Phone dropping signal after 4.2.2 radio update VZW - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Ever since I flashed the 4.2.2 radio for my VZW Galaxy Nexus I have been having signal drops. I thought flashing the old radios back would work but it didnt. I tried 4.0.4 and 4.1.1.
My cell reception and 3g or 4g data will shut off intermittently throughout the day. It lasts for about a minute and then I'm back to normal. I can't send text during this period but I have still never had a call dropped.
Does anyone know what the problem could be? I have tried a variety of ROM/radio/kernel combinations and nothing helps. Like I said, it began when I flashed the 4.2.2 radios and the problem persists through other radios. I never had a reception problem where I live before I flashed the JB radios.

I'm wondering if I flashed the radios wrong. Like I said I've tried the exact same radios that I was on before and I'm still getting frequent signal drops

Have you tried restoring one of your back ups that not 4.2?

I've been having this exact same thing. I even went to the stock rooted VZW 4.2.2 Rom and tried to reflash the new radios with no luck. I am going to try and see if I have an old update that is prior to the 4.2.2 radio update but I usually clear out old backups to save memory. I'll let you know if it works when I get home. I am at the point of unrooting the phone and going to a straight vzw 4.2.2 stock to see if that will fix my issue. I loose calls all the time and can berely get texts out in places I know I used to have great service. I'll keep you posted. I did find a good post with all the radios but I am confused on finding the correct MD5Sum even after using root explorer and having it calculate it for me. The MD5Sum that comes up doesn't match any of the ones he was giving for the update versions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1890585
maybe that will help you?
Update:
I Went back to the last backup i had in early February. I'm pretty sure it was before I installed the new radios. That didn't help. I went back to stock 4.1.1 (JRO03O) and installed the VZW 4.2.2 update unrooted to see if I could just get back to having my signal good and then reroot. My signal is still dropping out and pretty low in areas I used to have great signal. I don't know, maybe I messed up the harware when I installed the radios but even being stock unrooted with the VZW software has not helped me. Not sure what to do from here. Let me know if you figure something out.

I'm having this same issue. Flashed the 4.2.2 from Google the other day. I'm rooted and have the tethering mod and a battery meter mod.
I was thinking about flashing an older radio and see how that is.
Otherwise this new build is awesome, I'm glad I decided to try stock again.

Did you ever get the issue resolved with the radios? My signal is still horrible after installing the VZW 4.2 update unrooted.

I've just absolutely had it with the LTE nexus's radio.

I'm so completely frustrated by this phone.
I live in Houston, we've had excellent LTE for a while now. I had a thunderbolt for a long time that performed flawlessly on LTE.
Since day one, across multiple roms, multiple radios, and more wipes than I can count, this phone has been absolutely pathetic with regards to radio performance.
I'm CONSTANTLY losing 4G, or having 4G and being stuck with gray (non google connected) bars. I'm always singing out of Gtalk, not having texts go through.
The phone burns a hole in pocket (figuratively) sometimes when it drops to 3G.
What should I do? Do i need to get a new phone? Anyone else massively disappointed with the Gnex data connection?
GSM ftw.

You shouldn't have, i use google voice which requires a data connection to google's servers.

Howcome? Same reasons?
the connection are fine over here in boston, i only think i dont like my GN is that i need to charge it 4 times per day.
GSM touters aside,
Have u tried flashing one of the custom radio packages or even one of the radio hybrids?
i had some wifi-mobile data handoff issues with the 4.0.2 radios, but the 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 have been stellar. digs out 4g almost everywhere and whatever the connection, no heat or handoff issues.
i also came from a thunderbolt. and the only place i have issues is when i am in a building pretty far away from windows. at work, where i had an OK 4gLTE connection on my thunderbolt, i have a 50/50 connection on my nexus (probably 80% 4g with thunderbolt)
other than that, as long as i am close to a window, or outside i get as good a connection as my thunderbolt did. you may have a bad SIM card, or a bad radio in general. i would try to get it replaced.

Yes I have, i've use 4.0.2, 4.0.3, the latest "hybrid."
They all have the same issues across the roms.
Thanks though
I live in Arizona and when in Phoenix I have no issues with 4G signal. Samsung is notorious for bad attenna designs. You may have a bad attenna, nit properly wired, or defective radio. I would recommend having Verizon replace it.

No Network Signal After Flash to 4.1 on Verizon Galaxy Nexus

Was this an OTA uprade? If you did an manual upgrade, you should make a backup before going forward.
Are you sure you used the correct ROM? Cross-flashing between a Toro/Maguro/Toro+ will often have the phone but up but with the radios not working
did you check your apn?
I just bought this phone on Thursday and the bestbuy rep had the same problem on two different phones and had to call the Verizon help desk. She managed to get it working and of course my signal went in and out as soon as I left the parking lot. I went home and immediately rooted and flashed 4.1 and had the same issue. I was on the phone with tech support and they couldn't find the problem.
I then did a quick search online and found that this is a common issue. The problem is that when updating to 4.0.4 the galaxy nexus has a hard time with the 4g connection. It then drops to 3g and then it realizes 4g is available and switches back just to start this never ending cycle. This causes a signal to be held for seconds at a time before dropping completely until it switches to the other.
The temp fix is to disable LTE and run your phone on CDMA full time. This worked for me and I have constant signal everywhere. Eventually I know a patch will arrive so I'm content with 3g for the time being.
What puzzles me is how come this doesn't happen to everyone? Its a big enough issue that I found the solution within 3min of searching for a fix but not big enough for Verizon to be aware of.

I have the same issue. it burns your battery as well by switching back and forth. I used to leave my nexus uncharged at night and the sleep mode would allow it to only lose a a few percentages but now if i leave 4g on with 50 percent battery.. Its almost alway dead when I wake up
Sad to say I have the same experience
The story told by mclaughlin47 is almost exactly what happened with me. Even rooted and running BAMF Paradigm 2.1, I still have the same problem. If anyone knows of a way to fix this, please let us know.
I can't believe Verizon isn't aware of this problem. I actually had better battery life and signal with my Thunderbolt running Vicious ROM. I may just be returning mine if I don't hear of a solution soon.
Thanks for any help, cause this is ridiculous!
I am rooted now, but even on stock ICS I was getting a problem where my radios just die. Requires a reboot to fix. But when I was seeing it, they always looked fine. You don't know they died until you try to use data or make a call.

I saw the same issue with ics and jb roms. Tried several radios but always dropped data and voice when using 4g. From what I've been reading, it's a hardware defect.
Mine also works great and stays connected all the time when I leave it in cdma mode. Went back to my rezound since 3g mode there at least still let's me use data while talking on the phone. I like showering in as much radiation as I can

Reflash the radio and the cdma radio. Samsung and Verizon Wireless both claim that hardware defects are not known issues.
Which hardware revision do you have? (looks on the label on the back should be 11.11, 11.12, or 12.0.)
i have 12.01
will try reflashing the latest radios

Have the same exact issue...just upgraded to a jelly bean Rom and my data drops completely and I barely have a signal, did a super wipe (radio-rom-Gnapps)...and went to my old rom of ICS and I still have the same problem...but for the most part I barely have any type of signal and calls are dropping, called Verizon and they told me something about a switch, and that there is no problem in ur area....I just called last night, I'm gonna call back today...wish there was a solution ...also tried that 3G switch I just read earlier and I still have a poor signal
Any updates? I'm having the same problem
Hi,
I'm having the same issue. I've had my Nexus for about a month now and have had nothing but horrible signal issues, while my old Droid 2 gets fantastic signal.
I'm using the latest Bugless Beast 4.1.1 with the latest radios that were released today.
People have mentioned it being a hardware defect. I'm assuming I should just go back to stock ICS and go into Verizon and exchange it for a different Nexus?
It may very well be a hardware problem, but my thought was a SIM card problem for the reason that rebooting often does not solve the problem for me. I have a passcode on my SIM card, so if my phone doesn't ask me to enter the code then I can assume it doesn't see the card. This often happens when I encounter the loss of data problem and reboot, and I usually have to remove the SIM card and fiddle with it a bit and put it back in and then it reconnects.
So I went to the Verizon store to try and swap my SIM card and they wouldn't give me a new card, saying that it's a known software issue that Samsung has already attempted to fix twice and they are working on another OTA update. I obviously made a ruckus about how I'm paying for service I can't access and I want a different device, blah, blah, blah. Basically he was incredibly unhelpful.
I've been on ICS AOKP and recently switched over the CM10 JB and that's when the problems started for me, but I switched because some type of battery issue (it lasted about 3 hours for a few days) caused my phone to reset itself and erase everything so it seemed like a good time to upgrade. So I may have unique hardware issues going on but according to vzw it is software-based. I'm not sure if this is something that can/will be addressed in a new nightly if that's the case.
PEOPLE, IT'S NOT A HARDWARE PROBLEM! IT'S SIMPLY A RADIO.IMG PROBLEM! A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO IS ON ICS, BUT FLASHED LATEST RADIO ARE SUFFERING FROM THIS!
What you can do is just flash to a older radio image. Not that hard. Will this stop the OTA? Probably, but you can either flash the latest version back or just manually flash it.
Have a good day.
I got mine the first week of Aug at Best Buy. The first one I got had all the problems described above. Radios dropping out and dropping every call I made. I returned it the next day, and the sales guy told me he was 100% sure it wasn't the phone. I asked him to exchange the phone and the card because I couldn't use a phone that couldn't make calls. He did the exchange, and the second phone was actually worse. Most of the time, I could not even make a call. So, the next day I took that one back. They gave me a third one that worked great for a week, then I started getting a no SIM card error message. The phone would reboot and work again for about 3 hours, then repeat error message. I took the card out, wiped down all the contacts with a soft cloth, and I have had no problems since. Great reception, no dropped calls. Great phone. I don't know if it is hardware or software, but I would keep returning the phone until you get one that works!
Once again, what is the point of having a phone that can't make calls.

Radios Verizon Galaxy Nexus

I updated to jellybean on my VZW nexus and have been dropping my signal a bunch randomly. I just got a refurbished phone from verizon and I flashed it first thing so I don't know if it is a problem with the phone or the stock AOKP radios I have installed. I was wondering if anyone knew if I can use the radios from 4.0.4 on jellybean or not?

I don't know the answer to your question, however...
Got my wife a free Galaxy Nexus from Best Buy last week (verizon)... and instantly had problems w/ the 4g. After a ridiculous period of time at Best Buy to get the phone activated (they tried multiple SIM cars) and her contacts downloaded, we finally left being assured that the 4g problems were due to the activation process, and were told to give it a day or two. I was skeptical.
So we flipped off the LTE/CDMA mode, and went just to CDMA and used 3g for a few days. Called Verizon, they refreshed the network / cleared out the lines (whatever that means), and still no 4g. Every time we'd turn on 4g mode, it would connect, then drop moments later. When it dropped, it also dropped the phone line. After a week, my wife had finally worn me down. I conceded to her that a very very very very remote possibility had occurred, and we had gotten 'a bad phone'. Dear lord, did I want her to go to Best Buy w/o me. But i got suckered (she's pregnant).
So after another 2 hours at Best Buy, a new phone, and a new SIM card... we walked out w/ the same problem as before. Apparently, there's something going on w/ Verizon's latest software version ... our only option is to use 3g for a bit. I called Verizon to try and get some free money towards my bill out of them, and the customer support rep told me my best option at this point was to return the phone and choose a different device. Talk about horrible support.
So now i've come here to pretty much try what i think you'er aiming for... maybe by going to CM9 or CM10, her phone will be able to keep a constant 4g connection... only time will tell.

There is no such thing as "stock AOKP radios." The baseband version is independent of the ROM, so whatever baseband you had after flashing was the exact same one you had prior. The signal drops are a common issue and could be attributable to the fact that there are no JB basebands released for the i515 as of yet.
The issue is with your device and not the radio's or the OS version you are on. Nothing you do will fix it or make the issue disappear. There are good GNEX's out there that do not have the radio problems, it took me three tries to get one.
Don't believe anything else you hear about fixing what you have. It is all BS.
Occam's Razor is applicable here. When the problem is persistent on 4.1.1 and is not present after reverting to 4.0.4, it's a software issue. That's not discounting the ones put there with hardware issues, but the fact of the matter is that signal problems are to be expected for vzw users running JB. We have updated binaries, but until a new baseband drops for the i515, it's not going to play especially well with JB. Such is the price for us early adopters.

I've seen two types of issues on the gnex.
1) 4g drops out and either drops to 3g or 1x for a period of time, in which it reconnects to 3g/4g shortly after. This seems to be a once in a while type issue. This seems to be more radio related.
2) 4g drops and your phone drops signal, period, for that time and then reconnects quickly. Easiest way to tell if its doing that is to check the battery stats graph and look for red slivers in your data connection. This issue from what I've seen is more hardware and I'd suggest replacing the device within your 14 days.

The ongoing theme is it's a great phone other than noisy calls, occasional drops, data signal/connection issues, and fragile glass.
And we're partly to blame. Short life cycles and youthful koolaid drinking consumers enable phone manufacturers to continue to build with a style over function mentality.

My 3rd replacement says otherwise. I have been on JB for 3 weeks now with this device and have not had any issues with 4G.
If every LTE GNEX had the same issue on JB I would agree with you but that is not the case. I wouldn't believe it either until I finally received a perfectly working GNEX. Always thought it was the software but I was proven wrong.

Go here and get the FC04/FC05 radios.
Radios are independent of the ROM, so you can install any radio you want on any ROM. FC04/FC05 are the latest basebands.

His device should already have these radios if he recently received it.
My suggestion is do not play games with radio swapping, keep excahging until you get one that works.
Also, why not restore to ICS first and see that it is your phone and not the software.

Dropped calls running AOKP

I'm wondering if this is a ROM problem or problem with my local Verizon service.
I'm getting very frequent dropped calls. In the Seattle area we have 4g service, I'm running AOKP Toro jb milestone 1.
Service drops to 0 bars, then after several seconds, comes back. Generally to show 3 bars of 4G service.
I was contemplating going back to stock to see if the problem is the same. But I thought I'd post here first to see if it may be a ROM problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks, RWM
I would use the new radios FG02. This might help. Helps with spotty transitions of 4G lte to 3G.

Mods please move this thread to general
If 4g drops to no signal and then comes back it could be hardware related. If you have the latest radios on your phone and this still happens you may need to get a replacement phone. If you take it to Verizon they'll probably try to swap the SIM first.
To return to Verizon do you think I should go back to stock first?

I would to be safe. If you're returning it, use the factory image and relock the bootloader.
I've had this issue too but only on AOKP milestone 1...dunno what it is. I've noticed when it happens "system ui" fails which has also happened when using the phone.
I haven't dropped any calls, but I get data drops every now and then.

I have this same issue, it only happens when I have good signal, when my signal is weak it's fine, it's only when I have strong signal or 4g, I assume it's a hardware issue at least for myself, because I haven't noticed a difference with different roms

Welcome to the Android Community. For sure you will find the answer to all your questions regarding android in these forums. With that said, make you read before you post. BTW your device is deffective- return it until you get a good one. It took me 5 times. Talk to Tech Support Level 2 when you call Verizon no one else.
Hey was wondering if you ever figured out this issue, im having the same problems only mine drops the call every 30 exactly. If i use the phone for say 28 minutes then the next call will drop in 2 min to finish out the original 30. I have been having this problem for awhile but was never this predictable, gone through many different radios, roms, eery did a factory wipe with a full wipe of everything and reinstalled xenonHD rom build number JOP40G. Please any help would be awesome. Thanks Also in the seattle area.

Hi, I am running AOKP JB 4.2 milestone 2 on my Galaxy Nexus and experiencing the same problem. My calls dropped after some time between 5 an 30 minutes with "Out of area service" alert. I am from the Czech Republic using Vodafone. I tried getRIL to install matching RIL (baseband i9250XXKK1), but this did not help. Before this I was running old AOKP ICS 4.0 without any problem. Does anyone have an idea, how to solve this problem?
Thank you very much.

SOLUTION: I finally found out a solution for my problem. I reflashed radio firmware to the new version (i9250XXLJ1) and installed matching RIL using GetRIL. Now everything works without any problem.

Upgraded to 4.2.2 now really bad signal

Is anyone having signal issues with 4.2.2? I had a samsung skyrocket before this galaxy nexus and my signal was always good like -85dbm with this nexus in the same location I get -103 and no signal at all. If anyone can help with this please pm me. I'd be willing to shoot you a couple bucks thru paypal for the help. The phone does this all over the place, in the house and even outside and it is causing me some major battery drain.
I check cell stand bye in the battery settings and it shows 32% with no signal with the phone being on for 7 hours. I am missing all kinds of texts and calls, texts going thru very slowly sometimes not at all. I like the stock rom but if I have to go with something else I will. The phone is unlocked rooted with CWM and is being used on t mobile.
In the same place as the skyrocket this phone is getting really bad signal if any at all. Thanks in advance
Running the XXLJ1 radio in northeast ohio sorry forgot to add that
Try different radio?

Flash in custom recovery.
What radio should I go with? There is a boat load of them on there
Any help????
Best way is trial and error.

I've seen in that list a lot of them are listed as european, australian, canadian nd north america. I am still having zero to 1 signal bar inside my house and it is tanking my battery hopefully I can get this figured out tonight
Make a backup via cwm or twrp and flash the original firmware. I assume that if the connection is still bad, your phone itself is the problem. I guess your family dont have the problem of bad signal?

The original firmware? Which one are you talking about? A link would be appreciated
I am on my fourth radio now, getting 1-2 signal bars and -103 dBm, better then it was but not what it should be
I am inclined to think that it really is this phone. I will try just about anything tho to see if I can fix it to where I am getting good signal tho. Just really crazy how the Skyrocket would get almost full bars and -83 dBm in the same spot as this GNexus

This are the factory images of google. Called Stock Image/Firmware. Did you root your phone or do you use a custom rom?

The phone is rooted and unlocked with CWM installed on it. I am using the stock 4.2.2 rom on it right now. I have never used fastboot before. Can I flash the stock firmware via CWM or does it have to be done via fastboot?
I have the stock 4.2.2 zip file on my phone still from when I upgraded it. Should I just try to flash that again and see if it fixes it?
Calm down mate First of all do a full backup, push it to your pc just to be sure!
Then download the toolkit ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392310) and read the topic(!) and follow the instructions to flash the latest firmware. At the moment i dont know if you have to wipe data / factory reset your phone if you want to flash the original image via the toolkit.

... or read the sticky at the top of this forum section and do it manually via fastboot.

I did it via the toolkit and still the same crap signal inside my house. Outside the signal is fine but in my house its still just as bad as before
Flashed another radio via CWM this time I get up to 2 signal bars inside but I still get -103dBm to -105dBm had a bunch of texts not go thru at all today because of this signal. It really is crazy how much of a difference there can be with signal strength between phones
Idk what is going on I called t mobile last night and complained about my signal, the phone cut off numerous times. Woke up today had **** signal, drove around to numerous corner store cell phone shops looking for a good condition droid x to trade and pocket some cash so I can switch to page plus but no one had a droid x. I got home from work at 11 and since then I have had signal between -89 to -95 3-4 bars. Now I have great signal. T mobile said there wasn't any outage or complaints in my area at all when I called last night. Funny how I had no signal here for almost 2 weeks then out of no where my signal is better then ever.
I was really going to get rid of this phone today and go to page plus. I even burned up a quarter tank of gas trying to find a phone for page plus. Guess I'll see how long this lasts, honestly I don't have my hopes up but it would be nice if this nexus keeps it up. Thanks for the help I appreciate it
Might not be your phone..
I understand this thread is for the Galaxy Nexus, but the update caused a similar issue with my Nexus 4.
I live in a place that doesnt have the greatest signal, yet the phone worked perfectly before I updated to 4.2.2. I would always get around -90db and never had calls cutout. Immediately after updating to 4.2.2, I'm getting -100 to nothing in the same place, and calls are constantly fading/dropping/missing.
Something in the 4.2.2 update definitely F'd up my Nexus 4.
