[Q] Flash HELP please! - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi, I am currently on Cm10 rom and I want to update to cm10.1. I have Clockwork installed and Goo Manager. I am trying to update my rom through Goo Manager but it keeps bringing me the to Clockwork boot screen, what do I do next? I have no idea what to select to update my rom using Goo, I've tried searching and all the videos I've seen of people using Goo Manager, they never get into the problem since they don't have clockworkmod installed. I tried to uninstall Clockworkmod but it does not give me the option to. Someone please Help!

Its either Rom Manager + CWM or Goo Manager + TWRP, you cant mix and match unless you wanna have issues
For the S3 I would highly recommend TWRP, however you wont be able to restore your backups made with CWM through TWRP
To install TWRP, go into Goo Manager and select "install openrecovery script" and it'll install it. Then try to flash the update again.

I don't need to try and uninstall CWM? If I download openrecovery script, would it still bring me to the CWM mode? or will it just update my rom through Goo manager? NOTE: In the youtube videos I've watched, they did not wipe cache, etc. when updating a cyanogen rom, I did not do so either, would that be a problem also?

Goo Manager will install TWRP over CWM, so you dont need to do anything but wait for it to do its thing. When you go into recovery, it will look different because it will no longer be clockworkmod recovery, it will be TWRP (team win recovery project)
No, when you flash without clearing (also called a dirty flash) thats usually reserved for updates only, because either things were added that dont need clearing, or some files were changed to fix bugs. Although updates are usually done this way, the nature of some updates may still require you to do a full wipe and then flash, but for CM a dirty flash is usually fine. The dev will usually clearly state whether a dirty / clean flash is required for a particular update
Also, remember to make a backup before flashing though! You never know what may go wrong, or if the rom itself may be a bad download, so its better to play it safe and make a nandroid

[Q] question about unlocking/flashing

I have looked on the forums but i haven't found a clear answer to this. If someone wants to give me a link to whatever post explains it, please do, since i'm sure i'm asking something that's already been answered somewhere.
I used the unrevoked method to root the phone:
http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
Do i need to do something beyond that in order to load on a custom rom?
I used the clockworkmod to make a backup of the phone. If i load up a custom rom and decide i don't like it, will the clockworkmod remain on the phone or will the custom rom possibly replace it? If so, how do i restore the backup?
And lastly - how do i actually go about installing another rom? I wanted to try the Fresh rom. I looked at the thread on here for it but i didn't see any directions as to how to go about actually installing it.
Anyone? I'm sure this has been answered before - if someone can just give me the link to the thread i'll go read it. I just haven't had any luck finding the answer on my own.
once you have done unrevoked you should be good to flash roms youc an verify this by looking in the bootloader to see if it shows S off at the top.
To flash a rom first download what ever rom you want and place it on your sd card. boot to recovery and wipe dalvik, data and cache. then select install zip from sd. navigate to the rom and select it and you should flash the new rom. go back and select reboot phone. it will boot up and will take longer then it normally does while it does its magic and you should then boot to the new rom.
Clockwork will not be changed by the rom so no worries there and you can easily restore it by going to the same option you did to make the back up you should see restore. select the back upa nd poof your on your way.
Thanks a lot for the info omega. It does indeed show S-OFF at the top of the boot loader screen.
So just to be clear:
i go into the boot menu, go into recovery, select
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
advanced - wipe dalvik
and then do install zip from sdcard (after i've uploaded the rom zip file)
oh and one last question - if i want to restore it to what i have now, do i just use clockwork to restore the backup i made? or do i have to flash the original rom on there first?
Thanks again for the info
I use rom manager on market, no issues other than the fresh rom link gives an error, its updated often for other roms

i saw a few people mention that but i also saw a few people mention having problems with it, so i thought it best/safer if i did it myself. Or at least i should know how to do it myself in case using something like rom manager doesn't work.
for the manual way you are spot on with the instructions, to restore you won't need to wipe, just nandroid> restore

Resetting

So I am trying to remove MIUI and install a diff ROM but I am having serious problems because when I try to install the other ROM from ROM manager, it brings me to the manual recovery every time. I also tried to do a factory reset and it still brings me to the recovery. I have an old backup of my ROM but even trying to restore to that it reboots me into recovery. I am not sure what to do at this point
Just restore it manually through recovery. I've only used ROM Manager maybe twice, to update CWM. Otherwise, I do everything manually so I know it's being done right
Don't try to flash a ROM via ROM Manager, download the ROM's zip file and flash via recovery.
EDIT: What BrettApple said.

Rom Manager doesn't see CWM is installed?

Rom Manager doesn't seem to know that I've got CWM installed. When I rooted and installed CWM I didn't do it through Rom Manager originally. Now CWM won't let me use it to manage my backups and keeps asking me if I want to install CWM? I've got Google Wallet installed so I'm a little nervous flashing things needlessly.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
edit: CWM v5.5.0.4
do you try "wipe cache" and "advanced->wipe dalvik cache?"
Thanks, I just tried, it took quite a while to clear the cache. When I booted up it went through a whole Optimizing Apps process, I'm not sure if that was due to wiping the dalvik cache? But it still didn't fix the Rom Manager issue.
Its probably not yet compatible if you have the touch version of cwm installed, so it wants to flash the standard one. Or you could always just let rom manager just reflash cwm overtop and then you may be good to go.

Maybe it can't detect it? I know we had to set which CWM version we had installed on the SGS.
Maybe try to run the install?

I don't have the touch version installed (doesn't seem to be the touch version anyway). I should have said this in the first post but it CWM v5.5.0.4.

Flashing CWM over CWM shouldn't wipe my phone right? It's only the stock bootloader that requires a full wipe?
I installed ROM manager and then CWM via ROM manager last night and its CWM v5.5.0.2 which ROM manager thinks is the latest: perhaps it can't deal with 5.5.0.4 yet...

ah, that would probably do it...guess i'll just wait it out a little longer, thanks
I have the exact same issue as this Rom Manager refuses to see I have CWM installed so just keeps telling me I need to install it it also can't download and flash its own version and just freezes after download
So any updates on this or more users experiencing it ?
I think I've found the solution. In ROM Manager tap the menu button at the top and then tap Manual Flash Override. Next it'll ask you if you've flashed CWM manually so tap OK because that's what we've done. Next pick which GN you have and then choose CWM 3.x+. There you have it, it should work now.
Don't use ROM Manager - problem solved!!
Seriously, though, it's a TERRIBLE piece of software
I'm fairly new to using it but it seems decent, why is it so terrible? I had an eris before this and did everything manually through recovery, this seems like it's a lot better than that.
It's just more trouble than it's worth. Why not just manually flash CWM using fastboot and get your head around that as opposed to an app which can - frankly - break things?
Flashing it via fastboot is what causes the above issue. Since you flash it manually rom manager can't see it, that's why I posted the above steps to kind of "force" rom manager to see the manually installed version.
But if you're not using ROM Manager then what's the issue? Copy ROM to SD card, reboot to recovery, flash ROM...where is ROM Manager needed in that equation?
If you're not using it then there is no issue, but this thread isn't about using it or not, it's about getting it to work with the galaxy nexus when you manually flash CWM.
I like it for the backup and restore feature and being able to change the names used to backup

[Q] Custom Rom Help

Hi all,
First of all what a great community with so much helpful information. I am new to android, just moved from 4 years of iphone. I have rooted my galaxy s 3 using the helpful guides on this site. I was wondering if someone could point me to a helpful guide on custom roms. From my understanding, all I have to do is go to the play store and download rom manager and then install clockwork mod and from there I can start using custom roms. Thanks a ton.

You dont have CWM yet? If you want you can just download Goomanager from playstore and install TWRP from there. That will give you recovery.
Then you can start playing with your ROMS.
If you want to use Goomanager just install it
open it
once it opens hit the menu button and select Install OpenRecoverScript.
Take a look here. Lots of info and even talks about TWRP and recovery

Is there a reason to choose between rom manager and clockwwork mod or goo manager TWRP?

I have never used ROM manager. CWM and TWRP do the same thing. They are both recoveries that you can use to back up your ROMs and flash ROMs. I haven't used CWM in awhile as I prefer TWRP. Again they do the same thing but TWRP is a touch recovery. Little easier to use. Once you install either one you just download what ever ROM you want. I store the ROMs on my external SD card. Then you just boot into your recovery and flash the ROM you just downloaded.

I have a quick question about goo manager, I am try to point to my sdcard as the download location and it says that all the paths that I try are not valid. I have tried /storage/extsdcard/apps/goomanager but that wont work. Im not sure what the issue is.

RomManager and GooManager, and ClockWorkMod and TWRP are different kind of softwares.
CWM and TWRP are recoveries, as Jasvncnt1 said above. They are used to flash ROMs into the phone or flashable packages into a custom ROM, backup a ROM, restore a ROM, and some kind of other maintenance (fix permissions, factory reset, format SD card...). They basically are the engine used to customize your phone.
RomManager and GooManager are apps. They basically are front-ends to recoveries usable right from your ROM. (For example, if you flash a ROM from GooManager or RomManager, the app simply reboots the phone into your actual recovery and asks the recovery to proceed with flashing the specified package. Same goes for fix permissions, resets, etc. if they are available in the app.)
These apps also extend recoveries capabilities by offering some other useful functions like dowloading ROM zips from repositories, downloading Gapps packages, checking for available ROM updates...
Some people may find apps like GooManager and RomManager useful, but basically everything available in these apps can be achieved manually right from the recovery.

I believe the download path is case sensitive. extsdcard is a different location than extSdCard. Moreover, the download folder must already exist before you configure it as the prefered download folder in GooManager. So check the following:
1) that you have a /storage/extSdCard/apps/goomanager folder in your external SD card. If not, create it;
2) that you type exactly /storage/extSdCard/apps/goomanager, with the uppercase letters at the right place.

[Q] how do I update CWMRv6.0.1.2 to Mobile ODIN v3.65 GS3 SPH-L710

DISCLAIMER:::: This Is my second thread.I AM A LOWLY NOOB..PLEASE GREAT ONES HELP::
Rather than bury this question in another long thread I made another if I am wrong in this please delete or move to proper thread(mods).
Anyway.
As stated before my phone keeps having hard resets. I believe its due to improper installation due to recovery. I am currently on CWMR v6.0.1.2
I want to know if there is a way to update this to a more up to date version so that I may install and run the wicked sensations v.4 or any other modern ROM. I was running a older version of PHANTOM Blaze (last years or so model) I really am new to the rooting game and I am trying to understand the lingo as I want to help others unlock the power and potential of their "smartphones".I guess what i need to know is how do I update from the version of CWMR i am running to one with ODIN (a newer model). I think if I do this I can destroy the random hard resets.
Any advice? (thanks will be given.)
I do not believe your resets are caused by the recovery at all. Also CWM has nothing to do with Odin, two separate programs. CWM works with the phone itself. Odin is a program which you run on your computer and connect your phone to the computer and you put the phone in download mode. There is a Mobil Odin also available.
To answer your question the easiest way to update CWM is to download Rom Manager app from Google Play Store. Within that app it gives you the ability to check for updates for CWM and flash it right through the app.

Notice the very first on top thing once you open Rom Manager.

You can use the Rom Manager App to install the latest CWM recovery (see this thread)
Can you boot into recovery mode? If you can, Naddict has created recoveries that are able to be flashed from the recovery itself. That might be one was to upgrade to the latest. Also, CNexus has created an aroma installer that can switch recoveries on the fly. It's a really neat program, but also requires access to recovery mode.

I seriously doubt that Recovery is causing reboots.
Did you restore any data or apps from Titanium Backup?
Any apps you recently installed that might be causing it?

Most likely your reboots are caused by rogue app and or bad data. The only way to isolate this is by reflashing the rom on a full clean install. Then loading apps all fresh not from a backup.

What Ed said.
I'm 90% sure you've been restoring data (or not wiping enough when flashing the new ROM).
My standard procedure when flashing a ROM (even when just upgrading my current ROM to a new build) is the following:
Investigate ROM: If a ROM catches my eye, I always read the 1st post in great detail to understand the ROM and it's features. I also look for things like "known bugs" and installation instructions. I then read the last 5-10 pages of the thread to see what the users have to say about the ROM (bugs, issues, fixes, etc). Once I understand the pros and cons of the Rom, I decide if I want to flash it. A lot of "noobs" on here don't read the last 5-10 pages and get into trouble when flashing because of it. I always read at least that much and recommend doing so to others.
Download ROM and check md5sum: I download the ROM to my computer, check the md5sum, and copy it to my phone. Then I check the md5sum again.
Make a backup: Just in case (and it's saved me many a time).
So Fresh and so Clean Clean Wipe: Wipe /data, /system, cache and dalvik cache. This removes all remnants of my previous OS (/system) and any app data that could be left behind (/data). Sometime, if I'm looking for a really fresh start, I'll wipe the internal memory. But that's typically not necessary.
Install Rom: If the ROM has an Aroma installer, I just follow the instructions on it. They're typically straight forward. If there's no Aroma installer, I just flash the ROM and let it do it's thing. If it's an AOSP Rom, I also flash the appropriate gapps, which you don't have to do for TW Roms (gapps are included for them).
Re-download your Apps from Play Store: I know it's quicker to just hit "restore" on TiBu, but since you're having issues with reboots, that's the last thing you should try. The Play Store keeps a record of all of your previously-installed apps, so it's easy to re-install them.
If you follow the above, you shouldn't have any issues with your Rom (that aren't ROM-related).
If you're interested, you can also troubleshoot what was causing the reboots:
Slowly restore data to your apps that need it: Here is where you want to be very careful. In TiBu, if you just go through and restore all data for all apps, you won't know what's causing boot loops. What I'd do is prioritize your data restores. Restore the ones you need most often.
Restore one App's data: If there's an App that must have data restored (game saves), restore only that app's data.
Check to see if the phone has reboot problems: Use the phone normally for a while (a few hours) and see if it reboots. If it doesn't then that app wasn't the cause of the bootloops.
Rinse and Repeat: Repeat steps 2-3 for each app you must have the data restored for. Many apps, like Dropbox, don't need their data restored, you just need to log in again. Again, prioritize which apps you need to restore.
Hope you get your reboots worked out!
