[HOW-TO] Make the CRT Effect smooth - Nexus 4 Themes and Apps

CRT off effect was introduced in the Android 2.3 branch and is one of the most loved feature of Android.
The effect is very smooth in 4.1.2 (Jellybean). The 4.2.x update screws the effect making it very fast to be enjoyable and takes a second or near about to respond.
Fortunately, after searching previous Nexus devices threads and testing various .prop additions, the one below works wonders.
Makes it smooth as the 4.1.x effect.
Before instructions, please make a backup of your current ROM and the build.prop file
Instructions :
Root required to do this.
1. Download any Root explorer from the Play Store, preferably https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedsoftware.explorer
2. Open it, grant SU access and navigate to /system.
3. Navigate to build.prop and long press and click 'Open in Text Editor'.
4. Add this line "debug.sf.electron_frames=1".
Of course without the " " marks
5. Save and Exit.
6. Reboot your device and Voila.
Enjoy your smooth CRT off effect.
Thank you.
I'm on CM10.1 by the way.

Yes, the update will fail due to the file not being original.

What I would actually like it's a way to turn off CRT. Guess I'm one of the oddballs. I can't find a setting in PA v3.10 to turn it off. Anyone got a tip on this.

Lol no, this fix is about making it smooth and reproducing actual CRT off effect like in previous Android builds.
Unfortunately, setting animations to off worked in 4.1.x builds. It no longer works in 4.2.x builds.
Still, i'll look into policy.jar file to completely shut it off.

That would be awesome! It's not a huge deal. PA is an awesome stable rom. But it would be nice though..

To turn off CRT, you have to Reboot AFTER turning transition animations to 0 or off

BIG THANKS TO MOLESARECOMING FOR ALLOWING ME TO PORT THIS TO THE NS4G
ORIGINAL THREAD FOUND HERE
PER-APP-DPI/LAYOUT.
This is not tablet mode! Hybrid engine allows you to target apps individually. You get to pick their actual layouts which can tranform content drastically. Keep in mind, this has nothing to do with build.prop hacks or DPI changes. We list all layouts an app brings, you choose one, its as easy as that. It does not matter if your device runs itself in Phone-, Phablet or Tablet-UI, your apps will always look as you like. On top of that you can scale apps, to fit your screen, that way you can even bring full fledged tablet apps and make them run perfectly. Nothing will break, nothing will shrink, your market will be fine. Additionally we have rewritten many parts of the android framework and fixed countless of AOSP bugs to make way for these modifications - our "tablet mode" runs better on a phone than on a real tablet, that is guaranteed.

PER-APP-COLOR,
Paranoidandroids newest invention. Define apps in your regular hybrid panel. See your phone fade into the color definition of your current app, press home or go elsewhere and it fades back. Create as many combinations you like, you can even dabble with opacity. This feature is made possible by our hybrid engine, which is unique to this rom.
HOW TO INSTALL.
download rom
download gapps (skip if you have gapps)
place rom and gapps on root of sd
reboot into recovery
choose "install zip from sd"
choose paranoid-xxx-ns4g.zip and install
repeat for gapps
fix permissions
reboot
enjoy

TROUBLE?.
If you have an issue and you want to call our attention, here's what you do:
Try everything you can, find solutions for yourself. Wipe caches, revert all your settings you have made, go back to your stock Kernel, factory reset if you have to or reflash the rom. Assume that the issue is on your side and try your best to isolate it.
Search this thread and Cyanogenmods aswell (its our base) for possible reoccurences of your issue and hopefully solutions that may have come up.
If you think the issue is important enough that we should cease our work and look into it, post your issue, BUT ...
stay friendly, do not demand anything, do not threaten
explain your issue as precise as you can, name the exact apps and conditions that cause trouble, help us to replicate the issue right away. If we can't there's no way we can fix it and your post will simply clutter the thread
collect evidence, keep in mind this is a developer thread so even if you are not one, do us the favor and research how to record logcat. logcat is the single most important help you can give us to resolve your issue.

A boot loop? I can't explain that. The worst thing to happen is that the NavBar dissappears. But a bootloop? Hmm. You can try again, this time just try to apply the "backup" if you run into a bootloop again, I think I know what the problem is...

Did the preview in the top section change to the ones you selected after the half reboot?
Edit: I can now look at the screens and since the top section does not show the softkeys currently used, the ROM you are using is not using the normally used png files and/or you got a theme applied, that changes the Softbuttons.

Can you get a logcat? There are apps in the PlayStore for that.

Well , note that to be able to use the phone again I had to restore from backup so , when your app will be ready to use and if it will be a paid one , don't forget us
I'll try to pull a log cat

Mate , forget about logcat , it seems to work now ... only the style doesn't change , the colors I mean , no bootloop whatsoever , I didn't applied "save" ... Might be related to the ROM theme , I'm using the one default of slim ROM though.
Would be nice to add more buttons yo be themed but I think is already on your to do list
Keep on !

The colors, well that's due to the ROM probably changing them, a lot do that. But I don't know what you exactly mean by "more buttons"?

Well, that's more a thing of your ROM or Theme, and a power button is not aosp, that means the feature would probably not work on most devices.
Will release today anyway. Thank you all for the tests. I will come back to you with a present, just let me know your gmails/PlayStore accs.

[MOD] Allow any font to be used

Okay, so i have been playing around with fonts lately, and i noticed that you can "download fonts online" but when you would go into display settings to apply it, it told you "this font is not available" then why the heck would you let me download it!? xD
There are other options like iFont and such which allow you to change the font. Well i don't like using apps for something the system can do. So i modded the Settings apk to allow all fonts to be used
Just flash in recovery, download any font, and use settings apk to apply it Works perfectly. Now you get to use all those free fonts
Enjoy!
DOWNLOAD
Nice find bro.. will test it and confirm back..
Yea that is annoying. But does a modded settings apk affect anything?

The zip file is 55.61 MB lol I would rather use ifont then delete it once I change the font, but thanks for your work! Gonna give it a try on my next flash :good:

No nothing else is touched. Just the font option.

Well yeah. Go look how large the settings apk is. That's why it's 50 megs. It's one download, one flash. No messing with stupid ads and third party crap it's much better than iFont

No way! Don't flash it! definite boot loop! xD I don't think aosp supports fonts natively. Gonna have to use iFont or something similar . I use a self modded iFont apk for my tablet.

I have been using both ifont and rom toolbox to apply my font. Ifont changed most of the fonts but left some apps alone ie..browser pages. But useing romtoolbox after ifont took care of browser and everything else. Could never use just one or the other. Alone they both leave certain fonts alone, together they get everything.
I'll give this a shot, maybe this will save a few steps. Thks.

Only app I haven't seen get changed is kik. But that's only in the compose box which to me seems like an override by the app itself. As all other fonts are changed. I love having sexy text :3

Will this work on Infamous Roms, cos he adds other options to his Settings.....Cross Fingers.
So would this work on a 4.3 Rom? I ask because the only confirmed with pics is on a 4.2.2 Rom and the settings.apk in 4.3 is most likely much different than the one in 4.2.
It should work but if its a stock apk it should look stock therefore not Infamous lol

Is this updated for 4.3 stock tmobile roms? and would u mind making one for the international 4.3 rom?

I tried it. It force closes my settings. I used this on 4.2.2 and i was pretty happy with it.

Yeah. worked great on 4.2, but since I updated to Rebirth 4.3, whenever I try to flash, it says "FAILED" in big red letters.
