MultiSystem is a powerful tool for locked- and unlocked-bootloader Android devices. it's used here to hijack the boot process & boot from a virtual ROOTED LP IMG in a 2nd EXT4 partition on the microSD card, that's independent on the physical system partition.
IMPROTANT INFORMATION: THE METHOD USED IN THIS THREAD IS SUCCESSFUL ON UNROOTED DEVELOPER EDITION WITHOUT USING A RECOVERY OR AUTO-ROOT - AND DOES NOT TRIP KNOX FLAG. FOR RETAIL EDITION, THE LOCKED BOOTLOADER SENDS A FLAG TO THE KERNEL TO WRITE PROTECT PARTITIONS INCLUDING SYSTEM.
POTENTIAL SOLUTION: BUILDING A KERNEL MODULE TO DISABLE WRITE PROTECTION AFTER PATCHING MEMORY TO BYPASS KERNEL MODULE VERIFICATION AND LOAD OUR UNSIGNED KERNEL MODULE – UTILIZING THE TEMPORARY ROOT ACCESS. WE ARE INVESTIGATING THIS SOLUTION. HOWEVER, IT MAY TAKE A LONG TIME AND IS NOT 100% GUARANTEED !

MultiSystem is a powerful tool and can perform potentially dangerous and/or destructive operations on your device and data that may affect your life. While it is unlikely to do irreversable damage to your device, it is not impossible, and you should proceed with caution. Loss of data and/or the need to re-flash a full stock (manufacturer-supplied) firmware IMGs (usually requiring a computer) is always a possibility, and is increasingly likely if you do not know what you are doing. It is possible to lose root access when using MultiSystem on locked-bootloader devices running unexpoitable (bu rooted) Android firmware, without careful reading of documentation or following the instructions. Please consult with expert users before performing actions you do not comprehend.

Now that instructions/details have been added, this post is obsolete.
Everything Pops...
I have to say, the spinning purple gifs, sparkling, scintillating, glitzy light effects, Facebook links, fonts of different sizes and colors...everything is just stunning.
It imbues a sense of solemnity, in subtle ways that bring ineffable joy.
This has got to be the best OP I've yet to see on these fine forums.
Thank you.
I cannot wait to see what ensues.

I'm being intentionally vague because you obviously didn't want to show all your cards in this thread yet.
However, I am curious (since I can't post in dev threads... I have to ask here) what the prerequisites are for this. Must one start with a specific software release? Can one enjoy root on a KitKat ROM, or must one be on Lollipop to get root this way? Is kingroot required, or are you jacking the code to install supersu instead of their weird proprietary su? Will it work on the Note Edge as well? So many questions...
Really, my most important question is: Can I finally buy a Note 4/Edge?!?

Don't listen to this guy... he trolled me like this back when I was on BajaROM. I almost forgot about the whole ordeal, since BajaROM has been completely off the map for updates. So long, in fact, that for a moment I thought it might have been back when I had an S3.
Anyway... we don't need any of his bad energy in this thread. Keep up the good work, @hsbadr. Stay professional.

First step is "flash NJ6 full firmware..."
So, does this mean that firmware updates don't burn the path and plow salt into the fields like they do on the Note 3? That step implies that you can downgrade, unlike my Note 3.

Note 4 bootloader wasn't incremented yet; you can go back & forth from NI1 to/from NJ6 to/from OAF. So, downgrade/upgrade is still safe.

Awesome news. I'm not quite ready to go to LP because I need KK for a few things. It really pains me to watch @hsbadr rip out all this awesome new stuff for my Note 3 while I watch from the sidelines. If I do upgrade to a Note 4, it's nice to know that I'll be able to dabble in LP a little to scratch the itch, and then go back go KK as a daily driver.

Step one takes you back to KitKat.
Sony Mobile is committed to supporting the open developer community, and one way to show this is by publishing parts of our code as well as selected tools developed by our internal developers.
For some of the Xperia™ devices, we provide Android™ Open Source Project (AOSP) device configurations on GitHub. This means that the software will be open for you as a developer to use and contribute to. This is a way for us to support the open Android community, and it is also a tool for us to facilitate and verify contributions to AOSP.
If you want to build AOSP for your unlocked Xperia device, you find all the resources you need in the sections below.

You said "Open source is important for us" on developer world blog... then why Sony blocks great camera features when we unlock bootloader?
This DRM protect is bad for encouraging open source community.
There will be more people if Sony doesn't use DRM protect for (at least) camera functionality.
Sony is doing far more for the developer / ROM community of its devices than any other OEM. The S6 and M9 won't have a good AOSP build for a while, probably ever.
Keep it up Sony.

That is my main question too, before I commit to getting the Z5.
I'd unlock the bootloader on my Z5 in a heartbeat, but considering I'd lose the camera and screen enhancements, I simply can't. People talk about how great Sony is to the developers, but considering that we lose device functionality (PERMANENTLY) for unlocking the bootloader, I simply disagree.

Well by the looks of Android M we won't get locked bootloader root on it due to kernel level enforcements. But I could be wrong and somebody could figure it out and work around it.

how to unlock bootloader, install TWRP, magisk, custom rom?
I made similar question on Mi Mix 1 forum, but since i'm probably going to buy this device, i think this is the correct forum
I am also very interested in how to unlock the bootloader and root the device. Great question!
If the device is imported it will likely arrive with an unlocked bootloader. If it doesn't, go here: http://en.miui.com/unlock/
Root access should be easy, once I have my unit and verify, I could post instructions though I think we'll have root and recovery support long before mine gets to me. The real issue is the mix 2 gaining traction with the modders, we'll have to wait until enough units trickle out internationally and get picked up by modders to build roms.
Looking at Xiaomi's recent phones and relative ease of unlocking, in theory, a snapdragon device should not pose a problem, especially since Xiaomi doesn't appear to oppose unlocking.
Xiaomi Mi Mix 2
If you consider the fact that this device is relatively new, you can get the idea of how much time will be needed by the developers to craft new ROMs for this device. It will take some time for TWRP Recovery. In this gap, you can unlock bootloader from below link :good:

You can usually install Google Play Services using an installation package which you can download from Mi store or as an apk. I have found it can be a bit hit and miss though in terms of getting all the contact and calendar syncing working correctly.
I've got the MIX2 now .and i've already unlocked the device, but there is no twrp recovery so i can not root the device....
could you post the intructions to revise other recoverys then MIX 2 could just root?
How did you unlock the boot loader?

I am new here and new to the custom rom scene. I am looking for some help with my new phone.
I bought a new Motorola G7 Optimo (XT1952DL) (Its about all I could afford) It came with Android 9 which is what I want. However, it auto updated itself to Android 10 which I do not want.
Android 10 has made recording phone calls, (which IS legal in my country/state, basically impossible. I need this feature more than any other feature I can think of right now.
I have been told that downgrading back to Android 9 is not possible. I am wondering a couple things and I hope someone here will be kind enough to help Me.
1. Does anyone know of any way (paid app or otherwise) on Android 10 that I can record my calls, non speaker phone, without alerting the other party they are being recorded? (Again I live in a 1 party state which means I dont have to inform the other person I am recording and for obvious reasons I would like them to not know because I feel like this will either make them just lie, hang up, block my calls, or something similar.)
2. If this is no longer possible on Android 10 does anyone know how to downgrade to Android 9 and make it so that my phone will not automatically install Android 10 on its own?
3. If neither is possible for whatever reason, I would be interested in using a custom rom that would allow this feature and possibly add more features. The problem is that I dont know which is the best rom or how to install a custom rom, although I am very good with computers, so a little hand holding would be necessary.
** Not sure if this is allowed but I would be willing to donate a small tip in USD via paypal or something if someone could successfully help Me with this task. Call recording is something I feel should be standard as anyone can just simply lie to You or scam You on the phone and without proof You are kinda screwed.
- Thanks for any help, suggestions, etc. I hope this is a good community to help Me with my problem. - Regards

- Regards

The device might be downgradable but you would need to unlock the bootloader.
Or there maybe a root option with the bootloader unlocked.

Well ...
Well the software Lenovo Rescue and Smart Assistant did in fact wipe and reset my phone to "factory" but it kept Android 10 eventhough it shipped with Android 9 so basically it didnt work.
If I loaded my phone with Cynogen (sp) or something similar that is based off Android 9 would that work? If so do You know of a link to a tutorial on installing that or have a recommendation on which to use?
- Thanks!

No lmsa will not downgrade firmware.
Factory reset only wipes user data it doesn't change firmware.

If you want to downgrade firmware you need to use
RSD Lite or fastboot.exe and bootloader will need to be unlocked before downgrade.
