I know what they stand for but I'm looking to apply a tweak from TK and everywhere I read "TW will not work with AOSP and vice versa" so how do I know if I have a TW rom or an AOSP rom? I'm on LiquidSmooth which I believe to be AOSP, but how do I know for sure? Also what is the difference between a factory/data reset and wiping the system entirely? Because in TWRP there is an option to Wipe Data and an option to Wipe System, and I always choose to Wipe data before I flash anything but when I click "System" it says "This will wipe your ROM" which sounds safer before flashing a new ROM to me, but then again with just wiping data I've never had a problem with flashing a ROM.

Try typing in those questions in Google or the search here on XDA I bet you find an answer real fast. Also if you don't know the difference bewtween AOSP and TW I would suggest not doing any tweaking or your next post might be, I BRICKED MY PHONE HELP.
TW or Touchwiz is a proprietary layer that Samsung places on top of the android operating system; it requires it's own set of framework which enables it to give u that fancy user experience. When u first bought your Samsung phone i.e. galaxy s3, u will notice that it comes preloaded with TW. On the other hand, AOSP is basically the pure android experience, if u ever seen or played with nexus phone, then u will notice the difference in layout and graphics. AOSP has it's own set of framework thus making it incompatible with TW. Although some devs have been able to port certain apps from one system to another. That's why u have to be really careful when flashing kernels, make sure they're compatible with the ROM u are CURRENTLY running on ur phone.

I tried doing a search but nothing seemed to answer my question. Also I've been doing some tweaking here and there for educational purposes, nothing major just followed some UV tables and governor values. I have yet to use one of the TK tweaks due to my lack of understanding of the difference between TW and AOSP. Thanks for the concern but I'm really cautious with this stuff, my first time rooting/flashing was 100% success because I did my research

So essentially, most custom ROMs are AOSP unless otherwise stated? And then these TW kernels are usually targetted towards people with rooted phones on the stock ROM correct?

No. There are plenty of touchwiz custom roms, actually probably more than aosp roms. The easiest way to tell if you have touchwiz would be to look at your system apps. If you have touchwiz home or a bunch of apps with sec in the name for example sec_phone.apk or sec settings.apk you're on a touchwiz rom. And yes you really do need to do a whole lot more research if you can't figure out which kind of rom you're on or you will end up doing something to your phone you won't like, most likely turning it into a really nice looking doorstop

Id prefer the thread. the more foot traffic it gets, the more likely it is to be stickied/devs update it.
I dont have the time to stay up to date on new roms/kernels all the time and id like it to stay rather relevant. it isnt locked so people can ask quesitons if need be on it.

Ok, I bookmarked the thread in my "commonly linked XDA" folder. Hope your wiki takes off, it's really something we've needed.
All you have to do is look at the size of the rom, TW roms are usually bigger than 400 meg, while aosp roms are in the 100-200 meg range. If your zip is big then it is TW, if not then its AOSP

I used to have an evo 4g . it was my only successfull root and i used this ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1412005
it was GREAT!
does anyone have something similar for my epic 4g touch? all i want is a mostly stock barebones rom minus bloatware. i am certainly no expert on roms and want one i can rely on just to work! i dont use wireless hotspot but i need everything else to work.
help!
Thanx
For TouchWiz there is Calkulins E4GT 2 which comes with a barebones converter that you can flash.
Here is the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1527041
That includes the ROM and the barebones converter.
Otherwise there are the usual AOSP ROMs, AOKP, CM9, Miui.
you can make any rom barebone if you like. Like mentioned above there is a converter zip now and also you simply can remove files in the zip prior to flashing. For AOSP there is a slim and trim rom in development. I think you should just take your time and go through development and see whats out there.
Ive always had better luck flashing something close to stock and pulling stuff out myself. Chances are that you use your phone different than the rom dev and you might want or need something they don't. There are several variations of fe22 you can try

Cauklin's e4gt 2 v 1.6 works really well and after using rom convertor is stripped down to a bare rom very stable at least that has been my experience with it.

Hey!
I have tried to modify JB 4.2.1 systemUI.apk to put the clock to center on the status bar but decompiling and recompiling will fail.
I have tried apktool if C:\user\blablabla\framework-res.apk but it won't do it, it gives errors and on Linux Ubuntu I have same issue..
I ahve tried to modify ICS's systemUI.apk by replacing the status_bar.xml file but it will nor recompile the .apk so I can't edit status_bar.xml..
What to do?
On Windows 7 I use apkmanager v5.0.2 and on Linux Ubuntu Lucid Lynx I use FJ apktools v2.4
whats the point on staying on stock if you're going to modify it anyway? modifying it is going to alter your ability to get OTAs. just flash a custom ROM that supports this feature that u can change in the settings.

I don't even know what you mean by "themed like an old Android OS" because that makes absolutely no sense because all of these roms look exactly the same because they are compiled from aosp which is using the holo theme as stock.
There are very minimal roms out there that are left completely stock and dedodexed.
Just because you somehow don't like cm or aokp doesn't mean you have the right to bash them by calling them crap either.

It's obvious that you can't do what you want to do. That's why there are developers, they do it for YOU and push it out to the masses so you don't have to manually modify line of code by yourself. I'm not a developer so I can't help you by that, but what I can do is suggest a workaround. And that would be to flash a ROM with this feature so you can just go into the settings and just change it from the clock displaying on the Right to the center.
No reason to get an attitude by saying CM/AOKP is "crap." Who are you to exactly call another group/individual's ROM to be crap when you can't even produce your own? Especially when these people are doing it for FREE and as an hobby.
When you get the next OTA for Android you won't be able to update anyways because you would of modified a core element of the stock ROM that would cause a failure on a OTA update.

I know!
But I like Stock ROM and I update my Nexus different way than as normally..
I wan't to modify ROM myself because then I can get that to the ROM what I need and not more extra that is in custom ROMs like tweaks for speed or custom kernel, etc.
I have always liked stock ROMs and I don't want to change to AOSP ROM, CM ROMs are usually buggy and updates to nightlies comes everyday with fixes and that's enough when I use CM9 and CM10 on my ARMv6 devices.
There's nothing wrong with someone wanting to overcome an obstacle and learn. That's how all those "developers" you speak of came to be. There's nothing wrong with him asking for help. He doesn't have to use a custom ROM if he prefers not to just because it's the answer for you, or because you have no legitimate answer for his question because you don't know. If you don't have the info he needs, then stfu and just move on.

Well said Zeinzu,BTW me also having the same problem as the OP..Trying to decompile the framework/mms/contacts/systemUI that comes with 4.2 rom are now useless.Any idea that anyone can give?Going to edit the status bar to semi transparent but decompile failed,Plus i can and able to extract it but all i need it to edit those xml files that contains some coding as i've beed doing to my previous rom (4.1.2)
i was looking for a new rom and i know a lot of people ask about the best rom for our nexus, but i'd like to know if there is some rom optimized just for the galaxy nexus......i mean that i know that cm and aokp are very good roms, but they are not specific for the nexus. I'd like to get a rom with all those features, but optimized for nexus hardware
optimized for galaxy nexus?
stock rom and kernel of course..
btw u post this on the wrong section..

if you are looking for a rom that is soley build for the nexus and no other devices, i guess try to find the lesser well known ones. i dunno though i never run those ones. jbsourcery, aokp, cm10, etc i BELIEVE are all built for the galaxy nexus as well as some other devices. this has nothing to with how it will run on our phones. what matters is how good the developer is, and how effective you are at flashing new roms. dont dirty flash. wipe it like you wipe your ass and returning to stock via adb between flashes or every few flashes will help keep perfomance up. flashing to stock via adb isnt like flashing another rom, it will format and repartition your device. there is a difference between formatting and erasing.
any rom you will find for our phone is optimized for this phone, it has device specific drivers included, and is tweak and optimized to the devices specs.
What do you mean by optimized for Nexus hardware? CM and AOKP ROMs for each phone uses the unique drivers and stuff of each individual phone; otherwise the ROMs wouldn't work.
Optimized for Nexus hardware is pretty much just AOSP.
ok thank you for the replies.
For whom didn't understand my question, i meant that roms like cm are builded for different devices and the devs are not concentrated just for our nexus. In fact less known roms got more optimizations for our hardware. Maybe i'm wrong....this is the reason i asked here

perhaps you need to do a little more reading as to what a nexus device actually is....
if you see a rom in our dev section, it was built for our phone...its that simple. The best optimizations will come from the kernel of your choice, not the rom.

I am fairly new at rooting, flashing etc. This is the first time I've heard it's a good idea to flash back to stock every once in awhile. When you say flash back to stock, should a person be unrooting and locking the bootlader as well? Or just flash the stock rom and carry one?
I've rooted my phone plenty of times and flashed CM 10. I find myself going back to stock every time. I rooted again. So now what? Sorry for asking such an annoying question. I'm just at a loss with this. I need some direction.
What exactly is your question? If you don't know why you rooted maybe you shouldn't be rooting in the first place. You don't root just for roms, root is administrator access to the system. It allows you to access the system files usually blocked to the end user. Roms are just custom OS's chosen by the user and their tastes/preferences/requirements. You should probably do some more reading so you know what it is you're doing before you break your phone.

Both the above listed roms do have an optimized stock kernel with tweaks for optimization.
I don't root just to say "I'm a hacker" I have a decent amount of knowledge on what root access is. It is my fault for wording my question like I did. I keep going back to stock because I can't set my phone up the way I'd like. Also, for those who are developers...how do you do it? Developing seemed much more easier on Google's Nexus Line.
Is there any consensus or do all JB ROMs have little annoyances?
I'm basically out in the dark and afraid to try flashing 10 roms because I might not get the steps right as far as flashing the right kernel in the right order to prevent the mmc bug from bricking my phone. I think if it were as simple as downloading a new rom and flashing it I wouldn't care but having to flash a different CWM version and a different kernel for every android version you're installing is too scary
You'll probably end up with a lot of negative posts about the way you asked and what you asked.
I'm saying this in the very politest way possible...
Look, nothing is "bugless". Just flash stock JB one click leaks and call it good.
It seems like you created the OP knowing that you would receive the negative responses so why not just go ahead and ask a Mod to close this for you.
This is why those that take XDA in what it is for, and do thier homework, and spend the energy and time to research what is available - you just smacked them in the face by saying "I'm not gonna.."
So thanks for being honest in the fact that you're admitting to being lazy but please don't insult everyone here and expect to be spoon fed the answer.
(And I'll go ahead and report myself for my response, since you probably won't have the energy to do so.)

If you don't have the energy to read, study and learn, then XDA is not for you. Here, you are surrounded by hundreds if not thousands of people willing to help when you stumble or get stuck. Coming in and being dismissive of the work done by developers, themers, contributors and members is disingenuous and disrespectful. I should close this thread, but, you need answers, and already some have started, somewhat slyly, giving you direction.
We all hope you learn from your experience(s) from this thread as well as elsewhere in XDA, just be nice to others and remember the rules you agreed to uphold when you accepted membership.

Rewind and do yourself a favor, just go to the different rom threads and spend some time reading.
It's quite simple, if most of the post are members crying for help then you can deduce that that rom or build is buggy
You move on to the next one, here you read about great reviews and lots of praise, you chime in and ask questions.
It's that simple.

I'll throw you a bone, despite my better judgement. If you want jellybean, there are really only two ways to go: aosp or touchwiz. I'd start with dastin's cm10.1 or kobridge's deodexed gb27. Most other ROMs on this forum use one of those as a base.
READ both threads and decide which suits you better. Then once you are more comfortable, expand out and try some other ROMs.

I've flashed several other phones no problems but never had to worry about flashing certain kernels before doing a backup, or another kernel to change to a JB ROM, and then having to install a supported radio, during any of which I might need to do a data wipe, which will brick the phone.
As far as I can tell I need to have 3 safe kernels+ recoveries (for jb, ics, and gb) for use Any time I want to change ROMs and wipe data, and then a different radio for each kernel version?
Many of the threads don't explain this succinctly as I just put it, and many are out of date as well, hence some of my frustration.
But thank you for the replies that you all have replied.

Many of the threads don't explain this succinctly as I just put it, and many are out of date as well, hence some of my frustration.
But thank you for the replies that you all have replied.

Are you kidding me? Out of date?! Almost any thing you will find that is within the first 4 pages of any section of the E4GT forum is not out of date when it applies to a specific ROM or tutorial depending on what you are looking for. You are making up excuses. C'mon man. Throw us a bone. We have been here for quite some time and know the ins and outs of this section. Even people that don't have the E4GT anymore know this stuff... The Emmc bug is not an issue as long as you read the OP of anything. Do you think we are that gullible? I'm not joking when i say that the only way to brick this device is to either not read, or to flash something that is for a different device. If you are worried about outdated stuff, something that we don't have now, then you shouldn't be worried about flashing anything and should focus on reading. We are not just going to give it to you without you taking the effort to try for yourself.

You need 3 kernels, 2 modems, and any number of ROMs you may want to run:
Roms include a kernel that will boot. You only need other kernels for flashing.
Kernels-
El26+cwm- the idiot proof recovery kernel. Can flash anything with it. Will not boot ICS or jb ROMs.
El29 directboot- easy recovery kernel. Can flash anything except modems. Also used for the el29 tempboot, which is an easy way to update profile/prl. Will not boot any ROMs, instead it goes directly to recovery without pressing any extra buttons.
GB08 stock-daily driver kernel for touchwiz jellybean. Does not include custom recovery and can't be used for any flashing. Must be used when flashing mods for jellybean touchwiz in order for the ROM to boot.
Modems-
FL24 - latest ICS modem. An ICS (or gingerbread) modem is required for 3g/4g data on aosp ROMs or touchwiz ICS/gingerbread
GB27 - latest jellybean modem. A jellybean modern is required for 3g/4g data on touchwiz jellybean ROMs.

There are 4 threads all linking to each other all saying similar but slightly different things. One says you MUST flash from a supported cwm when doing a zip flash. Another says mobileOdin will WARN you if mmc might happen (wtf does that mean?), another says mobileOdin can do it if the ROM can do it, another says if you're flashing from anything but el26 you WILL brick your phone, another says download this app it will tell you, but wait I rooted and installed a safe CWM + kernel before I ran the app test, but for some reason my kernel version number didn't change, so maybe the cwm kernel is different from the phone kernel so maybe I need 6 downloads ready- 3 cwms+ safe kernels, and then 3 kernels for daily driving in the ROM one for jb, ics, gb, but there are probably 4-5 to choose from for each so we're looking at 20 downloads easy.
As you can see its all quite a cluster and difficult to parse for new VM users late to the game who are just jumping in now.

Wow thanks dude.
Others-- This is what I'm talking about! This information is split across at least 3 or so 15+ page threads, which have only a handful of useful posts.
Maybe if I get some time ill try to make one noob thread to rule them all and track down the mods until they depricate the old ones.
tis all way out of hand really, and I've made it worse by creating this thread
You're making this way harder than it needs to be. All you need is the el26+cwm for recovery and a kernel matching your rom type gb/ics/jb if you flash a mod. That's it. Stop making everything harder than it is and exaggerating the number of downloads. Hell if your not a total idiot all you need is el26+cwm and the rom you can pull the boot image right from your rom zip and replace the one in a copy of the el26 zip and you got a flashable kernel for your rom. Good god I didn't know it was possible for someone to be so dense. Oh wait, wait, yes I did. I see it at least once a day around here but usually 5 or more times. :banghead:
