My T-mo Note II 2 Battery issue! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

The battery life on my Note II does not seem to compare near at all that of what I have heard and seem from others I am a T-Mobile user and I've seen people get atleast 24 hours or atleast 20 hours on heavy usage, check out my screen shots and see if anyone knows? The battery discharged 1% within 3 minutes!
I even have juice defender enabled which makes it even sadder!

That is average. You may want to not use a live WP though.

Really dont know about battery times of the Note II. But do battery cycles. Let the phone turn off by it self then recharge to 100% a couple of times. And I recommend you downloading BetterBatteryStats to see what really is eating your battery out. Post a screenshot of it and post it, let some of the BBS veterans diagnose the problem. With what I know I can help. BTW you on stock/stock (ROM/kernel)?

Looks like you have ****ty signal most times. If you're on wifi most of the time turn off mobile data and use wifi calling if you need. If you turn off mobile data and it still dies that quick somethings wrong. Also juice defender can oftentimes have a negative effect, try it without. Also, you used your phone almost continuously. 5 hours screen time out of 8?

Don't cycle your battery. Will only hurt your battery not help. System Tuner also works nice to tweak a few things and add some battery, Better BatteryStats is a great tool as well.

Yeah juice defender is causing a ton of wakelocks. Of course, again you seem to have zero data connection or signal most times. If you use your phone almost constantly juice defender will def have a negative effect. I know from experience.

Ok. First uninstall Juice Defender its only making it worse. When not using GPS turn it off. You have weak signal plus GPS on thats 3x the drain since its always looking for location. Again same with WiFi. When not in a place with it turn it off.

Good to hear! Also screen brightness has a lot to do with screen on time.. It not the same 3h of screen on time with 100% brightness than with 30%. The less bright as possible the better buddy.

+1 100% brightness is awesome but a major killer on battery when you don't really need it.

Its better than that one day however I did not begin to use it intensely until later on at night and just played a few games of ruzzle on wifi and it dropped about 15% within the 2 hours so its a so so solution as of now I ordered a gold battery with 4200mAh of power hopefully that'll show some improvement

I'm runnng the international XXDMB6 based ROM on mine and currently, I'm at 76% with only an hour and 3 minutes of screentime?
I don't use Wi-Fi.
My LTE signal is rather poor.
My screen generally stays around 50% but it's on auto.
Of course I let my apps sync. But that's pretty much just gmail and facebook.
I have my weather set to sync once every hour.
I uninstalled the apps that are pretty much bloat (flipfonts, the hubs, the samsung live wallpapers, musicFX since I use DPSManager, Samsung's music app and that's all I can think of)
I'm running Perseus's kernel with about 200-350mV undervolts.
Is it truly the poor LTE signal that's taking such a toll on my battery life? I used to average 5-5.5 hours before my battery dies. Now I'm betting I'll only get around 4. When I had Verizon, the power draw from LTE was unnoticeable from 3G. Is it really that different on GSM phones?

I found Battery Drain Analyzer helpful. I kept it running for a couple of months and was able to determine which apps consume the most power (widgets, by far). But, after having spent weeks trying different underclocking configurations and apps without success, I ended up buying three extra batteries. It's really awesome to not have to worry about it. I just keep them in my pocket and swap them out as needed. It's not a very technologically advanced solution, but, it sure is effective. I use this Charger for the spares. It takes a long time to charge the batteries, but charges them fully to 100% and I believe that the batteries hold the charge better, whereas, charging the battery in the phone doesn't seem to work as well.
If you would rather go the tweak/underclock route, I agree with the others that Juice Defender does more harm than good. I had better luck with SetCPU.
But, as stated above, I eventually opted for high performance and extra batteries. For me, the ability to run the phone at full speed, to multitask smoothly, and generally to be able to take advantage of the device's full technological potential is worth the cost of the spares. And, not insignificantly, now that I am no longer spending time on trying to increase battery life through hacks/tweaks/apps, I have more time (and speed and processing power since I can overclock without concern) to flash, mod, tweak, and customize all the other aspects of my phone.

Does anyone use 4G on all day and get good batt?

Want to get a small survey. Do you guys leave 4G on all day and only 4G, no JuiceDefender or radio tricks and get good battery?
Post your results please!
I use Setcpu for screen off and underclock to 1.35 GHz and average 12 hours allowing 4g to stay on throughout my day.

I've been getting about the same battery length whether I'm on 4G only or WiFi+EDGE - which is around 6-8 hours. This is without additional battery-saving techniques.
i get around 8-9 hours if i leave 4g on....... without it 12+
what settings do you have on setcpu i have it downloaded but i haven't used it on this phones tips will help
Yes 4G on, no JD help, no wifi relying. My buddy's Droid bonic has the extended 2880 mah battery and I'm darn jealous, keeps LTE on and lasts a day streaming google music all day. This is obviously the perfect setting we all want, fast 4G, sync on, blistering powerhouse, no compromise usage.
I've got a profile during screen off for 384mhz/192 powersave
Main is 1350/192 ondemand. Phone remains smooth and usable.

I'm really shock today, picked up an exchange yesterday and today I'm getting over 15hrs with 4G on and fully stock and I still have 33% left. This is with a few calls, music streaming and texting.
First unit I would get around 8-10hrs.
So yeah, I'm a happy camper, lol.

That's really good and your initial numbers are more in line with the majority of the members here. I wonder if its ether phone itself or the battery. :-T
im surprised as well i leave everything on and the phone is still alive all day. have 4g on, sync, stream, web, text, couple calls, screen brightness set to automatic.
i think if i do some battery saving techniques i could push 2 days/
been on for 13 hours and still have 26%.
way better than the 8 - 10 hour max on my vibrant.
havent had to worry about charging my phone on at all

Wow, there has to be some issue causing some of us to only get 8 hours out of a battery and others getting 13+. Starting to make me wonder if I have a bad one.
I keep 4g on & I get good battery life too. I don't underclock or even mess with the CPU at all either.
im starting to wonder if I got one with a really good battery, ill post screens tomorrow but since I bought the phone like 3 weeks ago I have Never turned off 4g. im on wifi at home but where I work for 8 or more hours in on 4g. i leave wifi on anyway and i dont use juice defender or any power saving modes, i tend to use full brightness, and i play with my phone (checking phandroid and cnet/videos, rev3 etc...) whenever I'm not in a sale.
all of that and my battery always lasts more than 12 to 15 hours.
I will charge tonight and post screens either as soon as I remeber when on low battery.
is anyone else getting great battery life?

i only know my own definitions of high and low use I guess but id estimate an average of being touched at least 60% of every hour, up to 90% at work and when I'm bugging my fiance for playing with my phone too much at home its up to 100 lol
and at least once a day I flash something and reboot twice and run sd maid and i play some games like shadowgunner, samurai vengeance 2 and i love dragon fly :-D
I'm rooted btw

Just my two cents, but I leave my 4g on all the time. I literally never turn it off and I get a full days (moderate) use out of my SGS II. I don't know how, but this is BY FAR the very best battery life i've ever gotten out of an Android; and I've owned quite a few out them by this point (since the original hero). I know it's battery is very large for an oem/ as it comes battery and for me I can really tell.
Amazing battery life on a single charge
I'm getting 13+ hours with 4G on all day. Simply amazing battery life.
My phone is rooted with Teshxx streamlined ROM loaded, with no additional power saving apps of features running.
I'm in an area with amazing 4G signal, my phone never switches to 3G/Edge.
It is possible your mileage may vary if the phone is switching constantly between the two.

I was having random shutdowns, like 10 a day. So far no problem with this second one.
My first one I did only get around 8-12hrs, but I hadn't mess with my apps.
This time around I set up the apps the refresh themselves to do it every 4hrs (like Facebook, tweeter, weather bug, etc)

TIPS for Improving Battery Life

Hey guys, so i've noticed that a lot of people are complaining about their battery lives. There are a few things that I have done which are not too complicated that I think the rest of you should do too (if you haven't done so already). With these steps, i have my brightness almost to the max the entire time, and the battery lasts me most of the day without needing to charge.
1) Calibrate your battery - This first step is a given, and should definitely be done, especially after rooting. You can find steps by searching in the forums for how to calibrate battery.
2) Uncheck "Use Wireless Networks" in the Locations menu in the settings. This is a huge battery hog, if not the biggest on the phone (next to brightness and 4G). If you feel like you need it to use the "Places" app better, then you can either always turn on GPS just when you need to use it, or just search for whatever you want in Google Maps directly. Many ways around this problem.
3) ROOTED USERS ONLY - Get a root explorer, go into /system/apps and move the following apps to a different folder, preferably on the sd card: Socialhub.apk, Mediahub.apk, Sprintzone.apk, SprintID.apk (sometimes called w_sprint.apk). Obviously if you use those apps, dont move them because you'll essentially be deleting them, but from my experience most people don't use them, and they are always just running in the background. Huge battery hogs as well.
- You can also delete the other sprint apps through the usual app removal process if you'd like.
Also, if you use widgets such as Beautiful Widgets, or Minimalistic Text, for time and weather that require Use Wireless Networks for updates, it would be best not to use them. Especially BW, drains a good portion of the battery. There are other alternatives that I feel are just as good, such as a decent looking modded stock digital clock and the genie widget from ICS (Thats what i personally use). They take a fraction of the others and provide the same information.
Very nice tips. I didn't really like media hub and got tired of seeing it.. but the sprint files you mentioned weren't in my folder.. The apps are still there
EDIT.. also can you like me to battery calibration instructions? O didn't even know that was a thing...

I am always so surprised to read people with bad battery life. I have a stick phone running all sick items except having root and I well easily get well over a full day on my battery. I plug it in asst the end of the day with 60% battery on a regular and that is after 14-16 hours. GPS always on, brightness on auto, sync what needs to be synced, using the phone as a phone, with Bluetooth at times as well. The only time I lose significant power is when I use Netflix or start running games for an hour or so.
Are people running stock on this or a built ROM? Also, are you running stock kernel with CWM? CWM put my battery into a hole so I went back to stock without CWM, no idea why out would do it though.
Examples of battery life.

It seems to me like from those pictures that you barely use your phone for other things than making calls. The reason that i can come to that conclusion is because your display battery usage is just so much less than your Android OS, that just means your screen is off for the majority of the day. I'm assuming from that that you're probably an older gentleman who has less use for things like texting and Facebook. Unfortunately, the majority of my communication is through those 2, as well as some other channels.
And to answer your other question, i am running stock rooted without cwm.

I guess i can just describe it for you, its pretty simple. Just follow the following steps:
1) charge your phone to 100% (if it reaches 100 unplug it then plug it back in, it'll most likely take another 20 minutes to truly reach 100)
2) if you are rooted and have clockwork mod recovery, boot into recovery, and wipe the battery stats. Then continue to the next step. If you are not rooted, dont worry, just go onto the following step anyway.
3) from the market, download a battery calibration app and calibrate it.
4) then use your phone regularly throughout the entirety of its battery cycle (don't plug it in for mini charges until it fully dies)
5) when it dies, recharge it back to a full 100% (don't unplug it before it reaches 100%).
Then you're done.

I wouldn't jump to that conclusion. By the end of a 16-hour day, I have about 2-hours of screen-time, and my battery is around 50%. I have corporate email on my phone, so it wakes up frequently, and I check my messages all day long.
There's also the issue with Android OS taking up way more of the battery charts than it's supposed to. Most of the time, that bar is 2x longer than my display bar, unless I unplug it and play a game for four or five hours. There is a bug on this phone, that either calculates the Android OS bar improperly, or the phone is genuinely using tons of battery in the background and Android OS is a giant battery drain.
If you hang out on the forums a bit longer, you'll see this pop up pretty often.

lol, I've actually already read those forums before, but the thing is that I just don't think its a bug with those people. The thing is that its simply a balance. If your screen is set to a very low brightness, or just off most of the day, it clearly won't be the main battery drainer, but all that means is that something else will be. Something will always be the main battery drainer, even if its not draining that much.
Maybe it just makes more sense in my head than on here, but I'm pretty sure lol.

That's even better with showing you all his awake time. It is in fact a bug. Here is a bug report in Google's bug tracker. Here's another. There's also a very long XDA thread that explains what the Android OS bug actually is, and how it works.
If the lines are proportional, then Android OS is using more power than 2 hours of display time, and I've gone as high as 5 hours and 30 minutes. I've had times when 4 hours of screen time is still less than Android OS. What? That makes no sense.
From the XDA thread:
Same network, same location, same signal strength, same ROM (Changing my font maybe fixed it....) , same wakelocks between them, same background apps running. Not even 5 minutes screen time on the two. The only difference with .14 patched kernels I'm experiencing is that it's not showing up anymore in the stats, but it drains just as much as in the right screen, showing the same CPU state behavior. It's also happening less often, and many say it's not happening at all anymore, but how would they know it it's hidden now?
Click to collapse
Before that were two screenshots. One of them showed a minimal Android OS bar, while the other had it at 95%. The only difference was the patched kernel. This. Is. A. Bug. Period. High Android OS usage means absolutely nothing. Even after tracking down wakelocks, it will be high or low pretty much at random. Sometimes this is a legit stuck suspend, in which case rebooting is the only fix. Other times, it's just the bad profile. There's no way to know unless you study CPU spy, better battery stats, and possibly Watchdog.
In any case, read that XDA thread that explains what Android OS is. It has very little to do with how much screen time you have.
trifthen said:
If the lines are proportional, then Android OS is using more power than 2 hours of display time, and I've gone as high as 5 hours and 30 minutes. I've had times when 4 hours of screen time is still less than Android OS. What? That makes no sense.

wow, thats crazy.
I'm not trying to bash you or say I get bad battery life. I just don't see someone who is taking his or her phone out every 10mins getting emails, and calls, social updates, background syncing is going to get 10hours of battery with just about 95% left.
Maybe if all you do is check emails and take 15 min calls and put your phone back into sleep mode you can probly get that. But even then. I can't say real world usage = 10hr with 95% left. only if you have a extended battery on
From my Samsung GS2 E4GT
This is with an hour of screen time. Admittedly, that's less than half my normal usage, but I was working on my book on the train instead of reading reddit. I'd normally be in the 50's by now with about 2.5 hours of screen time.
Way better than my Eris.

manages the radios as well basically it does what Juice defender does but it is more simpler and easier to use from what i have gathered
Actually it sounds to me like Juice Defender ultimate has a couple of extra features. I've been using Easy Battery Saver and really like it, but I'm switching over to JuiceDefender so I can use the enable/disable WiFi based on location (since I only use WiFi when im at home). EBS doesnt support that (yet).
Either way, if you have a One X, you should be running one of these apps as they really do seem to make a difference. If didnt touch my phone for a few hours the other day, and it only lost 1%. It puts the phone in super-idle mode when you're not using it, especially due to disabling mobile data (and 3G) when the screen is locked and the phone is in your pocket. Awesome idea. The phone then wakes up momentarily to do things like check for new emails, etc, based on a schedule you can tweak. These apps are must haves.
I agree either one is great to have. IMO, I don't think Juice Defender Ultimate turns on the network (Wifi 3g) fast enough, which can cause some waiting and annoyance.
will try and give a feedback after a couple of days
Installed tonight, I got 8 hours from my battery today, that was with fairly heavy use.
Will see how it goes tomorrow with this app. What settings are you guys using with it?

well, Im getting really horrible battery times on my one x and I really dont get how you guys manage to squezze so many battery hours out of your devices. I can get just over 3 hours of non gaming, non heavy application screen time until the battery is completely depleted and this is with juicedefender up and running. Juicedefender does improve my batter life a little bit, it is noticeable, however its not significant. I tried a number of different battery apps and so far juicedefender is the ONLY one that has worked at all but as I already mentioned, the improvement is very small although good enough for me to keep using it.

Forgot my phone in the sun

Hey guys, I forgot my new sexy white Gnex in the sun a few days ago. It got so hot that I could barely hold it in my hands I'd like to know what damage could there be from this overheating? As far as I know, heat kills lithium batteries really bad. But what else should I check?
This is the battery life I get since this happened ( no data active, just occasional small sessions of wifi browsing, and brightness set to 25%, with stock 1750 mAh battery) :

Both. I can usually consistently get around 12-15 hours overall on Wi-Fi and around 5 hours and 15 minutes of screen on. Thats as far as i can push it with normal use like browsing on tapatalk. Browsing the webs... Google+ and Youtube normal "smartphone" activities. I dont have anything syncing i refresh things my self... and am normally on my laptop anyways. But on my Crappy Sprint 3G i only get around 2 or 3 hours with the same overall time.

Why did you quote the entire OP in your post? It's pretty obvious who you were replying to, it was the second post!!!!
Reading over this thread, all the individual posts only present one combined set of what I consider the bare minimum info to have a battery life report be intelligible:
-Capacity of the battery (this is the one it seems like nobody ever mentions, props to ÜBER™)
-Total time
-Screen on time
Without all three of those as the foundation I don't think that any of the other info people like to quote can actually be understood. Qualifiers like "mostly on wifi/all on 4g/[screenshot of stats]" are still important for further context, but they stand on those three to mean anything.
A sample of my reactions to posts missing one of these, and what I've come to just assume about them:
-Oh your phone lasted twice as long as mine? Great, you've probably got a battery that's double the capacity.
-Your screen on time is incredible? Oh but you have the exact same screen on:total time ratio as everyone else, just dragged to one extreme.
-You think something's wrong with your phone because you don't get as good battery life as everyone you see posting on XDA? Oh but it turns out that you unplug it and don't put it down until it's dead.
Pissing contests are still contests, gotta follow the rules people!

When you said this was with no data active, does that mean data is actually disabled, or just that you're not using it?
Just looking at your screenshots and comparing the slope of different parts of the graph, nothing looks too out of the ordinary. Your one stretch of inactivity is nice and level. Your periods of sustained use all seem to drop at a comparable rate.
If you're concerned that the battery is erratic, try putting it in airplane mode (not just disabled data) and seeing if it doesn't just flatlane. This should reduce pretty much any interference in your data (unless you can see that a rogue app keeps the phone awake the entire time, but that'd be obvious if it happened). Obviously the catch being that it would probably take weeks to get a full picture, so try just draining it down to a low state and flipping it into airplane mode before you go to sleep. Flatline for the night= put the issue to rest. Highly variable graph=get a new battery and put the issue to rest.
But from what you've written, nothing looks out of the ordinary about your data to me. Sounds like you're not actually firm in the belief that anything is very different, just concerned that you broke something and looking too hard to find things that aren't there.

Stock... Sweet huh? I found that by disabling fast dormancy it makes a huge difference in standby battery drain. Unfortunately it only works on stock (all versions). Without it the internal timer is always waking up the phone to check on network status which really isn't needed. I also have gotten away from using the hi-cap so on could use cases

I actually didn't look maybe a little less than an hour. Did surf for a while and paid some bills a few phone calls and the flat spot on the graph was over night so it would say very light use. I usually use my phone a lot more but forgot my charger at work so I was deliberately used it conservatively. The dashes below the graph are the wake times.

I'm getting pretty much the same with data turned off (sync for 5 mins only every hour) and not using the phone (2-3 % discharge per hour).
But the thing is, when i actually use the phone (screen, web browsing) it discharges like 30-40% per hour (non-stop use). I feel this is wrong, is it?
Fast dormancy fix applied.

We have almost no adjustments that can be made with screen on. Maybe some tweaking here or there. My biggest concern was power drain with screen off. I set out on this quest when I first got the phone in May and it had Gingerbread and I was draining like 5% / hr with the screen off. CM9 was better but horrible with screen on. I found stock to be the best balance but until I found this FD app it was still draining 1-2% per hour now it's like every 2 - 3 hrs. To get back to your question.... Is it normal? Well yes and maybe it really depends on what you are doing.. Surfing the Web... Not so much. Talking on the phone.... Playing games, etc heck yes that is normal. Try adjusting screen brightness and also an app like juice defender that can dynamically adjust cpu & screen.

You are missing the whole point of my posting. I was promoting the capability to improve the Nitro's battery life while in standby. We Nitro users can get all the battery life we can get and it is up to you if you want to reduce stand by battery usage by over 50% by using this FD toggle app. I would suggest trying this app for 2 days and use your phone like you normally do then two days without it and see for yourself if you have better battery life. Just a heads up with the app DISABLE must be selected for it to work. Pay special attention to Android System power usage vs Cell Standby power usage. If Android System is more than Cell Standby you will have greater power usage with screen off.
Sent from my LG-P930 using xda app-developers app
my point was i get better battery life than that with no battery saver and no fast dormant tool, i use liquid nitro v6 and callibrate my battery every other week, right now this is what my usage reads.
35% battery remaining.
Usage
36% screen
18% standby
13% android os
8% phone idle
7% android system
5% media server
5% wifi
4% voice calls
3% bluetooth
2% power amp
2% google chrome
Time 1D 0H 55M 45s On battery (still35% remaining)
this battery will still last another 10 hours, total usage will be around 36 hours and i used LESS standby/idle time than you, hense i'm getting far more out of my battery with less mods. im running V20c liquid nitro V6 wind kenerl v3.0 with NO BATTERY APPS (battery apps usually consume as much energy as they save sometims more sometimes less depending on system environment) the stock battery saver on this phone doesn't even turn on until 30% battery so mine hasn't turned on yet, but all it does is disable whatever services u want once phone reaches 30%. if you want to get more out of your battery, just run an efficient rom, calibrate battery properly (ask me if u need info) and be smart with what apps you install.
---------- Post added at 08:04 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:03 AM ----------
i'm gonna let the battery run under 5% then take a screenshot
The FD tool actually doesn't stay resident it initiates a script that starts at boot but I would be interested in the other tools you have used as it might also work on other OS's as I am playing with 10.1 right now. One word of caution I have been told by devs on this site that battery calibration does more harm than good. Also I haven't been able to run v6 phone keeps rebooting
One more thing what battery are you using and what was your on screen time? Well I guess that's two

Yeah these batteries don't like to go all the way to zero. I've owned 9 android devices and have tinkered a lot- the conclusion I've drawn is that you get a nice placebo effect from "calibrating" the battery.
i tested 3 batteries, their life on standby and running video from 100% to 0% and all 3 batteries had better life after calibration, in every test. call me crazy but it seems to work. the only explination i can come up with is that people don't do it properly. i got my battery wipe procedure from this page: i did exactly what he said to calibrate my battery i tested 3 differant batteries and it helped all 3 one of them got 15% more life on video playback and 35% more on stanby after calibration.

step 3 is battery calibration. EDIT -> this step is found under section 2b Operation System.
note: i am not agreeing with everything on this thread i'm just saying that i tested batteries after using those steps for calibration and they all performed better after.
side note: it would be interesting to test what the battery lifes would be if i was to wipe the battery stats in CWM whent he battery was 50% charge. then let randomly charge it without doing the proper full discharge and recharge, and see if that ruins that battery life. i suspect that it would, and this is why people think it harms the battery, im not an expert this is just an assumption. my testing was not extensive enough to prove this only to prove that the batteries i was using had better life on the roms i tested them on in both video and standby after calibration.
few things i want to point out.
i used my phone more (less standby and more screen usage)
i got longer battery life.
i didn't waste 7% of my battery on juice defender
i used more apps and media tools.
i'm using stock battery and my rom is linked in sig
i had wi-fi or data on 24/7 sometimes both
stock battery.
as i respect other peoples opinions my science background leads me to lead towards strong evidence until i see stronger evidence supporting another theory.
here is battery at 7%
*edit* for the purpose of this test i turned off the stock battery saver (the thing that turns off wifi etc under 30%) at 32% so it never even came on
