go here: http://4ext.net/ and download the apk
install it on your phone, and open the app to install the recovery
this will overwrite you current recovery which is fine.
Then go here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2125513
Read part 4 of that guide.
Once you are done making the partition, boot into your rom. Open terminal emulator and run these commands (press enter after each line)

a2sd install

I do same thing with clockworth recovery on my desire. Make a 1gb (vor less) partition with ext4 and then use a2sd after booting in cm10.1 v5.3 rom. Works fine.

You'll have problems later, you'll see.
You know, we aren't telling you to do something just because we're nuts. CWM recovery does bad partitions, that may damage the sd-card, and make the phone work slow.

lol i agree. When i first had to make a sd-ext partition i used cwm and it messed up my sd card. I had to reformat.
Also avoid minitool partition wizard, that messed my card up too

Done everything as in abaaaabbbb63 tutorial, made 1gb partition and now i got 113mb free on phone memory, is this right?

However, again and again guys, thank u, it works really good now!

yes if you go to settings>storage it wont display the free space on the sd-ext partition.
If you want to see that download titanium backup, and it will show you how much is left on sd-ext

[Q] Gpart my SD ?

Hey, I've been following this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
I'm on Step 5 which is partitioning your SD card. My question is, do you need to do that? I am planning to get either an MIUI rom or a Cyanogen rom on my phone, so is it really nessesary?
Thanks in advance
I thing you need\nessesary\. Look recomends or something like.Sorry for my English.
Just read the requirements of the rom.... if it says you do then yes?! lol
Yeah it depends on the rom.. Just check the requirements for the one you want to use
Sent from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
I still dont get it :/ How much do I have to partition If I want this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=957291
And for future purposes, where does it say?
Thanks :S
do not use gparted. its unnecessarily complicated. I recommend you to flash clockworkmod, or better RMD recovery (you can easily adjust the partition sizes in future) and use that. Give it 1GB EXT, 0MB Swap, the rest Fat32. If you have a smaller sdcard, 512MB EXT (thats the bare minimum for future rom usage), 0MB Swap, rest Fat32. Thats it.
Okay, I'm going to use ROM manager as it is the easiest! I'll set the ext to 512 and no partition.
Also, Do I need to wipe my SD card to do this?
And would that be fine to download MIUI XJ?
Thanks a lot for all your help, I really appreciate it
Everything will be wiped on ur sd card, so backup! For MIUI it will be enough. In the future learn how to use ADB shell - thats the real deal.
Good luck
Don't forget to hit the thanx button

I just wanted to say that for future partition changes and so, it is quicker and easier to use the recovery
I agree gparted is very easy to use. Look in the dev area for a step by step on how to use it. Using VM Player you don't even need to boot onto it.

yes but whats the partition for!!

hi partitioned my sd card so no probs there, ive been searching for that exactly i do with the partition now ive got it lol,
in titanium backup i can see theres stuff on the new partition but ive no clue whats on there, so whats it for & how do i put things on it & what things? but most of all why did i make it in the first place?? lol
you're supposed to research this stuff before you do it...
i also hope that you've used either gparted or 4ext recovery to parition (not minitool...)
basically the partition is generally for apps. it's better than normal android 'move to SD' because you can move all of the app, and can move widgets too. you can also move dalvik cache to sd as well depending on the script.
this all depends on what rom your are using and what built in script (if any) it uses to move bits around.
further reading here, i'd recommend reading through more of those guides just for more general learning...
titanium backup will show that the partition is filling up. better apps like 'diskusage' will show you how all your partitions are being used.
i did try to find out as much as i could & the reson i did it before knowing why is cos i want to know i can do it more than anything else all i knew was everyone else is doin it so i needed to know how lol

Yh, dont use rom manager (cwm) to partition ur sdcard, it makes bad partitions. Like eddie says, use gparted or download http://4ext.net/ updater app then install 4ext recovery and use that to partition sdcard.
Dont forget backup first

uninstall rom manager like you would any other app if you haven't already. you don't need it, and can cause real problems if you use it with this phone.

yh nandroid backup and save on computer also anything else u want to save. then depending on what rom ur going to install, partition ur sdcard to what ever the rom requires. so once u know that, boot into recovery go to tools/partition sdcard/ remove all partitions and start from scratch.
then ul have to choose size, normally most requirements would be this setup
1024 (1gb)
skip
skip
then choose ext4 and ur done.
just dont go bigger than 1.5gb ext4 (1524)
check ron requirments first tho

V. Little Storage Space

Hi, I have a problem where the phone only allows me to install about four 3-4mb apps before is says 'storage space is running low'. This has been the case for a long time over many roms.
Tried with and without an 1gb ext4 partition on a 16gb and 32gb memory card. Roms tried include most ICS, JB 4.1 and JB 4.2. Have also tried with a2sd and without. Result: no changes.
Am currently on Nikez's 4.2 roms.
I hope there is a solution...
Thanks

About 100mb - but it gets 'used up' with about 20mb. I am s-off, stock hboot. Is there a way to completely return it to factory settings so i can start over again. Factory resetting doesnt help the problem, nor does swapping sd cards

Exactly after flashing the rom, flash this:

It should get you a lot more space by also moving dalvik cache to sd-ext (no need for terminal commands anymore)

My sd card is currently not partitioned, and i don't really want to re partition it. Is there any way to fix this without partitioning sd card. I have previously tried a similar file to the one you posted, and it allowed more apps to be installed but still not as many as was used to
Edit: Having seen your sig, i read the how to partition guide, and I used the 4ext recovery method. Is it possible to remove and then recreate a partition from that recovery?

MW9.5 is very stable. How did you partition your SD card? Suggest you to wipe everything, re-partition if needed and flash. Everything should be working just fine.
Alternatively, you can try other MW ROMs like the one based on CM or oxygen. They're working perfectly too.

You are probably low on space because you are still on stock hboot.
Nandroid backup and change hboot using fastbout commands, search for guides. There are custom hboots posted in that thread if your search. Or just use something like cm7r2 hboot.
512mb is also quite small, you can use at least 1gb.
Check everything is working by installing another app like diskusage to browse all your partitions.

More RAM on Desire

Is any chance to add more memory on desire?
I mean in hardware way? Add one chip on board or replacing current module with larger?
No u can't do that.
The closest u could get to having more ram is to make a swap partition on your SD, and use a ROM that supports it.

I using S2E and when type in terminal free, says swap 0?
U have to partition your SD Card first so u have 1 partition made for swap ( usually 128MB) u can make it in 4ext.
