing that there is no real solution.
I also have found out that I must be on the wifi setting page for my phone to auto re-connect.
hi SMCentral,
found your thread while searching for weak signal cause.
feeding back to your test with different roms, i am on a stock rom (sw 2.29.405.5).
my wifi signal strength was very good last year as far as i remember, but recently suffering from very weak reception. i suspect a bad radio update over OTA. so different stock rom might differ. now i also have to go to wifi page to reconnect probably the signal seems too weak.

PS: Baseband version is 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
hope this helps someone to find the cause.
There is an update for the radio here (5.14.05.17). I downloaded the second file since it said it was safer to use. For me it's stable and nothing really happened but people are saying it has improved reception/signal.

I don't have problem with my signals whilst using stock rom but if I use a custom rom with any radio baseband and RIL, I get a very weak wifi signal. Try flashing the latest radio from http://www.mightyrom.com/mrx/MRX/Bravo/Radio/Signed/32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27.zip

I'll be trying this. Will feedback with results. Thanks buddy.
No issue for me regarding signal strength....
On a side note: I wish HTC had incorporated the wirless 802.11n standard to their WiFi module in the Desire...that has a far superior range and better bandwidth.
Yeah, if it had n support, it would of been amazing. Totally amazing.

Yup and would have stopped them selling more desire HD's with n capability. Sure it would have been nice if they had included it but that's life in the mobile phone marketing biz
No wait, after some research. HTC has hidden n capability. :O
I've flashed the .zip and well.. it works signal has become stronger too.
Just flashed the new radio , getting mmuc better wifi signal strength
Thankyou xD
You serious? They actually hid it??....that's so fiendish!!

[Q] Question Regarding Signal on AOSP vs Sense

Maybe this is all in my head so I need a confirmation. Do Sense ROMs have better signal strength/data speeds? It doesn't make sense to me but I just seem to have much better reception and speeds when using a Sense based ROM, including EVO framework ones as opposed to CM and Ruby. Is there ay reason for this or am I just imagining it?
I've often wondered the same thing.
I think, however, that actual reception is tied to the PRL, the radio, the PRI, and some more uber-technical stuff - in other words, things well under the hood that aren't impacted/changed when a ROM is flashed.
That said, I suspect ROMs play differently with those things depending on how they are built, hence what appears (or may actually be) better signal.
It all comes down to the RIL and radio. A rom won't mess with those. They should be identical. Check the signal dBm's to compare roms.

I figured it would be a radio thing but it always seemed it was changing from ROM to ROM. That being said, I switched from a Sense ROM to an AOSP one and the signal has not changed at all so thanks guys for answering the question. I knew it had to be in my head hehe

One thing you DO have control over is the firmware of the radio. There are currently 3 versions of radio firmware that you can flash. This has nothing to do with the ROM. Different people have different results in terms of link stability and speed depending on them. Look for the Radio thread to find the downloads and information.
I've actually had this issue on the EVO and can confirm after testing that the signal strength is less with an AOSP ROM (every one I've tried actually). Drives me crazy because I really want to use one.

How exactly did you test this? There are many variables that could influence signal.

[Q] Latest, safest radio for Telus DHD?

What is the best radio for the Telus DHD? Im having battery drainage issues
bump.
would like better battery life
I would also like to know the Safe radio options for Telus DHD
I have seen a few dotted around and some that are reccommended to gain the best peformance with specific roms (revolution for example) But i know changing the radio can sometimes be risky.
Thanks in advance.
oh and equlizer have you tried wiping battery memory, that worked a charm for me...
yep, battery issues fixed

Glad to hear it!
Ive been trying to find posts with people advising against radio, or recommending the best fit (or general) radio compatibility with the Canadian Version of the Phone but i'm having no luck,,,
So far are the DHD radio's have the ability to be rolled back without issue?
Are there any specific radios that seem to brick the canadian version of the DHD?
does anyone have a definate answer?!
I think it depends on which rom you are using

Hi,
My radio is 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M and I installed a Stock-rooted Gingerbread ROM.
It came with a radio but I didn't flash it (Mabe I was scared or just wanted to test the ROM first who know...) the fact is since then, my battery life as improved and the radio signal is good enough that I didn't flash it.
(24-32 hours of autonomy with a good use of my device)
Should I think again and flash the new radio anyway ?

Radio (12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M)
I live near Ottawa, but in a lower reception area, and I have been trying radios trying to get a good mix of reception and battery life.
Currently I'm using "Radio_12.35d.60.140f_26.06.03.24_M2 - TELUS WWE 1.84.661.1" and the corresponding RIL on Leedroid GB rom. It seems ok for now, but if anyone has tried a bunch of radios and can suggest their own best results for us Canadian desire owners, I would be much appreciated!
a fellow telus dhd owner here in edmonton. i'm using the latest radio (check sig) with g ril on cm7 with great results. i was using hm ril's for a bit and the device had very poor performance (calls cutting in and out, slow gps sat lock, wifi/3g sporadic disconnect/reconnect, etc). all that has been remedied by just flashing a g ril instead of a hm ril.
i think it'd be good to remind everyone that matching your radio and ril to your rom type (i.e. sense vs asop) is also important. from what i've read, use g for asop and hm for sense roms. it sure made a difference for me.
Thank you for the good advice. I switched up to the newest radio and ril and they seem the best for me I am still interested to know what others agree having success with here in Canada

I'm a fairly new user, got my Telus DHD (first Android) in the beginning of april, I live in Montreal, and took the entire phone apart within the first week. Tried a whole bunch of roms, then learned the hard way that Sense roms are like beautiful girls in bars at 2 am, they get you excited at first but then it's all disappointment... Lately I've been playing a lot with cyanogen nightlies, and I've been trying to find the best battery life possible.
So far the best I got was CM7.1 RC1 with Radio_12.35d.60.140f_26.06.03.24_M2 - TELUS WWE 1.84.661.1
That would last me over 35 hours very consistently with heavy use, screen on and lots of data (3G)
I tried pretty much all other radios on the latest nightlies (right now #170) and haven't found anything as good as 26.06.03.24_M2. I am in the process of reflashing that one while on this nightly to see if things will go back to what I had.
When you know your rom (and apps running) are not draining the battery, is the radio/ril the only other variables that affect battery life ? In other words, would the same radio/RIl drain the same regardless of the rom you're using ?
(forgot to mention I flash Alienmind's stuff over that, so I also use LordModUE v6.9.2 kernel and I change the OC to 122min/1.3max and use Brazilianwax (that governor seems so far seems to be the best)

[Q] Core Droid - Weak Signal Reception

Hi,
First: THANKS to whoever developed CoreDroid!!!
It's an AMAZING ROM - the best I tried by a looooooooooooooong way: sleek, fast(er), almost as tweakable as Cyanogen7 but much more usable and very friendly UI.
I find only one area of probles: signal strength.
Where I have clear reception with my Nokia N8, I have no signal with my DHD running CoreDroid. In all honesty, other 2 ROMs had the same problem so I am curious to ask other forum members if this is known HWare problem or if it is a ROM problem.
Japan, Softbank, rooted DHD, CoreDroid, Android 2.3.3
Any idea how to improve signal reception?
Thanks for any help!
Have you tried flashing another radio?
Flashing guide
Radio thread
I don't know if there's any different recommendations in Japan, someone else will have to help you with that.
Edit: Maybe the radio radio that came with the gingerbread leak could help.
@ Hawk,
Thanks, but I am using that very radio...! (BTW, who developed CoreDroid? It's a really cool ROM).
Japan has a bit of a tricky situation with the carrier's frequencies etc... and before blaming the ROM I was wondering if anyone has had any experince with flashed ROMs signal weakness in this country or... I is anyone aware of reported issues with this specific new CoreDroid 4.8 on Sense 2.1 (signal levels)?
Sam? Others?
TIA for any help... would be much appreciated...
Hi,
I have installed Radio 12.35d.60.140fU_26.08.03.07_M and work very fine with the last version of coredroid

Whatever you do, stay away from CoreDroid V5. Personalize button does not work! I read it somewhere in the forum, but wanted to try it by myself, and found the fact.
Regarding the Radio, I never faced any big signal problem with the LeeDroid recommended Radio, but battery life issue was something I was waiting to be developed by some guru someday. Now, running CoreDroid V4.8 (over a week), and Radio 12.35d.60.140fU_26.08.03.07_M (since last night) I'll be watching for a few days before feeling any difference between the two Radios. I already got a feeling with better battery life with the new Radio.
Sam,
Instead of "feeling" how about "measuring" the signal strength and batt life?

Radio ROM & Revolution HD 3.5

What are your experiences in this??
I'm running Rev 3.5 with Radio_12.35d.60.140f_26.06.03.24_M2 as suggested .. Didn't really have any problems..
But I'm wondering if the newer radio's like :
17th March 2011:Radio_12.35d.60.140fU_26.08.03.07_M_Test
04th April 2011: Radio_12.48.60.23U_26.08.04.07_M3
Give any significant improvements without loosing stability.
Or.. Is it wise to think that when HTC releases gingerbread for DHD it will come with a new kick-ass radio ROM ?...
Hi , am using AR HD 3.5 with Radio_12.48.60.23U_26.08.04.07_M3, better reception and GPS is faster.
Alright ..
Gonna flash it when my battery is full again..
IN all the radio threads you see big warnings about bricking ur phone etc .. But what actually happens if you do flash a BUM radio rom ...?
You'd still be able to get in the recovery menu and reflash it right ?
phone becomes paper weight...
ouch....
So... with that in mind.. is it a wise choice to flash
Radio_12.48.60.23U_26.08.04.07_M3 ??
Also how come a BUM radio rom cannot be reflashed ?
I flashed the 'unknown source' radio a while ago and used it for a week. I switched back to the recommended one because I found my Wifi & Mobile Data went off after I locked the phone. Apart from that the radio was pretty good.
Hmm ... read around a little and I don't see other complaints about this ..
I will flash it and give feedback here
It depends..
For example,Radio_12.35d.60.140fU_26.08.03.07_M's 3G network works very fine..But it has bad wifi performance..
Radio_12.48.60.23U_26.08.04.07_M3's 3G network doesn't works as stably as Radio_12.35d.60.140fU_26.08.03.07_M's,but it has better wifi performance and better battery life..
May be it also depends on your phone and location.
I'm sticking on the radio recommended and so far the phone perform well as well as the battery still satisfied me as I oc it to 1.6 GHZ with smartass scaling.
