I've been running the ota rooted JB ROM since it came out. I am not running any tweaks at all. Only difference is that I am rooted. Well battery life at first was awesome I would go 15+ hours with 3.5-5 hours of screen time. Now for the last week I have only been able to get 10 hours with 2.5 hrs of screen time max. want to know if anyone else has noticed this.
Oh and my phone seems to heat up a lot when I am only on FB and texting.

Your best bet when experiencing battery problems is to just do a factory rest , clear all cache and see if that helps. It usually does the trick.

I get atleast 2 days without charging
Don't want to do a factory reset lol
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
my battery life has been worse since JB
Update on this. I still only get 2.5 hours on with 12hrs max off charger. This is with ktoonz kernel and mw86's tweaks

That was before I was rooted! Haha!
check any installed app to see if they are using your internet.. for example every time Facebook updates its app.. They decide to change my settings to update every 15 mins..

I only have my gmail on sync everything else is shut off. And better battery stats isn't showing any unusual wake locks.

You could be in the same boat as me. My phone don't play well with ktoonz kernel. Horrible battery life no matter what I did. Went back to stock and I'm back to 4+hours screen on and 15-16 hours off the charger and even longer over wifi

I'll let it go one more day, used the official Samsung charger this time to see if that has some effect on it.
If not I will try stock kernel over the weekend.

You should know these batteries are Lithium ion batteries. So their life decays as time goes on and as you charge them. You may need a new battery

Did you switch back to stock kernel? Any results?
I experience this issue no matter what ROM I'm on, including stock, and I noticed that after about 10 minutes of using my phone while charging the phone gets way too hot and then the battery begins dropping drastically. None of the older threads relating to this really helped me much so I just wanted to know if this is normal?

No. Get a new battery

I'm running CM9 and have had this problem with 2 different Samsung Epics...I'll be on a phone call with, say 38% battery and all of a sudden I'll hear a system beep and look at the phone and see it's dropped to 0%, shutting down the phone. I've had different modems installed and always had the same result. Just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction.
Sounds like old batteries.

Yeah, it seems to me like it could have something to do with voltage or something, but I've been using about 4 or 5 different batteries with the same results.
Try updating to CM 9.1 Stable, CM 10 Stable, or CM 10.1 RC5

Do you think it is as simple as that? I am pretty bad about popping the battery out when I change batteries without shutting down. I charge them in an external charger (and charge the one in the phone overnight in the phone). I'll give it a shot and start shutting down properly before putting a fresh battery in. Thanks for the tip.
It doesn't seem to matter what rom I'm on my phone randomly just shuts down about five times a day. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Thanks!
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
What roms have you tried and what are you using now? You did a clean installation right? Factory reset, wipe cache, and dalvik cache?
What did you do before this happened?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Yes I always do a clean install system wipe, factory reset, clear cache etc. I've used about every Rom I think... the only one I can remember not having this issue was darthstalker x1. Right now I'm on stockaroma version 2 and it happens all the time. I even odined back to stock and reflashed and it still happens. I like multi window a lot so I hate to go backwards.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Have you tried to Odin back to stock and NOT flash a Rom?
If not, give it a shot and let us know.
Also, it could be your battery has finally given its last. If you don't know someone with an s3 go to a T-Mobile store and they should have one you can test with.

Now that I think of it, I'd get the battery checked before flashing anything else.

Yes when I was on stock it actually shut down during the first boot. I did notice that after flashing cyanogenmod 10.1 I charged it all night and it was at 100% charge but as soon as I unplugged it then it instantly dropped to like 10% that only happened once though. I guess maybe my battery it's jacked...
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Are they able to check batteries at T-Mobile? I'd hate to buy a new one they're pricy if that's the case I might as well pick up a gs4.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
They should have a known good one you can try. Plug it in and see if the reboots quit. No idea if they'd let you borrow it for a day, but I don't see why not.
If it dropped that quick though, I'm pretty confident that it's related.

it could also be that you need to clear the battery stats, my brother in law has had that issue many times after flashing CM on several different devices, but it could still be a jacked battery, am a licensed electrician and i can tell you while it does happen often for me because we buy so many products (obviously) that we get bad items directly from the manufacturer.
How can I clear the battery stats? I used to do this all the time under advance in clockwork recovery but I don't see it there on this phone. Thanks!

Well I charged my phone to 100% and calibrated the battery and not two minutes later it shut off for like the eighth time today... I'm going to go ahead and order a battery on eBay and if it keeps doing it I'm getting a gs4 and my s3 will be for sale lol.

So the battery didn't help at all. Just for fun I flashed darthstalker X1 again and it seems to be working fine now. Weird... I'll try to get to the bottom of this but I'm boggled.

One more thing it was doing was when I'd turn the screen off it would always come back on. It would do that two or the times before it would stay off then half the time the phone crashed. It's not doing that now either and I had that trouble on several different roms.

Ok so I am on frosty v8 rom 4.2.1 I am using saber kernel 45.3 I have tried recalibration of the battery but for some reason when I am charging my phone now it says its charging on the lockscreen but the phone is still dropping power. So I installed battery monitor pro and I have noticed that it says its discharging but while plugged in but the phone isnt running anything in the background.
Will upload some pictures
I think it might be the battery or the charging cable.

It's a tricky scenario. ..
I posted my own observation below yours ...
I get drainage while charging at a low battery% especially while using phone at same time .. This shouldn't be it's like low battery charge% is overriding the charging capabilities.
A phone should gain % while charging regardless of how you consume power least I'd think.
I wanna test this discharge/ charge theory while my phones at 80-90%.

now its really weird the phone is ice cold like 25degree, and the battery monitor pro app says the phone is charging not discharging but it says 0.0%/hr and the percentage is not moving up.. very confused.
I really dont think its rom related. Because I have been using the same rom for the last 10 months.
