ust updated to stock 4.2.2 on a Verizon Nexus and I have an issue with gmail. So in the the gmail app the number on the top right is the unread email count. So lets say I get 4 new emails, the count shows 4. I then read or delete them and the count still shows 4. I then log on the computer and and gmail shows 4 unread. I have tried pushing the refresh a few times. It like the phone knows there are 4 unread but at the same time is ignorinf that I just marked them read.

I think clearing g-mail's cache and/or uninstalling and reinstalling it should fix that.

Hello all,
First I want to say thanks to all the developers and everyone who works so hard to make great stuff!
My question is regarding GMail: I use SkyRaider 3.0 RC2 Vanilla, Launcher Pro Plus, King's #3, OC to 1.13, s-off. I decided to enable the Priority Inbox Beta in my GMail account. I receive quite a bit of emails each day, so it did it's thing by filtering out the good and bad. When I receive a couple emails from people who are people I regularly get emails from, they appear in my Priority Inbox.
My phone's GMail icon will display 2 for 2 unread messages, but when I click on it only one unread shows up. I delete it, so now the unread out is at 1, but nothing is there. I cannot get it to clear unless I go to a computer to log in and get rid of it. I confirmed that both emails are in the same inbox.
Is that normal? I was able to get it corrected by disabling the Priority Inbox, and then clearing the GMail data/cache. Back to normal. Batt pulls, cycling power, nothing would clear the unread count. I understand that this feature is in its Beta phase, and what I am seeing is normal? Any comments?
The same thing has been happening the past few days for me. However I haven't enabled the Priority Inbox feature, and I'm on the 8/1 2.2 leak. I don't think its due to Priority Inbox, but rather a bug with the Gmail app. Just my two cents.
You have to go online in your browser and click on the unread email. I don't know why it's like that but that is how I have been dealing with the issue. If you open your phone's browser and log into gmail you will see the email it is reading and open it or delete it and it will zero out. Prior to rooting I had this issue as well, but could go to the "all mail" label and find what it was seeing, now even when I open it on my phone, it still shows unread sometimes.
I'd like to chime in and say I too noticed this problem today. It showed I had 5 unread messages. When I look in the inbox on my phone they were all read. However going to gmail on my computer showed the unread messages. Its as if the 'read' flag isn't being updated.
Been two days now that the stock Gmail app has stopped marking read emails as read. They still look like they've been read and the subject text loses its boldness indicating it has been but the new message counter indicated that it hasn't. Logging in to Gmail from a PC also shows they've not been marked read. Forcefully marking them read doesn't do the trick either.
In the app I can use GMail style searches (which are awesome and I love by the way) to find unread emails and they show up, in bold, and unread. I'm talking about doing a search like "is:unread" by the way.
I want to reinstall Gmail.apk but not sure wher to get it... link?
UPDATE: Duh, its in the market.
Not the end of the world, but slightly annoying. No matter what I do, I cant seem to get rid of the number "7" on my Email icon indicating there are 7 unread messages. Even if the inbox is empty.
Im running Calk v1.5 and pulled the Email and Exchange apk's from the AOKP Rom because it has better functionality than the Calk Email version. Exchange is working fine, but the "7" indicating new messages wont go away on the icon. Ive tried to wipe data from Email and Exchange apps and delete the apk's from the system/app folder, and tried to reinstall, reboot the phone, etc. No matter what I do, as soon as I drop the apk's back into the system folder or click the apk to install them again, the email icon comes back with the "7" indicator. Is there something else I can clear or delete to refresh the icon/indicator itself?

Maybe check online to the email client you're on and make sure the program is synced properly. Happened to me with Gmail before and the app showed all messages read, but online via a browser showed unread messages.

Thanks for the feedback but its not a sync issue. Outlook client and browser/webmail confirm there arent 7 unread messages anywhere (inbox, trash, folders, etc). Even if I dont configure Email or Exchange after I reinstall the apk's, the "7" is there on the icon.
Try wiping app data and also your phones cache/dalvik-cache

go sms notification wont go away
I'm having the same issue but with go sms. I get 4 new messages notifications, but there aren't any new messages. I cant get it to go away at all. Im running CM9 v4. Maybe it is related to the phantom vm issue.
i recently noticed that my gmail app is acting weird...
it says i have few new mails (shows a no. on top right hand side) but there are no mails shown. but then if i go to gmail.com on PC it shows those new mails. i thought it had something to do with showing just priority inbox, but i checked settings in gmail app, and it is set to show everything in inbox.
any ideas?
thank you.
Yeah it has been doing that to me too.
For me they were emails I had previously deleted, that for some reason didn't and got trapped. Just delete them from website, and you should be good.
thanks for the reply...
yeah once i deleted those mails on desktop, it worked fine for sometime and then again its showing 2 unread mails on phone, its kinda frustrating me!!
In gmail, search for label:unread. This will display the unread messages so you can delete them. I think it has to do with the threaded messages and the new ones get grouped with old threads that aren't displayed.

That works for me. Search for "is:unread in:inbox" will show the unread messages in the inbox. I use that search all the time.

I am using the same email as the one on the left with the 4 on it. I cannot get this notification to work. It never showed amount of emails I have.
Why not use the gmail app?
Because it doesn't notify amount of emails on the icon.
