[Q] Spontaneous bricked phone? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, my problem is as follows:
I dug out my Desire HD as my HTC One X's touch screen become completely unresponsive (cant unlock my screen and now sent off to HTC awaiting their response)
Placed my sim in the Desire HD and it worked as well as I remembered it.
Phone details from bootloader:
ACE PVT S-OFF
HBOOT-0.85.2007 (PD9810000)
MICROP-0438
Radio-26.08.03.07_M
eMMC-boot

my desire HD was working fine until the battery fully discharged and problems began. Currently:
phone attempts to boot, a brief flash of the carrier logo then turns itself off (strangely after this I have to disconnect and reconnect i to power to get the orange charging light). It boots into Bootloader and fastboot ONLY if the SD card is out and the phone is plugged into a power source or my laptop.
Recovery does not load (it was CMW), when i try the phone switches itself off, then tries to boot, flashes my carrier logo then turns itself off.
If the SD card is in and I try and load Bootloader I get a PD98IMG.zip error. When I downloaded the PD98img.zip and tried to get into bootloader I get an error which flashes up too fast for me (or my cannon camera to capture) and the phone turns itself off.
I tried to reflash CWM recovery, however I got the error:
sending 'recovery' (3554 KB)...
OKAY [0.601s]
writing 'recovery'...
FAILED 9status read failed (too many links))
finished. total time 0.605s
Please help as I have had to dig out an old phone barely capable of running snakes.

Since you can get it to boot to fastboot have you tried fastboot USB? If that works I would suggest trying to use one of the RUU's shown here to restore your phone to stock factory and re-root , eventually getting Eng S-Off if everything goes well

Thanks
I have tried Fastboot USB, i tried to load CWM recovery that way but i got "failed (status read failed(too many links))
I am downloading the RUU. Just to make sure I am doing this right, am I loading into bootloader, then fastboot, then fastboot USB, then what command am I using to flash the RUU? do I need to wipe anything else? will this work without an SD card inside my phone?
Thanks again

[Q] DHD bricked?

Hi all,
Im having a little trouble with my dhd. It won't boot up !
I can get into HBOOT, but thats it. (ie. no recovery CWM)
When trying to boot normally it hangs at spash screen.
so far i have tried:
- fastboot flashing (system.img dosn't flash (for known reasons))
- this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841890) (tried with 2 different RUUs)
everything seemed to go according to plan, but still exactly the same problem.
- I've even tried flashing back the stock spash screen via fastboot in preperation to send it back to tmobile/htc to fix BUT, despite fastboot telling me flashing was succsessful, i still have my custom splash!
- pulling my hair out!
ive got eng hboot s-off radio s-off supercid and stuff??
my hboot info screen looks like this:

Which cw recovery is installed?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
First question, what did you do immediately before you turned you DHD off, hence the reboot?
From the bootloader can you enter fastboot? You should be able to flash recovery from there. You mention "for known reasons" what are these?
Hi pwraggcan,
I'm not too sure? and I'm not sure how I can check either, as I can only enter hboot/fastboot.
AndyHarney,
As far as I can remember I was using my phone as normal. (no risky installs/flashes to speak of). Then overnight it ran out of battery, and now won't boot up .. ?
fastboot flash system system.img returns:
sending 'system' (410134 KB)... FAILED (remote: data length is too large)
finished. total time: 0.006s
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img returns:
sending 'recovery' (8701 KB)... OKAY [ 1.494s]
writing 'recovery'... OKAY [ 0.837s]
finished. total time: 2.331s
but when I choose 'RECOVERY' form hboot menu it still hangs on splash.

So you have recovery, and you're rooted, well I'd say install a ROM as ROMS flash system, boot and cache img files. Sending a 410mb file ofver adb seems a bit risky. Also, if you have no ROMs on the SD Card go into recovery, mounts and storage and at the bottom is usb or something.
MrYuiM,
I don't mean to act the fool, but I don't fully understand you're post.
"well I'd say install a ROM as ROMS flash system, boot and cache img files"
not sure how I can go about doing this? using fastboot?
"Also, if you have no ROMs on the SD Card go into recovery"
which ROMs do you mean? I have on my sdcard "LeeDrOiD_HD_V1.5.1.zip" and others. I also have some nandroid backups.
Currently, I have not found a way to enter recovery..
P.S I apologize for spewing my ignorance all over this thread.
Get PD98IMG.zip from my downgrade guide, put it into your SD card and go to the bootloader. Then tell us what what happens.
By the way, you still have fully warranty despite the fact that your device has S-OFF. There is nothing about software mods in warranty terms. For example mike1986 sent his phone to HTC's service center, it was S-OFF and it even had a custom ROM in it, and they did not complain.

When I asked HTC they were pretty stern on the fact that rooting voids their warranty despite it not being in the guidelines :/

To enter recovery turn your phone off completely and plug it into the charger, recovery will auto open. Also, everyone starts off somewhere.
But go with jkoljo first as he is more experienced
Hi jkoljo,
Downloading now,
It's also a big relief to hear that software modding dosn't effect warrenty *phew*

Good luck mate, report back on how it goes
Might be futile but you could try a different recovery. If you're s off it should work. Try a 2.x.x.x then a 3.x.x.x. flashing from fastboot, it could be that. If the pd98img doesn't work then it might be a faulty motherboard and htc will have to fix it.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I tried jkoljo advice, but still no dice! ... (hey that rhymes!)
One thing I noticed as it was checking SD card: -
SD Checking...
Loading...[PD98DIAG.zip]
No image!
Loading...[PD98DIAG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!
Loading...[PD98IMG.zip]
are those errors normal?!
just to clarify, after jkoljo's PD98IMG.zip update, I reboot and it hangs at my custom spash screen, just as before.
It's as if I hadn't tried to update/recover at all!
Anyways, Thankyou all for your help, assistance and advice.
I have to go out now, but ill be back tomorrow to try again.
It seems that you have to format your SD card. Do a full format to FAT32 (no quick format), and try it again.
Ok, formatted and tried again.
But same results as my last post.
I even tried with 2 SD's (4gb + 8gb).
Does this mean my phone is not recoverable..?
....I hope not..
oopes, delete this post please

Could you recommend one?
The only one I've ever known is CWM.
Also I don't have much faith in fastboot right now.
When I flashed my stock splash, it said 'OK' but never changed!
Thanks pwraggcan
Try flashing a different recovery while in fastboot.. Try the stock one first and if you can boot into recovery wipe data/factory reset.
fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img
recovery zip attached. good luck.
Thanks for the suggestion pwraggcan,
I tried that recovery.. and it flashed 'OK' but still no change from my previous attempts.
Soo... Shall I call this a write-off and let HTC deal with it..
Or are there any last ditch solutions I could be trying.
Jason9
As a last resort try the attached recovery. If this recovery doesn't work it's gotta be a hardware issue. I'm thinking if you backed up with a 2 series cw recovery then updated the recovery with rom manager to a 3 series cw recovery it won't let restore the backup. So, try the attached and fingers crossed, you're up and running. Probably won't sort it but definitely worth a try.

[Q] Help!! Froze on HTC Logo!

Hy guys
I have an HTC T mobile G2 and a few days back it started to froze when i used certain aplications. I had to remove the battery and it all came back to normal till one time when it got stuck on the HTC logo and wont go any further then that. I have tried to run PC10IMG from Hboot on it but its says that Main Version Is older! I have also tried to delete the hboot.n00 file from PC10IMG boot and reziped it but it didnt worked. I have tried to go into recovery and did a full date wipe on it but with no result. In other words I have tried all the options to recover it using my sd card and it didnt work.
I have Vision PVT S-ON
HBOOT-0.82.008
MICROP-0425
RADIO-26.13.04.19_M
eMMC-boot
Apr 13 2011
I have also tried to use android sdk to downgrade but no mather what I do I cant get the androidsdk to find my phone. I installed the drivers using HTC sync and PDAnet and all other methods I could find online but with no luck. I ve also used vista and windows 7 but since there no way i can access and enable usb debugging thats not an option for me.
Please if you have any ideas on how to get it to work I would appreciate it.
You could try either a factory reset, or flash a newer PC10IMG
The PC10IMG's are signed, and seeing as you are S-ON, your phone will run a signature check, so you cannot modify the the zip at all, or it will fail.
-Nipqer
I tried to do a factory reset from recovery menu with no luck...its says :
E: can't mount /data/recovery log after it wiped data and cache
I tried the latest PC10IMG i could find including the one you refered too but it still says: Main Version is Oder!
I hope i dont have to wait till a newer version comes out
You might have the bad emmc chip then, there's more info here
-Nipqer
Ok so i looked thru the posts but i cant check to see if I have the good or the bad emmc chip. Now somehow I ve got android sdk to work in fastboot only so if i use comand i get
c:androidsdk/tools/fastboot devices
SH0C4R201107 fastboot
so that means it can see my phone. Is there anyway I can use this and fix it?
I cant get adb devices to work tho......
do you have eng or ship hboot? cause fastboot only really works with eng hboot.
-Nipqer
I think I have ship boot....I mean i never rooted the phone or anything
so nothing I can do then?
oh yeah, should've realised that...
From what I can work out there's nothing you can do, is it still under warranty?
-Nipqer
Nope... I have tried to flash recovery.img but i get
C:\AndroidSDK\tools>fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
sending 'recovery' (4652 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.825s]
writing 'recovery'...
(bootloader) signature checking...
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
finished. total time: 1.579s
I guess there is nothing else i could do except get a new phone...thanks for your help

[Q] HTC desire Z stuck in booting after downgrade attempt

Hello,
I have a phone that is now stuck at white screen with green htc logo after an attempt to downgrade following this guide :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
However i had already downloaded a PC10IMG.zip with this tool :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1521019
I first tried using the tool, but it always failed. It seemed to me the script failed on getting temproot. (I then manually downloaded the PC10IMG.zip in the .bat file just incase it was a problem with the wget it uses or something)
After that i followed the guide instead and gained temproot, changed version and gaining supercid through the goldcard method.
I then tried downgrading using the manual method using the PC10IMG.zip mentioned above (Its alot smaller than the ones mentioned in the guide. I have a suspicion it is for another phone perhaps). Bootloader recognized it and started "upgrade" process as expected. After it worked with that for a while it rebooted and since then I have been stuck on the white/green splash screen on normal boots.
I can still get into Hboot, but I cant do anything there. Nothing seems to work there. Neither volume +/-, trackpad nor powerbutton does anything.
I can also get into fastboot. This seems to work better, but when i try to flash the image then it just gives me :
D:\platform>fastboot-windows flash zip StockRom.zip
sending 'zip' (291447 KB)... FAILED (remote: 02 data length is too large)
HBOOT screen shows me the following:
VISION PVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.82.0008
MICROP-0425
RADIO-26.08.04.30_M3
I havent tried altering the contents of my SD card in fear of making things even worse.
Any tips/tricks/hint would be greatly appreciated!
Got some rather excellent help from #g2root to fix this today.
My main problem was that I had flashed the wrong img and that my Golden SD was not working correctly. Got that sorted out by using another SD and made it golden in another device.
Then proceeded to upgrade it to the newest g2 software (since that was what i had tried to do in the first place. Namely using the g2 img in a Desire Z device), downgrade it, rooted it and installed the necessary tools to get Andromadus running
Thanks to pierre_ja, skorgon, Uni_Ced and Catherall for the patience, moral support and excellent help! The amount of handholding from pierre_ja was astonishing
G2 img
Can i ask where you obtained the G2.img file, I am in a similar situation. Thanks
We used this one PC10IMG_Vision_TMOUS_2.15.531.3_Radio_12.52.60.25U_26.08.04.30_M3.zip

Not with an HTC Vision, you can't... You need an PC to do this.
That's too bad. The G2 used to easy. Thanks for the reply!

I have tried to flash the provided earlier in the post (PC10IMG.zip).

This is your problem, adb can't see your phone. Was it up and running when you tried this ? If so it's your adb setup. Have you used adb before on this phone ? See my signature for a link to a guide to setting up adb.

For the G2 there is a new program called mr. root, wich makes everything a bit easier, but you still need an computer to do it. So that's correct indeed.
From memory that 99 error means you used htcdev.

The cmd's seem to be working from the cmd prompt. for example the phone did go into boot loader.
The phone is in a state where it will not boot up. Fails on the htc logo.
However boot loader is not functioning, every time it directs me to clock work orange mod screen. Which does not function either
Same problem!!
Hi, im really new here, and i googled the 'symptoms' of my broken HTC desire Z and this thread came up. My phone is showing exactly the same writting as what you described, but i really really dont know why. i dont know what all these technical terms mean/do but i REALLY miss my phone and want it to work again!! I would really really REALLY appreciate any help anyone could offer me, because the warranty is up so i cant send it back!
Thank you so much!
So to get this straight, you've tried to root your phone and it went wrong. If so, can you still get into your recovery?
-Turn off phone, hold down the power and volume up button. Then ou should get your bootloader. Once that's loaded slelect recovery with your volume buttons and confirm (press "enter") by pressing your powerbutton. Then your phone should restart in recovery. If you haven't changed your recovery image, you should be able to get the stock ROM running again.-

Which recovery version you got?
I suggest to update it, when you are in the initial one. It got a charging bug, which wont let you charge when teh phone is off.
With the new recovery it is fixed.
after flashing the new recovery via fastboot you can turn your phone off in hboot and charge it. when its over 30% again you can flash the ruu if you want.
Which custom rom you tried to flash? Did you flashed also flashed the boot.img?
And which process didnt finish? More details and exact error mesages.
TO CHARGE YOUR PHONE:
Let the screen "HTC QUIETLY BRILLIANT" and connect to the charger, leave it for 5 hours (is better a complete night), now connect the HOX to your computer and flash whoever you want or flash the factory ruu with the BOOTLOADER RELOCKED.
See this tutorial for any problems, this was made by me !! this tut was quoted in the thread DISASTER RECOVERY.

[Q] Any recovery from this brick?

Hi All,
I'm hoping an expert will be able to help me. I have a Desire HD that a friend has asked me to have a look at knowing that I have tinkered around with my android phones. She said it "just happened" while she was out riding her bike one day.
Basically, all I'm getting is the green on white HTC logo regardless of what I try. I can get into HBOOT & fastboot and have tried to flash recovery.img, run RUU, flash boot.img and flash PD98IMG.zip (both via fastboot & direct from root of SD card). I obviously couldn't root the device using AAHK as I can't boot into the phone to enable USB debugging and adb obviously won't work for the same reason.
I've tried flashing both 4ext & CWM recoveries neither of which work. When I try to boot into recovery using by selecting that option in HBOOT it just goes straight back to the green on white HTC logo.
In a vein attempt to get anywhere with it I managed to "unlock" the bootloader using htcdev instructions but it hasn't succeeded in helping with the problem.
HBOOT details are as follows:
*** UNLOCKED ***
ACE PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.00.0029
MICROP-0438
RADIO-26.14.04.28_M
eMMC-boot
Dec 22 2011,14:28:19
The RUU I have tried works to a point and then fails but I'm guessing it's because I need the Vodafone UK RUU which doesn't seem to be anywhere. I tried this one to no avail
Code:
RUU_Ace_Sense30_S_HTC_WWE_3.12.405.1_R_Radio_12.65.60.29_26.14.04.28_M_release_233505_signed.exe
If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

MICROP-0438
RADIO-26.14.04.28_M
eMMC-boot

The RUU I have tried works to a point and then fails but I'm guessing it's because I need the Vodafone UK RUU which doesn't seem to be anywhere. I tried this one to no avail
Code:
RUU_Ace_Sense30_S_HTC_WWE_3.12.405.1_R_Radio_12.65.60.29_26.14.04.28_M_release_233505_signed.exe
If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

ok, are you sure that you actually flashed recovery successfully? unless you have a messed motherboard, you should be able to flash recovery image and then a custom rom.
A RUU won´t work as you have unlocked the bootloader. Make sure that you are flashing the recovery from fastboot and you get the OKAY. Finished in the cmd / terminal session.
If you need further help, just let me know. :good:

Thanks for the quick reply. Here is my CMD text pasted below:
Code:
D:\***\***\***\***\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>fastboot flash re
covery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-ace.img
sending 'recovery' (3624 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.613s]
writing 'recovery'...
OKAY [ 0.572s]
finished. total time: 1.188s
It always seems to succeed whichever recovery I use and that's now CWM, Touch CWM & 4ext that I've tried. So is the prognosis a screwed mobo?
