Remove or Kill RILD process - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey everyone. Long story short. I dropped my Galaxy Nexus in water and after trying for quite some time could not get the radio signals to work. It seems Wifi and bluetooth work fine, however it can not connect to any cell towers anymore. I have come to live with it however I still would like to use the phone for other things. Like a music player or GPS. My problem is since I have dropped it in water the battery life is terrible and i originally thought it was the battery went bad or something, but it seems that is not the case. I replaced the battery and am getting the same thing. After turning on Show CPU Usage I have a process RILD that is using up quite a bit of power. I know it has to do with cell usage, seems to be that its related to 4G. I do not care about this process and want to kill or remove it totally however everything I see that says a hard reboot will fix it, however my power button doesnt work either. I just want the process gone. Anyone have any advice? Thanks.

I am sorry I was not clear
I have tried airplane no, doesnt work. I have tried going into the build.prop and changing a few things I read in various forums to try and get that to work. I have also removed some .apk I thought might solve it, such as phone.apk, mms.apk and telephonyprovider.apk and still getting the same thing with RILD killing my battery in a matter of 3 - 4 hours from a full charge. I need a way to disable or kill this particular process

This was my thought too or even try a new sim and see if it fixes the problem with data all together. Assume the op already tried it but they didn't mention it

Sorry, but this site has some strict rules, the above being one of them. I will ask your thread to be moved. As for a tiny bit of help, did you immediately pull your battery and let your phone dry out for a few days before trying anything at all? This is paramount if you drop it in water.
good luck

[Q] Fully crashed at random? (acting like turned off) has it happend to you?

Very strange thing happened to me today, went to wake my phone up from lock screen but I pressed the power button and nothing, no wake! I knew I had lots of battery left, but thought maybe it died for some reason, plugged in charger, no response still could not turn on, even holding the button down did no change, nor opening keyboard.
I then removed the battery and re-inserted, booted up and its working fine again
What happened?!
It just happens This happens to my Desire Z every month or so, no matter what rom I use. Recently I changed the radio the latest release, but it won't help I suppose... we'll see.
It seems nobody knows why this happens, many questions are scattered around the the forum about this hang and no answer
sorry for my english
gps make this problem (+ google maps + all google maps based programs)
just turn gps switch off
when you have to use gps, turn it on, use it, turn it off, reboot
and DZ should work fine
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=69305f1c1e5f8c31&hl=en
Not sure what causes this, but it happens occasionally to me too. Maybe once a month or so... Happened earlier today. Hadn't used Google Maps nor do I have any apps that use GPS to track my location.
Happens to me all the time, in average about once every 1-2 days. I put my phone on my desk with screen off, and an hour later it does not respond to the on/off button at all. Sometimes it will reboot when I press the button for over 15 seconds, but most of the time I have to pull the battery, which is a drag since I have a silicone phone protector. I have also noticed that every once in a while, the battery will be fully discharged when it does this. This morning my phone was at 80% battery power, I used it for a minute to check mail, then put it down. 15 Minutes later it was dead, and when I pulled the battery, all I got was a little screen saying 'Please connect charger immediately'. Kinda scary.
I've seen lots of posts about this too on androidforums.com and on MoDaCo. My wife has a Samsung Galaxy Ace on Android 2.2.4 and she has the exact same problem. I haven't found a solution yet, but it seems to be software-related (since it's not limited to Desire-Z), and more specifically Android-related (as it also happened on stock phones without any third-party apps installed). I upgraded to Android 2.3.3 last week and that did not solve it.
Other suspicions I found on other fora:
Correlation between 'phone sleep' and 'WiFi going to sleep' (some people report they benefit from keeping WiFi always off unless they really need it, some people report success keeping WiFi always on; for others - like me - it does nothing or made it worse)
Correlation between phone and SD card (phone does not work properly if the SD card is not the original one, or has not been formatted on the phone)
Correlation between WiFi and SD card (people report reformatting the SD card on their device helped, after they've turned WiFi off)
I have heard people that have had their phone replaced 7 times and all 8 phones did it, some others got the problem solved with one replacement, so it seems not all devices do it.
Check out this thread: http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-ace/312084-randomly-turning-off.html
A personal observation of mine - and maybe hardware gurus can comment on it - involves the micro-USB connector. Not only is it a pain to connect (compared to mini-USB), but I have noticed that it very easily 'jitters' if there is a slight bend in the cable or if you move the phone while it's connected. The plug will then sit slightly crooked in the connector and the phone will stop charging. And actually, I'm pretty sure that the first time it 'died' on me was when this happened. Would it be possible that this triggers the event? And that the micro-USB is the common cause?
I wonder what radio all these dying phones were running? I had 12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26 , now I'm running latest radio, but only a few months will tell if that helped or not...
Update: it's been about a week now since I've disabled GPS and I haven't had a single SOD since! Seems that at least in my case GPS was the culprit, like others on here already suggested. Can anyone else confirm?

and notice how many times you phone hangs in this too weeks
Hello,
i have the same issue with my Desire Z. Many people say its GPS related, i think so, too.
I never hat issues with GPS while navigate. But because the issue is probably caused bei GPS, i have a idea.
I use the wipe efs-data using for GPS from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1028405
I never had freezes since this. Maybe it helps everyone. Please try and give feedback. Thanks.
Yesterday my Desire Z did exactly that. For the first time. First I thought the battery would be dead, but connection it to the charger didn't even make the orange LED turn on. So only taking out the battery and re-inserting it brought my phone back to life.
I had WiFi turned ON and GPS NOT turned OFF (though no Maps or anything running, so there was no satellite icon in the status bar the last time I had used it).
I will keep watching it, if GPS OFF or an EFS-WIPE might help. But right now it has crashed the first time in about two weeks, so it will be hard for me to tell any improvement before at least a month has passed. ;-)
Tronar
Addendum: after finishing this post, I went downstairs to pick up my phone. And it was dead again! Seems to be happening more often at the moment, than I thought. So I'm going to do an EFS-WIPE now.

google maps is running still in background (also when You try to kill it with taskkiller it will stand up) and use (or try to use) gps for example for location for weather forecast. it can happen that the gps icon cam in notifications bar only a few seconds so You can't see it
it is possible that another apk use (or try to use) gps to get Your location, geotagging photos or so.
just have always gps off (when you haven't to use it and reboot after using) it helps
Bad News, wiping efs-data did not resolve the SOD . Yesterday it happens again.
My gf has the Desire Z and loves the phone - cept for this random issue of her phone freezing on standby. After a bit of screwing around I found out it is definitely related to the GPS module. Whether it's a hardware or memory leak it doesn't matter to her. You can crash her phone anytime by simply using the GPS and any software (she likes google maps / navigation) when she's done whether she turns off the gps or not, makes no difference - within a few hours at the most - it'll crash every time.
The short version, after using your GPS you'll have to restart your phone and you'll never have it crash again.

Search Menu keeps popping up randomly

I dont know if this is a problem with my phone or the ROM. This seems to happen intermittently and I dont know what to do about it. It drives me crazy especially when I am trying to text or do anything. Sometimes and it seems more frequent lately, when I unlock my phone and go to text or send an email and I am in the middle of typing.... all of a sudden, the search menu pops up repeatedly. Once this happens I stop touching the screen completely and it just keeps popping up and down continuously like I am pressing the search button at the bottom of my screen. It will do this for several minutes, sometimes longer. Then it goes away and I dont see it again for days. But it keeps happening.
Has anyone else experienced this kind of problem?
Things I have tried with no success... 1. check for debris stuck on the screen near the search button. 2. dirty screen. 3 replaced screen protector. 4. removed screen protector. 5. removed phone protector (otterbox) completely, no screen protector either, just phone.
None of these have stopped this menu popping problem. Please help? Should I just take this phone back and try and get a replacement? I am sure that if I do that, the tech wont be able to duplicate the problem. UUGHH!!
UPDATE: Found this thread about the same thing and, yes, it looks like low signal and ICS combo on 3G could be the culprit.

First off, it sounds like you have a messy situation with your phone pooping often. Kidding aside, I am having the same issue. I really thought it was faulty touch sensors. I am currently using AKOP build 7/20 and the issue seems to sporadically pop up. I am glad I am not the only one

Sprint is literally MADE of these phones.
They have so many that they're pushing them to Boost mobile.
Politely demand a replacement, insist that the issue is covered.
You will have no problem getting what you need.

I called the Sprint store where I bought the phone and asked them about it and they said they were having a lot of similar issues since the latest OTA update. However, I told them mine has been doing it months before the OTA update, which is true. She suggested I bring it in nad have the tech look at it. So I will probably do that but should I put the OS back to stock first?

If you're running a safe recovery such as agat's, etc, then I believe a simple factory reset would suffice.
I'm somewhat new to the android os, so my statement above may need verified.
But I'm no greenhorn when it comes to getting these phones replaced: this is my fourth one!
The safest bet (and what I would do) is to ODIN back to ff18 stock. Or el29 even. Whatever.
Good luck! That button issue would be unbearable for me!

edit:i do believe the long-press of the 'menu' button brings up the new ICS search feature. long press of the 'search' button brings up the google voice search on my phone.

its not random..its when your in a low signal area.
I too thought it was faulty hardware buttons, but there was a thread here somewhere that mentioned it happens when in low signal area that caused the "menu" button to be pushed. this has been happening on my phone and others before ICS OTA.
not sure why its been happening, nor do i know of a fix

I am certainly in a low signal area. In fact, my signal is almost non-existant. What I dont understand is why roaming doesnt kick in and use whatever signal is available. I know that AT&T has signal boosters in my building and the signal is very strong. Maybe the signal issue is causing the problem but I have not seen that thread. I will do some searching and if I find it I will post here.
Same problem with my phone. Just got back from vacation, 10hr drive both ways using the phone for navigation there and back home, so the phone was in my line of sight the whole time. It always did it in low signal or slow data areas, or when data roaming kicked in. I have poor reception at the house and it starts as soon as I turn off the wifi.
Local sprint store is ordering me new phone. I'm running stock EL29..

So if you are running stock EL29 then that would rule out ICS as part of the problem. We are left with low signal on 3G. I have been watching closely over the past day and it only happens on my phone when low/no signal and no wifi. If I am connected to wifi then it doesnt do it. I am sure if I put my phone in airplane mode it wouldnt do it either. I will test that today.
New phone (like new replacement), no more problems.

Some phone issues

Every first time (locking phone to redo it also happens) that I put in my pattern unlock, it always stop by itself before I'm done putting in the pattern. I am rooted but i'm not using a custom rom.
This could be a tmobile problem but my friend and an ex said they text me a couple of times before but I never received any text messages. I'm using the stock messaging app. This happened yesterday and I still never seen the texts. This is probably happening with sent texts but I'm not sure. I'm in Atlanta, Georgia if anyone else is having similar problems in the area.
I also have a calling problem where I'd call someone sometimes and it says they pick up but they really didn't and I don't hear anything. I think it's a problem with wifi being on but this also happened on my old side kick phone '08 model before i upgraded to this phone which doesn't have wifi.
bump. no one?
I just exchanged my phone yesterday and it's still having the same problems.
Bump again.. I reset my phone and the problems (mainly the pattern and unsure of other problems) eventually comes back.
No one is having this problem? Can anyone even try to reproduce the problem So I know that my tmobile place doesn't have a bunch of defects. I mean if I wait a Second or two before entering the pattern then it would work.
I also notice that there is maybe a screen/touch issue at the bottom right corner of the phone. I could see the issue with multi touch vis test in the play store.
I sometime have a problem with air view writing by itself and having the s note freeze up.
Wait till the lakers game is done homie!
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium
I also noticed a problem with calls not being able to be picked up. I'll have to constantly slide the accept button before it answers.
I think there's also a problem with calls being dropped on wifi.
Airview sometimes draw by itself.
Bump again.. there's also a problem where screen is timing out too quickly. Even when I changed it to 30 seconds, it still times out at 15.
The battery also dies pretty quickly with occasional texting using the stock app. It goes from 100% at 8am to 68% by 2pm. People also have a problem hearing me when they call me or I call them and I'm on speaker phone. Even when I put my mouth closer to the mic they still can't hear me
Sounds like a wifi calling issue, it really doesn't work well for me, even on my old HTC Sensation I experienced the same exact thing. Wifi calling is enabled by default check in your settings menu and disabe it. As far asyour battery issues are concerned it sounds like there is something running in the backround draining your battery. Check to see if your phone is sleeping when it should be. Check all of your settings because it sounds like something is draining your battery. If you try all of this and still have a problem, go exchange it, perhaps you have a faulty unit. I hope this helps. The only time I have had the issues with calls as you've described it was because of wifi calling..

I don't use pattern unlock so I cannot confirm that issue. Battery life for me is outstanding, I did have an issue with it on the first day of use but it was an app causing it to be awake constantly. I uninstalled the app and my battery life is incredible 6+ hours of screen and calls and it still lasts forever. I am not aware of any missed texts. Wifi calling is just awful so I don't use it and I have no problem making or receiving calls and texts even when I have a week signal. Compared yo my Sensation this is a huge upgrade and I am not having any issues.

I just got my phone exchanged through the mail and it's still having the same issues.
Also there are these weird markings/dots on the inside of my screen. Maybe it's a lcd bleed/screen issue. It appeared in my past couple of exchanged devices. [Q] A couple of Day 1 questions/issues

I've just gone through my first day of use with the LGOG, and a few issues have come to my attention.
The first is that while I was at work, i felt the device getting hot in my pocket. When I checked to see what was going on, it was searching for GPS. I had tried to use Maps, and it couldn't find me so later on I turned on location services/satellite GPS so it could actually find me. I haven't noticed it since. Could that have been the solution?
Issue 2 was that it seemed that my WiFi was turning on by itself, and it was draining my battery searching for a signal. I had turned it off when I left my house, but it seemed like it came back on and started searching in vain for a signal. I turned it off again, and haven't had that issue since. Has anyone else had this happen, or did I accidentally activate WiFi without knowing it and that's all there is to it?
One other issue I was having was with the text cursor freaking out and going to the front of my texts. I can't really remember for sure if it has happened since I updated to ZV9, so does anyone know if ZV9 had a fix for that or if I've just been lucky the past few hours?
Thats all I can think of for now, thanks for any help you guys can give me!

For your wifi randomly turning on make sure you have connection optimization off (system settings, mobile networks). ZV9 shouldve fixed the crazy text issue. Not sure about your device heating up with gps, maybe you had Google maps running in the background trying to pick up your location. Hope I helped!

Also, I am wondering if anyone knows about the Qualcomm Enhanced Location Service. Does it help or hurt performance/battery life/etc...?

The connection optimizer basically turns on wifi to search for a signal and then shuts off if it can't pick up anything. Of course this only happens when you have it checked and using data. I'm not certain what the qualcomm enhancement location service does besides help you getting a gps lock.. I know I've always had it enabled and gotten an instant lock almost all the time with great battery life. On a side note, you'll love the speed and build of this phone, plus our devs are working hard to bring us jellybean sooner than sprint/lg

Thanks for your help, I will leave optimizer off and turn qualcomm on.
I came from the Evo Shift, and I am just blown away with the speed, screen clarity, and beauty of this device. I've had to go back to my old shift a couple times to get a thing or two off of it or check what apps I'm forgetting and each time I get pissed at how slow and small it is haha. I'm loving it so far, and hopefully with these small issues worked out I will love it even more. When the roms start dropping, well thats just a bonus =]
Thanks again you guys!

Haha I hear you. I had the ep4t before this and although I still think it's a great device, i can't believe how slow it is compared to this.. Plus the difference between the two screens isn't even worth comparing. Glad I could help

I had the shift and then went to the photon. even the photon seemed slow compared to this lol
In regards to notifications, is there any way to limit update intervals for facebook? I feel like its going to eat my battery up if its always telling me about facebook stuff the moment its posted lol.
Also, is there any way to increase the rate that the notification light blinks? I feel its not blinking regularly enough for me to notice it if I've got a text or something.

Under facebook settings just change interval to update less regularly. I use flash blink. It actually flashes the LED light to let me know. Unless of course you want to be private about it.
To add a little about the Connections Optimizer: It's Sprint thing that they're adding to all of their phones. It basically turns on wifi briefly, even when wifi is off, to try to connect to open wifi networks. I'm pretty sure it's an effort by Sprint to keep people off their 3g/4g network and on wifi whenever possible to reduce bandwidth usage. It is also incredibly annoying, because it notifies me of the free wifi in my city (that's strong enough to locate, but not strong enough to transfer data and stay connected) every time I am in certain areas. The pop-up about new open networks also gets in the way of receiving phone calls sometimes. Turn it off. Android already connects to your remembered wifi networks automatically, and I think you can handle the wifi on/off toggling.

I couldn't stand connection optimizer. Walking through NYC to go to work, I'd look down and see my phone actually connecting to and using ANY open wifi signal on my walk down the blocks. I would think that's a huge security issue for phones to randomly connect to any network it sees. Just think of how well easily it could be to rig a router to sniff all those data packets!

Strange behaviour you think only your Gnex has

I browse xda alot and stumbled up on many weird issues.
Maybe this thread could be an advise-thread like "don't use your Gnex with a Netgear N Wifi AP"
If there is no interest in this thread, just let it die
This is not a thread related to a specific ROM. More for flashaholic people like me who encounter little issues that occur on many different ROMs.
I will list my issues so you get an idea why I started this thread:
- If I connect my Gnex to the charger and use it, almost every time PIE will break and I cant navigate anymore (AOSP-PIE) - I have to reboot my phone.
- If I connect my Gnex to my schools WiFi (CISCO Hardware) I have constant data-download activity and my battery drains in no time
- Sometimes if I connect my Gnex to the charger it behaves like it gets plugged in and out very frequently
- At home, connected to my WiFi (Netgear Router) I have to constantly wake my Gnex to receive new messages (Whatsapp, Mail, etc.)
Maybe we can help each other with tips?
- cheers
I have none of these issues but one. The last one. I thought I was the only one! It happens randomly to me.. I tried to find a fix but havent come across any. Nice idea for a thread it helped me already

I have not faced any of these issues. Been changing ROMs ever since the day I bought the phone (A year and a half back).
That charging issue alone cropped up once. But I was able to fix it by pushing the pin in the charging port up by a bit using a safety pin
1. My volume down is busted. Pressing it on normal mode, nothing happens. In Safe Mode, it works though I have to press real hard. Due to this, cant do screenshots anymore.
2. I can connect this gnex to my computer fine but the phone does not detect the charge.
3. Much much more wakelocks when using original battery compared to a china branded replacement battery

well, that's interesting! I'm planning a replacement because my phone is two years old and so is the battery.
While using certain kernels with Trickster Mod and "set on boot" option, I get a reboot if the screen is off when Trickster applies it's settings. Took me a long time to figure this out. If the screen is on when Trickster applies kernel settings it works just fine. Never could figure out why this happens, but I use tasker to keep the screen on for 2 minutes after boot to prevent it.
