Is it worth getting this phnoe coming from S3. - LG Optimus G (International)

Hi,
I own Galaxy S3. Very happy with it, but now I came across a good deal on this phone and looking at specs I really am tempted to get it.
So, Is it worth getting it. I just searched on XDA and glad to see it had it's own forums but now after looking around. The whole place looks like a ghost town!
Does this phone have unlocked bootloader?
Will we be seeing action here? (Mods, Custom roms, scripts and what not! :victory
What are t he chances of
Thanks!

I will be getting the Indian Variant (E975). I do not see any threads and stuff regarding custom roms and all

AOKP 4.2.2 and Vanilla Rootbox from Canadian E973 thread will work

So will most of the stuff work?
like kernels and bootloaders?

i dont know
but the kernels from this two roms works.
bootloader will not change at most models
when phones arrives try freegee and see if unlock is working.

Yes, the only noticeable difference is the modem. So, as long as you keep the right modem for your region, the phone will work ok .

Thanks! Jumpin' the LG bandwagon then.
Hopefully I will get the deal through.

ONE QUERY!!
What do you guys do if the phone bootloops or hangs??
I mean, You cant chuck out battery, can you?? Then what?

phones they cant remove there battery use the power button to remove it
press the button for more than 10 sec is the same like removing battery
its a bootloop aka soft bricked then you can use KDZ tool to install stock firmware

i had an s3 and will say this phone is way better, the s3 had some lag and the screen wasn't as clear as i would have wanted. this is a great phone, you wont be disappointed. no lag and just an all around great phone

Yeah I got S3, Thinking pentile will not show through the 720 display but it does!.
I love the S3 apart from that.
The camera is super awesome!!
One thing that concerns me is how good the LED flash on Optimus G is, cause from my personal experience. Samsung have had the strongest LEDs I have seen, I mean make the whole dark room seem like brightly lit in photos!
Also heard about this continuous focus thing which cause problem with setting manual focus??

to be honest, you get used to the continuous focus. It's really not that big an issue.
Also, it only refocuses when it thinks the picture isn't clear, and it is usually right when it refocuses.

Can you comment on how bright is the LED flash?

I had an S3 and to be honest it lagged even with JB. I'm guessing that was partly because of how deep the Samsung's interface customization goes.

When comparing phones, my biggest beef with the S3 was the display...the optimus G, even though it runs at the same resolution, looks considerably better than the galaxy. Just my opinion of course.

I'm thankful for this thread because I am in a similar situation. I have someone offering to trade me their ATT Optimus G for my S3. I'm tempted to trade but I am hesitant. My concern is the lack of roms and I hear the camera isn't great. Would any of you LGOG owners say the camera is bad? Also, can the Canadian Roms be flashed to the US ATT variant?
Thanks cool kids!

The camera is fine if you primarily use it in good lighting, lol. Low light performance is a different story. I have the 8MP version though.

thinking of trading my galaxy s3 for a galaxy nexus?

Should i ? Or just keep the s3?
spec wise i would keep the s3 since its more newer than the nexus
I really love flashing roms which the nexus has lots of..
But i did buy my s3 1 month ago so its literally brand new if i do
A trade i dont wanna be waisting my money that i used to get it
So idk should i do a trade??
Any ideas/opinions is greatly appreciated

LOL! You sound like a woman.
That would be downgrading. The nexus device is nice but its also dated now. Since you have already got the newest and fastest device on the market, why not just keep it?
The nexus doest grab my attention like the S3 does. The S3 has more features, screen space and ram. But until you try one side by side, you be the judge. Good luck with your choice.

This situation was the opposite for me. My previous phone was the Galaxy Nexus. I still have both and comparing side by side, I am happier with the GS3. I also understand that it's kinda "slow" here in terms of development for the GS3 compared to the nexus, but there are several awesome, stable roms from which to choose. Not to mention that it's still early in game and development will definitely kick off in the near future.

Agree the development for the u.s varient is slow but then again it is still early i dont want to regret it
Later on if i do the trade, maybe i should just stick with the s3.. it is newer better specs bigger screen etc..
I do usually adapt to the lastest and greatest tech and jump around. I see this device lasting for quite some time. I know other such as HTC will make a run for top. But this is my first Samsung device and i am more than pleased. I did manage to drop and crack my screen the day before my otterbox came in. Once it is replaced ill be a happy camper.
Another topic. Rooting the phone. Ive flashed so many roms on my last few phones that I feel compelled to NOT root the S3. The device works flawlessly and i dont want any unstable crashes or lags.
With the updated launchers working so well these days, i can fully customize my phone with out having to root it. Once Jellybean hits there will be nothing better for a while.
Coming from a rooted device, i truely see no need to root. I dont need backups if im not screwing with it. Aside from wifi tethering (which i have) its not required for me.

After reading your comment I was compelled to check and see how many of my apps require root. Currently only 3 of them do lol. The main reason I rooted my phone was because I did not like the green framework of stock....ICS is beautiful! I won't lie though, it's kind of second nature for me to immediately root even if unnecessary.

Data speeds are subjective. Even though the GS3 is capable of 42mbps I have never even come close to to that; not even the 21mbps that the nexus tops off at. All your other points are solid though.

Agreed. But runner a nice Apex Or Nova Launcher has changed from what it used to be. Besides i have insurance and a warranty. When i had my sensation, i flashed so many unstable roms, RILs, Radios, That i didnt know if my phone would every fully function again. I dont want to deal with that. the ONE X QUAD CORE is coming to t-mobile, DO NOT trade it for a international version (i had one, 2g makes u wanna cry, esp when you have to find a special sim to use it) . Also the NOTE does not work perfectly (if atnt) so don't bother with that either. Just wait a bit..

Tempted to upgrade to different phone?

I can't be the only one thinking about it with the lineup in 2015. The S6 Edge is sexy as hell but there isn't enough bang for the buck. HTC M9 is not even a contender this year (honestly HTC, you need to step it up). LG G4 sounds promising so far, although if LG somehow manages to screw something up in the specs/software, it's a long wait til the Note 5 and I'm not a huge fan of Touchwiz. I want to upgrade but my G3 is still pretty solid and I don't want to jump down below 5.5(ish) so I'm in limbo.
Anyone else thinking of upgrading? If so, which phone is tempting you?
No thinking about it, I will be getting the normal galaxy s6 next month. In my opinion you cant beat samsungs amoled screen and the exynos processor sounds amazing. Plus I like the idea of a fingerprint scanner over knock code now that it is touch not drag. I can live without removables, never needed to replace a battery and with 64 or more internal I wont need a sd. The G3 is a good phone but it already bores me, first phone I can say that about within the first year. I'll probably get some hate about this but my iphone 3g kept me happy longer. Sure that was my first smart phone back in 2008 but still... It was boring ios.

I agree on the G3 boring me part. My HTC DNA kept me interested longer than this phone did, for whatever reason. I was seriously considering jumping to the S6 or S6 Edge but I went to go check them out at Best Buy and neither of them amazed me. Sure their build quality is better than previous generations but nothing "wow"ed me and from what I hear, the battery life leaves much to be desired. Why Samsung went with 2500mAh, I have no idea. I can definitely live without removables too but not with a battery that small.
As much as i want to upgrade to the s6 edge i think i will hold off and see what LG has to offer. I like the G3 and have grown to like the buttons on the back of the phone as well as the knock to wake and sleep. Plus the g3 is the perfect size for me and the s6 is a tad smaller so ill wait for now.

The poor battery is from wake locks, the exynos processor Is 30% more efficient than the snapdragon 810 and the amoled screen takes much less power so after the wake lock issues are taken care of it should last just as long or longer than other flagships coming out.

The rumor mill is saying the g4 will be bigger. Personally the g3 is as big as I want to go with phones.
All in all we all have different tastes and the s6 is the flavor I'm digging right now. I guess we will see if I still think it looks tasty in a month.
Absolutely no Samsh_t for me whatsoever.
No root on Z3 stopped me from buying.
I may consider M9, but I'd like to see what G4 will be first.
Camera is a big thing for me and after having the Nexus 5, HTC M8, and a Samsung S5.... I am sticking with the G3 for a while longer. Lots of people talk about how great the Samsung S5 camera is, but I did a side by side comparison and everyone said the G3 pictures were the best. For the S6, I guess we'll see how that camera turns out. Plus, it's going to be hard to root.
Samsung is ****ing bloated all to hell and back. G4 looks like it could be much better than the s6.

You regret switching from the M8 to the G3? What do you like better on the M8?
And I agree with @dakpluto that the G4 sounds like it could be just as good, if not better, than the S6/S6E. Over-hyped phones in my opinion.

Honestly, my M8 was less laggy and just overall performed better. I know it's backwards, but in my experience, it was true. That and there's WAY more development for the HTC flagship phones on XDA than the G3.

I definitely agree on the development part. For whatever reason, LG G3 D851 had steady development but never exploded like my previous phones and seems to have dwindled now.
Thankful for what we got though!
Still loving my G3 on CM12.. Running great for me. As far as the S6 & M9 are concerned neither are worth the money (to me) to upgrade, and I even have an available upgrade. Ha. I bought my mint G3 non-contract with clean IMEI from a buddy for $275. He said it was too big of a device for him. I can't really justify an upgrade right now with the current offerings. S6 has Touchwiz (pardon me while I puke), antiquated home button & capacitive keys, no micro SD, and anemic battery. The M9 just didn't do it this year, and there's no word on a GPe version yet anyway. Safe to say I'll stick with my "Nexus 5.5" for now..

I'm actually grateful that it hasn't. Summer is coming and like many of you, I've spent more time then I care to remember flashing 3 different ROM's a day. I'm glad I don't have that issue anymore honestly.
I have the G2, and think I might upgrade to the G3. The G4 is the only other phone that has my interest also but won't be sold to probably late May. Plus, the G4 will be already on Lollipop and doesn't have an older KK bootloader to flash twrp on and might be stuck. Unless bump gets updated to work on the new Lollipop bootloader. What you guys think?

I would put down money saying the g4 will be bootloader unlocked on T-Mobile just like this g3.
It's no question for me. The G4 will be mine by pre-order. I have owned 1 Samsung phone and have had 5 Lg's including the G2 and 3 so it's only right to get the 4. Plus all of my other electronics are Lg so they sync up seamlessly.

Here's what I mean. The G3 on Lollipop can get root now. This allowed us to to modify the aboot with the previous kitkat version where we could bump the boot.img and recovery.img. This is only necessary if you want to flash custom roms, etc...
When the G4 comes out, it will come with Lollipop out of the box. It will probably be able to get rooted also with the latest exploit we have for root on Lollipop. But to get a custom twrp put on it to flash custom roms probably won't happen and will stay locked down on any carrier untill a new bump is developed that will work with the Lollipop aboot.img. The G4 doesn't have a previous version of Kitkat to do the hack that we do both on the G3 and G2 to make bump work.
My hunch is rom development on the G4 will not be possible until an exploit is found. Not sure we can put a G3 KK base aboot.img on a G4. Probably make it a brick.

Thinking of moving to G4, would like your thoughts.

Hey all,
Currently a BB Passport owner and yes I do love my phone, However, the maps are not getting updated, its starting to get laggy, and BB making a push into android before deciding to just stay with IOT security. well I hope the priv does well but the slider would get chewed up in my line of work.
Thus here I am asking the following.
The G4 runs 808 which from what I've read overtime supersedes the 810 in performance due to heat and throttling. I was originally sold on the Sony Z5 because I work marine construction and figured with a good case the water resistance would proof nice and I wouldnt have to get a rugged phone whereby I lose a lot of performance.
Z5 has 810 and im personally leery of that chip since I read so many reports on it.
My attention then turned to the G4
from what i've read the phone has a nice camera, strong antenna and a nice leather back. Cool but, for me I need to know how it handles the weather. I plan on putting it in a defender case while at work, but it rains here on vancouver island A LOT. like inches a day sometimes and I may need to bust out my phone to calc board footage or weight of a lumber package or take a call or something.
Is the phone loud?
Is the phone going to be ok in a otterbox in those conditions? (I get OB is good for dropping, how about rain, the oops a puddle drop etc)
if these all look good, I may bite the bullet and grab one. Im really not excited to lose my keyboard on my passport but, some of the glitches im getting are over the top irritating.
Thanks all,
Jordan.
For the keyboard just install SwiftKey which beat any keyboard and you can set, personalized it to be more productive.
Put a thin case and it will be great.
It charges fast, the phone is loud.
Here is the thing. IF you do not care not having an unlocked bootloader for the G4, by all means, get the G4 since it is a fantastic device for average users. But if ever you'd gotten yourself an H815 EUR variant of the G4, absolutely get it!

Do you have any trouble with it?

And does the it support the new Camera HAL v3?
Would be nice, to be able to take raw pictures
You can take Raw pictures on any G4 camera version, I thought. That isn't something new.
There aren't many custom roms because of the locked bootloaders. Fortunately the LG series really stopped me from being a flashaholic. Going back to stock AOSP leaves a lot to be desired.
We do have root and can flash custom stuff such as Xposed and Tweaks using apps such as Flashify. There just isn't a Custom Recovery for the locked models.

I joined the family today. I'll wait for someone to open that bootloader. One I got the phone in my hands I was sold.
Buy it anyway. Stock is better than any AOSP or Cyanogenmod any day of the century, and you will probably get used to LG stock anyway.
No idea why anyone would want to ruin a device by installing buggy software such as AOSP or CM and also destroy camera experience.
Can't see any reason for me to root or install rom's on this phone, it's perfect with MM.
On a side note, it's very easy to fix yourself too with a quick youtube guide.

is there Marshmellow for the G4 812's?
Hi, I'm from Brazil and the G4 that I have is H815P, don't know what this "p" means.. The software version is V10a...
You guy's could show me the right direction on how to look for root and kdz stuff? My H815P is similar or equivalent to the H815 (without the "P")?
Thanks

[Q] Does the G4 artificially sharpen the contents of the screen?

I was originally considering picking up a G3, but decided against doing so because of the many reports of artificial "over-sharpening" of the picture quality. Since G4s have come down in price, they are now on my radar as well, so my question for the community is simple - does the G4 suffer from the same artificial sharpening that the G3 does?

I'm talking about the screen; not the camera (although if the camera's pictures are degraded worse than comparable devices, it is important to consider also).

Lol, off topic; let's get back to the question at hand

Lol, not using TMobile. And while I now know that the artificial sharpening problem on the G3 can be defeated, my question still remains if it is an issue on the G4.

That's a bummer. I'm guessing the situation isn't much better on the Verizon variant of the phone, so it looks like the G4 is probably out of the question as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for the information though.

Mate don't listen to these guys, they don't know what they're talking about...
The G4 does *NOT* suffer from G3's sharpening problems (personal experience as well as many reviews, check Anandtech's which is the best review site) and new G4's almost don't suffer from bootloop problems.
The display is brilliant, the phone is great, good battery and nice custom ROM support. If you want a G4 definitely buy it, now that price is low it has terrific value for money
P.S.: the camera as well is simply superb, just check "G4 Picture Samples" thread here on XDA
The plot thickens

Interesting. Do you know how the custom Rom and kernel support is with regard to the Verizon variant of the G4? I was just on the G3 forums and there is apparently a lot of hoops that have to be jumped through in order to get custom recovery on a Verizon G3. Is it any easier and better on the G4? Are there any noteworthy pitfalls?

I honestly don't know, but I suggest you buy an unlocked H815 international model since it's for sure the most supported.
The G4 has great value for money now. The camera is superb. The screen is amazing and no it doesn't over sharp anything. This was only on G3. Battery life is OK nothing super but definitely not terrible. Newer G4s do not suffer from the Bootloop. The phone only misses a fingerprint reader. If you want root and custom ROMs but the international H815 which you can unlock.
VS986 or bust

The H815 is a no-go for Verizon and Verizon MVNOs. It's gotta be the VS986. I'll check in on the Verizon-specific forums for details on that. Otherwise, I'd have to shell out the extra money for a Moto X Pure Edition, which is currently hovering at just below $200 on the used market; hopefully it and the G4 (whichever I decide to go with) drop off by the time upgrade season rolls around in the spring.

I'm sorry for you american guys, having carrier-locked phones sucks hard Europe FTW
Jokes aside, if you can't get an H815 then by all means go read VS986 forums here on XDA.

Newer G4's typically don't suffer from bootloops but they are still possible. Anyways LG does change it under warranty terms if you are so unlucky to get a bootloop on a new G4, even if you have a custom ROM.

Why have a headaches to buy a defective device in the first place then wait for it to bootloop then loose all ur imp stuff in the process come here cry try to find solutions to backup data....this is all exhausting ...aint nobody got time for that...mind newer ones are also expensive like 300$ only like the s/n 5xx cost around 200$

LG sold millions of G4 phones, a tiny few of those had the bootloop issue, and LG fixed them. And the reason that you buy an LG G4 is because it was the best phone overall, a year ago, and still is the best phone you can buy today, when you consider removable battery & memory card, camera, screen, audio quality etc. at ANY PRICE.
Tiny few ??? Ahem ahem its a manufacturing fault its bound to happen in every phone atleast with s/n 5xxx ....the blue print of g4 is exactly the same atleast for the older versions...so u are a bit exaggerated about tiny few of g4s while the reported are in millions..they r better options from the g4 like the moto droid turbo buy the 64gb version best phone best price better than g4 it is also cheaper than g4 u can get ot around 180US$ used
Every one Check out the consumer review for lg

Still worth buying?

EDIT: Got the answers I needed, bought the phone, we're good! Thanks!
Hi guys and gals! I'm looking at upgrading from my Galaxy S8+ to a Pixel 2 XL. I admit, I used to be a Samsung fanboy, that being the main reason I got an S8+ like a dumb dumb lol. But I've changed! Having seen the leaks of the Pixel 3, implementing that annoying notch, losing the front facing speakers, I'm not impressed with Google's next offering and don't plan on getting it. That being said, the Pixel 2 XL seems to be a great phone. Is it still worth picking up at this point in its life?
Some explanation for my upgrading may be necessary. For those unfamiliar, the Galaxy S8+ is essentially completely locked down unless you have an international model. Being a Canadian with a Canadian model, I have a grand total of ZERO custom ROMs to use. Now, that's particularly irritating, because this is the first phone I've ever had where I've been locked out of modifying my device the way I want to, and that's very important to me. Had I known this was an issue going into it, I never would have gotten an S8+, but I picked it up very shortly after it was released so we didn't quite know about all of this yet.

Thanks for that. Those were pretty good resources for how people feel about the general use. Have you noticed any down sides to rooting or modifying the device? For example, if you root an S8+, for some reason you can't charge it past 80% battery.

No downsides that I have experienced since rooting last November. I can flash roms, kernels, mods, themes. Use TiBu, AdAway, or whatever I like that requires root. My device is still fast, fluid, and works great. My only 2 complaints would be system volume isn't loud enough, and screen full brightness could be better. Other than that, it's a great device :good:
I purchased mine in March from Google.
It's currently running stock and rooted 9.0 and it's outstanding!!
At this point I see no other phone that I would switch to.
I'd buy it again today without hesitation.
It's one of the best phone and camera combination around...
