Otterbox Commuter? - Galaxy S III Accessories

I want to buy this protector... But I had some bad experience with the defender series. It was thick, heavy and the rubber started to strech a few weeks after I bought it. Now, I want to buy the commuter series which looks good on my friends galaxy s2... Ive checked out some reviews and its not as thick as the defender. It looks great on my friends S2. So I thought I might buy this from my S3.
Will the power and volume button be easy to use?
What do you guys think? Will it be 30 dollars well spent?

I have the commuter on my galaxy nexus. Zero major complaints. The power and volume buttons work every time I hit them. My only gripe is putting it on. Takes a little finesse to get the plastic over the silicone. Not a deal breaker as long as you aren't the kind of person who takes the battery out constantly.

I love my defender. Saved my phone several times. Drop it out of ceilings all the time.

Hows the grip? Does it slide in your hand or is it steady?

Thanks but Im talking about the commuter, I already have the defender

I would say its pretty steady. Then again my hands are huge and have a solid wrap around grip on it. I've had the case for roughly a year and I can't recall a time where the phone has slipped out of my hand.

How slim is it? It doesn't add a bulk like the defender does, right?

I've never seen the defender in person so I can't make an honest comparison. It does add a little thickness to all sides of the phone but I wouldn't say that it's much more bulky than the phone itself already is. You are talking about an s3 which is already a bulkier phone than my nexus. I doubt you will notice a big difference in your pocket. In hand, yes but that its expected since you are putting a cover on your phone.

I would also look at the UAG cases ^^
(Urban Armor gear.)
Awsome cases, With awsome support.

Have an Otterbox Commuter as my first case then bought a UAG after a few days.Never went back to otterbox. Buttons are softer in UAG cases and doesnt add too much bulk. +looks goood.

A very solid case, I like the feel..there are a little things that I will change tho. Specially with ballistic, beyond cell, etc coming in with new products to compete
Enjoy!

I like the commuter case better too. And it fits in to the Siedo surface holster well.
how is the defender thicker than the commuter case?by how many mm? mind telling?
thanks
The defender case is not a good case. At least that has been my experience. Loved it on my Evo 3D as it kept it very safe and secure, on the Galaxy Nexus it has caused damage.

Sorry to kind of hijack this thread but after using the defender for over six weeks, this is my conclusion.

I picked up a Defender because I didn't want to leave this phone totally unprotected. The case fits snugly and looks like it will give solid protection..however ( there's always a but I don't care for the screen protector, it makes text a bit blurry, the Defender also makes the phone rather bulky.
I'll use this case during the work week but will be looking for something slimmer & more elegant for weekends & special events.

I am using the otterbox commuter case with the seidio active holster... works great.
I just bought a defender, and am loving it, just a! Question. On the otter box site, some have said it fits with the Samsung extended battery. Can anyone confirm this? It does seem to have a little play with the OEM battery so I'm hoping it will.

That sucks that the member above had such a bad experience with this case. I have to think that somehow that particular case was defective. My Nexus doesn't move around one bit, even with the standard size battery. No movement at all. I also show no signs of wear whatsoever around the earpiece and ff camera. I've used this case almost exclusively since December 23rd.

I used the Defender series with my Galaxy Nexus with extended battery and it fits. Although, I too thought about removing the screen protector. It seems to take away from the screen vibrancy. I never liked or used screen protectors and dont like it on my case.

I have this case/holster. it does have a ratcheting clip on the holster btw. anyway what I was gonna say is regarding the screen protector. I had a screen protector on my phone before getting this case. I tested out the screen responsiveness with the ballistic SP over my SP and it suffered badly. So i chose not to use it. Maybe I will try to remove my SP and try the ballistic SP on it one day.

Cons: Smells horrible, Smells like petroleum (which it is made of) if the phone is a foot away from me it is very potent.
Needs a kickstand.

My maxx case came in the mail the other. I put it on right away just to find out the hard back cover doesn't stay on the rubber case. That sort of got me upset. Even the screen cover layer was a bit deformed. It was concave inward, not straight. Anyone else had a similar experience?

Its great. It's thin and durable (I use it without the optional outer rubber layer). Covers the ports of headphones and charger. There are also plastics films to protect the camera lens and flash lens. Only annoying hindering aspect would be the power button and home button. You need press with a bit of force. Taking it off is a hassle too, but I knew that when I purchased it. I popped off the built in screen protector since I have a zagg hd on mine, so I can't comment on that. It feels great and the kick stand isn't flimsy. Overall it is a great product.

Any word as to if they fixed how stiff the power button and volume rocker buttons were on these cases? I was considering getting one, but some reviews detailing how difficult and cumbersome pressing any of these buttons were put me off.
Edit: It seems to be somewhat usable in the video, but I'll probably wait til I hear from someone who is using the case on a daily basis. Thanks for the great video though!

I don't think the kraken looks that bad.
I have the commuter case and yesterday I dropped my phone from a height of 5 ft to the concrete. Landed on the top/back of the phone and nothing happen to the phone, the cover got like 5-7scuffs. The reason why I dropped my phone is because the Otterbox is very slippery, that will be my only complain about the case.

Otterbox Commuter Case and Case Mate

I've been looking for a case that offers adequate protection while maintaining a relatively slim profile. My search has led me to the Otterbox Commuter Case but I would like to know how much protection it offers compared to the Case Mate with kickstand

Ya, Im talking about the commuter. The defender is too bulky as hell and ugly, but the protection from that is crazy, thats not really needed.
Edit: Case mate is also a good case, but I had that for my galaxy s fascinate and after a year the outer shell case started cracking i know its from me constantly taking it out of the case to pull out the battery. But still, the quality of the plastic is too crispy, it was cracking on both sides, like I left it out on the sun.
case mate
case mate tough case is good. i have a otterbox defender it was WAY TO BULKY. i switched back to my case mate and installed a zagg protector. i missed the thin profile

My Otterbox Commuter came in two days ago. I still haven't opened it yet because I'm trying to decide if I should send it back and get an extended battery instead. Anybody experience something like this? If so what did you choose?

I personally use the Otterbox Defender, being a contractor I absolutely need the "excessive" protection for my phone. Its taken a few falls off a 10 foot A frame ladder and been completely fine. If you want a step down, check out the Sedio cases as well. The case they have that offers protection similar to the Otterbox Commuter is great for the price. If you combine that with a good screen protector you're almost at the same level as the Defender.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0062HIMA0/ref=cm_sw_r_an_am_ap_am_us?ie=UTF8
Thats the Sedio case I'm referring to, the holster is junk but the case really isn't bad for mid level protection. Check out the others mention in this thread thus far as well, they are all good options.

Yeah the Commuter is a great choice, just figured I'd share my experience with Otterbox alternatives since Otterbox didn't make anything for this phone for a while. Extended batteries are overrated in my opinion, if one can't access a charger to give the phone a boost (if not a full charge) than I'd say those mobile power packs are a better investment. Unless you can find a good extended battery that still allows for a solid case, and if you find that let us know cause I'd like to look into that. That's just my take, I'd rather my phone lose a charge faster and still be in one piece haha. Cheers, let us know what you end up doing cause I'm pretty curious.

Not sure to be honest because I've only had the Defender for this phone. If it's still the hard plastic inside with the rubber encasing it, it's bound to lose its shape eventually. My Defender's rubber outside is starting to slip off the bottom right corner a little bit, but I don't use the holster so I'm sure putting it in my pocket doesn't help. That and the case really does get a beating! But my phone looks like it's right out of the Samsung box every time it's out of the case so I can't complain.

Define "Best" there are MANY different "BEST" cases out there... check out my review of Otterbox Defender in Atomic color. I love it, but some might hate it.
I get a lot of compliments from people about the funky color...
Honestly, if you're looking for a case that can offer a great protection from almost everything but water... look no further. Otterbox has been manufacturing quality and very well designed cases for many years. Also, if you get it from amazon, you save about $20. just my two cents!
Like someone else said, "best" is cometely objective. My best may not be your best.... However, I prefer the Ballistic SG Maxx. If you search the accessories forum you'll find a mini review i did with some pics.

It's bold yes, but I don't think screen protectors are necessary. Cases yes. But a screen protector won't stop your screen from cracking or shattering if dropped, it'll help stop scratches. But gorilla glass is design to resist most scratches already.
My over 2 year old epic's screen still looks brand new. Even after drops and kicks...Just my personal opinion.
Kinda glad the trident kraken doesn't come with a built in one.

Why no mention of Seidio cases? I have been using their cases for my last few phones and they are great. My GS3 case has a magnetic metal kickstand and looks nice. It also feels well protected. I don't use a screen protector though as I also prefer naked. Personally, I think screen protectors offer a false sense of security on modern gorilla glass screens.
