Charging other devices with your note 2? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, obviously our beautiful note has one of the greatest batteries available for any device. Soon, zero lemon will be coming out with a close to 10, 000 mah battery. This is obviously plenty for me, but I was wondering if it was possible suck the battery out of our phones and charge other devices like psp's, other phones, etcetera. Thanks

a very nice idea mate.. but charging a device from the battery of note 2 is impossible for the simple fact that it needs supporting circuits.. you can very well try the usb devices though via otg cable... but i dont think its of much use

I would imagine you can charge things, though it might be slow. If you can run a flash drive or whatnot there is something coming out from the OTG cable. Not sure if you could plug something heavier like a full blown hard drive in but I can't hurt to try right?

Well if you can power external hard drive then you can certainly charge other phone though I think the speed would be low.
this is XXXDDDAAA

i always charge my blackberry via my note 2 via the USB OTG cable. but i use it as a last resort because the blackberry is for work and i cant let it die

Hey every one, I got my zerolemon and it's amazing. I also got a micro usb to micro usb cable from hakshop.com and can charge my mom's s3! It's not that slow either.

Lol, I had my friend's iPhone 4S charged for some emergency backup from my Note 2 Yeah it charges pretty much everything that you can charge via PC. Just get an OTG cable that's all.

I can... charge my tablet?!

Hey guys,
So I made this rather funny discovery (not surprising though). I have an OTG cable for my Gnex to read USBs, out of curiosity, I plugged in my USB data cable for a Galaxy tab 7 (P1000).
Since this tablet doesn't really have USB host functionality (unless I have like 300 cables and a power source), my Gnex was charging my Gtab :\
If I were to get a new tablet (which I plan to later), could I choose which device to charge which device? Say e.g I want to charge my phone using my tablets power. I ask this since newer tablets have host functionality.
Thanks
Bwahahaha. I have visions of a short guy bringing a tall guy a ladder.

it's not going to work, you can't output power through MHL or host(im pretty sure) and besides the voltage would be to messed up to charge. so no.

I see your point, the charge provided by USB host wouldn't be that high anyway...
Would be a cool function to have though right? I've been caught in situations where I wish my tablet could charge my phone ...

Yes you can output current through OTG, so it is not a wonder that you can charge your tablet. Otherwise you could not even use any memory sticks and such.

Every night i charge my Galaxy Nexus using my Motorola Xoom.
I have my Xoom plugged into the wall charger --> my USB Host cable plugged into my Xoom --> my USB-MicroUSB cable plugged into my Galaxy Nexus.

I doubt the GNex can output enough power to charge the huge tablet battery at anything but painfully slow 1% per hour process.

Moreover, the Xoom cannot be charged through USB...
But I like the idea to charge the GNex through the tablet. It's got quite a large battery. Two actually.

The other way around works just fine with my XOOM. My XOOM can charge my old N1 and my new GNEX just fine... XOOM has like 3 times the battery...
Seems like that any new tablet I get then would be able to charge my phone then
I won't be charging my tablet much, most likely tablet charging the phone e like you guys have mentioned!

[Q] Charging Problems...

Hello there,
I had bought the Samsung Galaxy S3 pretty much a week after it had been stocked in the shops. I got it with T-Mobile on contract and recently it takes like 4 hours to charge the phone through the PC, I'm currently sending the wall charger back with the 2 year warranty that European Trading Standards give as it doesn't work at all with any device.
Little Bit Information:
Rooted: Yes
ROM: CyanogenMod 10 (Latest Nightly)
USB Charger: The one that came with the phone
Please could anyone suggest or tell me how to fix this horrendous issue,
Much appreciated,
Thanks,
Josh
Plug it into the wall instead of your computer. Most newer devices (like the iPad, for instance) take forever to charge through the PC, but charge very fast from outlet. 4 hours through the PC sounds about right.

AKA: I have no plug charger...
Hope I'm wrong but i don't think there is a solution for you then, it requires a certain amount of voltage or amps to charge at a normal (wall charger) rate. Maybe try a ps3 or Xbox it might put more power out?

go to store buy adapter...this is not an issue with the phone it is an issue with you not having the proper accessories
You could use ktoonsez kernel. It has a fast charge option for usb charging. There is a warning it may cause damage to usb in rare cases but I do it all the time never any issues. May be a temp. Fix til you get your new wall charger.

If you're stuck with a PC USB port, best thing is to just do a slimming down. In my experience streaming music or video is the biggest killer, at least on wifi.
You have to remember that when you charge from a computer your phone connect to it and begains to communicate with it. Even without doing any file transfers it still connected and using more juice. From my understanding the fast usb charging on the kernel mentioned turns of the transfer ability to increase charging time. If you dont want to wait for your replacement then go buy one from walmart.

Get a kernel which supports fast charging. Faux and ktoonsez I know for sure has it. Charging is like half of what you said and 2 hours when screen is off

[Q] Charging Note 2 via Laptop USB

Hi I understand that laptop usb ports only giviing out 500mah and the charger we have gives out 2 amp, and charging via USB port from the laptop will be really slow based on my previous experience with other android phones.
Have anyone try charging the note 2 via a USB port and how long does it takes for a full charge? Just a curious question.

i find the cable quite annoying to be honest, it unplugs itself with any movement and it takes ageeeees to charge but i guess its a good thing because the batt does hold up quite a while. Need something faster tho as im always on the move
i had 87% about an hr ago and i put for charge with usb and is all charged,i always charge with usb

Wow that's fast. Is there anything different or are you using an adapter of sorts to charge from your laptop? Mine takes forever to charge from my laptop.

Nope. Just regular USB 2.0.
Are you using your phone whilst it's charging? I'm not, except to check an email when one arrives...
Best thing to do is to close wifi and lock the mobile or even completely shut down the mobile if u dont neef it while charging, it will charged faster this way..

Ah no wonder. Yes I was using the phone while charging it on usb. I guess the charging rate could not keep up with the power used.

I use Android Revolution ROM with Perseus kernel and it's quite faster, but I think this kernel makes the phone draw 900mah instead of 500 so maybe it's because of that.
Sorry. You are all misinformed.
Usb gives .5A in dumb mode.
When the device talks to the host and asks for more, very often it will get 1A on older computers and 2A+ on newer ones.
Some even have a yellow port that gives 2A even when the pc is off.
So theres no simple 'chargin on computer usb' its damn complex. Only if android showed amps its getting....
My nexus one had 'spare parts' app that showed charging was either usb or ac, meaning .5A or >.5A

Losing battery life while connected to charger

Yup. This is one of those phones that you must use the supplied charger. Its more a tablet charger, not a phone charger
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
For starters....they give you a charger with your phone for a reason. You can't really complain if you aren't using the charger that came with the device. Second, the Note has a considerably larger battery, larger display, and quad core processor. These all draw more power. The provided Note charger delivers more voltage than the S3 charger. If anything you would want to use your Note charger to charge your S3.
Thank you gentleman, just checked and I think the one I was using was a 1.5. Might have been the one that came with the original Note cuz it looks similiar but is black. Btw...I wasnt complaining, just looking for help.

I had the same trouble with note 1 also, I found on the average any chargers over 2 amp tend to work the best. It took forever to find a car charger that could keep up with streaming music especially with LTE.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
Thats wierd. I charged my phone with a one amp iphone charger last night. Worked just fine.
But it didnt like my 800 mah motorola charger.
My ipad/iphone chargers laying around will charge it just fine as long as it isn't in use at the time, they can't keep up if I am on the phone, well at least note 1. I tried a usb port on a power strip last night on this and it charged very very slowly also.
Fwiw my car has a usb port also, and the results are much the same.
It's a Samsung issue that nobody is willing to acknowledge. For some reason they only allow their phones to draw 0.1A over usb instead of the the standard 0.5A. Your note isn't recognizing your charger and is defaulting to usb mode. The idea that your phone would need more than 1A just to keep up with normal usage is ridiculous.

Battery

My battery been charging really slow lately. My phone has never been dropped or has no water damage. Can someone give me an idea and if so will a factory reset help out?

I had A similar issue and it ended up being the USB cable that came with the phone. I switched to another one and it charges so much faster.

You can buy another battery... maybe the battery is the culprit happened to me... But i ended up buying an extended slim battery thats the same size as the stock one... It added to my battery life about an extra 4hrs... You can get it here http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-3960mAh..._Cell_Phone_PDA_Batteries&hash=item337ee79e91 well worth the money
Me too
I just started having the same problem. I use to be able to use my phone while it charges and it would charge fairly quick as long as I wasn't heavly using it. Now even when I'm not doing anything on it, its charging ridiculously slow.
I thought it had something to do with my recent flashing of 4.3 but I flashed a MC2 restore and it didn't seem to matter.
Get the Galaxy Charging Current app. It will let you know the charging current. It should be *Now: 1698*. Mine would read 466 and I would reinsert cable(until I got a new charger/cable) until it read 1698. It appears there is a problem with OEM cable.

Been working great for ~3 months on my Sprint Note II. It said that when I downloaded the app too. Try the free version, I like it and bought the app for the dark background feature.
I would try another USB cable first. I was having the same issue. I tried a different cable I have around, and was charging like I was expecting. So, I order two premium USB cables from monoprice.
From the reading on XDA around here, it looks like the USB cable that came with phone get shorts in them fair easy; ie they're not very durable. For me, no biggie since I like to keep cables in various places--car, house, backpack, go to bag, etc.
It changing the cable didn't work, try a different charger. If that doesn't work, try the battery. If none of those work, then it's probably your USB port.
Although, the USB cable is most likely the issue.
If you've had the phone for awhile, try cleaning out the microUSB port on it. I used a toothpick and picked out a surprising amount of lint that had accumulated in there. It may help establish a better connection between the cable and the port.
Definitely seems to be an issue with the usb cable, I had the same issue, switched cable, and all is fine.
