Hey all.
If this has been posted already, I am sorry for a repeat post. I haven't seen a fix.
I recently did the OTA update on my Galaxy S3 to Android 4.1.2 and I think that is pretty much the only thing that I have changed.
I had to go back to my stock recovery in order to get the update, but I never changed my recovery back to CWM.
The phone says that I am still rooted, I have the superuser icon in my apps so I assume that I am rooted.
Whenever I click on the app it says that I am granted superuser permission.
I am using the WiFi tether TrevE Mod and it worked in the past with my ipad.
It starts to tether, stating that I have superuser permission, but then it says:
"Tethering started with Errors!
Please check 'showlog'.
I check for the WiFi option on my ipad and my ipad is not there.
I unistalled and reinstalled the program and it has the same issues.
I go to the "show log" and it says "unable to open the log-file. File does not exist"
I am out of ideas what to try next and I ask the forum for advice.
Thanks to all!

This is a kernel issue. Some stock kernels don't allow wifi tethering, even if you are rooted. Flash a different kernel and profit.

That'll help you if you don't know how
The problem was that I lost root. Thanks!

I just rooted my Evo, using the unrevoked method, and my main reason for doing so was to be able to use the Google WiFi tether app.
The root appears to be successful by all counts, but after installing the WiFi tether app, I cannot use it. I get an error saying "Unable to start tethering" and this is even after using the very latest v2.0.2 build from 6/12.
Anyone else run into that? How can I fix it?
Thanks in advance,
-R
Run unrovoked again, make sure its rooted for sure and that the superuser is in the app list. I ran into the problem before, and for some reason the superuser wasnt working correctly.
I use this with unrevoked. Tethers two simultaneously.
Has wpa security.. It's also fun. lol
Update 2: Root was still acting wonky. I was getting multiple requests per app and it wasn't remembering my preference even with the box checked. I tried to allow all but it just wouldn't work at all that way. So I went to update the binaries just to be sure and I had version 3.2 while the latest (and I'm assuming stable) version is only 3.1.1. So if anyone has the problems I did, UPDATE YOUR BINARIES! That fixed everything for me.
Update: I uninstalled the Superuser apk via ES File Explorer, reinstalled it from the Play Store, and just let the phone sit while I was browsing and looking for an answer and when I went back to it Superuser opened and my root was back. I'm not sure if what I did helped but if anyone else has this problem then I can only recommend what I did. If someone can explain what I did wrong or why I lost root, that would still be helpful. If this post needs to be deleted then the mods can do so, I left it in case anyone else runs into this and searches the forums for it.
I have the At&t ion and I managed to get root on ICS on my second try. I was happy about it and decided to start flashing some zips after installing CWM so I deodexed, rebooted, and then flashed one of the status bar tweaks. When I rebooted again Superuser would force close as soon as it opened with the message "Unfortunately Superuser has stopped working". I still have root access in ES File Explorer since I granted it before Superuser stopped working. I cannot however grant any new root permissions since Superuser won't open.
I'm willing to reflash GB and start from scratch again, I'd just like to know what the reason is (was it deodexing? Flashing the zip for the status bar? Or is this just something that can happen?) so I can avoid it the next time. I'm not too excited about having to redownload all my apps for the 3rd time (I was living without root on ICS but decided to go ahead and get it) so if there's a way around it I'd like to find it. Any help is appreciated. I'll try to reply as quickly as possible, thanks guys.
Hello,
So as the forum discussion I have the AT&T S3 I747 - Initially I rooted the phone to be able to use it at as a wireless hotspot and everything worked great the method i used was galaxys3root .com (I cant post the actual link <10 posts)
What I thought was a notification OTA triggered me to opening superuser and doing an uninstall/permanent unroot to ensure i didn't brick my phone, well I was wrong about the notification feeling like an idiot i decided to go ahead a reroot the phone again.
I followed the same procedure as linked above this time with problems, I have no Superuser Icon in apps tray, under applications manager it appears but only gives me the option to "Uninstall Updates" and that all
Things I have tried
- installing both versions onto the phone Clockwork mod simply just sits there under "Installing Superuser" Chain version installs but appears to do nothing.
- Used odin to reflash the stock rom then tried the re root process again
- reinstalled the wifi app to see if working but no longer is
I am not looking for a custom rom I like the default one I have I just want the Superuser app to show up again, anyone know what I could do to fix this?
Thanks for all your help

Hello!! i come to the best forum desperately looking for help after three days of weird behaviour, i had already rooted my galaxy tab 3 10.1 using a guide i found here on xda-developers months ago, i cant remember which one, it used Odin and custom recovery says BinDroid CWM-based recovery v6.0.2.8, it was successfully rooted, installed busybox 1.21.1 (stericsson) almost all root apps working fine, but some of them like network spoofer or dsploit telling that busybox was not installed correctly or some binary could not be found, im not a tech noob, but definitely new to android, so one day i tried installing them both in /system/xbin and /system/bin because some apps read from one directory or the other and the dual install would not be harmful for the device, also installed it symlinking with manual install, after i did that, those apps worked finally!! but, root checker said my device was not rooted anymore... so weird
So i tried rooting again over CWM, same method and still showing no root access, i decided then to make a full factory reset, after doing that, wifi is stuck on "obtaining ip address" avoided slow connection, it only connects when i set a static ip, some problem with dhcp i guess, and also, super user app is still there but showing no SU found and not able to uninstall the app, only shows the option, enable and disable, tired of this, i followed this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2625805 with both ROMs in order to go back to stock, both installed just fine, but i saw "installing busybox" during the process, is that suposed to happen with a stock rom? i mean the first one on the thread suposed to be the stock one, and the second rom is not showing root access on root checker either, even though the author says it is rooted ... at least super user app is no longer there, but both ROMs still stuck on "obtaining ip" bucle, and now it got worse, most apps downloaded are not working, chrome for example opens for a second and closes, other apps open, but only show a black screen and the notification bar, i uploaded the root.zip i used for rooting in first place, please tell me if there is something left to do to fix this, anything, i would really apreciate it!!
Apologize my bad english and my ignorance on android... thanks for reading and all help in advance!!
Hey there,

can anyone point me to some directions please. i'm a long haul trucker. so i don't keep up on this technology anymore. i've already spent half the night trying to root my sprint note 2 running 4.4.2. 3 different odins were all successful. but the actual supersu is non functioning.
i don't have nor really want to spend countless hours on google trying to do one root method after another. i just want to keep the stock software, root the darn thing and hopefully get wifi tether.
anyone, please????
p.s. it's been months since i've done this. and the phone has been deactivated till now, after 12 months. so i have no idea what bootloader i even have. i think it's either cwm or twrp. not sure. i'm way behind the curve in remembering the procedure.
You posted this in the wrong area..
What happened to our moderators? This is the second thread here that does not belong. If I was to do something like this they would be all over me like stink on sh!t.
To root your phone use cf auto root. Since your on stock rom you have to use a hotspot app from play store. There is a mod to make stock hotspot work but not for the stock rom.
Also next time you have a question please ask in q&a not development.

personally, I prefer the Sprint Note 2 Toolkit. I won't install SuperUser or SUSuperUser, but your phone will be rooted. You can then just download SuperUser from Google Play. If you can use Odin, you should everything set. It's just a menu driven system. Just make sure you download the Note2 version. I recently goofed and did the Galaxy S3. Needless it didn't work, but I just odn the stock rom and tried again.
As for tethering, that'll depend on your ROM. Some roms may have it already incorporated, but those are more the AOSP. There are some stock baised that it as well. If you want WiFi and those are not working, you can use WiFi Tether Router from Google Play. It costs a few dollars; If memory serves me well, it was between three and four dollars. I use it all the time.and on both AOSP and TW roms. You may need BusyBox installed, but if you're rooted, you should have it anyway. Very useful tool.
that toolkit don't seem to do anything as far as root goes. unless it's in the paid version.
i think i got root finally working. busybox finally installed. knox is finally disabled.
tried the wifi tether router. it keeps asking for supersu permission. so that don't seem to work. least not on 4.4 anyways.
any other suggestions. i've got the trevemod but it's not working either. although i think it's an old outdated version. 3.3 i think it is. all i been able to find on google so far.

Do you have a superSu or superuser app in your app drawer? If so open it and it will want you to update your binary do the normal install. If not open play store and install superSU. You have to have a superuser app to give other apps superuser permissions without it you wont get wifi tethering to work.
she's working now. supersu, busybox, and wifi router.
we would appear to be in business.
thanks for all the help guys/gals.

The free version is all I have used. I've used it about about three or four times. You just need to make sure to install the samsung drivers, which Toolkit has menu option for. Enable USB debugging. Select the correct correct for it to download whatever tar image is uses. Select a recovery you want, it downloads. Later, you actually select the option to root and install a recovery. Really, the process takes about ten to fifteen depending on your download speeds.
The paid version has extra features
Also, TrevEMod WiFi Tether does not work on 4.3 and above. He was never updated for it. WiFi Tether Router works, as you know. It's a slow to start and terminate. Every once in a while it looses interest to the clients, but that's not often. I'm running CM8 which is Andriod 4.4.4.
