[Q]Differences between baseband in 4.1.2 - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Ive got a question. I cant find an answer as to how these differences in baseband version would affect my day to day phone usage. The reason is because i really want to go back to using AllianceRom 1.0 which has a XXDMA6 baseband and hasnt been updated since. Whats the big difference between DMA6 and DMB6 anyways?

Baseband? That's just the base rom. Well xxdmb6 seems to have fixed the battery issues for many users.
this is XXXDDDAAA

Isn't the baseband just a firmware controlling the radios. I mean that's my understanding. But that's not my question. I just want to know if these updates are region specific or what exactly has been changed to improve this battery life? I mean I honestly didn't notice much of a difference since I was using DMA6 and the latest DMB6

Baseband and the firmware itself are different. Baseband is a part of modem. It is just related to sending the signal to boot up the phone and calls.
Also dmb6 had a new change list. So I think there could be some more under the hood.

Technically speaking a baseband contains the radio firmware that controls basic low level functions such as gps, network and wifi..and that is what I meant when I said it's just a firmware. But it doesn't make sense when you say it sends signal to boot the phone, how is that?

Well the radio or baseband or modem sends the signal to boot when you press power button.
Atleast that was what I read at XDA university.

Baseband is part of SW that controls radios of device like phone and network, wifi, bluetooth etc
When you press power button, the bootloader send signal to boot device. and once device boots, kernel takes control.
the bootloader is code that is executed before any Operating System starts to run. Bootloaders basically package the instructions to boot operating system kernel. So pressing power button, bootloader gets activate and direct the device to load OS.
You can start device even absence of baseband, as many cases we can see unknown baseband though they have normal booting device but without network. So baseband have no role in booting device.

I would assume he meant when he mentioned it boots the device he meant to say the baseband wakes the device whenever someone calls or a message is received. That would make sense.
So its safe to assume that the bootloader is like a BIOS, firmware is like the OS, and the Baseband is just the drivers between the OS and the Radio related hardware such as the wifi and bluetooth.

May be, but pressing power have nothing to do with baseband thats i want to say.

Just difference is in Android firmware itself contains bootloader sometimes.
While on PC it's on MoBo isn't? b'coz without even HDD we can bootup to BIOS.
But yes it is same what you said.
Okay forget to answer original question
I believe baseband is best which comes packed with your ROM unless you are having any network related issue.
In such case i recommend to flash baseband one from latest for your region/carrier. b'coz baseband contains drivers for network and radio and may be they have best one for your network.

flashing a new radio???

is there a way to put a new radio into a rom before flashing it onto your phone or do you need to flash a radio completely seperately than when you flash the rom?

you can flash a rom at any time, or update radio at any time..
i was hoping to just simply change a file in the rom's foler or something instead if that was possible?

The radio is completely seperate from the roms, so you cannot change anything in the rom. Flashing the radio is quite simple, you put the radios zipfile on the root of your sdcard reboot into your bootmanager and it will ask you if you want to update, you choose yes and reboot. That's it. If the radio sucks for you, you can always revert back to one that worked.
wow that is alot simpler than i thought it was. i read around and there were some sites saying it was alot more complicated than flashing roms
will i need to do anything about getting radio-off? some sites said something about that but i have no idea what that really even means i just have security-off

In order to flash radios, roms, kernels etc you need s-off and to be rooted. That's all, hope that helps.

Changing a bootloader can brick a phone, switching a radio can't. Even if you flash a radio that is not for your phone and you get a bootloop you can always do a battery pull, hold down-volume + power and flash the correct radio.
[Noob alert] can you backup your existing radio?

Is there a way to separately backup the radio (in case the new one is problematic)?
Alternately, if you do a Nand Backup through CWM Recovery, which apparently does a complete backup of the phone at that point, does this also include the current radio? Which means, if you flashed a crappy new radio, you'd be able to boot into recovery and Nand Restore the phone, right?
Sorry about the noob questions, but in the Eris world (my prev phone) it was often said that flashing a bad radio was the surest way to brick your phone...
Thx

Nope, and it's strictly a software backup. Just make sure you check md5 before flashing new radio.

No need to backup the radio, just download the correct a different radio for your specific phone if you have any issues with the one you flashed, then boot into recovery plug in your device and choose "toggle usb", that will mount your phone to your PC and you can drag the new radio to the root of your SD card, reboot into bootloader and flash it just like you did the prior. A bad radio will never brick your phone, it will just not allow it to boot or cause other problems when booted. As long as you keep a few different radios meant for your device on your pc you can always drag and drop them into recovery.
Also, Nandroid does not backup radios, the radio does not change when switching roms, it stays the same unless you manually install a new one through bootmanager.

Actually, a radio can brick your phone because it is both writing the baseband image and that in turn writes to the radio's NVRAM (APN settings, etc). If the file is corrupted or not flashed completely, it can make the baseband chip non-responsive to upgrades, thereby bricking the phone. Trust me it happens. I was working on an Incredible 2 that had a corrupted radio flashed and there was no recovering. Not even manual edits to the NVRAM with CDMA workshop would work.
So while it is not likely, the radio can definitely do it. Usually just flashing again will fix errors, but not always.
Just always make sure to check MD5 from the phone before flashing and download from trusted sources.

I stand corrected, thanks for the further input.
I have found it best to transfer the radio file to the SD card using a card reader connected directly to a PC and verify the MD5 on the final media as to connect through the data cable and check MD5 on the PC and assume the transfer went OK.
Of course the best way is to download to phone itself and check the MD5 there.
Either way just remember after flashing the radio, either rename the file or move it to a folder so it's not right there in the root in case you want to use hboot for anything else.
You won't have to wait for the scan AND choose NO to do something else.

Definitely not. If you are stock, you don't need to worry as the radio is included with the update. If you are rooted, there are two branches of radios -- one for the Verizon Incredible 2 and one for the Chinese CDMA version. You only flash the Verizon one unless you are on that Chinese carrier.
Link to Available Radios
The Verizon Radios always start with x.xx.01.xxxx where the Chinese radios are x.xx.50.xxxx.

There were 2 radios that came in GB updates. Follow the link to the radio thread and you can match ROM version to radio version. The newest radio came out with the latest update a few days ago and has not been updated to the OP in that thread, so check the end for the newest.

[Q] baseband

Good Evening guys.
I read on a comment for DooMLoRD saying that if we want to downgrade we should exclude baseband flashing via flashtools, what will this avoid?
I mean if someone included baseband flashing, what will it do to the device?
i don't know how to describe it well.
but baseband is a band that controls all transmitted frequencies. it has something to do with baseband chipset. it affects radio signalling, modem, and other data transfers via radio frequency.
you MUST extremely cautious whenever you want to change baseband.
you MUST check it's compatibility with your phone, otherwise you'll end up brick the precious phone.

[Q] Baseband Unknown, Signal Drops

Hi, i'm from Brazil and i have a Gnex from UK, and it's unlocked.
When i was at 4.0.2, everythings ok, but after the OTA update to 4.0.4, i'm having some problems if the data is turned on, and the option 'only 2g' is checked the signal is good, but if the data is turned on and i have 3G connection the phone lose signal, and baseband shows Unknown.
My Gnex is Yakju, and i have flashed the 4.1 (JRN84D) from here with baseband I9250XXLF1 and 3.0.31-ge8de0e2 kernel ( on the post shows that's a stock kernel ). And the problems still here.
More info about my Gnex on fastboot mode:
Product Name: Tuna
Variant: Maguro
HW Version: 9
BootLoader: PRIMEKK15
Baseband: I9250XXLF1
Sorry for my bad english, but i can't use 3G connection and i need to recive emails, etc
If anyone can help me, thanks!

I'm not 100% sure but I think your kernel maybe be the Developer preview kernel, the official is 3.0.31-g6fb96c9, you could try flashing that? It's what I'm running with 4.1.1 and it works fine.

No, when de signal is dropped i had to take battery out from phone, wait 5 or more minutes than put it back! If i put it back before i have the baseband unknown message on Config > About Phone. And this happens only if i have 3G signal, i see many people saying about signal issues after OTA to 4.0.4 and if i still with "only 2g" selected i don't have signal drop or disable the data, then i don't have any problem

Not sure if it will fix the problem, I think it's in the kernel you have as that's where WIFI is managed, however you could try and if that doesn't work change the kernel.
Instructions on how to update to official 4.1 are here however if you want to then accept the OTA afterwards when following Method 1 do not delete/rename /system/etc/install-recovery.sh and CWM will be overwritten by stock and you should be able to accept OTA's.
Note: If you don't want to lose your data then you could try skipping the "Wipe data/factory reset" step but do that at your own risk, I skipped it and it works fine though.

a "different" kinda phone problem(?)
I looked through most all of these forums and couldnt find anyone with the problem im having. Not sure if it's me or what...
My problem is that when I flash some roms, my phone doesnt work. (yes im on sprint and only using toroplus). Well, yesterday, for most of the day, everything on my phone worked. When I got up this morning, It hadnt charged, and I lost my dialing again. Some ROMs I flash start off. When I go to settings> about phone> status under "Network" it says "unknown" and under "service state" It will say "no service" then checking on "Moblle Network State" It'll say "unknown"", sometimes my phone number shows up, sometimes it doesnt, Most times I cant make outgoing calls and when anyone calls me, it does a half ring and directs my callers straight to my voice mail. Is anyone having this problem too? And if so, how did you fix it? It frustrates the hell outta me and I think I should just go back to ICS although I dont want to. HELLP!!! :-/
Thanks,
Ridge
P.S. I forgot to mention that Im on a Sprint phone and that Im running Houng81's AOKP Aug1 version Baseband: fg01, the kernel that came with the ROM, Ive even replaced them a few times and nothing does any better. Forgot to add this to my prior text LOL sorry, that just gave me away as a n00b huh? HEHE

Doing the OTA might solve it since it will update (i think) your bootloader to lc03, you still on kk15. If it doesnt, use fastboot and update manually. To run an OTA with cwm installed, you need to download the update.zip from dev section for the OTA you want to run, but do it through cwm (like flashing a custom rom).

Updating Bootloaders? Please read this first

Since the new Jelly Bean bootloaders have shown up, I see a lot of people talking about updating them. There are a few things I would recommend to do when flashing them. The first is the small, but present, danger that you can hard brick your phone. And I mean the "Need jtag to make it work" hard brick. Typically the cause of these bricks is an error or interruption of communications between the device and the computer. The other is mismatched or outright improper bootloaders.
Below is a list of things to decrease the possibility of permaborking. Keep in mind that following this list will not 100% remove the danger of flashing bootloaders, but will increase the chances of a successful flash.
Flashing bootloaders is dangerous. They are one of the few things that has the possibility of hard bricking your phone. For that reason, here are some good things to do to prepare for flashing them.
Have a good, reliable data cable. Interruption of communication between your phone and pc will most likely cause a hard brick with bootloaders.
Use a usb port on the back of your computer (or #1 on a laptop). Communication, again.
Have a jig. Not much help if you hard brick, but if you soft brick its very nice to have.
I personally flash bootloaders from a good laptop with a fully charged battery. If there is a power outage, the battery in the laptop will have saved my phone.
When flashing bootloaders,or anything with Odin, don't touch your phone after you connect it in dl mode until the phone reboots. Goes back to the communication issue.
For problems/tips on connection issues, look HERE

My s3's USB port seems damaged physically or something. It charges fine, but it always shows unrecognized USB device when connecting to PC. No matter it is in download mode or booted mode and how hard I try(install updated USB driver, change PC etc. )
No the question comes - can I upgrade boot loader without USB? If not I will be stuck with older version of cm10.1 for ever

No, you need a usb port to do it. You might try using Heimdall, as it uses a different driver. If you use heimdall, you will need to do a lot of research as it operates a little differently than Odin.

Would it be possible to flash a SGH-I747M (Bell) bootloader on a SGH-I747 (AT&T). I would like to have the option to toggle LTE off when I am in a non LTE area without going through the Network Control option discussed on xda, as I have been doing.
If it's not the exact bootloader for your phone, don't flash it.

Maybe use Mobile Odin?

It is not recommended to write bootloader with Mobile Odin. Furthermore, it just won't do it:
From Chainfire:
All partitions are supported, as are loose files, .tar files and .tar.md5 files. Mobile ODIN will even check the MD5 signatures before flashing. While in theory Mobile ODIN can repartition and flash EFS and bootloaders, it will cowardly refuse to do so, for your own safety.

I have no idea why you would have to do that. If you have your setting correct it will do it automatically. My does on Telus. Or did you follow some of the instuctions here and loaded a bad image to your phone. Best to flash a stock image to your phone that has been rooted and then use rom manger or goomanager to flash a recovery to your phone if you want one. I have a rooted stock rom and I no recovery as they are a waste of time. I used triangle to reset the trip and I can update OTA with no issues and it states my devise status is normal. I had used some other rom on my phone and it drained the battery all the time. Now it works like a charm. I can even use back track or other linux distro's on it,
As for the other guy having an issue, you can update your phone over Kies. Your issues sound like its a bad rom you put on your phone. And you can never brick your phone. Its what people to say to scare you to get you to use their methods.
Is it possible that installing a custom rom would have installed the latest bootloader. I didn't install myself and it looks like I have the latest per the device info app I downloaded from the play store

It's possible that the ota update to jelly bean pushed the latest bootloader to your phone.

The AT&T SGH-I747 does not offer the option to toggle LTE off under the Settings Menu, as do the Bell, Telus etc SGH - I747Ms. And although I can and have flashed all sorts of different ROMs, the AT&T modem is RAT locked and I so far have been unsuccessful flashing any modems other than AT&T modems. I am not sure whether this is a software issue or whether it is to do with the AT&T bootloader, hence the question about flashing a Bell bootloader. Any time that I try to flash a non-AT&t MODEM, I temporarily lose my IMEI number and the phone will not work at all. But there is a work around by entering into the Phone Control settings as discussed on xda, ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2116346) which I have been using successfully.

I don't think changing the bootloader will change that for you.

How can I tell what version my bootloader is?
Hey all~
1st, my internet is so sluggish today, I can almost do nothing on the forums, so if this is a repeat question, forgive me, simply reply with the link please.
What I would like to know is how can I find out what version my bootloader is?
I am running CM 10.0 Stable on my Galaxy S3 i747 [AT&T]
I want to update to 10.1 RC4, but I've read warnings relating to the old version of the bootloader, but nothing saying how to tell what version bl I have ...
suggestions?
Thanks

These commands are case sensitive, so type carefully

[Q] Xperia Play R800i automatically reboot whenever wifi is turned on

Hi guys, I am helping to fix my lil bro's r800i.
His phone keeps restarting whenever I turn the wifi on and there is no phone signal. I mean visually the signal bar is there but no calling or checking credit balance could be done.
This happened since he did software update from sony's end to R800i_4.0.2.A.0.42.
Upon lurking xda, I found out these problems may be caused by the baseband.
Therefore I used flashtool to flash:
> R800i_4.0.A.2.368_World
>R800i_4_0_2_A_0_69_WORLD_1_8_1247_6176
>R800_4.0.2.A.0.79
>X10_V1_BLRelock
>and one other custom rom called GB something
I also tried to flash new kernel:
>LuPuS_zeus_Stock-gB+iCsv7-full
>PLAY-GSM-Advanced-Stock-vt
>ExtremeKernel_r3-480p
note: I wanted to try doomkernel but I couldnt find working download link
Other than that, I tried to flash only the baseband:
>Baseband -36
However, I couldn't solve the problems with the previous steps. I need advice from experienced users, thank you guys..
Try phone without sim or with different sim card
Do you know what firmware version was before you update it to .42?
You did right thing with flashing different basebands, but maybe it's hardware fault...
Maybe to try with lowest firmware version you can find?

The sim card is working well in other mobile phone.
So the wifi and signal uses the same hardware?
I will try your suggestion on the lowest firmware flashing and update later on. Thank you Bakisha.

As i know, wifi and network hardware is not related in hardware terms (but i'm not sure)
Also, try wifi in airplane mode (to see is it single or two separate problems)
