I apologize if you're tired of hearing this, just want to weight my options and get some feedback before I dive in.
So my upgrade is in and I'm looking to move on from my 4S (Love the little bastard but Ill still have him around as my dev phone). I'm pretty dead set on a Note (The One looks gorgeous, but the screen size, battery and pen make it for me), but I'm wavering back and forth here on getting a Note 2 or waiting for the Note 3.
So my question, knowing what you guys currently do about your device, if you were in my position would you wait for the Note 3 or pickup a Note 2?
I plan to rid my phone of touchwiz (Minus some of the niftier features) if it makes any difference.
Eitherway, my first Android phone since my Nexus One. Excited.
Have you played with note 2 yet? If you haven't make sure you do,then you will know if its for you or not.

I've gotten a chance to mess around with it in an AT&T store and a friends for a few minutes during lecture. I'm fully convinced it's what I want. I'm just trying to mull over if I want to get it now or wait it out. Hell even the rumors of the Note3 being 6.3 inches doesn't put me off too much long as it fits in my pocket.
In fact I'm quite looking forward from going from this tiny 3.5 inch screen to this behemoth.
I love the note 2. It does everything I need it to do. Except fold my laundry. I just wish there was a way to run custom roms with out increasing the flash counter. Triangle away works great but as soon as you reboot it detects that custom recovery and raises the counter again.

The Note 3 may not be out for another 6 or 7 months...
I'd get the Note 2 now and enjoy the crap out of it.. Unless you can stand the pain of waiting that long for the Note 3..
I upgraded 2 weeks ago from the Skyrocket to the Note II. So far, I've been really pleased with it. It's fast, the screen is gorgeous without being too big, and it has more functionality than I'll ever use.
I bought it mainly for the bigger screen (older guy here) and I can't tell you how nice it is to read email without my glasses on. The battery easily lasts me all day, even on LTE, with 4+ hours of screen on time and 17+ hours between charges. Since I travel a lot for my job, battery life is crucial.
I can't imagine you having any regrets over the Note II, but everyone's different. I'll watch the Note III come and not have any regrets about the II at all.

I'm MORE than satisfied with the note 2,at first I was put off by the price and size, but i was able to swing it from att for 199!
That would be about the same price I'd pay for another new release phone so why not.
I'm a big root/rom guy and I've had this device since February and have not touché it, it's amazing stock, fast as ever, nothing slows it down, battery is INCREDIBLE. I've never had a device so good on battery. Take the picture I'm posting below, I fell asleep without charging it and it's still at 24% battery with heavy usage and being off the charger since 530am Friday morning.
Just get it, if you don't love it you can return it, hell why wait around for note 3 or s4 when u have no idea when it will get released, atleast if the s4 or note 3 is what you want later on you can easily sell the note 2 because they keep their resale value nicely like your 4s does.

Yes...it's still a good time to pick up a Note II...regardless what is going to come out in a month or 2. You can wait around till your old and gray and still be waiting on the next new phone to be pushed to market...lol...lol.
There will always be something on the drawing boards waiting to be brought out or rumored to be...so you might as well buy one..root it..load a custom rom & theme and be happy for a year...This phone will be updated to KLP soon..so you have the option and can use it stock configuration for a while and see just how far Touch Wiz has grown up..or try one of the other flavors readily available to you..or..do as many of us do and switch between them all seeing what & how they work.
I recommend rooting it right away..load a custom launcher like Nova or Apex & Jedi roms myself..allowing you to keep the full functionality of TW and all of it's neat features..removing all of the unneeded bloat and making it way more user freindly..just make sure you try out the Perseus kernel as well...It has some very nice features to be able to adjust the sound quality using our Wolfson DAC the phone comes with and also our picture quality to a higher level than ever before and better than anything else on the market if you have a desire to get into doing that so be sure to check out the thread over in the Original Andoid Developers forum for our AT&T phone...btw...I have nothing against the Saber kernel that comes with the Jedi rom..it is a great kernel in it's own right very fast...very stable.. and I switch between them often...but I do love having the ability to tweak my phone..and the Perseus kernel allows greater lattitude doing so.
Lastly...just because you have a Touch Wiz base rom..don't think for a minute it lags behind anything else..Our developers know how to tweak them to make them preform to their max capabilities sooo much better than what comes from the AT&T store as stock..While stock roms are nice and work really well..a custom rom like Jedi..will take your phone to a completely new level..I normally get 8-9 hours of screen time on a day & 1/2 normal to heavy useage..and am over clocked to either 1.8 or 1.92 mhz and have my gpu running at 800 mhz...so mine is very fast and fluid with any app or movie I choose to use/watch...but YMMV with yours.
Good luck with what ever you choose

Its all about personal preference. I have both phones and I havent charged my iphone for 3 months. I dont know about the wifi/data bug, it has never affected me. In my opinion the only advantage iphone has over samsung is iphone does not allow carriers to modify software and add bloat. In new jersey you can get a g note 2 for $350 but it will have a cracked screen, good conditioned ones are 500-600.

Thats only because apple does not lower the price of the phone until a new model comes out a year later. Galaxy s3 started at 199 , 3 months later you could get it for 149 , black friday I bought 2 of them for 99 cents each. Which greatly lowers the resell price.

I'm in the LA area and the Note 2 sells for $500-$600 here on Craigslist..
iPhone 5 sells for about the same as the Note 2.. The iPhone 4S goes for about $300-$350 and the iPhone 4 goes for about $200-$240. The Note 1 still sells for about $300.
No clue where you are in California but I found your statement as very odd!

I bought mine in Palm Springs, for $149 on contract first day of release. Well we got a deal because my friend also got a tablet. On the same purchase. So we both got hooked up that day.
I would say if your trying to get one off of Craigslist then check different areas. You'll find one cheap, or someone willing to trade for something else. I personally like to get all my products brand new. Because I'm the only owner of it!!

The Note 2 is a beast. Yea they're very similar but using both, I can definitely feel the quad core performance advantage on the Note 2. Side by side I could also tell a distinct difference in the brightness and saturation of the screen. And probably the biggest difference is the battery. You can literally go days on one charge with heavy use. The GS3, not so much. If you're into phablets, def go with the Note 2.
I had Note 2 to play around with for a couple of weeks and I've owned SGS3 since July. I thought the Note 2 was solid but it was just too darn big for my liking. That was pretty much the only issue I had with the Note 2. I love how big the Note 2 screen is and all but I hated walking around with it in my pants pocket.

These two posts hit my experience with the Note 2 right on the head.
Like X_Fact0r, I've had the S3 since July. I decided to give the Note 2 a try and while it's a GREAT phone, I just couldn't get past the size. If someone has already had the S3, it feels like the Note 2 is just a S3 on steroids. For me, it wasn't worth the nearly $700 off-contract price to feel like I was just getting a bigger screen and I returned it. I also didn't think I'd use the S-Pen very much, although if I'd kept it for good, I may have found that it was really useful.
Add to that how good the development is for the S3, and I just decided to stick with it. But I'm not bashing the Note 2 at all. It worked flawlessly and if you don't mind having a small tablet in your pocket, it's a great choice. But I LOVE my S3, so I stuck with it.
Very interesting to see how the S3 people feel about this as opposed to the Note II users.
Mainly it looks like it's just a size issue here. And for the Note II guys, they thought the same until they put it to good use; multi-tasking and such.
I'd like to hear from more people.. For the sake of knowing.
& thanks OP for posting over here as well.
I played with one at best buy and it honestly I say gs3. Not to get all Apple but it was difficult to use one handed which is nice about the gs3 is that it is perfect size just pushing the boundaries of comfort. Also the price tag IMO is inexcusable. The note II might be a better phone but with the gs3 I feel you are getting your monies worth for what we pay. The note II did seem more durable than the sgs3 issue solved with a d30 case though

To me the Note 2 is a better phone. Size, pen, battery life and quad core are awesome!
For the money an S3 for 99 is a great deal. For instance if a Note 2 user would offer me their Note 2 if I gave them my S3 and $200 I would keep the S3.
Pretty much that is why I still have the S3 today

That's exactly what it was for me. I'd gotten into the "bigger is better" mentality, but I found it was just too big for my tastes.
The odd thing, and this was just my experience, was that I expected with the quad core hype it would be the smoothest phone I could find. I actually ended up having some unexpected lag. This was just with the stock launcher, but it was still there. It must have just been an aberration, though.
My S3 is smooth as silk.
I'll take the s3 over n2 any day.
I have the GS III, my wife has the Note II. For me the size of the GS III is perfect, just on that edge of being too big. The note 2 however is just too big for my tastes, but then again my wife drops hers in her purse, so carrying it is not an issue. If I want a bigger screen I bust out my transformer tablet, or even worse my toshiba laptop.
But I do like both devices for what they are and what they are capable of doing. Now if your a BIT of an artist always looking for a canvas, then the note 2 is more for you. Just not for me. I love my GS III, that is until the next shiny thing that comes along...oh look a penny....
I have both, S3 from July and Note 2 from Nov. I like note 2 better.
I played with the note recently and I honestly don't think I could get over the size of that thing. I put it to my ear and it was like I literally had a book to my ear.

I've had my S3 since July, and now I wish I had waited for the Note 2 before signing up for a contract. I wonder if I can sell my S3 for $300 and pay the difference for a Note 2 at retail price. I don't mind the size. If anything is worth doing or achieving for you, then there's no reason to be embarrassed.

my GF has the GS3 and I have the note 2... I literally have spotify streaming music for 10 hrs per day on average... surf ebay and craigslist apps constantly at the same time... play videos and use the multiview ability all the time... sounds silly but its useful with whatsapp! I never turn anything off! I have wifi, BT, NFC, all motion, all samsung, no power saving, basically zero concern for battery draw and after 18 hours of constant use... I end my days with around 20% battery remaining! The GS3 is nothing close. Plus the raw power and freakish speed of the GN2 is unreal! I can scroll any list no matter the length at maximum speed and never induce even one shutter... wicked fast! So yeah... I'm sticking with the Note2.
I have a s3, 2 note 2s. s3 is a better bang for your buck but note 2 destroy s3 in
Everything IMO..

I'm in the market for a new phone. I've been looking between the Note 2, SGS4 and the HTC One. I'm kind of leaning towards the Note 2 but I'm concerned that it might not be the best time to buy one of these. Thoughts/suggestions?
why would now be a bad time to buy the best phone on the market?
I'm concerned how well the phone will hold up over the next two years. I don't want to get left out in the cold because I decided to buy the Note 2 instead of the SGS4
it hasnt been out for 2 years, so no one can answer that question...
OK, let's simplify this. You were up for renewal, choice is a Note2 (assuming you dont own one) or an SGS4. Which would you choose?

Unfortunately that doesn't help when I'm on the road for work
note 2 no contest...
I couldn't wait and got the gnote2 a couple of weeks ago. I sold my gnote first and that covered the cost with the 2 year contract. So I'm happy.
I got it at Walmart since it was a lot cheaper than at&t store or online and just 10 more tjan amazon and I didn't have to wait 5 days even with amazon prime, weekend I guess.
My thinking was the s4 might drop the price of the note2 a bit but the note1 is stikl 200 at at&t store.

It all depends on your budget and your need. If you're on the road constantly then the Note would be best for you because of the big battery. Again it all is dependent on your type of usage as well as budget. If money is not an issue I'd say the s4.

I'm going to recommend the Note 2. I just installed CM 10.1 and have underclocked to 900Mhz and the device still runs as smooth as I need it to day in and day out. Keep in mind that 900Mhz is nearly half of what the processor is capable of.

Until concrete numbers are in I'm going to say the Note 2 just on battery size. Lets face it doesnt matter what ohone you have, with no juice it's ni good. Note 2 has 3100 mah and S4 has 2600 mah. Biggest difference for battery comsumption is screen but the difference in battery size doesnt make up the difference.
2600 for a 5" LTE phone is terrible; my wifi SGP 5.0 was "ok" with 2500; my original AT&T Note kinda ok with an aftermarket 2700. Bleh.
It's always a bad time to buy a new phone.
There will always be a new one coming out or just around the corner. ..
Your on the Note II forum. ..so expectations and answers to be more positive for it than any other.
Right now. ..this phone is still the best for those who want a big screen. .fast cpu..plenty of new roms/themes/add ons and have a Spen to use.
Others have their own strength and weakness as well. .so figure out what you really want. ..and go from there.
Being stuck with this phone for 2 years isn't a problem. ...if it has what you want and need really. ..it's just not going to be the latest version out soon. ...BTW plenty of folks still use their Note 1's....
Ask yourself what you need. ..as opposed to what the companies are promoting as the next big great thing...because this is how they rope folks into always wanting something new.

Hi All
At the moment I am using HTC Sensation but am due for upgrade (3UK) Dont like HTc at the moment had lots of problems so thought I would give Samsung a try.
I have never had a Samsung phone so am undecided about which to go for. I like the screen size on the Note 2 and from what I have heard the battery is great (HTC Crap) I use it for internet a lot and email ,when i have my Tablet I would use it to tether if this is possible with the note. Watch some video nd use word documents.
I can get either the Note 2 or S4 as free upgrade so any advice would be appreciated as to which is best. My main requirement is battery, the HTC I had to carry two batteries to last the day...
Thanks all.
Battery - undoubtedly go for Note II. No second thoughts there. Hands down has the best battery life of all phones except Droid Razr (which lacks quite a few features of N2).
If you like the screen size, and battery life is your priority, it's a no brainer IMO.

I've just had to make the sane decision as you. I'm also in 3 and I decided on the note 2 for screen and battery and after a week I made the right choice. After it being off charge since 7am this morning it's now 8 at night and I have 52% left.
I just made this decision, went with N2. It's already ready to go development wise and you don't have to worry about new phone hiccups or wait a long time for a proper portfolio of accessories. Plus the bigger screen, s pen, and most likely better battery make it worth it to me.
But if you're a stock ROM guy, really want 1080p res, or want the new CPU architecture, then S4's the way to go.
Buy a note 2...no contest here. Its got nice screen, big screen, big battery, s pen and just about all s4 software features are coming.

I was also a HTC addict. But was really disappointed with their take on battery and storage. I was tempted by the s3, no s4 in January, but I wanted the big screen. Believe me every day I'm so glad I got the note 2. If I had to choose today between the s4 and the note 2 is still choose the note.
As long as you are happy with size pick the note.
Enjoy.

My words exactly!
3 UK have now discontinued the Note 2 on their website........
I've had this same question roaming around my mind for a bit now. Since T-Mo is ending contrancts if you want to end and go on your own. My wife and I are eleigible for an upgrade in June.... not free but if we get a new phone T-Mo is making changes where we would be paying about $20 a month to pay off whatever phone we choose, and that will actually still be cheaper then our plan now. I was thinking about waiting it out for the note 3 but I honestly don't have the patience for that. Went in a T-Mo store yesterday and dude told me it won't be until November most likely until the Note 3 get dropped. I can't wait that long..... I'm getting the Note 2 over S4 and probably sell it in September or October and use that money to get the Note 3.
Notes are big, almost too big but from what I have read peeps love them. Probably take some time to get used to them but I'll learn
Yeah, the size was initially scaring me too, but I got used to it real quick and now would definately miss the screen estate on a smaller device.
Actually the S4 felt like a small toy when I tried it in a shop (also due to low weight).
I admit that it's slightly (again, slightly - and I've not got the biggest of hands either) awkward to hold at times, but the positives by far outweigh the cons for me. I'm a big time reader (mostly comics ) and watch movies on my device. My hands get tired like hell while using tablets and my eyes hurt while using the tiny sized devices - Note II hits the sweet spot for me And I don't have to camp near a recharge socket either.
Bought a s4 for my wife yesterday and played with for 30 min.
Just 1 thing: note2 is better believe me BUT s4 has a good camera tbh xD

I do not love intermediate solutions, so I have the Note II to be complete everytime, but I need a small phone in my pocket, to be available, it is not possible with S4, S4 and Note II, so I have the Acer Liquid Gallant, not expensive and with acceptable performances for me...
Two is better than one, Note II, waiting for Note 3...
Note 2 no doubt.

I'm currently with Sprint using an Evo 4G LTE. It's nice, but I'm getting the "is the grass greener on the other side" feeling. The Note II is still a powerhouse under today's standards. I use my phone a lot and I think going from a dual core/1gb device to a quad-core 2gb device would really ease my problems. However, I have some reserves being that the Note 3 is right around the corner. But seeing that Note 2's are hovering around $350 on the low end, I figure I'd only be out $150ish rather than when the Note 3 drops later this year, my contract isn't up until February and if Sprint doesn't let me upgrade early and have to pay a fee, I'd probably fork up over $400ish. Plus I'd have to sign a new contract and I'm having doubts LTE will show up in our area any time soon which means I might switch carriers down the road depending on my situation.
I don't mind flashing, but figure I'd ask the Note II community your thoughts since you guys (and gals) have the experience.

I waited to update my 2 OG epic 4g's for 2 note 2's. & while I'm glad I did, I would recommend for you however to wait on pulling the trigger on this just yet. Since the GN3 is right around the corner & I would guess it's going to be the first 8 core phone in the US, it'll have the flexOLED, big ass GPU, 3gigs of ram, this is the droid we've all been looking for...
:victory:

Unless you're really having issues with the phone or something, I would just wait if you can. One thing that recently has shown us, there will always be something newer and better around the corner. Thus, I'm a big proponent of does the device fit my needs philosophy. The subsidy is build into all out phone service plans, so when you're contract is up, that's the best time to consider a new device.
As for the GN3, I haven't totally kept up on it, since my contract isn't up till 2014. But It's not going to have 8-core CPU like we think of with PCs. It's going to be two quad-core chips, which is will only use the second quad-cores when needed to give better battery life. I think the flex screen is still more rumor at this point.
If you wait, the GN3 will have been out for a months, so it'll will have been rooted by the point. You may have a better idea when LTE will come into your area.
Personally, I like the GN2. The screen size is a big plus for me. It's nice not to have to constantly zoom. I find all touch virtual keyboards suck. It has good performance for the apps that are out there. Some apps are quirks and some you have to side load for various reasons. I don't find the size an issue and only took a few days to get use to. Yes, it's not as portable as your previous phone, but it's not by much really.
Ultimately, given the costs you discussed, I don't know if I would make the switch at this point, especially if you're considering switching carriers. Sounds to me you need to research more on your available carriers to see what will fits your needs the best and costs. Considering now that there are next to no carrier exclusive phones, phones are becoming secondary.

Hey man, I'm 5'6"-5'7" (depending on the convenience store I'm walking out of) and my hands are the same size as yours. They're not small but not large either. Most things are fine with the GN2 but sometimes lefty has to make an appearance. Best phone I've ever had though.
I would hold out a few more months and get the Note 3
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
If your going for off contract and can snag a Note 2 for around 300$ - 350$ then I would go for the Note 2. Few months later when the 3s drop you can sale your note 2 for a couple bills and upgrade then if you want.
As far as size. It took me a day to get used to it and now other phones feel to small.

I came from the Evo LTE myself(still have 2 Evo LTE I need to put on ebay, 1 black that I pre-ordered and 1 white I bought at retail price when it was released). I had the Evo 3D(still have, also need to put on ebay) and the OG Evo too. I've bought nothing but HTC for about 6-7 years, even back to the WinMo days. Last Samsung I owned was the i760(crap, lol). I'm very happy with the Note 2, though I didn't have any issues with the Evo LTE, just wanted the Note 2. I can upgrade on January 1st 2014. The Note 3 should release around that time, if sooner and I can't wait then I guess I'll pay retail for it too. I love the Note 2, but you just have to decide for yourself and consider your finances. If you can afford a Note 2 an then upgrade to the Note 3 when it's released, then go for it, you'll love it!!!

I say stick it out with the Evo LTE. I'm currently stuck with my sisters Evo after my niece broke my screen on my Note. Although the Note 2 is a quad I feel the dualcore on this is a bit more responsive. You can even notice the difference when comparing the Note 2 to the GS3 which has the same chip. Touchwiz is a bit smoother on the S3. Wait for the Note 3, that'll be the one to upgrade to.
Edit: I'm actually impressed with this phone. Battery life is decent and it puts up a fight without it even being rooted. I do miss my massive screen though

Hello guys, i know this is more of a question type thread, but i just need to know this. Should i get this phone? i can get it for free on a £21 a month contract, is it still very fast and snappy? also, is the screen good? i would appreciate your feedback! thank you!
No one can really answer that question for you.
However, imo its still fast, snappy and I love the screen. I thought I would get the note 3 but it hasn't done enough to woo me.
I might be tempted to look at the lg g2 if I had no phone. But I do so I won't.
I hope that helps in some way.

I'd say the Note 2 is worth getting if your budget doesn't allow for a newer, fancier handset. How long is the contract? If it's 24 months then you might want to look at a slightly newer one, or consider selling the Note 2 half-way into the contract. I got the Galaxy S2 on a 2 year contract 2 years ago (the contract ended yesterday - I'm finally free!), but unlocked it and sold it about 14 months into the contract and bought the Note 2 outright. The Note 2 has a nice size, a better than average screen and commendable internal hardware.

Thank you! It is a 24 month contract, I was considering the nexus 5 but it is the same as my nexus 7 in design and software, so I will most likely go for the note 2. Or, I could wait till the end of my current contract and get a better phone cheaper on upgrade because at the moment I am paying £90 to cancel my current contract. Is it still worth getting the note 2 when it runs out in June?

It depends on the price of the Note 2 vs the Nexus 5. It seems to me that the Nexus 5 would be a better value upgrade than the Note 2, because it is much newer and overall the hardware is better (1080p screen, 2.3 Ghz Krait CPU etc). Over here in Australia, the price of a brand new Nexus 5 is about the same as a second hand Note 2 so if I had a choice of either phone now, I'd pick the Nexus 5 over the Note 2.
I really think the GN2 is worth it... As far as price goes it is definitely cheaper than any of the new handsets out... As far as screen goes it is very well off when it comes to quality, yes it isn't premier in comparison but any noticeable difference is subtle at most... As far as battery life one could easily argue that the GN2 is still the best... As far as firmware upgrades (if you decide to go custom) the GN2 is about as good as it gets... Already have a flashable 4.4 thanks to OmniRom (although not stable enough to use as a daily driver it is worth mentioning to show the speed of development with the device)... As far as speed goes... There really isn't anything better than the quad core functionality of the GN2. Even though some device offer octo-core processors they really don't use more than 4 at any one time and so speeds are barely noticeable at best... Ultimately the GN2, IMO was a head of its time and still has at least 2 years of fully reliable, upgradable usage left

Agree with everything that Phx said.
I'm one year in to my 2 year contract with the Note 2 and it's the first phone I've ever owned that I haven't been desperate to sell mid-contract.
It's very very fast, zero lag, great screen and fantastic battery life. 4.3 OTA update is due very soon with 4.4 already in development so you should have no worries about updates.
The Note 2 was way ahead of its time. The only thing it lacks compares to recent handsets is 1080p resolution, but on a phone screen the difference is barely noticeable.
Thank you guys, this has really helped, I have decided to wait until June and then get the GN2 then, i think it will probably be cheaper then anyway, also, what does IMO mean?
p.s I used my friends note 2 that he just got and it is very speedy and the screen looks very good. I am coming from a samsung galaxy ace, so anything would be better!

IMO = In My Opinion... I would also keep an eye out for Black Friday/Holiday sales (Xmas and New Years) as you might get a better deal during those time frames... Also check consistently as I was able to nab 3 Nexus 4s for 50 bucks a pop in March (online only) ---
---will add that though the Note 2 will always seem bulky to your peers... After 2 weeks you really grow accustomed to its size and will look at almost every other phone as tiny and hardly usable

Coming from a Galaxy Ace, the Note 2 would be a great upgrade. Personally, I've grown to prefer AOSP over Touchwiz - maybe that's why I'd prefer the Nexus 5 over the Note 2. But that's if I didn't have either phone right now; I love the Note 2 on AOSP-based firmware. It beats the Nexus 5 just with its expandable storage alone!
As you like aosp it is worth mentioning the note 2 had a good selection of custom roms, aosp, aokp, stock and hybrid. Omni rom had just released an (almost) stable kit kat 4.4 rom. Thus offering a lot of what the nexus 5 offers

I'm using RootBox v4.2 (as seen in my signature) and I love the flashy window animations and scroll effects. It's still based on 4.2.2 though - because 4.3 uses TRIM, it needs a full wipe so I haven't really been bothered to look for another ROM.
Do you know any 4.3/4.4 ROMs that have rather fancy animations?
