I +1 this. Although I migrated away from TW onto APEX and haven't looked back. APEX has some similarities with TW, but the extra features blew me away. Maybe when source for 4.2.2 comes out and a decent TW 4.2.2 ROM pops up, I'll jump on it. So far I've been watching all of PMTR3's ROMs and overall been happy with them. Sons of Android Build 3 is what I am running now and it isn't fully stable (get an RR or SOD every now and then) but I get no call echo on my SGH-T989D. Before that I was running Jedi Knight 6 and it was awesome for an ICS ROM. Great battery life, had TW (but I still ran APEX), and had 0 RR's or SOD's... still had a few FC's but those were app specific and semi-reproducable and a logcat indicated it was a problem with the app not the ROM.
EDIT: Although with Jedi Jelly 6, I believe it is NOT a touchwiz based ROM, but I could be wrong.

good to know. Thanks for the info. PMTR3 is a good dev from what I have seen. He is helpful and fairly quick to fix major bugs in his ROMs and Kernels... and he has a lot of ROMs for different devices... I don't know how he finds time for all that.
But if touchwiz is required for the ROM you are looking at, I strongly encourage you to try any of PMTR3's roms. I personally have not used jedi jelly as I had read a few people had call echo or other audio problems and I went from Jedi Knight (touchwiz with android 4.0.4 ROM) to sons of android (apex launcher with android 4.2.2 ROM). sons of android is good as a "fun to play with" ROM, but has too many RR and SOD to be a DD... but I'm using it as a DD as I have gotten too used to the nice new features 4.2.2 brings to android. And with Build 4 coming out any day now, I'm comfortable running it. If you do decide that an APEX launcher instead of touchwiz is acceptable, I would try out Sons of Android build 3 but flash the Cerux Kernel. I've read that fixes most of the RR and SOD that occur in sons of android.
My favorite is the GALAXY 5.0 made by rushing. I have used it for close to a month and it's worked flawlessly. It's 4.0.4 TouchWiz but I use Nova Launcher.

most stable touchwiz rom
Jedi Mind Tricks X4
jmt jb3
JMT JB3 is pretty good. I was running AOKP for a while, then I started missing my touchwiz so I went back to jmt. Everything ran well, but if I used pie control it got a little laggy. Also, for some reason my battery drained FAST. Anyhow, if you like touchwiz, that ones pretty good. I find with all the custom ROMS, its all about what you're willing to give up. Each has their own cool customizations, but at the same time, you gotta give something up on every one.
I'm using Darth Stalker rom V4 it is smooth and for me fast..i will try JMT maybe it is much faster

I believe rushing turned the Galaxy Rom into the ODIN Rom which is in his thread in the dev section. If you want the original Galaxy ROM before the ODIN changes you may want to send him a PM to see if he can send it to you. I have the zip but don't want to post it here in case he doesn't want that version floating around. If he doesn't have it and says it's ok to include the zip here then ill post it.

Not to be rude or anything but all one has to do is look at some of the popular ROMs in the development sections to get a pretty good idea. The popular ones tend to always be near the top, provide great documentation and support, and provide pictures and videos to get you a great idea of the experience. Just spend 30 minutes looking over the various options, and flash a few to see which one you want to stick with. Flashing ROMs is so easy nowadays that it really is just a matter of how much time you are willing to spend playing around with them. I'm waiting for Jellybean ROMs before I really make the jump and satisfied with the performance of stock (with Nova launcher) until those JB ROMs become pretty stable and can be used everyday.
You really can't go wrong with any rom currently out. I've tried them all out and they won't disappoint. I'm currently running Freeza's rom and though it's touchwiz based, he really changed it up.

For me they have all basically been the same in regards to battery life. At a minimum I can pull 16 hrs on battery with 4+ hrs of screen on time with each rom. I'm not really into playing games on my phone so that helps. However, battery life is really user dependent because we all use/set up our devices differently...so what may end up being good for me may not be the best battery life for someone else. Definitely give each one a try though and see which works best for you
I'm definitely going to try them all, but god damn are all TW roms almost 1gb in size? I thought sense roms with big @ half the size.

I don't think that's necessarily true. I've seen a few people post that FreeGS3 is noticeably smoother and less laggy than Blazer. Not knocking Blazer since it may have some other features that people prefer.
For my previous phone (EVO 3D), I tried several Sense ROMs and there was a significance difference in performance among them. Is it such a stretch to assume that a similar variance would be present in custom TW ROMs?

It really depends on your own preferences as they all appear to be stable and running well..

I get your point but the beauty of XDA is also in the ability to solicit opinions to make an informed decision. I don't think my question was that out of line. It's not as open ended as simply asking what the "best" ROM is.

I haven't tried all the ROMs, but JB is definitely ready. I would never go back to ICS. I personally like the cm10 based ROMs. GPS is the only buggy feature. JB is so much smoother than ICS, its like a diff OS.

Honestly.. JB is much faster, snappier and smoother. But... if you value battery life, stay on darkside evolution. I would definitely try them out though. Just nandroid back up and try liquid, cm10, or AOKP. All excellent. But like I said, as far as battery life goes, Dark side is still my go to.

If you value battery and responsiveness or stability I'd suggest you stay where your at. I've used all the jelly bean variants for days at a time and they all have presented 1 issue or another. Some would argue there problem free but occasional graphic glitches, ****ty battery, no wifi calling, call echo , gps problems, no flash support, and low speaker volume are some problems I'm willing to bet money you have at least 4 of these issues. Ive just got around to using Evolution 3.8 after hearing rave review and I must say its clearly the best TW rom and possibly the best rom I've ever ran on this phone. If you don't mind cm9 I'd suggest giving the Xperian Rom a go its stupid smooth and unbelievable battery life for a non touch wiz rom. FYI slim bean and liquid smooth rc 7 do kick ass so if do try JB thats where its at.

I'm eager to try one or more of them. Being more of a theorist than an experimentalist , by any chance ... is there anywhere that summarizes/compares them in one place? Especially with some commentary. That would be awesome.

Hi there, I'm a long standing G2 user switching over to a Galaxy Note II (in the mail). Shopping around for what ROM I should try first, kind of having a hard time wrapping my head around features I should care about and where each ROM is in the stability and completeness sense.
I'm more into the stock Android look and feel, so guessing TouchWiz is garbage I don't want. NFC sounds fun and I want LTE to work once the Tmo network is turned on. Maybe play with some wireless charging. Also really looking forward to having a device with a stylus again, so what S-Pen stuff should I care about? Also are any of the other "S" labeled apps and features from the stock ROM desirable (S-Beam for instance)? Additionally I want to eventually use the thing with an external keyboard and mouse through that nifty dock.
Basically I'm looking for ROM recommendations, got any?
Thanks!
i would recommend you to Jedix9 and Jedi8 ROM...try them out first if they fit your desires

Good Luck!
I'm not saying that AOSP based ROMs aren't absolutely great (because I am running the CM10.1 Nightlys ) but TouchWiz is actually pretty freaking great. I am an AOSP fanatic but I still loved TouchWiz. The only reason I am on CM10.1 is because I just wanted to try it because my previous phone only had CM10, not 10.1.
I will say though, the stock TouchWiz launcher did not have enough options for my so I used Nova Prime. That made it feel like an AOSP ROM from the future because it looked and felt a bit like stock Google code but had all the TouchWiz features I loved.
Basically all I am saying is at least give the new TouchWiz a shot before you wright it off because you may find that you enjoy it.
Happy flashing
I too would recommend jedi 8 as well. It's close to stock (wifi calling), and battery life seems improved.

Im on JediMaster 8 running perseus kernel. Both are a great combo for battery life. However, I do enjoy me some AOSP.
One question you should ask yourself when deciding if you should use AOSP or TouchWiz is "Am I going to use the S-pen frequently?" If so, go with TouchWiz, if not then I'd say try some of the AOSP ROMs
Jedi X9 with Color HD theme is really cool, very stable and without losing any stock functionality except wifi calling (which if youd rather have then use Jedi Master 9 which dropped last night) basically roms are the same, functionality wise
Top 3
1/ (tie) Jedi X9 or JM9
3 CM 10.1 nightlies (non TW) or some of the debloated stock roms
Recommend looking into kernals too, sometimes they are updated before the rom is and you can OC and UV for more battery/performance

Some roms do incorporate TW but as you mentioned you are more "aosp/aokp" inclined so youll lose out on several features (unless you flash TW based roms)

Ok, let me rephrase that question, which ROMs include TouchWiz features? Guessing the Jedi ROMs do? Any others I should look at?
Additionally if I'm going to run a 64gb MicroSD card, what kernel is worth while to test out with?
Thanks for the great replies!
While less popular/known it seems, you could always try Tweaked

I've got to second the recommendation to check out Tweaked (as well as extend a hearty "Thanks!" to dwitherell for his work)! It's simply a rock-solid implementation of the TW features plus, well, some excellent customizable tweaks One of the first roms that I flashed was from the Jedi X series, but soon after realized that I needed wifi-calling in my apt. so decided to check out Tweaked (1.0 at the time) before flashing Jedi Master, and have stuck with it ever since. Currently very happy / impressed running Tweaked 1.3 with the Perseus 32.1 kernel.
Im loving Jedi X9 wiyh Perseus kernel

Jedi, Tweaked, or rooted stock. Been running Tweaked since yesterday and it has some very nice features.

Thanks for all the responses, I've ended up going with Tweaked and am pretty happy with it. Now trying to wrap my head around how to access the SD card from a linux machine.

Everything. I've ended up running files over SSH with a local FUSE mount.
What is the most stable rom to flash on this phone?
That's a trick question there are numerous stable roms. Do you want jb, ics, gingerbread?

Check out the dev thread there are a few good roms floating around for jb.

I have tried some of them, but which one is the best? Because I don't think I'd want to flash all of them.

^^^^ this.
And besides, most of the available Roms are equally stable / very soon to be stable.
Do a good flash, making sure to wait a while right after flashing, and all will be good.

You need Jedi Jelly 6. Its a Samsung Touchwiz ROM. I have had nothing but smooth performance.

I've really been enjoying the AOKP Jellybean. There are some minor issues with bugs being worked out with the nightlies, but overall it's dope!
I've been on CM 10.1 nightly 03/23 since that day and it's really nice. Everything works smoothly and CM is a pleasure.

I second this one. Jedi Jelly 6 is very smooth. My only issue with it is that it's based off of a leaked AT&T ROM.
I believe ptmr3 (the dev) is working on a new version that is based on the recent 4.1.2 release specifically for the SGH-T989.
I switched to an AOSP based ROM and I'm never looking back despite wifi calling being a cool feature, but I never used it. Anyway, I've been using 2.2 Slimstars which was pretty great. The updates seemed to be a little unstable like the camera not working. Is the new one, 4.12 pretty much fixed? And are there many changes with 4.2.2? I may try PACman. How's that stability wise? Stability and speed (I just want it to work without waiting you know?) are priorities.
ptmr3's Jedi Mind Trick JB 2.1 is by the the fastest and smoothest and glitch free rom out there
I have tried almost all roms of the ICS and JB flavour
personally I do not like non touchwiz roms
and all CM and AOKP 4.2 roms do not support MHL output or Bluetooth mouse properly
everything seems to work on JMT except for OP known issues
So I switched to android 4.2.2 a while ago, on cyanogenmod nightly. But I saw mc3 was leaked, and want to try it.
Problem is it's 4.1.2, and I heard idle battery drain was improved in 4.2.2,but i can't recall my battery before this, since I recently got an extended battery.
Your opinion on whether or not I should chang to leaked "stock" MC3, or just stay.
I'm thinking about switching because I miss motions, parts of Svoice, and multi window was added in the leak.

So make a android and try it. It doesn't really matter what we think. It works great for TW. There is a rdf for md4 so an OTA will probably be out sooner then later, is my guess.

Isn't it true that it takes time for a Rom to settle in before the battery is at its best? I rather not have to do that

In my experience, it's only a day or two before it's settled.

LiquidSmooth>TouchWiz
I would suggest sticking with Android 4.2.2 since TouchWiz MC3 only has a few extra features which to me are mainly gimmicks while AOSP 4.2.2 is much better with a lot less loaded crap on your phone and it's easier to modify in my opinion.
I personally don't use Nightly ROMs since they tend to be unstable which is not worth it. I am currently using LiquidSmooth version 2.2. The great thing about LiquidSmooth is that it's based on Cyanogenmod+AOKP+SlimRoms+Extra=LiquidSmooth. Also with less bloat that means that there is less extra stuff sucking on your battery in an AOSP ROM. A very smooth, stable and fast ROM with no bloat unlike stock TouchWiz.
Or if you want to stick with TouchWiz I would recommend a custom ROM such as strongsteve's Odexed Blue ROM, very nice ROM and much more professional and nicer looking compared to other modified TouchWiz ROMs in my opinion.

I'm running Freezas MC3 leaked rom and it runs smooth. The new features are great. Apps like titanium backup or root explorer can take care of any bloat the TW roms have.

Yeah, I suppose you can remove the bloat manually but I find that a bit annoying. But it depends on what you like and want. Personally, my phone would pick up like 5/10 calls on TouchWiz while on AOSP ROMs it picks up all calls I make. I don't know why that is but hey it works.
I am running sons of android 4 . There is no battery drain issues on this rom. I can go all day with lots of use and still average well above 50 percent battery life .
I haven't used a 4.2 ROM in awhile, does anyone know if they fixed the issue with sound not coming through a dock when it is connected ?
Yeah its worth it! You get a more features

+1. ALTHOUGH, you also lose all of the Samsung features though, but I rarely used them (motion, smart stay, etc.) and they are mainly gimmicks to me. Multi-view could come in handy I suppose but I would just rather use the task manager, multi-view I would use all the time if I had the Note, not on the GS3 though.
If you want an awesome 4.2.2 ROM I HIGHLY recommend DeviantXone. It just got updated today with loads of new stuff. Great ROM and great devs.
If you still want a touchwiz launcher and android 4.2.2 AND paranoid android settings try out JellyBam, I ran that ROM for like a month

The only TW feature that I really miss is the stock video player. I loved floating that guy around and found it really easy to use. I tried the other floating players on the Play Store, but didn't really like them all that much. I currently use MXPlayer and allow the audio to play in the background. I deal with it, but once in a blue moon I'll restore my stock rom just to experience the glory of the floating video player.

I suggest that if you're interested in a ROM, go ahead and try it out. Different people like different things, so it's up to you to find out what works for you. With Titanium Backup and nandroid backups, it's easy to switch to different ROMs without losing critical data.
Personally, I ROM jump a lot. If I see something that looks interesting, whether it's 4.1, 4.2, TouchWiz, or AOSP, I'll check it out and run it for a few days. If I don't like it, I'll either nandroid back or flash another ROM I found interesting. That's what I love about Android.
My bad, I'm working on a ROM as well! So when I get done you should give my ROM a try...I'm trying to make it fully stable

IMHO, if I wanted an AOSP ROM I would have gotten a Google Phone. Buying a brand name phone will always come with brand-specific bloat.

Yea, but the nexus 4 isn't on sprint (yet?) And the galaxy nexus is pretty old specs wise. If one person wanted the latest and greatest, and they were on sprint, it would most likely have to be a brand phone...
